Some people would call it long winded and criticize you for going too far on the take-apart but I say kudos for fixing (and recording) it despite never having taken one apart. “Still don’t know what I’m doing “. LOL.
I will be taking the starter off my newly acquired ‘82 Goldwing to try and make it start with the push button so this video helped.
Love the narration, motorcycle philosophy and happy attitude. You are a good man Glenn!

Before taking it apart put ink marks on the joints so it goes back the same way.

I have a french boss and started to get 50% french ads that mysteriously slowed down when lockdowns forced us to close for months.

I keep a tube of Honda Moly in my garage for honda drive lines in the diff. I wouldve used it on the 2 starter gears.
As for the "0" ring...a stripe of painters tape and a bead of black RTV would keep water out. Remove the tape for sharp lines that look like an o ring. Lol
I commend your work, admire your trying and fixing it over just throwing a new part on. Very good video and great work!

All the 1100's where built in Marysville Ohio.so it wouldn't have japanese characters. I like your video's.I have an 81 an a 82 that I am restoring. I got a Honda manual with bikes and a Clymers manual I bought online saves alot of time. Thanks for posting.

When you said hate to buy a hundred dollar starter for a fifty dollar motorcycle, I can relate, I got mine for 100 but it was parked in a basement for 22 years so it's in great shape with 44k miles.

Is it normal for the armature shaft to move back and forwards when assembled.

Holy crap tyvm. Im decent mechanically but never done a starter before. Very simple and didnt expect a guide for my particular starter . The starter is like $350 for a non Chinese rebuild in canada or $15ish for brushes etc.

Just had to take mine out. 81 GL1100. Left me at the pub. Lucky I had the wife with me to push it to jump start. Got home and checked OEM. 360$. Crap ones 75 to 100. Took mine out and apart, electronic spray, shined up armature, brushes were good, back in and working. At least once . Keep the shiny side up .

Hey! Great vid! Btw, the ridges on the screwdriver handle usually for a wrench so you can take it easier on your hands.

Hey Glenn, any advice on seating the bearing race on a final drive of a GL1100 without any "special" tools?

I have never done it... can you find a large socket or pipe that fits the race and tap it in? I suggest a large hammer but a light tap.

It would have been much nicer to watch the starter working than a close up of your shoulder.
