I'm tearing down my dad's gl1500se 50th anniversary. Your videos have been highly effective in helping me get this job done. Thank you Clifford for your time. I've saved my father about $800
Well, I'm 1:40 into this so far, and with all you're complaining of...I would suspect a bad vacuum leak. I'll watch the rest and come back to update this in a few minutes. UPDATE: I talked with an old retired Goldwing mechanic friend of mine (500 miles away), and he told me if I can hear my vacuum leak , it's a leaking vacuum line that comes off the manifold below the carbs, and runs to the left side of the bike. He said the rubber line degrades from E10 fuel settling in it. He's fixed dozens in the last 20 years. Glad to have this video to show how to remove the carbs to get at it!!!
This is such a helpful video. I can't believe almost 84k people have watched it and only 869 could take the two seconds to click the like button. What a bunch of asses. Cliff, we all appreciate it, especially we that follow through and tackle this job ourselves. The ones that don't at least know why they're paying big money to get it done!
I’m in my shop right now and I just got the carburetors off of my 1991 GL 1500 that I picked up from a guy for $700 cash. It hadn’t run in 10 years and I believe after cleaning the carburetors I should have it fully running, thank you so much for this video. I couldn’t have done it without it.
Thank you Clifford, without your explanations I would not have been able to solve that problem....so many hoses, after an hour I finally found the damaged one. Best regards from Switzerland.
I was out in the garage yesterday and followed your video step by step, a struggle to actually pull them off but off they came and left the boots on just like in your vid, a real godsend, thank you so much!
I just put an air cleaner on my bike 98 goldwing SE thanks to your videos I am able to do a lot of these things myself I watched all your videos and they are fantastic you showed me how to put plugs in the bike you showed me how the change the air cleaner and my next task is to change the front brake pads I did watch your video fortunately my pads are good right now but I want to put new ones on thank you and please keep the videos coming
Thanks for the video(s). Your explanations and detailed work. I appreciated your comments on keeping trac of the miscellaneous screws and bolts. Even if I’ve put all these in containers I’ve often been slowed down because I can’t remember what goes where. As a result I’ve taken to putting the screws, bolts and other small parts back in the holes they came from. It’s a little extra work taking them back out then putting back in but it helps me in the long run. I’m the kind of person who will spend an hour looking something (a $2 screwdriver).
Good videos. Very thorough, and good detail on the camera work. I am picking up a 1991 GL1500 this weekend, so I am bookmarking videos like this because I know eventually things will need to be fixed. Nice to have the little tips on how to remove the plastic, hidden screws, etc. Thanks for taking the time to put out these videos. :)
Found this video by accident I totally enjoyed the content and the presenter. Clifford Rice, you did a great job. I ride a Harley, but was riveted to the screen.
I have been dreading this job but man I am very thankful you made this video my friend. I have gotten them off my 96 aspencade and cant wait ti get this thing running again. Thank you for the video
Thanks for the walk through it was a Big Big help . went to Harbor freight and bought the special tools i needed for less than twenty bucks ., only had an issue with one of the heat exchanger lines under the carbs , so i unmounted the cruse control vacuum module on the side and it freed up enough cable clearance to allow me to cut the water line and remove the carbs.
At 2:30 (ish) you said you've done this three times on this one and more on other ones, so I was skeptical. The next 26 minutes into the video was very helpful because someone is selling their 1991 GL1500 for $1,000 and it has carb problems. He'd have to pay me to take it now.
Hay Cliff ,Ryan here on my carburetors used sea foam and let them sit for a week and it works grate and she is running just like new.wish to say thank you.
Cliff, thanks for the great videos. I have the manual but this really clarified the job! Ive got it off and about to begin the rebuild. Good man. Good man.
