    I was part of this scene when HF was released for the VB. The letter Ben published to PlanetVB was not 100% truthful. The way it happened was that a project was posted to PlanetVB and the devs fighting engine was discussed. Ben contacted the person and he was able to get in touch with the dev (although it kinda makes sense that MK is acutally Mr. Anon, after reading his ROM hacking posts and coding posts). It was from there that they started to build Street Fighter for the Virtual Boy. When the game started to reach a playable status, Ben reached out to key members of PlanetVB to release a physical cart. That's correct, Ben was 100% involved from the beginning with its planning and release! It was told to me that he planned to get back some of his investment. Due to a fear of Capcom coming after him (and probably the back-lash from the VB community over this game), he has never admitted this to the public. During this time I was in daily contact with 1 of the people who supplied the CIB release. I was also in contact with the person who created the board for the CIB release. Both have confirmed that the intentions from the start were to release a CIB copy for sale. In fact, the dev received a kickback from each cart sold by these key members of PlanetVB. This is why the cost of each CIB HF release was $125 and not the $55-75 of previous releases (from the same people). The way you are reporting this story is out of order and incorrect, but I blame the letter Ben posted to PlanetVB. While his letter brings the conspiracy to a close, it was untruthful and paints an incorrect picture. HF caused a lot of issues among the VB community. It is directly related to this game and some personal issues with those who would come next, that Richard left the scene and no longer produces the FlashBoy+. I own two original (1st run) CIB copies of HF and a VB link cable. I purchased the CIB copies directly from those involved off the initial 'pre-order list'. These were the same people who privately shared with me many truths about this games development. Ben's words are not honest and you should not consider his post the true 'history' of this game!

    After watching your video and reviewing the circumstances you mentioned, I'm going to *politely* disagree with the decision to still not dump the (SFII) rom somewhere. I'd think there are ways for the guy to distance himself adequately and aid in leaking, but what do I know. Yeah, it is upsetting.
    Great job on the video/series.

      Thanks! Yeah, I didn’t want to give an opinion on this in the video, be the condition certainly changes when it’s being sold and the public becomes aware of it’s existence. After creating CIB versions and releasing them, the gate has been opened.

    Finally got around to watching this. Great work as always and on my favorite system to boot! Sorry for my absence. I hope to be back into things soon.
    Some good news about Hyper Fighting is that it’s been publicly dumped now and can be emulated or flashed onto one of Kevin Mellott’s carts.
    I wish Flying Henry would show up one day along with Dragon Hopper.
    It kills me how people hold onto these roms. I’d gladly dump anything I found. At least we have a great community with people like Ben in it.

  • @drgribb

    I never understood why the Virtual Boy did so poorly. I always thought it was super cool and my brother and I really wanted one, but our parents couldn't much afford it. We convinced our parents to sign up for a membership at Blockbuster (they HATED Blockbuster, so this was no small feat) just so we could rent one there a couple times. I think it was the only thing we ever rented from Blockbuster.
    Our cousins were lucky enough to get one though and I would always ask to play it when we went over for holidays haha. It's a shame that the games go for so much money these days, because I still fantasize about getting one. One day...
    Also, soundtrack for Red Alarm is incredible. I still pull it up on TH-cam and listen to it every once in a while.

      Thanks for sharing your story. Reading about individual experiences regarding the topics I’m covering is one of the best parts of doing this show. One interesting tidbit is Nintendo negotiated with Blockbuster so that the rental price Gould be applied against the purchase of the unit. The intention was to mitigate any perceived risk in renting the unit. It was Nintendo saying, “Rent it on ya, because we guarantee once you try it, you’ll by it.”

    The Hyper Fighting game can't be released widely? It kind of is these days. You just need to know where to look and who to ask. The ROM was finally dumped with permission and all that on a public posting on Planet VirtualBoy. If you use an emulator or have a kit(coming this year) with the space to fit the big cartridge, you can in fact play it. People also do sell completed copies and have I think about a year-ish now. I've got one of the original old run copies of the cart and it's truly magnificent.

      I do realize it's out there, though I haven't seen this embrace of its distribution on PVB. I think a ton of people, myself included, are looking forward to the Hyper Flash.

    • @trialsjones6372
      @trialsjones6372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ROM was 100% not dumped with permission. There was a member asking for Kevins dumper. This member had someone ready to mail one his way so he could dump the game and release it. These were the intentions and stated publicly. I know for a fact that this person was also in contact with a video game museum and was going to supply a backup of the ROM for their archive. After this public conversation, the ROM was released by an anonymous user. If you know the true history of those involved, it's pretty easy to guess who released it.

    • @trialsjones6372
      @trialsjones6372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NekoHazrd This is correct. Having been asked not to do it, Kevin Mellot went ahead and released copies of HF for sale. In fact, from almost the very beginning you could contact Kevin to get one of his Cart Only releases. PlanetVB member "johnnyphantom" has all remaining orginal HF boards and could realase an *official* 2nd wave, but never has and stated he probably will never get around to it.
