    Ultimate Nintendo? N64 Review Guide done via software emulation. For those asking, here's clarification from Pat himself. drive.google.com/file/d/15-dSUY9N8sbhySvYkJ5G6DfDsdkG6rVY/view

    • @abaroners
      @abaroners ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For someone with so many resources at his disposal, as Pat has, it's shameful to be using software emulation to write an "ultimate" guide for the N64.
      The N64 emulators are still a far cry from the real hardware in terms of timing and speed accuracy AFAIK; so it's pretty bad that anyone is creating so-called "ultimate" N64 reviews based on such inaccurate and hacky emulators.
      Also, no clear statement on which emulators and settings were used. God knows if some games were played using HD texture packs, widescreen hacks, and whatnot. No way to determine the input lag either.
      People who try to sugarcoat shit like that should be ashamed.
      Thanks for exposing this freakin' mess of a "guide".

I called Greg out on Nintendoage along the youtubers in his video to spotlight that a batch of kickstarters didn't get their copy. As I said, great video! However, apart from what @Phillip Bailey pointed out, there are a couple other questions/concerns I might have about it. Chief among those:
      *1) Proposing The Geek Getaway as some sort of real version of the authentic voice that Pat merely purports to be.*
      *2) Collaborating with SmashJT.*
      *3) Having a strong stance against the use of emulation for N64 game reviews.*
      1) In his [admittedly] brilliant _Amico Christmas_ video, Pat blasted the "shills," including Tony ( @The Geek Getaway ), for endorsing investment in the brand. Moreover, that segment follows a clip of Tony denying ever doing that with a flashback to him most *definitely* and gushingly doing that. Regardless of Tony's sincere confidence in the project at the time, you can't deny that he failed his followers. This, of course, is completely separate from the issue of him being denied his due credit, but given what I just brought up, do you still see him as that figure the community needs?
      2) While I certainly command Jeff for coming to his senses when overwhelmed with facts, his prior ill-thought-out and vicious attacks on the skeptics were totally uncalled for. Also, unless I'm missing context, accusing Ian of fraud for crowdfunding a medical bill is indefensible and perhaps even irredeemable. Could these concerns about the quality of Jeff's character be alleviated?
      3) One might argue that there could be more to a *truly* authentic gaming experience besides a proper controller and accurate emulation. Would your stance against emulators for review plays also extend to other systems, like arcade machines? Suppose I'm reviewing some brutal early 90s bullet curtain coin muncher for a similarly marketed book; should I bring a bucket of quarters to my local arcade to ensure a "genuine" gameplay experience?
      Anyway, love this video and would love to hear your thoughts on this (and @Phillip Bailey's thoughts).

You eventually hit a dead end and cannot move forward. I think James Rolf / AVGN had the right idea and made a feature length movie. If a person cannot expand beyond making videos about the same hobby, you start to feel stuck.

Also liked you did mention our distain if you will for Brett Weiss, and our favorite “buh my booowhk” catch-phrase, and he is who he is on camera 100%. As far as Pat goes I always saw him as arrogant. I remember seeing him on James and Mike mondays and he was talking down to them, like he was better than them. And there’s a clip of James doing a panel, and Pat was in the audience, raised his hand to ask a question, then gets up and invites himself to go on stage to sit next to James. The look on James’ face was awkward and annoyed, and Pat then steals the panel.

      @@Jenovi I actually went through this fairly recently. I got sick of issues with N64 emulation. The button layout with a modern controller stinks, so I pulled out my old USB N64 no-name controller. Stick sucks, the variance of the analog range is COMPLETELY off, and no amount of adjustment could fix it. Useless piece of junk. I'd rather use an Xbox controller.
      Bought one of the new Brawler64 NSO controllers. Very nice controller, but there's noticeable lag over Bluetooth. Not sure why. The stick is also nice, but feels different from the original N64 controller. I'm not sure, but I believe this one also has a different variance to its analog range (ie, pushing the stick x% doesn't result in the same x% of an original controller).
      Broke down and bought a BlissBox to use with my original N64 controller. This is an awesome solution, and it's easy to set up! However, my stick is a bit worn out. Still usable, but not ideal, and I feel like the more I use it without breaking it open and addressing the issue, the worse it's going to get. Plus, it requires a cord which isn't ideal with my computer hooked up to the TV.
      So I paid a premium for the NSO N64 controller. No perceptible lag over Bluetooth, feels like a real Nintendo controller, and it's brand new. I wish Nintendo would make more of these things, so that people could still buy them at MSRP!

    It's one of the few libraries where the games are designed around that one special controller.
    The Dpad is almost always ignored and wildly underused vs other systems, and most importantly the analogue stick essentially had that 8 way gate carved into the plastic that many games absolutely rely on.
    Super Mario 64 has noticeably worst controls without those exact gates as they are used to make mario walk/jump in straight lines.

    I stuck around and watched the whole video which is basically a hit piece on Pat. I wanted to give it a chance and I do think you make some decent points but overall I find this very unreasonable. You know, I guess it's fair to criticize the quality of Pat's book (I am happy with mine for what it's worth) or his attitude. But I think some of these criticisms are unfair, such as taking sponsors for a podcast, which is totally normal and not even close to unique to Pat. I also think if you want to get your point across without appearing biased it would be good to not have people dub over these selected and cut quotes from Pat with added emphasis of a whiny fake voice. That doesnt seem like a journalistic analysis. Lastly, the idea that using emulators to play NES games makes the reviews invalid is entirely ridiculous. This is not new technology and the minor differences between NES emulation on a PC and a real cartridge is meaningless in the context of a 1 page review of a game designed to give the reader a sense of the general experience, which is the purpose of a review and not some kind of technical deep dive. Anyway, these are just a few of my thoughts after watching. I've enjoyed some of your other videos and think you can do better.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Critiquing the book quality is really only valid if we take Pat at his word. That being he knowingly shipped a bad product to meet a deadline. If that's true, it's a massive issue no matter how I feel. If that's not the case, then it's not about the book but Pat's actions related other writers. I gave my position on the book in this video at the time of its release, I didn't view it via a critical lens and critiquing it was not my goal here. Everything else shared was just filling in all the arguments. The pros and cons were not my arguments, but others who also purchased the book. The emulation segment was not in regard to the NES, but the N64. Pat owned a full NES set, I wasn't overly concerned about him and the NES. Also, everything was Pat's own voice unless it was written. then it was voices as needed. Many thanks for the comment and for watching.
