it's so weird watching this after the release of Half Life Alyx, to think this is what we thought about valve not releasing games was a dark age for us as gamers...
Honestly, if there is any spec of chance left for HL3 being made, I think Valve should just release it on Steam with no teasers, no trailers, and no hype. The overwhelming expectation for this game is so huge that the marketing could possibly contribute to its downfall if it doesn't turn out to be "groundbreaking." ThisGuysAMook idk why people dont realise that HL3 isn't possible. The reason(s) why it isnt possible is because the main character is dead. In HL2 the black guy (i cant remember his name) died. Through out the HL series it was obvious he was the main character, not Gordon. I mean, they could have some plot twist for HL3 but idk how they would do it. Im just waiting for a new Valve game that isnt a shit f2p card game that becomes p2w after a few months or a shitty dota3. Tf2 just cant have a continuation tbh because it just wouldnt work. But if they did make another CS game that could work, but the economy would never match CS:GO's economy. Portal cant have a continuation either which sucks. I just wish valve would release something new and original.

Raycevick's video certainly had me thinking about Valve again. I think it says a lot that I haven't thought much in detail about the company in years. Your video, however, brought the nostalgia, and that's arguably harder to deal with.
That, I think, is the saddest thing. In my mind they've gone from a company that I used to be very aware of, to one I just kind of ignore as the entity that keeps Steam going. If they announce a game, everyone will probably lose their shit, so I don't even need to stay up to date with Valve news
It pisses me off that Jake said they retired. Not because it was wrong for him to say that, or it was wrong period, but because it's true. Valve discovered a money pit and got lazy and that's their "retirement." Despite the fact that they have an almost entirely different staff than they did 10 years ago, none of this new staff have even had a chance to put their skills to work on anything worth while other than Dota or new CS:GO maps or whatever. Valve must be the easiest company in the world to work for in game development.
It's actually far worse when you consider Portal, Left 4 Dead, and DOTA were all made by other studio's that Valve just bought an published their games. The only real game Valve made themselves, and still update is Team Fortress 2. They have not even touched the Half Life series since episode 2. In other words the Orange Box was like the end of Valves real game making then they just bought other people, and focused on Steam.
Actually, your camp counselor analogy really hit home with me. When I was a kid, I spent the whole year looking forward to going to Boy Scout Summer Camp, and what kept me coming back was how the staff helped all of us and did their absolute best to make our week-long stay as much fun as possible. As I grew older, so did all the counselors who gave me these great memories, and they started moving into the real world. Person after person I looked up to started leaving, and it saddened me to think about how I'd never hear the same scraggly bunch of teenagers and college students get on a small stage and sing about their mustaches, me and my friends laughing our 12 year old asses off because "lol, girls can't have mustaches," the guy who taught me how to properly shoot a bow would never be there to congratulate me for getting an arrow on target again, that eventually everyone who made this place special would eventually leave because no one can work for $75 a week forever. Much like how great game studios inspire the next generation of game designers, the counselors who made my life better inspired me to join camp staff, and even as I watch the last of the men and women who continue to inspire me leave, I think back to the first time I got a bullseye, getting lost in the woods after being told "hey go that way," watching the gathered staff sing bittersweet camp songs through teary eyes, I cry a little, much like when I remember those long nights tucked away in a little "cave" in my best friend's closet playing Battlefront 2, watching my older cousin play mechquest on our grandparent's dinky windows 95 pc, or my morbid curiosity of this new game my friend had just bought called mortal combat Booyah
@@bolouxshetnfouk2741 you don't have to buy the Index to play hl:a, it just offers the ultimate experience. There are like VR headsets for less than $200 which offer a just fine experience. That like saying I have to spend 2000 bucks just to play a video game because i want to run it on 300 fps on ultra settings at all times
I remember when steam first came out. It was clunky and unresponsive. Back then I was like why do I need a separate software to play my games and login. The login took forever and didn’t work half the times. I would have never thought that physical media dies out and steam would become the main platform. Back then absolutely no one would have thought that. Crazy.
Yes you name it.. It was never sure that Valve would succeed. Just like with Netflix who took over Blockbuster and so on. Same will happen to Valve one day.
I was about to recall the same moment ! Beeing early in new business models is one of the key for greatness ! But gosh, i miss Sierra, Rare, and every time i replay Portal 2, I cry for knowing I will never play a third...