Thank you so so much for these videos.I have a 1988 GL1500 and recently had to remove to change out both jets in carb.--Talk about a life saver {not to mention saving over $800.00 labor}!! Great job -- thanks again. -- Richard
Cliff you saved me a butt load of time trying to figure this out by using the shop manual! Thank-you very much! I have a 94 SE; I can't complain about the gas mileage (35-38) but last fall it developed a small idle surge when hot. 700-1100 rpm. Then I went out and started it up on Thanksgiving, just to give it a little run time, and after it warmed up I had white smoke coming up through the handle bars that smelled like fuel. So needless to say I need to tear it down and find the leak. Might as well replace the vacuum lines and tear down the carbs while I'm there. I'm okay with the carb rebuild; it was getting them off that had me a little intimidated.
Just got a 97 gl1500 and watched the video just for the fun of it. Im not having carb issues yet. Im glad this isn't like the valkyrie where it has 6 carbs.
great video, good time check and change out the two foam sub-filters [air and cruise] especially the one on the right hand side (most often neglected in my experience). Easy to replace and quite cheap (can make your own easily from dollar store foam paint brush).
****** a very, very good tip.when you take the carbs off,do yourself a favor and spray paint the outside of the bottom boot clamp a bright color.i used orange and i made sure to spray paint the head of the screw.that way when looking for the screw to tighten later, you can see them much easier.
Hi Cliff, Been through all the gl 1500 vids on your channel. This one must be one of the most frightening :-)). You are the best resource out there for gl 1500 owners ! Thank you for all your efforts and time ! Greetings from Belgium !
Thanks a lot Clifford! Fantastic ! Here from Portugal. Have a 1995 GL 1500 to check big leak n the carburetor… looks like problems with the float bowl or shut of valve on the carbs .. but don’t know.. firstwill try take carb off .your video is perfect!
Hey Clifford I really liked this video cause I've had street bikes alot threw the years and I've been wanting another one and I love the color of your Goldwing I seen one probably a couple years after it came out and fell in love with the color thanks for the video
This is going to be ALOT of help when I pull my carbs, showing all the "hidden" or difficult to get to lines and where they are is going to make life much easier. One thought though is you should probably put a link or the info for your carb guru. I can guarantee it will Definitely bring him more business. As I saw someone else say it would be nice to have someone trustworty with the midas touch to send our carbs to. Also, how much does he roughly charge for a rebuild usually? Maybe ask him for us if you would please. My bike only has 69k on it but my mpg is terrible "about 27mpg" im sure it needs synched and severely cleaned. When I bought my 89 it had sat for about 5 yrs in a storage unit. Your videos have been a great help and perhaps one day we will run into each other at some Goldwing gathering and I can thank you in person. God Bless and Merry Christmas
I haven't found any evidence of mouse nests and I've had it pretty far apart. I've taken the breather box off completely once but I don't have the 90-degree needlenose yet just the straight ones. Sooner or later here I will go ahead and get the carburetors pulled all the way off I just need a good shop to send them to and an idea of roughly how much it's going to cost me for a rebuild
Darrell Fields I cleaned a set for a 1200 goldwing that wouldn't start. It didn't cost anything but time and the bike started and run like new. The hardest part is getting them off the bike.
Great vid, mine GL 1500 88 model has a surge at takeoff , runs fine after 1200---1500 rpm. bike sat over a 1 1/2 year I'm hoping it's gum buildup in carb so I added mechanic in a bottle cleaner. I hope it helps so i wont have to do this. LOL
I’m looking for the coolant leak source somewhere behind the radiators, typically worse in cold weather. I do see moisture on one of the on engine coolant sensors.
You sir, are a lifesaver! Between taking mine apart and rebuilding my carbs, and putting them back together, I suffered a terrible accident and was severely burned on my legs. After many skin grafts, I’m now able to walk again and even ride, but Im not physically able to move like I used to do to put it all back together. Can I bring it to you to help me with it? I have a 96 GL 1500 SE. with less than 30k miles and I really miss riding her. Yes, I see you live in Texas and I’m in Mississippi. I’m willing to bring it to you and pay you whatever you need. I hope you will consider my plea.
