The 32X cancelled library seems better than the 32X actual library. I guess the only thing Sega forgot to put on the 32X was a brand new Sonic, a Streets of Rage game of some kind, and maybe a Shining Force or Phantasy Star RPG or both or any RPG for that matter.
Knuckles Choatix was their closest Sonic title. The game had mixed reviews but I loved (and still do) play it. Awesome game play with great music and a good story.
Knuckles Choatix was good, but I think a new Sonic sequel would have been a better move for Sega. Had they released a Sonic 4 exclusively on the 32X as a launch game I think that alone would have sold a lot more units.
@@pauldavis5665 Knuckles Chaotix is certainly better than any Sonic game sega put out since then until Mania, but it was a little half baked. If they would've had more time to finish the levels, and maybe developed a single player mode that didn't use the combi-ring, it would've been fantastic, instead what we got was good but not as good as the 16bit games.
I think your documentaries are a very important part of gaming history that few if any people cover as in depth as you. Keep up the great work my friend, hope you're all well over there in the USA.
As as a youngster? I always heard that Atari Jaguar had a really good version of "Alien Vs. Predator" & I considered buying the system on the strength of that title alone. I would've been HEARTBROKEN to get the First Person Shooter, not the Capcom game, even though the other is very good also!
I'm also really glad I never paid money for the Genesis version of Michael Jackson Moonwalker back then. The arcade was also an awesome beat 'em up! I expected that to be the "Genesis" vesion. The home version was a super lame platformer with nothing going for it! I'm shocked they didn't adapt the Arcade version of the game as best Genesis could do.
This new video is a bit of an experiment. What did you think of the format? Would you prefer a more detailed overview of the games that did see releases on another system compared to what I did here? Let me know.
Looks good. I haven't seen anyone else on TH-cam address unreleased titles on any platform let alone 32X. You went the extra mile and showed screenshots and dev prototypes when possible. Bravo!
The only thing I'd suggest is having a little caption saying what game/version the onscreen footage is from when you're using footage from games other than the one being talked about. That's a minor complaint if anything, though.
As a lifelong Sega fan, this is the most depressing video ever. The mistakes committed by Sega's management around the time of the 32X's release were grievous and numerous to the point of being timeline-altering, all but ensuring the company's eventual demise. I legitimately believe that if things played out differently, Sega would still be a player on the console market today. Makes me wish I had access to a time machine.
As an early adopter of the 32X this video holds a special place in my heart. I remember how many of these were promised in magazines….yet they never came. Rough times! I felt burned by Sega as a supporter. Great video
Of course, because it's re-skinned Sega Racing Classic port (There are leftovers in build info), where SRC is actually re-skinned and emulated Daytona USA with implemented widescreen patch/support or idk, just reworked m2emu widescreen patch
Crazy they released the sega CD version a few months before the 32x release. Were able to have enhanced FMv games of the sega CD instead of MK1 and others.
Alien Trilogy and Aliens vs. Predator would have excellent. That and that X-Men that was never finished. If those had come, I’d still have my 32x/Genesis/Sega CD I had back in high school.
I remember wanting a 32X so bad because the Capcom Alien vs Predator was supposed to be ported. I can't believe they did'nt end up porting it on the Saturn. It would've been arcade perfect.
I wonder if it did not get released because Capcom lost the license to Fox Interactive. Then there's the whole problem of expanding the game for home release so some reviewer in Gamepro or some mag like that didn't complain that the game was too short, too repetitive, and other nonsense like that.
It’s an Easter egg. I thought it looked great on the box + I was wondering how many fellow Star Trek fans were watching this show. 😁 I appreciate the comment.
Holy Cow! That is a ton of games and it's only A - D, wow. I knew the 32X had a lot cancelled but never would have guessed so much. Sega, you truly missed a golden opportunity in the US. I look forward to more of the series though it's also with a bit of sadness as Sega truly shot itself in the foot cancelling everything but the Saturn as the Genesis, CD and 32X all had more life to live.