What's funny is Valve was dying even before Dota 2, because that game was nothing more than a remake of an existing mod on Warcraft 3. And the Warcraft 3 version at the time had more heroes/content, so Valve just made things look better and cut 20% of the heroes so they could add them in later. The last new IP they made was Left 4 Dead in 2008. Good video, boyo. Boohyah
Raphaël Paradis not so sure about source but cs started as a mod for the original half life, and then steam was created to curate joining and hosting servers and to sell copies of cs when it was made into its own game.
And sadly, Valve also doesn't care about Left 4 Dead 2 either, because it doesn't have a skin economy that they can make money off of. As a result, the game feels frozen in time as well, the only "updates" it gets are in the form of community mods, which thankfully the PC community is always making really cool new mods for the game. But, it's just sad to see the old "blog posts" from like 2012 that are still "featured" on the front page, like they've just left the game alone to die on it's own as time goes on in favor of milking CS:GO and Dota for all they're worth... It just reminds me that Valve will likely never dive back into the L4D universe for updates or sequels... Which is sad, since Left 4 Dead 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.
i'll give you one more booyah this time but that's it no third one get it valve can't count to 3 funny gamer joke can we get some i'm going to die in the chat
Being a Valve fan now is like... You married your high school crush. Things were amazing. You got that job you really wanted. Life was great. But one day you woke up and things had changed. Things were colder. More distant. You hardly talk anymore. There are a lot of tense dinners. When you try to strike up a conversation, you get one-word answers or "when I have something to say, I'll tell you." Is it just them who's changed? Or have you changed as well? Even if they opened up again, can things be like the used to? Can you really go home again? What happened to us, Valve? What happened to us? To the people we were meant to be?
The Portal background music gave me sudden and unexpected nostalgia, I'm gonna be broken all day. But on a different note, I agree with what you're saying. Valve has been a success story that I've looked up to for years, and while the prospect of new games that will stay close to my heart is slim-to-none, I still respect them and what they've built. Maybe one day we'll have another good one, but I doubt it.
Valve is like that sister/brother who always got an A+ on his tests at school and was the shining light of the family untill he started doing heavy drugs and going into depression and shit... its just sad, what have you become valve. 😢
theagemon Valve does what their community wants. CS was a mediocre competive game, until skins came around and propelled it to where it is. Pretty much nobody cares about TF2 or CSGO as games, only the e-peen they've accrued. Card games are a new dimension of gaming since you can customize your deck, 50 million players in hearthstone. Valve thought we wanted it and some of them wanted to make it. The sad truth is they'll never release anything until it's perfect, and HL3 has floundered in dev hell for 10 years. probably waiting for VR due to all the HLVR files coming out in leaks. Finally, valve said they'll make games again. They spent the past few years working on hardware, evidently, and can do that if they need to now. Valve is a company that uses games as tools for innovation.
Here's what makes me believe Valve is still making games: VR. Valve decided to develop VR which was a huge risk and they must have known from the start that it wasn't going to be very profitable compared to Steam. They had absolutely no reason to develop VR but they still did.
Portal will always be one of my all time favourite franchises and series. Beautiful, funny and genuinely unsettling at times. Left4Dead is a cult classic within my friend group.
War. War never changes. In the year 1945, my great-great grandfather, serving in the army, wondered when he'd get to go home to his wife and the son he'd never seen. He got his wish when the US ended World War II by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The World awaited Armageddon; instead, something miraculous happened. We began to use atomic energy not as a weapon, but as a nearly limitless source of power. People enjoyed luxuries once thought the realm of science fiction. Domestic robots, fusion-powered cars, portable computers. But then, in the 21st century, people awoke from the American dream. Years of consumption lead to shortages of every major resource. The entire world unraveled. Peace became a distant memory. It is now the year 2077. We stand on the brink of total war, and I am afraid. For myself, for my wife, for my infant son - because if my time in the army taught me one thing: it's that war, war never changes.
War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters, known as vaults. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them - all except those in Vault 101. For on that fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Vault 101 slid closed... and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die. Because, in Vault 101: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves.