Clifford Rice Kind sir, you can’t imagine my joy! I sent you an email from my gmail account. Please look in spam if you don’t see it. I look forward to meeting you! A thousand thanks!
Hey once again, these carb woes, that kills: I just put some super cleaned carbs (cleaned by a professional motorcycle mechanic in his shop) back on the bike, following the steps provided in your video. I checked for leaks, I checked the seals, vaccuum hoses, I checked the steering column even; however, it started up yesterday after I took the plugs out and started the bike, there was fluid in the cylinders. After that she started right up. Put the air box back on-when the plastics were back on too-did the idle. Ran great took it to the car wash and lightly washed the plastic down careful not to put excessive water down on the bike. Started right back up again after that. Took the bike home, it was at a friend's house, now this morning on the way to work, the bike started up and ran with the choke on. After a few seconds I took the choke off, maybe it was still cold, but it's like 60 out. So, it completely died, didn't want to start back up and there...back to square one it seems like...three hundred plus dollars later...Can you think of anything? I am desperate at this point.
Did you check your gas tank to see if had any trash in it? Because the trash will screw up those crabs and they will have to be clean again. also check your fuel filter as well. It were i would start.
Yeah, I checked the tank. I rode today for like 250 miles, a hard, hard start. It was a pain. A few hours ago, I tried to start the bike, it wasn’t at operating temp, started really rough and then died. So, I am still back at square one, I took the battery off and charge it overnight. I will try in the morning and see if it’s hard after i filled up twice.
I have a bad vacuum leak in the front of my carb. I can spray carb cleaner in the front and my idle will come back down to 900 rpm. after a few seconds it goes back up to 1.5 or 2k rpm. I'm getting ready to head to harbour freight and get that 18 inch long phillips screwdriver and those 2 needle nose pliers. I'm thinking now that one or both boots that hold the carbs on have hair line cracks or dry rotted and causes the leaks. Hope to hear back from you today.
Sir, I'm thinkin your GL1500 vids are the most informative on the internet and everything. Hey how about an R&R for the front fairing. I need help badly. I even have the pro service manual. Today is 8/7/2021
I’ll do most of the work on my 97 GL1500 myself ..... with the exception of cracking the engine case and messing with the carbs. I know my limitations and it’s best to leave this kinda work to the pros.
After watching your video's and reading all sorts of post I've decided to take my carbs off and rebuild them and take care of any other maintenance while they are off. The one thing I wanted to do though is to have all the tools I needed before I DUG IN .The one tool I cant figure out is the tool I need for adjusting the air pilot screws. In the manual it says to use the D socket for this but if some one has done this before they may have replaced them with standard slotted air pilot screws instead..I have tried to look to see what style screws are in there by looking in through the front over the radiators as shown in the manual , but I don't see how this can be done , let alone fit a tool in from the front to adjust them? Ant ideas from you or any body else would be helpful.
Great info , started watching them before I went to get a 95 SE , sure enough is idling rough ,due to sitting in storage for too long , only 47k on it , would you recommend to get a kit with all the seals and stuff when cleaning the carbs? Or could you share your guy’s info to find how much he charges ? I’ll ship my carbs if he is willing to do the job, thx again .
I have one extra stubborn air intake screw. I have been patient, penatrating for 2 days, waiting, trying, penatrating again, putting a ton of force downward on it... And it's almost stripped. It's starting. I have failed. It will need replaced, hopefully I will be able to get it out. Currently on a penatration break... Stock in PB and now liquid wrench are on the rise.
Got it out with a screw extractor. The screw does come out of the air filter housing. The thing it's in has 2 slits down the side that allows you to spread it enough to wiggle the screw out.
Would love to see a video from you on changing the thermostat. I can't for the life of me see how to get to the rear bolt by going through the front with the radiators removed. Is it easier to get to the thermostat by removing the carbs? I was hoping to see a view straight-down in once you took off the carbs. From what I read on the forums, replacing a thermostat on a GL1500 is one of the hardest jobs there is. Thank you!
