    I knew this worked on cars, but seeing that the GL has 2 solenoids, reverse and many "old" circuits, I wouldn't have even tried it for fear of making everything worse. In fact, I bought a spare solenoid to take with me in case something like that happened. Anyway, now I know it can be done. A big greeting from Argentina.

    Clifford! You saved us a huge hassle.
    Wife and I were stranded in a café parking lot 70 miles from home when our '98 Wing would not start. It had been running well but when I reversed out of our parking spot the bike would not go into neutral, at least I could not get the green neutral light to come on. While we were sitting in a nearby park under a shade tree I decided to check youtube while we waited for the AAA tow truck to arrive. I watched your video and tried the technique you showed here and it worked perfectly!!
    Needless to say we cancelled the tow and made it home with no further problems. Incidentally the problem has "fixed it's self" though I am wary of a recurrence.
    Thank you

    I wish I had watched this , since I was stranded 125 miles from home . I didn't follow procedure using reverse and blew the 5 amp fuse for the reverse and start circuit . luckily the tow truck driver used to own a Holding and said it would start if we pushed it , which it did . It would have meant a motel and waiting until Monday for dealership to open . when your not in the convenience of your garage , along the road , things just don't click in your mind . These little tips can make a big difference . Thanks for these videos .

    Great and simple video Cliff. I have a 96 GW SE with issues. The starter button seems to have a sweet spot where it works. The solenoid actually does a double click. Not sure if its the button or solenoid causing the issue. How about a solenoid replacement vid? Keep up the great work.

    • @CliffordRice
      @CliffordRice  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      spray some WD-40 in the starter button (make sure key is off) and then work the button back and forth. They start acting up a lot when there left in the weather for awhile. I've seen that tick fix many issue. As the for solenoid that double click sounds like it might be going out. You can pick one up on eBay pretty reasonable price (compare to going to Honda). Now its easy to change, just pull the battery and swap the wires the on the solenoid. Eventually I make a video on how to change that.

    • @jimlester5003
      @jimlester5003 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I noticed for the first time since I had my 96 GL1500 for 1 year, One day when I turned the handle bar slightly, the horn started blaring like an alarm at steady intervals. I don't remember if the key was in the ignition but it definitely was not on. When I did turn it on and started the bike the horn stopped after about 5 seconds. I was not aware the bike had an alarm on it, but the horn was a slightly different sound than just pushing the horn button. Are you aware of any stock alarm? your thoughts?? Keep up the good work

When I pressed the starter button there was a flash of light from that area of the battery box and the bike no longer shows any sign of life (warning lights) when I turn the key. I gather there is a relay that activates that solenoid.

  • @JoMusicChannel01
    @JoMusicChannel01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello: I certainly appreciate your videos and everything, it has been very informative. However, my 1988 Goldwing GL1500 cranks over, sounds like it wants to start but doesn't. The battery has been charged, check it and all checked out with that; checked the fuel, yes has a full tank; all of the electronics works well on the dash; and have checked the fluids on the bike. I think it's something with the fuel, I can hear the primer, but I am not sure if it's primer or not. Could you bounce some potential ideas where I could look at? Thank you, you're the best!

    • @CliffordRice
      @CliffordRice  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Mosley will it start with starting fluid? I had something similar happen to my bike my Ignition control modular went out. That is located near the front of the gas tank on the right side it's a big black box.

    • @JoMusicChannel01
      @JoMusicChannel01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clifford Rice: starting fluid, but the starter button works, its cranks over but not start. I will look at the starting fluid. I will check that out tomorrow and get back with you. What again am I looking for? Low fluids-yes?

    • @CliffordRice
      @CliffordRice  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Mosley, first I would do a normal check, fuel, spark. I suspect your Ignition control modular (the computer) has gone bad. Sadly there is no way to test it (that I know of) other than buying another used one on eBay and swapping it.

    • @JoMusicChannel01
      @JoMusicChannel01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay: I am pretty sure it's not a electrical issue. I spent a few hours taking the bike apart to test the wirings...sure enough (just to see) the bike crank and attempted to turn over with starter fluid sprayed into the air filter, throttle all the way out, it worked for a few seconds and then she quit. So which leads me to think it's a fuel system related deal, it's obviously getting enough spark to crank and attempt to run but not getting enough fuel for some reason...I want to say it's the fuel pump (don't want to go that route before testing everything), but I am guessing it might be a clogged line, or the petcock isn't working properly. What are you thinking? I would have to test the pump to see if it is priming and working properly, I might get away with replacing some component parts I found online to see if it satisfies the issue. Again, I will await to hear back from you. I don't go back over there until tomorrow.

    • @CliffordRice
      @CliffordRice  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Mosley, Yes in the vacuum petcock is not working it will not run. You can test the fuel pump by taking the hose off and turn the key on and see if fuel come out.