i've been watching videos about HL and Valve for the past three days (every once in a while nostalgia kicks in), never thought about how much i wanted/needed you to make one, but as always you made a great video, grounded, relatable and fun
Valve could literally buy every AAA company and still have enough money to buy 3 out of 6 continents I love steam, but i want new valve games... Like a game with the number 3...possibly(?)
I think what I miss most these days are those games that really (and I mean REALLY) take you to a different reality. This video focused on valve but let me just throw in Halo too since that seems like a nice freebee. Aside from books, nothing has ever grown with me as a person as much as Halo and the valve games. I miss those moments where you see something in a game that really takes you back. Not to last night when you beat the first half of the series in 6 hours, but to a time perhaps 2 or 3 years old. When I got halo 2 with my dad and I saw the cut scene where the first halo ring blows up as a flashback, I really felt the passage of time in my own life. Waiting 3 years for halo 2 was AMAZING despite what you may think if you look back. Games that really stuck to their stories and provided dependable and emotional connections across real and significant amounts of time in REAL LIFE. I feel like this nuance has been lost somewhere. These days the only game that comes to mind that embodies this feeling I'm describing is Kingdom Hearts III. Fans have been waiting years in real time for a great story to continue. Assuming you haven't been locked in a basement replaying the old games over and over, any references and callbacks, any plot elements from other games are gonna have HUGE emotional impact and satisfying results. Why? Because the games' story has been artfully crafted for YEARS. Every time I look up new games all I see are one and done indie titles. This isn't bad but I just want someone to release a game with the same passion and potential for years of development as the days long gone. Not with plans for DLC but with plans for true character and world building. For true lore expansion. I wan't to get lost again. I want to leave Cortana on high charity and get the chance to save her two years later in real time AGAIN. And I want to actually care again.
Aprox I feel the same about dark souls it's been about 6 years since I first played dark souls (4 since dark souls 2) and all the lore and deep seeded hints in the game hit me with a wave of relief in and almost tears when dark souls 3 came out. Seeing all those old places be revived and connected to the new ones along with old NPCs. That's an experience a lot of kids today might never feel
Aprox it's not really the games' fault it's just a change of your expectations. If you expect every movie to be exactly like citizen Kane of course you'll be disappointed. You were younger when you played those games, so it was much easier to be immersed in them. You have a huge foggy set of nostalgia goggles on that are blocking you from seeing what's really going on. We've never had a better time for video games. Everyone has everything available to them
Epic isn't competition, Making games exclusive to their store to try and get people to get on your predatory game market, of which user reviews are an optional thing that cunty devs can use to their advantage, and it functioning slightly worse than steam, makes Epic, More of a nuisance, than competition
@@rena8215 I mean its not as though steam reviews are accurate or secure. Just look at rocket league. Nothing has changed yet reviews are filled with conspiracy theory's that will likely kill the game. User reviews is a flawed system easily abused by a couple hundred people and its totally understandable that developers that spend years working on a game dont want it all to go down the shitter because a couple hundred irrational people exist.
@@TheBUGZNTA User reviews are the most trustworthy reviews you will ever see, I understand perfectly what happened to rocket league and I couldn't give less shits, they deserve it, plus, steam is already working to fight review bombs

all they really need to make a 10/10 l4d3 is new well designed maps, fix the technical issues the previous games have and step up the graphics an increment. the core formula is still excellent. re-working vs such as adding a little more depth to special infected control would also be great.