I thought it was fairly easy, remove right side fairing , radiator fan and just remove radiator bolt do not remove radiator. use 3/4 inch deep socket to remove the thermo after you unplug it. Just for added safety I put on a little 0range silicone on the threads. reassemble.
Clifford, I am in the middle of pulling my carbs on my 88. I am chasing a vacuum leak with only a slight surge issue. I have stopped 3 times to re-watch you and make sure I am on track! The oil in your air filter box is like mine as well, why is it these and is it a concern? Should I be looking at something while the carbs are off? I need to find your carb Guy!!! Is he willing to do more, I bet he could do it full time and make a good living! Thanks a bunch for helping so many people out!!!
Shawn Stiner most likely it's gasoline that was loading up from the carburetor. They start doing that when they acting up. If your serious about getting them rebuild let me know, it won't be free, but it won't be near as expensive as the dealership.
when this engine was built there was no alcohol in gasoline. Now that there is, do the carb jets need to be increased to prevent engine running too lean thereby increasing engine heat?
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to explain to all of use how to take off the carbs, awesome work! I watched it, and just one question: At about 36:55 you point out two hoses that need to be taken off. Are both of them coolant-hoses, or just one?
Carbs in a injector world lol Good time to get a after market retrofitted injector setup, IF they have such a thing . Good for sea level to top of a mountain range and setting up two carbs to work in synch must be horrid hard .
I have the exact same bike you are working on and got a problem with the adjustable air ride. It was functioning fine using the increase rocker button and then it just quit one day but the funny thing is the air compressor still works when you do the pump check and push the increase button it comes on but won't pump the adjustable shock. At first I thought it might have just been a relay but the pump works so then I thought maybe the switch? But that works when you're trying to use the air pump. No fuses are blown so I'm kind of add a stump, the bikes too heavy to not have the air ride to adjust your ride so you kind of need the air ride adjuster. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot enjoy your videos like I said the bike that you're working on in these videos is the exact same bike I have color and all so it's like you're working on my bike lol.
Hi could you tell me what all there is for coolant hoses in there. Ive bought a 91 last summer and i am curious if and what there is for hoses I should replace due to the age
First, THANK YOU. You video helped. However, after putting them back in, I have a fuel issue. The bike was down for 5 days. After putting the carbs back in and making sure everything is tight, fuel is NOT getting past the vacuum petcock valve. Fuel pump is working. Everything else is working, just no fuel past the vacuum petcock. I did check the valve, no tips or sticks. Any ideas???
Stripped out 2 screws inside the air filter box on my 96 gl1500, will 4 suffice, or should I have all 6.? Also, do you have a video showing fuel pump replacement?
Had a fuel leak this morning when I was backing out. Noticed a trail to what was a puddle. Put the bike back and took my truck to work. Came home and the puddle was gone. Started it up and let it run to see if it did it again and no fuel. Turned it off and ate dinner and went out to check on it still no leak. I talked to my mechanic here and he's thinking that the floats might be sticking. Also my idle is fluctuating alot. Never done this before and trying to figure it out. This is a 98 1500 se. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
When trying to pull vacuum lines off of a fitting, instead of just pulling the line...use your long needle nose or short needle nose pliers and grab each line where it is attached to the fitting and roll the line/hose 1/8 of a turn or so just to break it lose on each one. Then they just pull of easily. Did you die? I have not hear back from you on my problems. thanks.
the very hard to get back on vac line with the big clamp......when my bike is running, that like makes a heck of alot of noise. What does it go to and what does it do??? Mine sounds like an air vent to bolts in a spinning can. never heard a vac line make noise like that
Thinking of buying 1993 Aspencade 1500 listed for sale. It has been sitting for a while in someone's garage and the seller says it needs a clean or rebuilt carburetor to run again. I could remove it from the motorcycle but I have no idea how to send it to who can do the work it needs. Any ideas? Also, what price range could I expect to pay for labor and cost of service? I live out of San Antonio, Texas area.
