Great to finally see this collab surface from the depths, after a year and a half of delays. I will always be drawn to, and love Half-Life forever, man.
Something i really like about Entropy Zero is how well Aperture fits into the Half Life world. It honesty never felt like either dev teams actually wanted to make there games take place in the same universe and only did it for marketing purposes.Infact them actually being in the same universe kinda creates alot of problems (like for example… how does the Portal Gun exist when literally the combines whole goal is creating teleportation and will go through relentless lengths to get teleportation LESS stable than the portal gun.). Entropy Zero really fixes both problems and makes it seem like these worlds were always meant to collide.
( 7:27 ) Well i have an counter argument, maybe its not reusing assests, and Maybe GLaDoS made a Deal with The Combine to not invade them, GLaDOS give the Combine some Aperture Tech and The Combine don't invade Aperture. 1. The Combine Turrets and The Aperture Turrets have the same behaviour, both fall and both shoots bullets like crazy as an reaction 2. Since Portal 1 is years apart from Half-life 2, maybe the Deal has been made after the Humanity Surrender. 3. Since Aperture and Black Mesa are in a Race for govermant funding, in Oppsing Force, maybe Black Mesa tried to copy Aperture's Portal gun, and i know some ppl does not count the expansions as Canon. 4.I Know Mods are not Canon at all, But in Entropy Zero 2, Bad Cop says how Breen was interested in Aperture Science, further making the "Treaty or Agreement Between Combine and GLaDOS" Theory more plausible. That ends, my Argument, in case i said something wrong or said bullshit correct me in the replies.
I LOVE how you included a HDTF clip. I personally consider it canon purely because that would be the funniest thing in the world. In fact, for my ideal Half-Life 3/Episode 3 has a three way fight between Mitchell’s child soldiers, the Resistance, and Combine remnants fighting over the Borealis. President Keemstar would return and replace Brien as the new Combine puppet leader who commentates on what’s happening at that point in the game. The way Alyx’s ending would feature into this is have a scene where Eli and Gordon are doing auditions where they need a replacement for Alyx after Gman vanished her, and the player gets to choose from the different alternate Alyx models from Cinematic Mod. NOW THAT WOULD BE FUNNY! I’d pay good money to see this dumpster fire be made a reality🤣
I just want to say, you can't add a game to valve's half-life franchise section your self as a steamworks developer, valve has to do it, and HDTF is in the half-life franchise funny enough.
Portal 2's ending kind of confirms a happy ending for earth. With Portal 2 being set in the far future, yet in the end there is a healthy wheat field showing that life persisted. Also the co op stuff showing that there are signs of technology that aperture science defends against, might show that whatever society lives has higher end technology maybe.
A lot of them I interact with don't know it. Hell there was this one time where someone I once knew was like "Are you sure they are connected?" It's not really brought up all that much in the Portal Games. There is more stuff in Portal 1 and as the video goes on I lost more and more things to talk about.
Yeah for some people that is when they found out both games were connected. While in other cases and people I have talked to, they didn't know what Black Mesa was. Also, mentioned that song in the video.
GLaDOS monologue during the Portal 1 bossfight after you destroy the third core: "Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here." "I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside." "All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was." "Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer."
It's always nice that there's people out there that remember that the two games share the same universe together. I actually started out as a fan of portal but when the drought of portal content made me curious as to what happened outside of the confines of the aperture facilities, the answer was the parent half-life series. I had a lot of fun playing the half-life games up until I reached the ending for hl2 ep2. Again, another drought of things related to portal and half-life. That is until valve announced half-life alyx and stated it's a prequel to half-life 2. At first I was a bit saddened by that, I didn't have steamvr bac then, but it's half-life nonetheless. What I wasn't expecting was the ending they pulled for half-life alyx and it got me standing up from my chair and screaming at whatever streamer I was watching haha anyways, I love both portal and half-life, even if it's just a few games but the community mods around the two makes it worthwhile to enjoy other people's take on the half-life/portal narrative going forward
You are correct about Portal 2. Portal 1 takes place around 201X, so between HL1 and HL2. Bring your daughter to work day happened a week or so before the Black Mesa Incident in 200x. Now Erik Wolpaw said 1998 in the past when talking about the Black Mesa Incident/bring your daughter to work day was. However, Marc Laidlaw has corrected him on this and Erik just got the release date of HL1 mixed up. So no, Portal 1 takes place 10 years after HL1.
