    Another good video as always :) But here's some tidbits of information:
    - Automaniacs was a spiritual successor made by a wholly different team (Visual Dimensions 3D). It was announced during JagFest '97 and then, nothing about it was showcased anymore. Its like it just vanished.
    - I would love to know where B.C. Racers was listed for the Jaguar, as AFAIK, Soulstar was the only game Core Design created for the system, though one of their employees did stated that they had a list of possible games to convert for it.
    That's all and as a sidenote: Damn it! Why we lost Return Fire for the Jaguar CD? :'(

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BC racers question is good. I had a document that listed the games Core was bringing over to the system. I’m fairly well organized when doing these having folders for each game containing all physical documents, along with a complete list of said games with sources sighted for each one. I typically fill that out as I’m writing the script unless I’ve come across a source such as a website, interview or video early on. Anyways, I’ve not a clue what I did with this document. I was a bit shocked to open the folder and have it empty. I’m sure it was misplaced and will turn up in another folder as the series goes on.

    You know, whenever I see Jaguar games in action, my first thought is always that the developers were trying to do too much, with too little hardware. Like, it's clear the devs really weren't quite sure what to do with it, and kept going for gimmicks (like Kombat-style video captured sprites) rather than focusing on gameplay.
    Unfortunately for Atari, that was also my perception in 1994.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lol . This made me laugh as it's true. At this point in gaming history, new hardware needed killer 3D games to back it. Graphics > gameplay for most consumers back then.

    • @thefurthestmanfromhome1148
      @thefurthestmanfromhome1148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jenovi It was the double edged sword situation, developers like Rebellion, Imagitec Design, HMS, ATD etc, all small teams and Atari unwilling to invest big budgets and give big cartridges.
      All working on hardware with terrible development tools, chipsets that needed another 2 hardware revisions etc

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 I am not so sure about the hardware revisions. Like even the newest version of the manual talks more about point-cloud explosion effects than texture mapping. Doom and AvP already took the system beyond what the hardware designers did imagine in their concept (not implementation)(I wonder if a lone dev pressed for the roto-scale capability in the Blitter for R-Type or so). More time in revision => PSX would have come out before. The Doom code looks a bit sluggish at time, but it came out in time. With enough support, 1994 would have been the year of the Jag. 2d games run fluent. Cartridge in 16 bin consoles were not bigger. The Jag can apply advanced compression to the sprites .. or can it? The ObjectProcessor can only process 8 bit sprites. Only the background can be 16 or 24 colors. What is better: A lovely chosen palette or JPEG artifacts in the background and central parts of the (multipart) sprites?
      Atari did provide Video and Audio drivers like on 3do and windows. And then they wondered why this was slower than bare metal coding. The drivers just fit into the internal RAM of Tom and Jerry. So they did not see the need to write tools for code caching.

    Very well presented. I used to own an Atari 400, then 800xl and finished with a 130xe I think Atari lost it's brand recognition back then, they were being ignored by 3rd party developers. There was less than a handful of 3rd party developers, if you owned a BBC, C64, Spectrum even an MSX you had new games weekly. The Tramiel family mismanaged an established brand believing loyalty from consumers would win out over quality, releasing the 5200 and 7800 to compete with Sega and Nintendo was frankly embarrassing. Nintendo had previously approached Atari to be their distributer partner, talk about kicking a gift horse in the teeth! I had a Lynx II, which at the time rivalled Gameboy and gamegear but 3rd party developers realised Atari as a brand sadly died in 1983 crash, realising it was no longer a brand to trust or benefit revenue wise developing for. It is a crying shame that such a brand could end like it did

      The ST was successful in Europe, until Commodore dropped the Amiga 500 price.
      Atari fumbled the Lynx and the Falcon was just a disaster for them, Jaguar was their last hope and they blew it, as they had no real understanding of the console market at that time.

    Apparently there's recently been a claim made that a source - not named) at Beyond Games, suggested Jaguar BattleWheels 2000 was around 50% complete 🤔
    That conflicted with every source i had managed to piece together, which suggested the PC version was the lead version (at least screens of that were shown in the PC press at the time).
    So I reached out to Clark Stacey of Beyond Games, who was kind enough to reply with..
    “To my knowledge BattleWheels never progressed beyond discussion and perhaps a very early prototype on the Jaguar”
    And pointed me in the direction of other sources who might know more.
    So if such a claim was made, it wasn't by Clark.
    Further investigations needed.
    Beyond were a small team, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get a degree of clarification on said claim.
    I'd like to thank Clark for his kindness in replying.

    Always thought it was a shame that developers tried cashing in on current trends of the time with systems like the Jaguar.
    It's a very capable machine when games are tailored to the systems hardware. Would've been a fantastic machine for Sega system16 style racing games for example and is quite a powerful 2d pushing machine with good scaling and rotation, etc. type potential.
    Im not specifically a Jag fan or anything, Im just a gamer and developer who enjoys interesting hardware. It's just one of a few machines I'd like to have seen software for that is tailored to the system rather than attempts of fads from their times that they weren't great at replicating.