Very good video. At least it's not the usual "32X. Does it really suck?" or "What the hell was SEGA thinking when they released the 32x?" kind of video.
Ah, well I really love the 32X and what it did for gamers. I think it's almost criminal that support was cut for it so early on. Glad to hear you enjoyed this.
Their is an excellent port of Daytona USA available for the Xbox 360 online in the Xbox live Arcade store. It can also be played on the Xbox1. I've played the Saturn version and have used the AM2 emulator to run the real arcade ROM on a high end pc. In my opinion the Xbox arcade port is as good as its gets short of actually having the real deal quarter eating machine in your living room.
Didn't know they were so many unreleased games for the 32X. Castlevania: Bloodletting and AvP would be the most interesting imo. 32X was ultimately the victim of Sega's bad timing and the imminet release of the Sega Saturn. Nice video.
Is there any documentation around the 32x port of AvP? I ask because Capcom didn't support the Genesis very much, releasing only six games. But the port of Punisher was done not by Capcom themselves, but Sculptured Software, which makes me wonder if they were working on the AvP port as well...
Unfortunately, at this time there isn't. We know what games they had in development for the system (Street Fighter, AVP, and Darkstalkers) and that's about it. It's a real shame because I love AVP, in fact, I played through it with my son last Friday. It's still an amazing game I wish more people could experience.
It is still a super good brawler, but the Punisher port to the Genesis is a bit lacking, so I can't help but wonder if AvP could have fallen victim to the same fate.
Capcom could've actually been releasing near perfect ports of their arcade titles. If anyone could've unlocked the true power of the 32X besides Sega, it would've been Capcom! AVP would've been a crown jewel for the 32X. And I'm almost certain the Street Fighter title in development would've been Super Turbo. Capcom could've righted the wrongs of the Genesis port of vanilla Super. It looked and sounded terrible. I did NOT see nor hear 40 Megs of assets in that release. It felt like a Western developed port (future research for that one!). I was a HUGE Darkstalkers fan and would've bought a 32X just for that one alone.
This was a super interesting video. It's crazy to see how many games were planned with this console before Sega of Japan said "NO, SATURN SUPPORT RIGHT NOW AAAAAAA"
Hey, Jenovi. Nothing I can share here, unfortunately. I've been in the video game industry for 26 years, and Sega Midwest was my second company after Dynamix. There was so much promise there, but so little delivery.
The reason AVP development never moved to another platform was apparently because 20th Century Fox hated the game. There was this Twitter thread by the former Capcom artist Akitomo about how western comics influenced Capcom games and he mentions that Capcom kept asking 20th Century Fox to let them port the game up until 2000, but they kept refusing. He speculated that they didn't like that it was an action beat-em-up instead of a scary horror game. Of course, in 2019, they relented and Capcom put it on the overpriced arcade stick, but I think 20th Century Fox was just doing whatever they wanted at that point before The Mouse swallowed them up. Additional fun fact: Linn Kurosawa was created because they wanted to include Machiko from the comics but only had the rights to characters from the movies.
5:38 I think you actually mean the other Batman Forever game, which was developed by Probe Entertainment. Because according to Wikipedia, GamePro reported that a 32X version of that game was present at E3 1995, but it went unreleased. Also, the unreleased enhanced port of Boogerman makes me think of Earthworm Jim: Special Edition (Sega CD) and Earthworm Jim 2 being ported to the 32X as well, even though nobody managed to make or announce those games for the system.
Would have loved to have seen the 32X Daytona, I did hear rumours Sega were even considering a Master System port of the game :S But most excellent video work, really enjoyed it. The custom box art you created too must have been a real time vampire for you too, Kudos!!!
Thank you Larry! Those boxes did take some time but were totally worth it. I can't imagine a Master System port of Daytona being good, but I've been shocked by the quality pumped out of that system before, so who knows.
Ha! Good eye. It's a little easter egg I put in there for my fellow Trek fans. I actually made all the box art myself as not much exist, and if it does it's very low quality.