I stayed and watched the whole video because I love the editing. lol. 10/10 from a video editor like me. I love your style that made it super engaging. A good editing similar like yours is Kelski! You should check his HL Contents too. Keep making more content. You've earned another supporter 😎 Love it so much
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do know about Kelski and think that is an interesting comparison. If you wanna know my best editing it's probably in my POSTAL video. I really cooked in that video.
i think its good that the connections are suble because it helps you enjoy the games separately is not like you need to play a few half life games then porta 1 to understand the bigger story. you can play all of half life then all of portal and maybe not even realize the connection on a first playthrough. because say you play portal first all you need to understand is that black mesa is another competitor. and the line GLaDOS said about the combine can just be seen as desperate manipulation to get chell to stay. but then you play the games several times over and you start to realize all the connections and you realize how great VALVE is at making backstory and deep lore because you can play two whole games not even realizing they are connected to Half-Life. i also think the tonal differences between portal and HL makes it so much better because it makes the bombshell of them being connected that much better its hilarious to think while there's a resistance fighting aliens and an oppressing force on the surface there's a random lady stuck underground in upper Michigan solving puzzles and fighting robots then all of a sudden when she's done doing all that it appears that the combine is gone considering there's no way the combine would allow agriculture like that (From The Ending OF PORTAL 2) and there's also no way they ignored apertures existence considering that (in universe) it appears the combine either stole aperture tech(the Energy Pellets, Force Fields, Light Bridges In Ep 1 And P2) or worked with GlaDOS in some way to keep the combine away from the facility. and they have to know about the origins of the borealis from this hypothetical negotiation. although my last point does sort of dive into speculation and give a real in unverse reason of why there are assets used between both games.
I am flattered, but this video has kind of been done since 2022. All of the "good" parts are what I tweaked or added this year to make up for it. But yeah, hopefully next video will be better
Valve could legit combine a half-life 3 and portal 3. Have some snarky name about the number 3. Have 2 chapters, 1 with Gordon as the main protagonist, continue the story where it left off with more portal references, maybe even have him go to an early aperture science and/or the spot Chel enters the surface. Have some sort of story reason explaining why Gordon was there and what is goal is (the borealis probably) and end half-life satisfyingly but leaving the door open for Chel to finish what Gordon started. Have gman say some cryptic shit and have "chapter 2" show the future when Chel exists, have her finish whatever story reason Gordon was there (probably the borealis or something) have chel use the portal gun in a more open world setting with confined story beat sections for puzzles. Then have her finish where Gordon left off and finish whatever other portal story we needed (probably would be something connected to Chels parents since they were teased so much, maybe the worked on the borealis!! Idfk) wrap it all up with a gman monolog. Both fanbases get thier 3rd game, both stories end properly, and it connects all the dots that haven't been fully connected in thier joint universe. This is all random garbage. Obviously something proper, but something in this vein could be done.
Theory: The Investment Oppoturnity Videos are Non-canon because of The Workshop of Portal 2 and the Fact the Videos have the Voice of Cave Johnson in His Healthy Era despite dying from Moon Rock Cancer.

This videos kinda odd to me... these two labs are across the united states from eachother and never get close enough to necessarily directly interact, however they very much are in the same universe. Why does it matter if they do or dont have a bunch of other connections
The fact the two labs are connected at all is odd, the only reason i can think of is cave johnson was upset his company was going bankrupt and he just googled "science labs" and picked the first result to make public enemy #1
Half life alyx makes it more confusing as the world map shows us that the entirety of north america was destroyed during the 7 hour war, which means that aperture should be completly destroyed in the first game. But it isnt
Well we don't really know what that could mean. Is North America completely destroyed or is it uninhabitable? In Portal 1, I kind of like to think it was a part where it wasn't really affected. In EP2 we are driving through beautiful forests and environments. So I think it's possible that is something like that. Portal 2 takes place 10,000ish years later so that is another can of worms
I like assuming that even if the continent's destroyed or uninhabitable because Aperture is largely mostly deep underground and fairly sealed it would be relatively unscathed from almost any catastrophe. I also just can't see the combine having a huge presence or interest in rural Michigan specifically. I firmly believe most of the boundary waters are probably still fairly natural plus the X on the HLA map being mainly centered on the US and the way the red boarders are drawn around it it's also plausible Canadas relatively unscathed further inland... albeit increasingly infested with xen immigrants
6:22 good heavens, if I were the DoD and I were looking for a new Fuel System Icing Inhibitor I can't possibly think why I would choose one that "inhibits ice, nothing more" over one that was "arguably alive".
