In 1985 Auckland had 150ml of rain fall, Friday Auckland had over 200ml of rain at once…. Ppl are making the most of a bad situation some lives have been lost along with homes, so its good to see ppl smiling and having fun instead of scared. It’s not just Auckland having problems its all over the north island 🥺 Kia kaha to the fellow kiwis my love to you all xoxo

Auckland resident here. It was mainly flash flooding. 75% of our seasonal rainfall fell in a 24-hour period. A lot of people you're seeing still driving etc had no choice. They were trying to get home from work, school, or wherever. Some of the flood waters went from ankle depth to waist depth within an hour. Our infrastructure just could not handle that volume of water. It was literally the heaviest rain you have ever seen in your entire life, coming down non-stop for 24 hours. We had a major cyclone come through three weeks later. Over 400 people are still unaccounted for in the Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty regions, south east of Auckland 8 days later.

So on the Friday it was actually a pretty nice day and then it started raining but rain is pretty normal here so we thought nothing of it and then all of the sudden the rain was super heavy and there was just pools of water in the streets. It felt like it came out of nowhere

There’s so much rain because we got like a months worth of rain in just a few hours. It’s never happened in Auckland like this ever before. Also a lot of houses on the hills are now at the bottom of the hill.

A months? Was damn near almost a years worth. So far Auckland has had more rain this year than any on record, and has already had more rain than many years in just these 5 months.

Flooding is a common thing here in nz, normally not this bad and in all my years of being alive (23 years not much) I’ve never seen it that bad in Aucks. The communities will band together and help one another out while the companies like Higgins and whatnot will deal with the damages. Aside from all the fun they seem to be having, in their down time I hope them and their families are all right and making it through the damages.

Last time I saw this happen in Auckland I was about 9 & all the neighbour hood kids got out on their surf boards & boogy boards, it was such an awesome time... So when our back yard flooded & pretty much turned into a pool, I took my 2 little sons out to play & swim & they loved it so much 😂.. Some times you just need to create those good memories, you can always stress out later.

It definitely was NOT fun for me at the time 😅 our neighbours still haven’t returned home since the flood. But it just rained and rained and rained.. for hours on end and our drains or storm water system couldn’t handle the amount of water it was taking in. But loved how our people came together to help each other

We are naturally borned water people being in the pacific drawn to water is just natural to us. We all do deal with the aftermath in our own ways, so really we can't make ourselves stress or dwell in things too much that would just make us go down hill (Major Depression) things can be replaced overtime, just as long as your healthy and happy helps to be stronger for our loved ones and our fellow country men so we can help each other in anyway we can

We've had some uncharacteristic rain over the last few days. Normally it rains in Auckland for an hour or so then the sun comes out. I've lived in Auckland all my life and I've never seen this before. Auckland is really hilly so there are a number of houses that have been destroyed due to landslides. It's a terrible situation for most. Rock on Twano 😁🤙

Over a year ago a Tongan volcano threw 50 million tons of water into the air. We've also had a long La Niña season (trade winds direction). The result is a lot of rain the last year and a cyclone that aimed better at us tham the vast majority do.
Don't consider this normal NZ weather. Hopefully by the time you arrive we'll be a bit more stable. The year before last was a cracker in comparrison.

Yes some may have been having fun, or trying to make the best of it, but it's NOT a laughing matter if you're on the receiving end of it. Have never been so glad to be living on a 3rd floor apartment. Some got themselves stuck simply trying to get home, but who knows how many selfish fckn idiots were out there booting it at speed, without a thought for the homes being affected by the waves of floodwaters from these cars😠 Lots of people here in the Grey Lynn/Ponsonby community all supporting/helping each other out tho, which is great to see.

This may be funny to some, and make a good situation out of a bad one but this is also disrespectful to the lives lost in these floods and the people playing out there should have been helping people in their communities like the peoples homes that were flooded and the elderly and animals Y'alll inconsiderate Man, if i was up there i would have been helping my neighbours family and community out!! Nah you making yourselves looked messed up in the head Man WTF trust me not everyone in New-Zealand is like this there are always people that care about those suffering and those that are needing our communities support, Those people playing around in a crisis are selfish, you should all think about helping out the community or those that are vulnerable like pets and children and the Elderly Wheres the respect !! @@Summertnz Mate, what makes you think I haven''t lost everything..I've lived in Auckland for more years than I care to remember or divulge..Empathy is not only about understanding, compassion and providing support, it's also about dealing with the aftermath. You can either grieve the loss of your possessions or be grateful for the things that really matter. Your family are safe and dry, provide shelter and somewhere to sleep and eat. There are literally thousands of people in the same situation so worrying about something that's out of your control is pointless, All you can really do is wait and help out where you can until it's over, assess the damage, salvage what you can, then start the cleanup and rebuild.
So you can either grieve the loss or find a silver lining, not matter how bleak the reality may be, it's your choice how you choose to deal with it. Until then Kia Kaha.