Yeah. I'm ok with Valve making a shitload of money, it's the reason companies exist in the first place. But I also wish I could remind them that with the incredible amount of money they're making they could become the equivalent of the Catholic Church during the Renaissance. Look back to what Valve has done best outside of Half-Life and Steam - turning successful mods or interesting ideas into fully fledged games that are, as Jakey put it, instant classics. Portal/2, TF2, the L4D games, Counterstrike...these are all mods or student ideas originally, or come from mod teams turned studios. Please Gaben, flip some of that money around and start making games that no other company would dare to make, esp. public companies beholden to shareholders and earnings reports. That's one of the upsides of having a private company, so take advantage! Please. The AAA industry needs a shot in the arm, and Valve has consistently been the company to look towards for innovative ideas. I'm sure they're working on all sorts of stuff behind the scenes, and obviously it's not so easy as writing a check to produce a genre defining game. We'll see what 2019 brings, and beyond... I still have a lot of hope and respect for Valve but it seems to me that the public is cooling on them recently. I guess I can take solace in the fact that if I'm thinking this at home, someone at Valve who is much smarter than I am has probably thought of it too. Good luck random Valve employee!
I honestly feel that it's exactly that sort of reasoning that has them sitting on the sidelines. They found themselves with all the money ever and the ability to control the world they came out of. They went on vacation. I love that. They weren't driven by the ego or the 'bigger dick theory' and as one or the other has been drawn to new ideas or projects they have gone. I've always respected people who work hard, achieve unexpected rewards and then just move on.
Well if they were to, lets say, make half life 3 with all the hype that would go around it people would expect a perfect game to finish the series. But it would take years to make a perfect new innovative game that would be different than all other games out. And if it wasnt good enough people would probably shit on steam because this is something they have waited their entire life for so if theres something wrong about it itll probably make them mad
I saw this video the day it came out, in my sophomore year of school. Amazing content, have all of your songs on my Spotify, your TH-cam is honestly the most nostalgic for me, was such a rough time in my life (still is but that’s life haha) thank you Jakey, hope you’re back soon
There's a great interview with Steve Jobs regarding tech companies going under because sales & marketing become more prevalent under no new products. Basically, unless valve is making new titles, the people who get promotions are sales & marketing since they're the ones increasing revenue. Suddenly, sales & marketing people are the ones who look at trends and say "that'll sell" without any care for their consumer and just seeking to make the company more profitable. Steve Jobs mentioned this with Xerox, but it holds true with ANY tech company too. Gabe still owns over half of valve tho. . so it's not all bad. He just hasn't seemed like he's interested in making a game for a while and has probably been knee deep in card games bored off his gloriously bearded face. If you're a game developer and play a game long enough, you start raging that the game you're playing isn't tailor made to your ideal image. Thus, Gabe spoke, "Let there be Artifact."
The fact that Gabe owns over half of valve is what makes it bad. As its perfectly legal for him to loot the company coffers, whereas most CEOs would goto jail for such a thing. If you have the option to invest 100 million in a new game or deposit the money directly to your personal bank account... probably a lot more tempting to go with the latter. Never understood the love for Gabe, he pioneered DRM and lootboxes and now just sits back leeching hundreds of millions in revenue off hard working game developers that actually create shit. Of all the greedy slime balls in the gaming industry, hes honestly probably the worst offender.... but for some reason people love him. IMO Gabe selling the company is probably the best thing that could happen to valve.
This art just popped in my recommended, amazing analyzis how Valve has changed through the years, earned my subscribe and like! EDIT: So valve is planning to release several new game titles, good for them.

Valve has changed. It's no longer about making games, anticipated sequels, or adopting IPs from modders. It's an endless series of 75% off sales, fought by 3rd party developers and microtransactions. Valve--and it's consumption of TF2 hat money--has become a well-oiled steam machine. Valve has changed.
More like a well oiled steam train. The money was the fuel for the fires of greed that allowed them to open the throttle valve and keep the money train driven by steam chugging along.
Valve has changed. It's no longer about gameplay, storytelling, or fun. It's an endless series of transactions, made by gamers and gamblers. Valve--and it's consumption of games--has become a well-oiled machine. Valve has changed. ID-tagged skins carry ID-tagged prices, use ID-tagged programming. Numbers inside their source code enhance and regulate their abilities. Development control, information control, emotion control, money control…everything is monitored and kept under control. Valve…has changed. The age of gameplay has become the age of money, all in the name of averting catastrophe from actually getting your ass off the sofa and going to the store to buy a game, and he who controls the industry, controls history. Valve…has changed. When the digital media is under total control, Valve becomes routine.
Afonso Markmann Well excuse me but I don't really mind the "Get your ass out of the couch" part specially when I get good offers when I'm not doing it. Say whatever you want about Valve but you can't deny Steam was a good thing for both consumers and developers
Chill out, it was just a joke like people always do with "x has changed" and MGS4. I also enjoy buying games from Steam, and it kicks ass that I can sell my CS:GO skins. I got many games from Steam just by doing that, and I think it's awesome.
ikagura MEME? Memes. Memes has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of dank memes created by no lifes and weebs. Memes - and its consumption of dank- has become a well-danked web. Memes have changed. Watermark memes have watermark names, use watermark trademarks. Nanomemes inside their bodies enhance and regulate their dankness. Gender control. Racist control. Moral control. Internet control. All memes are monitored and kept under control. Memes have changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control...All in the name of averting catastrophe from memes of mass dankness. And he who controls the memes...controls history. Memes have changed. When the memes are under total control...dank memes becomes routine
But that's a wrong comparison to make, since WoW is a continuation from WC3 in terms of story and such, and is essentially WC4. Blizzard were able to make the story continue, and still make money off of it. Valve gave up on the story entirely and just decided to make money. Also there has been a new update to WC3 just recently after 15 years, so it's rumoured to be more stuff for WC in the future
As someone who have loved warcraft since wc2 came out, longed for wc4 for such a long time, hated WoW from the start; this saddens me so much. for me with nintendo blizzard and valve in existence i felt like the future kind of was made, it was guaranteed there always would be games that i love. now i never know if there will be a game i love in the coming decade or not. especially with breath of the wild being anything but the zelda game i longed for.
Half life 3 will not exist because they no longer want to make that game anymore. Valve has a very weird way they develop games. They don't force you to work on a specific project, they legit tell you work on whatever you want.