Hah! Awesome. Good job! You had me on a hook when I paused the vid to take a closer look. I was thinking maybe the design for a creature in an unreleased game inspired a show runner for Enterprise. Ya'know, cuz there's nothing new under the sun and creative types love to pull from obscure material. You matched the Xindi to the source material well. The creature in the maybe-tech demo and Xindi do look pretty similar
Holy crap...I didn't know there were that many! Thanks for covering this, looking forward to more. So bummed that AVP arcade never got a home port. I remember coming across it on Mame and wondering why I had never played it before given arcade porting was a big thing in that era.
I would have loved for an enhanced version of Dynamite Headdy on the 32x, as well as Boogerman and C2: Judgement Clay. I hope someone dumps C2 online sometime somehow. I always love playing old-school enhanced ports of games, like the Sega CD versions of Earthworm Jim and Mickey Mania.
Wow what a list of games, I remember some of them in the mags, highly disappointed the 32x was dropped. Descent would have been a great one, I looked forward to 32xtreme and a couple others! Good stuff! Oh and Subbed!
This is the most interesting 32x related series I have ever seen. What a shame these games did not get released and that more support was not given to the 32 x by SEGA.
I would say the PS3 and 360 Digital ports of Daytona USA do meet/exceed the quality of the original coin-op since it's a port of that version with some extra content and no compromises and featuring the original graphics and music. Only thing missing would be the Arcade version unique control setup but that's a given.
Yeah, you'll wanna snag a download before it becomes delisted or the services for these legacy consoles is terminated. It's pretty neat, it has a new Karaoke mode where you can just drive freely while the song lyrics are displayed on screen, worth it for that alone.
Something to bear in mind about the Duel demo and Mean Machines is that IIRC their sister magazine, which was the official Sega Magazine, published arcade shots of some games claiming that they were the Saturn or 32x versions (Virtua Racing and Daytona, for example). Mean Machines may have published them too, but I can't remember. Magazines of the time were quite good at either misunderstanding or misrepresenting what they were being shown. Judging from the small, low quality clip available, that Duel demo's animation was extremely impressive for the time. IMO too impressive for building actual game from at the time.
It’s an Easter egg. I though it looked great on the box + I was wondering how many fellow Star Trek fans were watching this show. I appreciate the comment.
Good thing its available in mame still. Oh wait nevermind. Well good thing its available on multicade boards like pandoras box. Oh wait never mind that too. Well that sucks.
Marco Lara it’s an issue for sure. I think the best way for me to show what I'm talking about is by sharing a video with you. It's a must watch and really mirrors how I feel while discussing the fallout from the port missing it’s mark. th-cam.com/video/EEE1QQBrj4I/w-d-xo.html
AMAZING video. I always wondered what games got cancelled when the 32x was prematurely discontinued !!!! Thank you, i was there at thr 32x release day. What a time and even though everyone seems to hate the 32x today everyone was excited for it when it came ouy. I could not afford a saturn or ps1 but i got the 32x instead.
I have a fully working prototype rom on my laptop of castlevania the bloodletting for the 32X, and to be completely honest it's fantastic! but tough as nails 😥 and haven't even try'd to complete it...if it is possible to complete it on the version i have ? lol, also the sound track is incredible!. What a waste of a supurb castlevania title/game and it break's my heart knowing it never had an official release 😭😭😭.
Damn man I had no idea that the 32X had so many cancelled games. I wonder how much money was collectively spent on all of these unfinished projects? Crazy to think about. And I wonder how the stack of cancelled 32X games compares with other systems. I would imagine it to be higher and maybe in line with something like the Dreamcast and the Jag. Nice video, sir! And I loved Zero Tolerance on the Genesis!!
An unreal amount of money. The decision to end the Genesis and 32X wasn't well thought out. It not only hurt Sega, but also every company that had invested their future into these systems. I'm not done with my research just yet, but there are about 3 canceled games for every game that released. More important I believe is the amount of time the system was being supported vs the number of games that released vs what got canned. A system like the Jag was on the market for nearly 3 years yet has close to the same number of games as the 32X.
