I agree, a new format would have been a better idea but that is not what the BBC wanted. And there is no way they could have scratch built a new program and had it ready to air this spring. It's no surprise that Clarkson and company aren't airing until the Fall because they knew it would take that long.
Steve Johnson BBC's problem from the start is their belief that Top Gear is a self-built brand instead of a Clarkson built brand. They refuse to accept that Clarkson is what made the show and in their arrogance have rushed the show to air. Side note, we could argue that all 3 make the show, but it really is just Clarkson, he sets the tone for the humor and the style Hammond's solo presenting career is based entirely around using a mini-Clarkson style lol. This on the fully unfounded belief that "Top Gear made Clarkson" when we all know that it is truly the opposite. There is no reason the show had to come back in the Spring other than as a passive attempt at saying 'Top Gear is fine with the new presenters'.
I completely agree with you on that. They wanted to push the schedule and keep the same basic format to prove it was greater than Clarkson, Hammond and May and that completely backfired on them. I do think the show has gotten better since the first disastrous episode where the hosts were obviously uncomfortable but it is still miles away from the greatness that was old TG.
It's really not up to the host to do what they want to do. The producers and the BBC to say what they want the host to do. Blaming the host is like blaming a burnt steak for being burned, instead of the chief that left it on the grill to long.
Clarkson delivered his own lines, written in his own style, by himself. That is why they didn't sound fake. He was and is a writer. Anybody else trying to mimic his style will not come off as well, as we can see by the entirely mediocre performance of American and Australian versions of Top Gear which tried and failed to pull off the three men and a quirky relationship trick. I can watch "New" Top Gear as I can watch the American or Australian version or Fifth Gear the other not quite Top Gear program we have in Britain. If your pet dog dies you get another dog. It isn't the same dog, but it's better than not having a dog. But our dog hasn't died. He really has just gone to a farm. Maybe he'll be happy there.
I'd rather watch "Old people sell crap from their attic" than watch new Top Gear too. A good assessment of what is so badly wrong with the new new Top Gear.
exactly raven, the three of them had different likes and dislikes in cars and culture and they wound each up remorselessly, over it. That's what made the Clarkson/Hammond/May show so good. The Evans version tries to copy the old show but fails miserably. It's terrible, I'd rather watch 5th gear.
Matt LeBlanc stated that either Chris Evans had to go, or he would. The fact that Matt LeBlanc was the most well-received of the new hosts and the fact that Chris Evans was being a control freak with too much power as he was on as a producer and hated and annoying all the staff.. causing some to already leave almost immediately, it's a no-brainer that they got rid of Chris Evans.
eight months ago I would have never thought that American top gear would be a better show than bbc top gear. bbc top gear needs to rebuild its transmission.

Could not force myself to even consider watching any other episode than the first of the 23th season of Top Gear UK (AKA Flop Gear) and cheered myself up with the US edition. ...and the first Italian edition too, which, while not comparable to Top Gear UK as it was, was still worlds better than the new Flop Gear.
paul Bailey Top Gear died years ago when the BBC took a part way reasonable motoring show and let a bunch of idiots loose on it. The nadir had to be when Jeremy Clarkson got behind the wheel of a Reliant 3-wheeler and proceeded to turn it on its side several times in the 1st half mile or so! You drive a vehicle within its limitations. If he could have found someone insane enough to loan him a Morgan 3-wheeler, it would have been interesting to see if he could have turned that on its side.
The old show was like a day in my life with my brothers out on an adventure. Just messing about with each other and having tons of fun. The new is unnatural, and seems to want to FORCE enthusiasm on me. Sucks.

You nailed it on this review. Jeremy Clarkson may be an egocentric SOB but it seems like that's what makes him so watchable and provides the perfect foil for Hammond and May. I love all three of them and they're what made the show.
Hell, there's a video of Jeremy trying to put together a DHL Box... It's 3 minutes long, and it's MUCH more entertaining than the first 4 episodes of the New Top Gear combined.
Jay Leno as the guest on the old Top Gear was one of the best guests, because he could talk about all sorts of cars and show genuine interest. He's not funniest guy ever, but he has the ability to bring his own humor onto a show; something Top Gear could really use right now
Leno is the only guy less watchable than Evans. Harris, Seinfeld, and practically anyone from Car or whatever they're calling XCAR these day for the 3rd pick. Lose all the extra hosts. Step 2: Stop having guests painfully read about each other.

