    It doesn’t matter whether it’s Intel or AMD. There is a major issue with power draw and unplugged performance with x86 processors. I personally think it’s an area not enough people pay attention to, so I’m really glad to see that you guys are!!

    • @cryshot8071
      @cryshot8071 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Could not agree more. The ARM-Architecture will always be more power efficient because of how it works compared to x86. ARM is the future, x86 will soon be dead. There are even companies like amazon who are testing the very first ARM processors specifically for servers.
      And did you know, even x86 processors contain commands from the Reduced Instruction Set? One could say modern x86 processers are x86/ARM hybrids.

    • @SilentEire
      @SilentEire ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cryshot8071 is that the architecture in the new Alder Lake chips? Is that why it uses Big/little cores?

    • @cryshot8071
      @cryshot8071 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@SilentEire Partly. Each CPU has an instruction set which is basically a range of commands the processor is able to execute. For simplification, imagine it as adding, subtracting, dividing and so on. x86 processors have a large instruction set compared to ARM processors. They are able to execute a lot of different commands. But that comes at the cost of scalability. ARM processors on the other hand have a so called Reduced Instruction Set (Google RISC) and thus have fewer commands they can actually perform. For example, an arm processor would need more cycles to perform the same operation whereas an x86 processor would need only one processor cycle. It may sound like a disadvantage, but because the number of commands are fewer on arm, operations can be scaled to more cores efficiently. And what many people don’t know: power draw rises exponentially with clock speed. Performance however does not. So from an efficiency point of view it makes more sense to put more cores in a processor that run at slower clock speeds than using less cores at faster clock speeds. But as I said, operations cannot be split to multiple cores as easily on x86 as on ARM.
      I wrote this 5 min before going to bed so I might not get all the details right, but I think the point should be clear.

      @vanCaldenborgh ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cryshot8071 Absolutely right. I think, also in the branche prediction pipelines, where different possible software paths are pre-computed and all but the right one get "flushed" after, the "broad" x86/x64 instruction set can be a serious disadvantage. Also, when you would go for a new "broad" instruction set in 2022, you probably would choose a totally other set of commands, needed by modern applications, then the disadvantage in most cases would maybe not be there anymore and in some even much much better. But I would be curious to see how fast an intel x86/64 SoC would be, with all the short paths and hardware decoding and controller chips nearby.

    It seemed to be a good device, at least in terms of specifications it was, but when using it for daily tasks such as office or web browsing, the device overheated to the point that it restarted on its own.
    Dell technical support sent me a replacement computer, but the result was the same, the computer overheated and had to be restarted, and I assume it was for safety. After 10 months, they gave me my money back, although it was a headache to achieve.
    From my experience I can say that in small computers a good cooling system is needed, and given my situation I would not buy a computer with an Intel processor of 13" or less, at least not a Dell.

Intel or AMD really need to get hard at work to compete with Apple silicon because as an average person the only reason to get a windows laptop rn even the good ones is because of a software requirement if you have one. There are hardware reasons to also get a windows laptops. For instance Apple has no RT hardware making them awful for 3D rendering and pretty much unplayable in any game that could have RT enabled. Intel is the one who really needs to change the most while AMD is doing great while offering lower power consumption. Another reason is that you are not bound to apple solely for your devices so if you don't like one windows maker you have many others to chose from. Windows laptops are also far easier to repair making parts easier to upgrade or repair. Also installing Linux is also far easier on a windows laptop if you don't like windows. Plus you can easily dual boot between the two. Apple with their M1 processors don't officially support dual booting and the linux distro that does exist for it is very bare bones and is missing tons performance due to the lack of drivers

    What makes the macs memory perform better is not because of the unified memory but the "much" higher memory bandwith. The M2's memory runs at over 100GB/s while the latest samsung DDR5 memory on PC only runs at 38.4GB/s so it's got nearly 3X faster bandwith.

    • @ahaimes6320
      @ahaimes6320 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, the unified memory is referring to sharing between ML, CPU and GPU. Apple has upgraded the bandwidth on the M2 by over 50% meaning that bottleneck is eased, and a good reason why you should buy the M2 over the M1 as long as you get the 16GB model.