I like the 32X version of Virtua Racing! I play it on my Vita and for the time that game was surprisingly realistic for how the car handles??? I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it? I got so good at it in a couple hours of playing. I was literally doing flawless laps like I would do in Gran Turismo!? Great video !
Ahhh I didn’t know there were THAT many games planned! Multi episodes to come as well.... damn, I THOUGHT I knew the 32X history. I like the images with the 32X box art.... that Darkstalkers one looks so good. Looking forward to the next one, can’t wait until Virtua(Virtual) Hamster!
The bad news is Virtual Hampster is still 3-4 episodes away. Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the box art, I spent a fair bit of time making those.
I like this new format. Keep the overview but cut it to a few sentences. Then use it for a teaser or a quick intro. That would be cool, and a better way to introduce Retro Impressions. Just a thought. Great video.
There was a spot game for the 32x that was like 85% complete or something, I believe it was released in extremely rare numbers. Any info on it it the rom?
You missed Soul Star the port of the Sega CD game. There is a beta version out there somewhere. This along with a version of FIFA soccer is out there too.
Sorry it's not exactly clear. Anything in a TV Screen is not footage related to the source being discussed. No assets from that game were ever released.
I hate when videos with good music don't credit them in the description. Man, what is the music from 1:54 onward? I heard it recently but I forgot what it was from.
I credit the music at the end of every video. I end up ripping most of it myself so I don't have a track listing or their name most of the time. That song is from Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000. I believe it's near the end game. Any time you're curious about a specific song, just ask.
Cool video 😄 i love the 32x so i am still sad that this system failed and that alot of promosing games were cancelled 😔 i love this video 😄👍 great content 😉🙂👍
The thing with the 32X is it had little to no reason to be. The Saturn, though rushed out, was something that had a very short time before release, and SEGA had flooded the market with their products by then - Mega Drive, SEGA CD, GG, and SMS were _all active!_ and the Saturn was a few months' time away from arrival. Then comes an add-on... for a console that _already had_ an add-on (that gave it better benefits than the 32X itself offered). And then you remember that the Mega Drive had a Virtua Racing port that moped the floor ten thousand times with any 3D game the SNES had, and consider you could use that tech to develop other blazing fast 3D games. What the hell would you want the 32X for, then? Everything that was meant for it, or released on it, should've been left to CD, SVP or Saturn... All these cancelled games tell, however, that there were a lot of devs willing to bet on it. Shame.
About AvP, according to the Japanese side of TH-cam, Capcom were working on a Saturn port that would have been released along side the D&D beat em up ports, but it also got cancelled.
SERIOUSLY?! AVP ARCADE?! CASTLEVANIA?! DARKSTALKERS? Wow...that would have been too awesome. and that cover for BIOSFear looks like a horror game, wild to see the associated screenshots
I owned a 32X, I got it at the end of its life cycle for dirt cheap with Virtua Fighter as a pack in game. I had a few other games such as Star Wars and Doom. In my opinion, Sega should have rode out the 32X another year so more games could have been finished and released. It is NOT a bad system, despite the poor reputation it has. It just has a lackluster library of games. If you can find out on eBay or somewhere for cheap, get it. I wish I still had mine just for the sake of nostaglia.
The Jaguar also had far more announced games than games actually released. Of course the Jaguar, like the Dreamcast, has a very active aftermarket and homebrew community. I've never seen any aftermarket releases for the 32X. Instead of releasing another Genesis/MD Mini, I'd love to see Sega release the Neptune, a planned console that would play all Genesis and 32X cartridge based games. Prototypes and reproductions exist. There have been several aftermarket releases for the Genesis/MD. I have 4 or 5 in my collection.
I wish I lived in a world where The Bloodletting was released. I wonder if there's an old EEPROM with an early build on it in some storage unit somewhere in Japan?
Knowing that AvP could have been on the 32X is like a huge sword to the heart! That would have been a console seller!!