Clifford thank you bro for sharing your experience with these goldwing bike's I would be really lost without your help. I have a 1995 GL -1500SE 20th anniversary issue before I start the process of removing the carbs I was wondering it I could get your thoughts on the problem I'm having? So the bike was setting for about 8 months and it started right up but gasoline started pouring out the side a front of the engine I was wondering what you may think if it's a busted fuel line or the carbs need to be rebuilt it has 90k on the bike. Thank you for any advice
Brilliant- thank you. I have a surging tick over and think it may well be a vacuum leak. I see where those tubes are in your video. Is there any way they can be replaced from the side without removing the carbs?
@@CliffordRice Thanks Clifford. The bike had been stood at least a year and at first had a massive hiccup at around1800 revs and a faltering idle. I ran a couple of tanks of carb cleaner through it which was better but not perfect and the idle still hunted up and down. I took the carbs off in the end- what a bitch but easier than it might have been thanks to your video. all the vacuum lines looked ok- the reason I thought they were the issue was because spraying carb cleaner in the general area made the revs rise- i now think it was just getting in to the intake. Anyway- I have cleaned the carbs- though they looked good and it does actually seem better. Awaiting new plugs and air filter now . Thanks again- it is much appreciated.. .
Would you be able to do a video on how to install the "air ducts" on a 1500 when istalling a new fairing. I can't figure out how they fit for the life of me . Thanks..!
I’m also having clock and radio memory problems. Pre set either and after ignition is off. All memory pre sets are gone after ignition is turned back on. Fuses all good. Anything ?
Have not had a chance to tear it down yet, but my gold wing is leaking fuel on the left side and pretty quickly. I would think the right side looks like where the main fuel line and filter is. Any thoughts on what I could be looking at ?
I have a 96 interstate and the set up is quite a bit different . I don't have those hoses on back . They are lines that have ts that are easily accessed on the top tight. The problem I'm having is diaphragm screws. Can't see em. Lol
Hello Clifford i have a 99 gl1500 goldwing se it was given to me and i have all the same issues you describe in your video on the carb removal wondering if you know anyone reliable to rebuild them in my area for reasonable cost as i'm a disabled veteran on a tight fixed income
I'm tearing down my dad's gl1500se 50th anniversary. Your videos have been highly effective in helping me get this job done. Thank you Clifford for your time. I've saved my father about $800

thanks for your movies. They are very useful. I bought GL 1500 .94 year. Greetings from Poland. Thomas.
This video helped me to decide that I will not buy a GL 1500.

The engineers at Honda Goldwing division definitely don't want Shadetree mechanics working on these beauties.

Yes thank you for the help I got the rebuild done and only thing I had to do was prime it with starting fluid runs mint

You are really amazing. Thanks for the time you put in. More more
Yeah I really need this guys name and number because I need his help with my carbs
This video was extremely useful thank you very much was the same as an 89 Goldwing
I have an 88 and I still like your vids Keep it up and don't take it personnely
i don't, otherwise i wouldn't be making videos anymore.
Excellent quality video. I just bought a 93 that will only run with the choke on. So I think I need to take this job on tomorrow. 😬
Wish me luck! 😂

Very Helpful! Thank you for the video.
I would be gald to help you out. Send me an email at carice101@gmail.com, that way we can talk more about this in detail.
Thanks man. Helped my shop out
Thanks, love these video. Garage environment same like my )). Very helpful video . Training to change cooling sensor under filter. Thanks.
Thanks for the video, could anyone give a hands up is the carbs are interchangeable? Mine is a GL1500 from 1990, will a 1996 carb fit?
Great video Cliff, enjoyed the info, I have a 95 GL 1500 that is idling high , don't know what could be causing that, keep up the good work.
What did it turn out to be? My 1990 is idling about 2000 and cant get it down? Bad vacuum line or clogged jet?
