  • On today's video I take questions from GoldwingDocs members on common electrical problems, then talk about how to diagnose and fix each of them.
    0:00 Intro
    0:58 Q1 - Bike dies when starter pushed
    3:30 Q2 - Bike won't start
    6:58 Q3 - Battery Overcharging

    Good video it may be worth mentioning on the first question a problem I had a few weeks back, very similar situation ignition and everything working but press the starter and nothing happens. Replaced the starter solenoid and starts first time.

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In that case you would not see any change in the battery voltage. If you hit the starter and you get nothing, or just a click, and the battery voltage stays more or less the same, then suspect a starter relay or the starter itself. If the battery voltage dips way down, then suspect the battery.

    I had that last issue on my GL1200 but came to the conclusion that the 36 year old Reg/Rec was shot
    A $25 Chinese made one from Ebay fixed everything 👍
    Just to say that sometimes it’s just an old worn out part that needs replacing.
    Great video!
    Thanks 🙏

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That $25 Chinese eBay one might not fix it for too long... :) Or it might, luck of the draw, really!
      The gold standard in terms of aftermarket Reg/Recs is really the Shindengen MOSFET unit.

    Hello, Thank you for your videos, they are very informative. I myself have the problem you talk about in your video, the one where when you put the ignition key, everything lights up and when you push the start button, everything goes out and the starter does not turn. A "tick" is heard in the relay box. at least, a relay engages.
    I recharged my battery with my stabilized power supply, under 14v, it first pumped 2.8A, then 0.5A after about 7 to 8 hours. there, it gives 12.7Volt. The starter relays A and B do not work at all, I disassembled and tested my relay B (solenoid) it works well with my lab power supply, but I don't know if it is still good for a strong current . My relay A (to the left of the battery) does not receive current and does not activate when I push start!
    I checked all the relays, they all trigger, but I don't know if the internal contacts are still good.
    The start button is good, then we hear a relay.
    Tomorrow I will shunt the solenoid to see if the starter spins.
    For everything to go out like that, it's necessarily an opening of the general power supply circuit, isn't it? Especially since the battery voltage does not move, if it had a short circuit, it should drop..
    If you have any advice, what I should look at where on the bike, I would love to hear your opinion. :-)

    Great content, I currently have a 1996 GL1500 that was passed down to me from my grandfather. It has 177,xxx miles and runs great but I have a issue with the cruise. He checked all the switches on it and everything was working fine, I changed the cruise control valve and all the hoses due to it being plastic and rubber age was showing but the cruise is still not setting at speed. I've read over all the goldwing docs and cant seem to figure it out. Could you shed some advise for myself and others. Thank you for the content.

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cruise control system is quite complex - in the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, the diagnostic tree for diagnosing cruise control problems is 12 pages long. I'd suggest posting on the GoldwingDocs forum and we can help you out - it's beyond the scope of a TH-cam comment!

  • @CraigTM15

    I had a similar event that turned out to be a bad cell in the battery. Didn't notice that my tender was telling me this.

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if only one cell is sulfated - the 6 cells are in series, so if one is sulfated and choking off the amount of current it can supply, it means it chokes that current for the entire battery.

    Late in coming to your channel, My mistake I'm finding!
    I just bought an 06 GL1800 and for my long distance riding I am in need of more power points. Can I put a fuse block off of the Accessory connection from the fuse panel or should I wire directly to two of the "free" fuse locations? Those "free" fuse locations have constant power where I would prefer they only come on with the ignition.
    How would I wire to the fuse block and only have them come on with the bike running?
    Thank You
    You all are in my prayers
    Hoka Hey

    • @GoldwingDocs

      I would definitely use an Electrical Connection Power Plate. You can see our review here: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10890
      They now have a newer, universal one that fits any bike. Make sure you replace the cheap relay that comes with it with a quality one, I had problems with that (relay heats up, restricts voltage).

    2007 GL1800HPN - Bike died on a ride. Smelled something burning, volt meter showed between 13-14. Stopped, at idle showed 9 and engine had a grinding sound. Charged battery on a trickle charger once towed home. On a full charge, the engine only turned over a couple of times very slowly before clicking. Replaced battery. Same issue. Alternator is less than a year old. Any thoughts?

    I have a 1991 GL1500 SE. When I turn on the cruise control the light goes on saying "Cruise on", but when I hit the "Set" button, nothing happens.
    Any suggestions on what to check to get the cruise to work?

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The troubleshooting diagnostic tree for diagnosing cruise control problems like this takes up almost 20 pages in the service manual - a bit too much to try to cover in a TH-cam comment. I'd highly suggest checking out the GoldwingDocs forum, as this problem is covered often. goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6

    I have a Goldwing F6B Deluxe that are well known when you are gliding to a stop and not using your brakes yet the front forks, and handlebars start shaking. Other than buying an aftermarket clamp for the forks what can I do to stop this?

    • @GoldwingDocs
      @GoldwingDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is deceleration speed wobble, and it happens to many Wings when decelerating through about 35 mph. It happens more if you do not have a solid grip on the handlebars. Fork brace can definitely help, so can retorquing the steering head bearings properly. It also happens with newer front tires more often than worn.

    • @GoldwingDocs

      It's hooked up into the headset in your helmet. You tune the CB, when it receives, it stops playing the radio so you can hear the CB. There is a transmit button on the left handgrip that lets you talk back.