Lol, master system daytona..
Basement Brothers: Have you tried saying "Hello, you" three times in the mirror? I hear that's how you summon him.
Master System Daytona USA? Idk...
Funny enough there is a Master system Sky High OST recreation on TH-cam, It's giving a lot of ideals now.
I’ve been researching Genesis homebrew development, and I hope to tackle the 32X when I get experienced with the Genesis hardware
At 11:30 Is that the real cover art for "Duel"? The lizard man totally looks like a Xindi from Star Trek: Enterprise
Ha!
I’m subbed. Good editing!
Holy crap...I didn't know there were that many! Thanks for covering this, looking forward to more. So bummed that AVP arcade never got a home port. I remember coming across it on Mame and wondering why I had never played it before given arcade porting was a big thing in that era.

Tnx 4 posting video brought to light some titles i did not know existed.
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it.
Nice Sega Genesis Jungle Strike music for the intro!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear when someone enjoys this.
Yes, I enjoyed it. Keep them coming as long as you have material!
Will do.
I would say the PS3 and 360 Digital ports of Daytona USA do meet/exceed the quality of the original coin-op since it's a port of that version with some extra content and no compromises and featuring the original graphics and music. Only thing missing would be the Arcade version unique control setup but that's a given.
I'll have to check that version out. It's unfortunate that it didn't receive a physical release.
Yeah, you'll wanna snag a download before it becomes delisted or the services for these legacy consoles is terminated. It's pretty neat, it has a new Karaoke mode where you can just drive freely while the song lyrics are displayed on screen, worth it for that alone.
You remind me of the energy and personality of retropolis zone and the knack for knowledge like Lairds lair.
consider me a new subscriber.
Thanks! Happy to have you on board.
Great work !!!! Wonderful video
Many thanks for watching.
Why did you use a Xindi from Star Trek Enterprise for DUEL?
It’s an Easter egg. I though it looked great on the box + I was wondering how many fellow Star Trek fans were watching this show. I appreciate the comment.
Jenovi Thanks. Mostly watched TOS and the movies tho. Still have a lot to watch.
Great video! If only we had a port of the AVP Arcade game!
Good thing its available in mame still. Oh wait nevermind. Well good thing its available on multicade boards like pandoras box. Oh wait never mind that too. Well that sucks.
Just found your channel awesome video just subscribed!
Thanks! Glad you found something to stick around for.
Whats the name of the song you used while showing castlevania for 32x?
Good question, I'm not sure. It's from Rondo of Blood on PCE.
Thanks dude!
Daytona on the Saturn was considered lackluster? I don't seem to recall that at the time...
Marco Lara it’s an issue for sure.
I think the best way for me to show what I'm talking about is by sharing a video with you.
It's a must watch and really mirrors how I feel while discussing the fallout from the port missing it’s mark.

Same here!
I have The castelvania 32x prototype rom on my raspberry pi? You can only walk and it just the same scrolling wall
@@adamcayzer2564 can you upload the rom
Thanks for the 32X video.
Great video, would be great to see a fan made 32 x Daytona
Would love to know if someone could make a repro of Aliens vs Predator on the 32x.
Sadly, there isn't much support for the system.
Rex Warden I have it on Mame but wish Capcom would release a digital or physical disc of it.
I didn't realize so many games were left on the table when they killed the 32X, it's unfortunate we don't have more dumps of the prototypes for them.
The list is long. This only covers games A-D
I definitely have to look more into the list! :D
Awesome video would love to see more
Trying to finish the next one for this coming Tuesday. If not, then the following Tuesday.
Wait. Did you use a Xindi-Reptilian from Star Trek: Enterprise for Duel? XD
I don’t know why, but I makes me happy when people notice this.
I enjoyed how the fight was similar to the Kirk/Gorn fight from that one TOS episode
Stellar video. Looks like I'm gonna have to step my game up for my videos! XD You've got yourself another sub. :-)
Thanks bud. You have a strong series with A-Z, keep knocking out those videos.