Sir, I'm thinkin your GL1500 vids are the most informative on the internet and everything. Hey how about an R&R for the front fairing. I need help badly. I even have the pro service manual. Today is 8/7/2021
Thanks cliff your vision was very helpful.
your welcome
Thank You !!!! I did mine and it runs great!!
Another great video. you should get paid for this.
As a side note, the coolant temperature sensor that tells the ecm the engine temp can also cause idle surging...
Have You ever drained the carbs via drain plugs on the Bike ?? I can not see how to get to them . Any hints would be great , Thank you for this Vid.
im thinking id be running gallons of cleaners thru it before i would try this undertaking. that is one hell of a chore.
Just for added safety I put on a little 0range silicone on the threads. reassemble.
I am so glad my bike runs like a Swiss clock, I don't think I could ever do that job
Soon as I saw a Ford pulling in I knew I was at the right place.
@@CliffordRice can you give me his phone number not looking for a free job just done right
You really know your 1500's
Very well explained also
Aaigght :-)
thanks
when this engine was built there was no alcohol in gasoline. Now that there is, do the carb jets need to be increased to prevent engine running too lean thereby increasing engine heat?
Clifford, do you have any points on chasing down a bad surging issue after starting? It is driving me crazy...
anything resembling never seize to use on those hose connections when you put back together?
Great help..thank you Cliff
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to explain to all of use how to take off the carbs, awesome work! I watched it, and just one question: At about 36:55 you point out two hoses that need to be taken off. Are both of them coolant-hoses, or just one?
both
Would I you do a video on clutch line replacement on Goldwing thanks
Outstanding! Can't thank you enough, Can you share the name of your carb guy. Thank you for sharing
Ok thanks great channel you are life saver
Carbs in a injector world lol Good time to get a after market retrofitted injector setup, IF they have such a thing . Good for sea level to top of a mountain range and setting up two carbs to work in synch must be horrid hard .
Thanks for posting this!!
Having a hell of a time finding diaphragm screws apparently there is a rubber shield around the carbs
Am I looking at it right
I have the exact same bike you are working on and got a problem with the adjustable air ride.
Who does your carb rebuild? I need mine done too - thanks-
Had a fuel leak this morning when I was backing out.
Had a hell of a time getting the diaphragm screw out on right side the air horn is in the way with hoses.
Brilliant- thank you. I have a surging tick over and think it may well be a vacuum leak. I see where those tubes are in your video. Is there any way they can be replaced from the side without removing the carbs?
Sure, just depends how hard you to fight, but yeah its possible
Thanks again- it is much appreciated.. .
Good video thanks
Would you be able to do a video on how to install the "air ducts" on a 1500 when istalling a new fairing. I can't figure out how they fit for the life of me .
Thanks..!
I’m also having clock and radio memory problems. Pre set either and after ignition is off. All memory pre sets are gone after ignition is turned back on. Fuses all good. Anything ?
Yeah on 30:01 the two rubber seal on top of the carbs what is the name of these two seals
I have a 1998 goldwing se haveto replace oil pump. Can you help
Have not had a chance to tear it down yet, but my gold wing is leaking fuel on the left side and pretty quickly. I would think the right side looks like where the main fuel line and filter is. Any thoughts on what I could be looking at ?
Yeah the thingy is a map sensor right beside the radiator cap
When do you think you are going to make a coolant flush vidio for your gl 1500
I have a 96 interstate and the set up is quite a bit different . I don't have those hoses on back . They are lines that have ts that are easily accessed on the top tight.
The problem I'm having is diaphragm screws. Can't see em.
Lol
The hoses were there lol but the diaphragm screwv on right side was a dirty mo
Hello Clifford i have a 99 gl1500 goldwing se it was given to me and i have all the same issues you describe in your video on the carb removal wondering if you know anyone reliable to rebuild them in my area for reasonable cost as i'm a disabled veteran on a tight fixed income