I tried watching the first new episode but it's just cringe worthy any propped top gear viewer would agree. jezza fucked up and so did the BBC but jezza landed on his feet .fair play to may and Hammond for sticking by him. can't wait for the grand tour to start
I knew it would be shite, because Top Gear was good because of how Clarkson scripted it, but Clarkson, May and Hammond added their own spark to the show. Top Gear was there show, like it was actually made for them! I watched one episode of new TG and it's like there made to be like the original trio. You have one guy who apparently loves 911's another who calls everyone stupid and the other acts smart, even though James May actually is very smart, not just scripted like that! There trying too hard to be what the viewer's enjoy, but it doesn't work. There was something special that Clarkson, May and Hammond brought to the show, and they carried it over to The Grand Tour. The Grand Tour is still Top Gear, because the original trio are who they are. The only difference is they have a Abbie and no Stig. The chemistry is still as beautiful and special between the original trio, and no one could ever replace that. Even if Jeremy were to wright the script for the new lads at Top Gear, they wouldn't execute it like the original trio, because of all the things that makes Clarkson, Captain Slowly, and Hammond, so entreating. I actually learn a thing about cars because of them and anyone could watch hours of deleted scenes and such for days on. Recently most of us have been watching May may sandwiches from the 70's, and that is still more entertaining then new Top Gear!!
I agree. LeBlanc is alright. I've enjoyed his work. Evans is hard to get used to. His voice is annoying. I like the other hosts. It's a change. It'll take awhile.
He has an amazing Ferrari collection and has been featured on Top Gear multiple times, not really a great host tbh but I think the producers are ruining shit at the moment.
You hit the nail squarely on the head! I never even considered watching the new show since I knew that not matter who they picked it would probably suck. Yes, Clarkson was a colossal pillock and deserved to be fired but, as you so succinctly pointed out these three characters have a comic chemistry that just can't be duplicated... Period!

When you say 'if I went to my work and punched someone I'd expect to be fired', you should know this didn't happen in isolation. Clarkson's mother had recently died of cancer. His wife (and business partner) of 21 years was divorcing him. His previous ex-wife was making difficulties for him. He had just been told a lump on his tongue was possibly cancerous. He was under regular investigation and 'last warnings' from politically correct BBC executives for making jokes that offended a handful of humourless people, his back was hurting, and he had just spent a full day filming outdoors and come back to his hotel to be told the chef had gone home and was offered a cold buffet. A man who, with his team, was the BBC's biggest asset and money spinner. Would a Hollywood star ever be treated like this, especially when they were suffering multiple personal problems?
I think the main problem with Top Gear, new and OLD. Is that, i honestly don't think it ever REALLY worked to start with. There are too many items. Star in a Car. Power Lap. The obligatory challenge sometimes individual, sometimes team usually involving buying a cheap car, painting "a funny word which is funny. Really funny" on the side, or some other fucking hilarious thing, and going "Oh no, its broken down.. Again". The news, sometimes including racism, which isn't limited to just the studio, see Mexican, slope and n-word as controversies. The cool wall. A review crowbarred in somewhere. And on that bombshell... I put this down to. I mean, its great branding. Its travelled everywhere. But its crap. It was never good.
I feel that the BBC needs a Season to iron out the bugs. Just like the first one by Clarkson's Top Gear back in 2002 They had a jumpy overweight guy and some ideas that did not work. Thankfully James May was introduced in Season 2. And how long did it take to get rid of the Cool Wall? Joey, White bald guy and black bald guy appears to work. Sabine can be a "hi" from Germany to give the Stig somebody to worry about.
The problem with the new hosts is that with the last top gear, you were watching folks who had regular upbringings & every episode was a boys' own adventure. Le blanc & Evans are very wealthy with collections of expensive cars so you can't connect with the show anymore
"Old people selling crap from their attic" is _severe_ competition. Don't "mis-underestimate" that aspect. You are right, though, that 2 mill delta is too large a margin.
This is by far the best review I have seen about the new TG. Congratulations. Like you I watched the show for the host's but also the challenges ( I love aquatic cars). So ..just to say as a Brit I think you really nailed it....
Tons of people including me watch old Top Gear reruns on youtube because of the chemistry between Clarkson Hammond and May. I totally agree with this video.
Didn't Clarkson say in a book at a later date that he had been on thin ice with the BBC for a while? I got the idea that it was him on thin ice with the BBC, not necessarily the other way round.
I agree with you 100%. Top Gear simply are/were Clarkson, Hammond and May. However I really do enjoy their challenges and such things, these episodes are among my favorites, but of course mostly because they are challenges betwenn Clarkson, Hammond and May. And as you have said, yes it is mostly scripted, but they sold it. I don't mind being decieved by scripted TV shows, but I want them to at least be convincing.