    • @kylebelle246
      @kylebelle246 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say for sure but i really believe the reason its that much faster is because it is unified (well by unified i mean on the same chip as the components that will be accessing it cpu,gpu etc..). Dimm slots will never be as fast i feel

    • @hishnash
      @hishnash ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a few factors:
      1) the Unified memory does play a part; The reason Is on intel iGPU systems a portion of system memory is revered for GPU only and the GPU itself cant read/write to data in other regions of the CPU so when an application needs to provide data to the GPU (like images/video on a web page or photoshop image) it needs to copy that data to the reserved region but most apps need to keep this data also accessible to the cpu so they end up with 2 copies of the data!! On M1/2 systems the GPU and CPU can point at the exact same position in memory so the data does not need to be copied.. this in the end means there is less memory pressure on the system,. Furhtmore unlike the intel platform the GPU does not reserver any fixed region of memory so if need be the cpu can use up the entier system memory, on the intel system there will be typical 2 to 4 GB permnatly reserved for the GPU that the cpu cant use even if the gpu only needs a few MB of that (it is very difficult and costly to resize this reserved section so it is basically static).
      2) memory compression. Apple memory controllers have a more advanced version of memory compression (in particular for the formats of data being provided to the gpu). Memory compression can really make a massive difference.
      3) macOS better swap management than windows, Due to the SSD controller being on the SOC the latency to issue a quite page read needed when the cpu falts due to reading data that has been swapped to disk is much less than on the intel system were the SSD controller is remote over PCIe. That latency hit really adds up as in cpu time its like waiting years for data to arrive.

    • @fidelisitor8953
      @fidelisitor8953 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylebelle246 Sure, unified memory plays a part, but I think having the memory directly beside the SoC may play an even bigger part. I say this because it reduces the amount of time it takes to read/write to the ram (latency) due to the shorter distance. Couple that up with a high bandwith and you've got yourself a super-fast memory.

      To be fair this isn't a base model M2 MBP but still the fact that a machine with a 6 year old laptop design and the oddball of the MacBook lineup can knock the pants off the competition (and at a cheaper price too!) shows you just how good Apple has gotten and just how bad Windows machines have become at the same time. Especially with Intel. I recently had a horrible experience with a Windows gaming laptop and while technically it had *way* more graphics power than my 16" M1 Pro MBP it literally didn't last a year due to QC problems. Apple has just been hitting it out of the park since these Apple Silicon machines came out and there are reasons why these laptops are selling like hotcakes. Sure you pay a little more, but they're the best thing since sliced bread when you consider the overall value of owning one. The only reason to own a Windows machine these days is that you *HAVE* to own one for specific applications or gaming. Otherwise you will do better with a MacBook.

To properly show difference you should use impementation on the same language with the same logic but written to allow use of multiple core in one implementation and single-core in the other implementation. Doing it your way would be confusing as probably single core c++ still outperformed python3 multicore performance by a mile. Also for most people opening 150 chrome tabs and switching between them is far more 'real performance' than running algorithms in different programming languages.

    As I said in previous videos, the M2 is a beast but to get to beast mode you need 16GB of RAM, and this is just common sense as RAM is the bottleneck when you are doing pro work. So for those that said the M2 was a fail, then if it is, then the XPS 13 Plus is a disaster and purely best bought to look pretty.
    I expected the M2 to kill the XPS in real world tests but am shocked how far it dominates and it shows that Apple has done a great update with the M2 bearing in mind the Intel marketing spiel claiming they are the best (as usual benchmarks only tell a small part of the story).
    Not that many people will buy the MB Pro 13 M2 due to its old design and that once upgraded it closes in on the M1 MB Pro 14, but if you do and you care about performance on the road, then this is the best ultrabook in the world and is why it was the second best selling laptop of 2021 (16GB model obviously).

    The dell sure looks better ! Kudos to the design teams
    Though, I’d like to start a little ux conversation here. I’m afraid the Apple curse has switched sides: Dell design engineers took over ux engineers…
    - no visible trackpad boundaries, trust me this will get annoying (this and windows combined, welcome to drag and drop hell)
    - clunky capacitive buttons that look neat but don’t bring anything useful
    Those are two major mistakes, in my opinion, on the most important pieces of a laptop: trackpad and keyboard… A laptop will be as good as you can use it. Fix those two issues, the XPS becomes the top 1 windows laptop !
    In general, I think Windows laptop manufacturers are great at engineering design masterpieces, but in terms of actually using the thing and getting work done, Apple is still king with a 2016 design, and that deserves credit too imo
    TLDR: work on those two side by side, you’ll look cool on the XPS, you’ll be more productive on the MacBook

      @@lou7319 good question !
      1. You can’t beat regular button, ask a software developer if they prefer capacitive buttons or actual switches, they will obviously say actual switches. Maybe no one complained yet, but it’s not because no one complained that it’s not worse, and power users aren’t the target audience anyways… I’m just saying it’s sad this is a lifestyle laptop, because it could have so much potential as a light cool workstation
      2. On my own computers, feeling the edge of the trackpad is very nice when you run out of space. If you don’t know where it ends, dragging anything on the screen more than a few inches will make you go off the touch surface and you’ll end up putting stuff in the wrong spot. As I said, in my opinion cool for lifestyle and such, but not for productivity
      I guess I am not the target audience either