Thanks! I'm trying to keep it up as best I can. :-D
That black angel game came out but that wasn’t the name of it I can’t remember the name.
That AVP being cancelled is the biggest crime in gaming. Never been put on a home console! It’s SO much fun.
I like this new format. Keep the overview but cut it to a few sentences.
Then use it for a teaser or a quick intro.
That would be cool, and a better way to introduce Retro Impressions. Just a thought. Great video.
Are you talking about the intro segment before I start discussing the games? If so, that's essentially the plan.
Yes that's it. A Retro Impressions trailer would also be cool. You have great editing skills.
There was a spot game for the 32x that was like 85% complete or something, I believe it was released in extremely rare numbers. Any info on it it the rom?
Yeah, I’ll be covering that one in some detail either next episode or the one after.
Duel cover art is an alien species Xindi from Star Trek Enterprise series.
:D It took a while but someone finally noticed this.
Darksider reminds me of Sewer Shark.
Why didnt they put street fighter alpha 2, umk3 on 32x?
But hey, What about Rayman for the 32X, I did say it was coming to it on the poster which it didn’t
Please keep em coming!
You missed Soul Star the port of the Sega CD game. There is a beta version out there somewhere. This along with a version of FIFA soccer is out there too.
8:36 is this unhayoka'd?
Soundtrack list for this vid?
At the end of the video I include a card. I rip most of the songs myself, so there isn’t really a track number or name, just the game I got it from.
That's kinda funny Midwest Studios has a tornado for a logo :D
Where did you get the Aftershock gameplay. Nice video?
Sorry it's not exactly clear. Anything in a TV Screen is not footage related to the source being discussed. No assets from that game were ever released.
I hate when videos with good music don't credit them in the description. Man, what is the music from 1:54 onward? I heard it recently but I forgot what it was from.
I credit the music at the end of every video. I end up ripping most of it myself so I don't have a track listing or their name most of the time. That song is from Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000. I believe it's near the end game. Any time you're curious about a specific song, just ask.
Why does the Duel box art mock up depict a Reptilian Xindi from Star Trek Enterprise?
It's an Easter egg meant for fellow Star Trek fans.
Aliens vs predator would have been a great port
They should at least ported AvP to Sega Saturn.. Huge let down!! At least we got Story of Thor 2!! One of my greatest games of all time!
Man, I'd love to see a 32X homebrew scene pop up. I'm so curious as to what the system was really capable of.
Cool video 😄 i love the 32x so i am still sad that this system failed and that alot of promosing games were cancelled 😔 i love this video 😄👍 great content 😉🙂👍
Thanks Jeroen
I know the biggest problem with the 32X that it was released late in the market in the way of the next-gen consoles.
I had a feeling SEGA at the time tryed everything to see what sticks.
And then you remember that the Mega Drive had a Virtua Racing port that moped the floor ten thousand times with any 3D game the
SNES had, and consider you could use that tech to develop other blazing fast 3D games.
What the hell would you want the 32X for, then?
Everything that was meant for it, or released on it, should've been left to CD, SVP or Saturn...
All these cancelled games tell, however, that there were a lot of devs willing to bet on it. Shame.
Thank you, it was too late to even bring out the 32x when you already have a lot of hardware on the market.
About AvP, according to the Japanese side of TH-cam, Capcom were working on a Saturn port that would have been released along side the D&D beat em up ports, but it also got cancelled.
That would have been incredible.
th-cam.com/video/2vPers_yST8/w-d-xo.html
Have you tried the PS3 port of Daytona? I think it's pretty good.
SERIOUSLY?! AVP ARCADE?! CASTLEVANIA?! DARKSTALKERS? Wow...that would have been too awesome.
and that cover for BIOSFear looks like a horror game, wild to see the associated screenshots
That’s a lot of content making a 32X/Neptune worth having. AvP, Bloodletting and DarkStalkers would’ve been awesome.
Incredible video I luv my 32x
Thanks for stopping by.