For myself, I've watched a bit of the new top gear, but I always had the impression of watching a sattire of Mythbusters. Chris Evans reminds me of Adam Savage.
The problem is that because Top Gear is one of the biggest money makers for the BBC, they don't have the luxury of time to let the current hosts work on their chemistry. They need to get it right pretty much straight away or sales are going to fall dramatically. Clarkson, Hammond, and May (who wasn't the original third man) didn't gel perfectly at the start either but then Top Gear wasn't yet the huge hit it would later become. Chris Evans is a good presenter when he is solo, as his style works when he is meant to be the focus of the show. For an ensemble piece though he just grates on both viewer and if reports are to believed, everyone working on the show as well.
I don't have anything against Evans, he was just wrong for the show. Having LeBlanc as the main presenter would have been much better. I thought he was great. Glad I'm an Amazon Prime customer.... : )
Hell, Jeremy's video of him trying to put a box toghether is better than all of the new season combined. Hell, a small video on twitter of Hammond fucking up a golf swing, with Clarkson and May laughing at him, is better.
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment Isaac. The magic of the show has gone and I felt embarrassed for Evans and Leblanc in their inept attempts to emulate the master and his team. I watched the first episode out of curiosity, but started to develop wrinkles on my forehead, as I winced in disbelief and annoyance. Having read much of Clarkson's writings, his skills are immediately apparent and to a high degree, these same inbred skills are portrayed on television. Where Evans or Leblanc's skills are, I know not, but I do know that they are ill equipped to stand in Clarkson's shadow.
Talking about "New" Top Gear is like talking about Kit Car. Essentialy you start with a blank paper & you could do anything you want. You either could make a Copycat of existing example or make your own creation. And i would say that starting with your own creation is probably the best move. Even though it's got lot of downside, people will apreciate it more than pretending to be something that's got a lot of stake & make a crappy work. On that note, it's pretty certain that people involved in "New" Top Gear hadn't grasp that concept
This guy has a point. Even if they hired Seinfeld and Leno as two of the hosts (and let's say Adam Carolla, for the third host), I'd still be deeply disappointed. I mean, let's face it, all the guys I mentioned are legends in their own right and would make a great show on their own, but when you put "Top Gear" as your title, and the original British version no less, then you've really got big shoes to fill, and even those guys wouldn't cut it. I think BBC should've just left it alone and accepted the defeat. BBC was wrong to fire Jeremy Clarkson, and they should take the loss with dignity instead of trying for pathetic patch job attempts.
I was kinda excited to hear that Chris Evans would take over Top Gear, but when I watched the first episode I said "That's not Captain America. Who tf is that knob?"
I do find weird that if "Clarkson is such an asshole" so many people decided to follow him instead of celebrating that he was fired, according to Ben Collins (one of the Stig), Andy Wilman (producer on both Top Gear and Grand Tour), Abbie Eaton (test driver on Grand Tour) and even Silvija Jurin (the Croatian finish line girl in an episode of Grand Tour), Clarkson is actually a gentleman and he rarely treats people that badly as the claims are made, so it makes you wonder. I always thought that was just an excuse for the BBC to kick him out after all the controversies that they made (specially the Argentina fiasco, that is mostly blame of Argentinian morons but that's another topic).