I loved the place but understand why Sam was never able to court AAA devs as he just wasn’t focused on that. He thought since the hardware was capable everything would take care of itself. If you had give the Jaguar to Naughty Dog, Konami or Capcom you would have seen great games. As it stands there are at least a couple dozen games that are really good on Jag and I’m happy I still have my launch console with a full library. •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was always a problem of "too little, too late". The STE first specs said something about 640x480x256 out of a 24 bit palette, more FM channels, more memory, ... but "that's too expensive" so they ended up with the STE. Too close to the STFM to be different and feel closer (or superior) to what Commodore had at the moment.
      And the proposed specs for the Jaguar 2 where a BIG leap from the Jaguar.

    • @thefurthestmanfromhome1148
      @thefurthestmanfromhome1148 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ STE was originally annouced as an Amiga Beater, when it arrived, it didn't even match the Amiga abilities, Atari lies about the number of sound channels.
      Atari tech specs were always utter whack, the Pixel animation speed on Jaguar, number of sprites on screen on Panther, always theoretical and completely meaningless

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 the main Atari problem was, like the song, that "bigmouth strikes again". Had Atari keep quiet about the specs until fixed MAYBE it would have fared far better.

  • @loganjorgensen
    @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like cartridges but I think collectively the Jaguar would have been better off as a CD based console. At that time making carts was phasing out as the method and even today homebrew is much easier to make as CDs. The Jag today is stuck largely without more flash carts or more working Jag CD units. Although the Jaguar SD Flash Cartridge should help, check out RetroHQ y'all. ;)
    I would have really liked it if the Jag had a series of flat shaded polygon games, feel like that whole aesthetic never really took off largely because the technology to run it took too long arrive in retail. Idk Correll sounds like an A-hole with no useful input based on records. :(

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Retro HQ is doing amazing work. In all honesty, Atari was actively looking to screw everyone they brought on board to develop games for the system. They tried hard to reject milestones on many projects and void contracts when possible. A crap ton of companies came on board to support the Jag only to be crapped on in the end.

    • @loganjorgensen
      @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Furthest Man From Home That is true, video productions cost money and that factors into price. FMV was probably the most obvious way to spend the larger capacity since typically the game programs themselves were still cart/disk sized for awhile EG. SCD, I think CD tracks used the space well while FMV was simply too big for CDs(8 or more) compared to one DVD.
      Data also evolves in storage format over time too, the 3DO is a good example since mod solutions are more about internal memory to bypass the optical drive rather than fixing it. So even the CD-ROM could be a source of cost savings bitd only to change into an expensive aftermarket repair in the present. Where did the love of physical media go? ^_^

    • @loganjorgensen
      @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Furthest Man From Home Yeah the SCD was one of the earlier adopters of CDs, probably even too early so they couldn't really reap the cost savings of the technology which came much later, nor could I as a user. :\ PS1 is a good example as it came when things were already rolling for CD tech which later still had PS2 games on CD when DVD was a wasteful cost.
      Sega tried a bit with the Sega Classics Arcade Collection on SCD but eventually the 6-Pak cart became cost effective and sold better with the larger user base than SCD had. NA SCD was way too obsessed with FMV as the PC EngineCD used the technology more effectively under 16-bit limits. Homebrew has been different with the SCD being used more as a soundtrack enhancer while voice tracks are still up for potential use. Video productions have gotten cheaper in the digital age but I'm still not seeing any FMV games on applicable retro systems.

    • @loganjorgensen
      @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Furthest Man From Home I was a Model 2 buyer so I probably wasted a little less money heh, but yeah it was a significant investment for myself at my age then. :\ Although PC CD games hadn't yet hit full stride the PC Engine CD was really opening up stuff beyond what could fit on a cart reading magazine articles of games that often never came here lol. I'd say the Amiga CD32 had it worse though, a lot of plain disk to CD ports. :P
      Those titles you mention bring up the other wasted hardware, the scaling and rotation, while the existing examples are very good there was just too few to name. For all the hype surrounding sprite S&R bitd it didn't seem like it was used all that much on SCD or SNES. Thought we'd at least get a Sonic Kart Racer along the way but nope. :\
      Digital Pictures were shysters selling a product that had already failed to arrive, the NEMO, why SOA bought something shelved that long I'll never know. O_o??? Sega's FMV wasn't ready for full frame but instead should have used video sprites IE. smaller portions, but DP only had content based on VHS video so it didn't happen. If you look at Tex Murphy games in 480p, that is how 16-bit video could run faster, look better, and fit more on CD at 240p.
      Hadn't heard that about the Paks, oh yeah the IPs in ROS to remove heh but that GA mistake was avoidable. Yeah I think that had potential too, trilogy compilations on CD. :)

    • @loganjorgensen
      @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Furthest Man From Home Oh yeah the Amiga CD32 had good games for sure but overall it could have been handled better. From what I've seen(It's hen's teeth in Canada heh.) the idea was good but they didn't convert the hardware and software enough to a game console EGs. ease of use, proper conversion, good CD loading, stringent bug squashing possible on a fixed hardware.
      Funny enough there's been a lot of Amiga to Jaguar conversion going on in the homebrew scene probably because the CD32 and Jaguar share a common audience and had similar growing pains. I was a bit skeptical but more on Jaguar is a good thing. :D
      There was Night Striker only in Japan which was a bit chunky showing some hardware limitations for arcade ports. Then again CORE and others did some great coding but it probably came with some extreme optimizations. So I think Super Scaler arcade ports are possible but not without good programming.