They had the entire script written. The guy that left valve released it as kinda a fuck you. Just changed the names of people so he couldn't get sued.

That, I think, is the saddest thing. In my mind they've gone from a company that I used to be very aware of, to one I just kind of ignore as the entity that keeps Steam going. If they announce a game, everyone will probably lose their shit, so I don't even need to stay up to date with Valve news
Same, I m not playing half life 2 episode 2 because I know there won't be 3rd one. It just saddens me, they have all resources but still they won't.

Much like how great game studios inspire the next generation of game designers, the counselors who made my life better inspired me to join camp staff, and even as I watch the last of the men and women who continue to inspire me leave, I think back to the first time I got a bullseye, getting lost in the woods after being told "hey go that way," watching the gathered staff sing bittersweet camp songs through teary eyes, I cry a little, much like when I remember those long nights tucked away in a little "cave" in my best friend's closet playing Battlefront 2, watching my older cousin play mechquest on our grandparent's dinky windows 95 pc, or my morbid curiosity of this new game my friend had just bought called mortal combat

Rena8 : Agreed, crazy how they did not respect us for Half life
What's funny is Valve was dying even before Dota 2, because that game was nothing more than a remake of an existing mod on Warcraft 3. And the Warcraft 3 version at the time had more heroes/content, so Valve just made things look better and cut 20% of the heroes so they could add them in later. The last new IP they made was Left 4 Dead in 2008.
Good video, boyo. Boohyah
The Act Man Good to see you here
The last new IP Valve made was Half-life in 1998 (or maybe Ricochet in 2000). The rest came from outside the company.
Isnt CS a fanmade mod from the Gmod as well? Doesnt make a lot of original games haha

To the people we were meant to be?
I dont know but its probably safe to blame John Romero
The Portal background music gave me sudden and unexpected nostalgia, I'm gonna be broken all day.
But on a different note, I agree with what you're saying. Valve has been a success story that I've looked up to for years, and while the prospect of new games that will stay close to my heart is slim-to-none, I still respect them and what they've built. Maybe one day we'll have another good one, but I doubt it.

You deserve more likes, actually got me to laugh out loud. This is so accurate.
theagemon Valve does what their community wants.
Levi For Waifu card games are stupid
valve didn't do drugs . it just dropped out school . feels bad man
Here's what makes me believe Valve is still making games: VR.

War, war never changes.
@@wingvicarious wow you're so good at pressing ctrl+c and ctrl+v

Well said!
Aprox Strange....

Booyah! Valve reminds me of the father that left and never came back. Had good times while he was around just wish he'd come home now...
IMHO they'll never produce any game anymore.
I got some news for you.

This is very good
The fact that Gabe owns over half of valve is what makes it bad.

I profit in this situation ( I can afford more games & hats) so i'm happy. don't see what y'all are complainin' 'bout.
Christopher Gray dude its a joke. Look up war has changed
It's an MGS joke.
I’m getting so bored from Valve and Steam all there is just boring TF2 and Garry’s Mod.
More like a well oiled steam train.
The money was the fuel for the fires of greed that allowed them to open the throttle valve and keep the money train driven by steam chugging along.
Need a gif about this 2:59
that-s the best industrial dance i ever seen.
Is there a name for that move??
*we need that name*

Look up Roy Purdy he does that dance/move sometimes in his videos.

Memes. Memes has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of dank memes created by no lifes and weebs. Half-Life 3 will not exist so long as Steam does. Same goes for WC IV never existing so long as WoW does.
KeeperOfProphecies jesus Christ I was gonna say that is quite the prophecy.
They don't force you to work on a specific project, they legit tell you work on whatever you want.
we need to kill steam, EVERYBODY MOVE TO GOG!
The best thing I did in this quarantine is I completed the entire Orange Box, played some TF2 and watched Raycevick's video.
It was the best!