This is the problem. They missed it completely. Should have just asked Evans to get his mates in. The bit with seasick Steve was the best by far. It's not 6 TV presenting professionals
But people were always going to try to compare it to the old version. It has actually grown on me in the last few weeks. It is a different Top Gear....Chris Evans is horrible....but Matt LeBlanc is very good on it....Matt is carrying this show by himself.
The new shpw may well be on Amazon Prime but how many people are going to pay to watch it? I'm certainly not going to pay for Prime even when Amazon offer it to me for a free trial on a regualr basis. I do but things through Amazon but not on a regular basis. I dod buy DVDs and Blu-Rays but I get them from elsewhere that has free postage.
I signed up for Amazon Prime the day they announced the new Clarkson led show. Those three guys, and their chemistry, is what makes the show. They could any sort of show and it would pull an audience. Those three guys took a small time car show on BBC and turned it into a worldwide...phenomenon isn't too strong a word to use. How many people watch car shows in the US? Other than Dr. Who, what is the viewership of BBC America? Answer to both, not many and not much. Top Gear is doomed to fail now no matter who else is sitting in those chairs.
Jezzer, Hamster and captain slow developed over several years. But honestly, they just clicked. It's like trying to recreate the Rolling Stones. Some things just work. Even THEY can't "explain" why. So either have them, or do something totally new. The new crew is more complex. But they still looked as if they only just met each other in episode 5! You can't fake team chemistry - its part lucky accident - part creativity. Unfortunately, this new team just don't have it. What the BBC did felt like a management decision under pressure. Led by an accountant desperate to keep this unique international audience. That crushed out any of the creativity which did make Top Gear popular with Clarkson in it. Fire that accountant BBC and get someone really creative to run TG.
I'd watch a show narrated by Jay Leno. The man has a turbine car... he is a super car geek. He takes loving cars to a level we can only hope to achieve.
What surprised me is that LeBlanc isn't that bad. Sabine is a great driver and with that experience could give some great reviews. She also has a decent sense of humor. Remember when she told Clarkson that she could be his time at the Ring in a van. Find an automotive journalist with a personality and let the 3 of them work together for a while and you might have something. Watching Chris Evans on this show is like sticking your face in a used diaper. Evans brings the whole thing down.
little side note, he didn't punch the guy during working hours like you said would get you fired. He punched him outside of work hours at the hotel. That's like you punching someone who works at the same place as you outside of work, which would not get you fired.
What BBC needed to do is hire production staff that wouldn't cry if they got socked in the face. If rather they would have taken it out back like real men do, the matter would have been resolved and our show would not have been ruined. People these days are pathetic. Everyone moping around talking about how their feelings are being hurt because someone called them a name and shit like that.
I live in a country where "piracy" is the default way of getting stuff (no it's not Russia). As long as it's not child pornography you can get anything for free in a matter of minutes (not even an hour) of its' release and no1 will say sh1t about that. And yet i along with few friends of mine found ourselves spending $99 over an anual subscribtion on a service just for show that hasn't aired yet. Even if those 3 just stood in a field, digging wholes, it would be the funniest whole-diggin' ever...

To be fair, the ratings are more reflective of Antique's Roadshow's consistent excellence rather than Top Gear's plunge in the quality stakes. Not that I like new Top Gear, I just enjoy the little "oh" sound people make when they realise they can auction their great aunt's spoon collection for a fraction less than they expected.

You have one guy who apparently loves 911's another who calls everyone stupid and the other acts smart, even though James May actually is very smart, not just scripted like that! There trying too hard to be what the viewer's enjoy, but it doesn't work. There was something special that Clarkson, May and Hammond brought to the show, and they carried it over to The Grand Tour. The Grand Tour is still Top Gear, because the original trio are who they are. The only difference is they have a Abbie and no Stig. The chemistry is still as beautiful and special between the original trio, and no one could ever replace that. Even if Jeremy were to wright the script for the new lads at Top Gear, they wouldn't execute it like the original trio, because of all the things that makes Clarkson, Captain Slowly, and Hammond, so entreating. I actually learn a thing about cars because of them and anyone could watch hours of deleted scenes and such for days on. Recently most of us have been watching May may sandwiches from the 70's, and that is still more entertaining then new Top Gear!!
In my opinion Matt Le Blanc is doing good, a lot better then Mr Shouty, Chris Evans.

When you say 'if I went to my work and punched someone I'd expect to be fired', you should know this didn't happen in isolation. Clarkson's mother had recently died of cancer. His wife (and business partner) of 21 years was divorcing him. His previous ex-wife was making difficulties for him. He had just been told a lump on his tongue was possibly cancerous. He was under regular investigation and 'last warnings' from politically correct BBC executives for making jokes that offended a handful of humourless people, his back was hurting, and he had just spent a full day filming outdoors and come back to his hotel to be told the chef had gone home and was offered a cold buffet. A man who, with his team, was the BBC's biggest asset and money spinner. Would a Hollywood star ever be treated like this, especially when they were suffering multiple personal problems?

I think the main problem with Top Gear, new and OLD. Is that, i honestly don't think it ever REALLY worked to start with. There are too many items. Star in a Car. Power Lap. The obligatory challenge sometimes individual, sometimes team usually involving buying a cheap car, painting "a funny word which is funny. Really funny" on the side, or some other fucking hilarious thing, and going "Oh no, its broken down.. Again". The news, sometimes including racism, which isn't limited to just the studio, see Mexican, slope and n-word as controversies. The cool wall. A review crowbarred in somewhere. And on that bombshell...
I put this down to. I mean, its great branding. Its travelled everywhere. But its crap. It was never good.

The problem with the new hosts is that with the last top gear, you were watching folks who had regular upbringings & every episode was a boys' own adventure. Le blanc & Evans are very wealthy with collections of expensive cars so you can't connect with the show anymore

The problem is that because Top Gear is one of the biggest money makers for the BBC, they don't have the luxury of time to let the current hosts work on their chemistry. They need to get it right pretty much straight away or sales are going to fall dramatically.
Clarkson, Hammond, and May (who wasn't the original third man) didn't gel perfectly at the start either but then Top Gear wasn't yet the huge hit it would later become.
Chris Evans is a good presenter when he is solo, as his style works when he is meant to be the focus of the show. For an ensemble piece though he just grates on both viewer and if reports are to believed, everyone working on the show as well.
I don't have anything against Evans, he was just wrong for the show. Having LeBlanc as the main presenter would have been much better. I thought he was great.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment Isaac. The magic of the show has gone and I felt embarrassed for Evans and Leblanc in their inept attempts to emulate the master and his team. I watched the first episode out of curiosity, but started to develop wrinkles on my forehead, as I winced in disbelief and annoyance. Having read much of Clarkson's writings, his skills are immediately apparent and to a high degree, these same inbred skills are portrayed on television. Where Evans or Leblanc's skills are, I know not, but I do know that they are ill equipped to stand in Clarkson's shadow.
Talking about "New" Top Gear is like talking about Kit Car. Essentialy you start with a blank paper & you could do anything you want. You either could make a Copycat of existing example or make your own creation.
And i would say that starting with your own creation is probably the best move. Even though it's got lot of downside, people will apreciate it more than pretending to be something that's got a lot of stake & make a crappy work. On that note, it's pretty certain that people involved in "New" Top Gear hadn't grasp that concept

This guy has a point. Even if they hired Seinfeld and Leno as two of the hosts (and let's say Adam Carolla, for the third host), I'd still be deeply disappointed. I mean, let's face it, all the guys I mentioned are legends in their own right and would make a great show on their own, but when you put "Top Gear" as your title, and the original British version no less, then you've really got big shoes to fill, and even those guys wouldn't cut it. I think BBC should've just left it alone and accepted the defeat. BBC was wrong to fire Jeremy Clarkson, and they should take the loss with dignity instead of trying for pathetic patch job attempts.

I do find weird that if "Clarkson is such an asshole" so many people decided to follow him instead of celebrating that he was fired, according to Ben Collins (one of the Stig), Andy Wilman (producer on both Top Gear and Grand Tour), Abbie Eaton (test driver on Grand Tour) and even Silvija Jurin (the Croatian finish line girl in an episode of Grand Tour), Clarkson is actually a gentleman and he rarely treats people that badly as the claims are made, so it makes you wonder. I always thought that was just an excuse for the BBC to kick him out after all the controversies that they made (specially the Argentina fiasco, that is mostly blame of Argentinian morons but that's another topic).

I'd liked your summary of the Antiques Roadshow.
I would watch anything by either of those 3, like James May's man's Lab or Richard Hammonds invisible worlds or Clarkson's Farm.
But people were always going to try to compare it to the old version. It has actually grown on me in the last few weeks. It is a different Top Gear....Chris Evans is horrible....but Matt LeBlanc is very good on it....Matt is carrying this show by himself.

The new shpw may well be on Amazon Prime but how many people are going to pay to watch it? I'm certainly not going to pay for Prime even when Amazon offer it to me for a free trial on a regualr basis.
I do but things through Amazon but not on a regular basis. I dod buy DVDs and Blu-Rays but I get them from elsewhere that has free postage.

I signed up for Amazon Prime the day they announced the new Clarkson led show. Those three guys, and their chemistry, is what makes the show. They could any sort of show and it would pull an audience. Those three guys took a small time car show on BBC and turned it into a worldwide...phenomenon isn't too strong a word to use. How many people watch car shows in the US? Other than Dr. Who, what is the viewership of BBC America? Answer to both, not many and not much. Top Gear is doomed to fail now no matter who else is sitting in those chairs.
Jezzer, Hamster and captain slow developed over several years. But honestly, they just clicked. It's like trying to recreate the Rolling Stones.
Some things just work. Even THEY can't "explain" why. So either have them, or do something totally new. The new crew is more complex. But they still looked as if they only just met each other in episode 5! You can't fake team chemistry - its part lucky accident - part creativity. Unfortunately, this new team just don't have it.
What the BBC did felt like a management decision under pressure. Led by an accountant desperate to keep this unique international audience. That crushed out any of the creativity which did make Top Gear popular with Clarkson in it. Fire that accountant BBC and get someone really creative to run TG.
And on that bombshell...

What surprised me is that LeBlanc isn't that bad. Sabine is a great driver and with that experience could give some great reviews. She also has a decent sense of humor. Remember when she told Clarkson that she could be his time at the Ring in a van. Find an automotive journalist with a personality and let the 3 of them work together for a while and you might have something. Watching Chris Evans on this show is like sticking your face in a used diaper. Evans brings the whole thing down.
little side note, he didn't punch the guy during working hours like you said would get you fired. He punched him outside of work hours at the hotel. That's like you punching someone who works at the same place as you outside of work, which would not get you fired.
What BBC needed to do is hire production staff that wouldn't cry if they got socked in the face. If rather they would have taken it out back like real men do, the matter would have been resolved and our show would not have been ruined. People these days are pathetic. Everyone moping around talking about how their feelings are being hurt because someone called them a name and shit like that.
I live in a country where "piracy" is the default way of getting stuff (no it's not Russia). As long as it's not child pornography you can get anything for free in a matter of minutes (not even an hour) of its' release and no1 will say sh1t about that. And yet i along with few friends of mine found ourselves spending $99 over an anual subscribtion on a service just for show that hasn't aired yet. Even if those 3 just stood in a field, digging wholes, it would be the funniest whole-diggin' ever...
How did anyone think that Chris Evans was going to work? Wasn't it obvious in the audition? If they couldn't beg the originals to come back, then the main host should have been Chris Harris right from day one.

To be fair, the ratings are more reflective of Antique's Roadshow's consistent excellence rather than Top Gear's plunge in the quality stakes. Not that I like new Top Gear, I just enjoy the little "oh" sound people make when they realise they can auction their great aunt's spoon collection for a fraction less than they expected.