Just a theory, but: 1. Black Mesa and Aperture are fighting for government money in the 70s and 80s. 2. Black Mesa has their budget approved while Aperture has to get by on private funds. 3. Black Mesa manages to create the massive portal that results from the cascade event. Aperture continues to research handheld portal technology. 4. The Combine detect the cascade and hyperspace to Earth looking for the advanced culture that created it. 5. A secret alien faction has been watching the conflict and sends G-Man back to Black Mesa shortly before Gordon Freeman arrives to intervene in the timeline. 6. The Combine begin to utilize the portals that have been spawned by the cascade to scout Earth. 7. Chell is born to scientist parents and placed in a Relaxation Vault. 8. While Gordon is fighting the Combine spawn in Black Mesa, Chell is maturing in relaxation. 9. G-Man pulls Gordon into a form of relaxation vault until it is time to face the Combine again. 10. Chell reaches maturity and is put through testing by GLaDOS. 11. The Combine finally reach Earth and invade, resulting in the 7 hours war. 12. Chell goes back into relaxation while Gordon is brought back into wakefulness to fight the Combine on Earth. 13. Chell is awakened some decades later to test again due to the failing state of Aperture. 14. Episode 1 and 2 happen. 15. Chell tests, again. She escapes the facility, finally. 16. Chell and Gordon meet up as Gordon and Alyx Vance are pursuing the Overseer who has kidnapped Alyx's father, Eli. 17. Alyx, Gordon, and Chell are swept up in a portal storm which drops them in a time void on board the Borealis. 18. Half Portal happens aboard the Borealis.

If we ever get a Half-Life movie they NEED to have Freeman be played by Ross Scott (basically canonize Freeman’s Mind and have his scenes be a best bits from that AMAZING series😂), and for Otis to be played by Kevin James since he’s basically Half-Life’s Paul Blart (there’s even a line about how he used to be a mall cop🤣). That would be funny!

Marc Laidlaw starts to come across as worse of a writer when it comes to these series, with a lack of commitment to connecting these universes in fun ways that would delight players. Saying it'd make both universes seem smaller if... two of the most ambitious research companies in the country were aware of one another?? Smart dude but definitely needs to put more effort into challenging himself to connect these universes is compelling ways, instead of the hand-wavy "not canon" nonsense which adds nothing interesting to their existing work.
Edit: I thiught the guy saying it was a Half Life write not a portal writer, take my inane ramblings with a pound of salt The guy that said he didn't like that Half-Life & Portal being connected because it made them both feel smaller had a point but after revisiting the games myself i dont really agree with it anymore because 1. Theres literally no way you could consider either of them literally small with half life spanning over the entirely of Earth plus other dimensions and Aperture spanning an entire quarter of the Earth 2. Black Mesa has been referenced in Portal since the first game, they were always ment to be connected. What I'm trying to say is that the guy who said that quote probably was only thinking about half-life's referencing of portal with the borealis, and I think he was just glazing over the portals side of the references besides I think it's a cool plot point to have the combine find a piece of aperture technology that not even they could replicate.
To be honest i dont think we need a portal 3. I think it would be so much better if half life 3 came out and it did the whole thing with the ship and had gordon meet chell and glados somehow and stop the combine together. And maybe to explain more of portal 2s ending with chell being throw to the "surface" it would be cool if there was a portal DLC where the outside was another test my glados. And just explains how glados and chell would meet up with gordon. That would be a perfect sequel to BOTH games and tie them off with a bow.
what is happening at the start of the video lmaoo im trying to focus on what youre saying but I just see you flying around almost dying shooting portals everywhere hahaha
Well technically tf2 is linked to portal, (See the Ap-Sap) meaning it is linked to Half life. That's correct. Australium is in half life, and I am willing to bet that is what the sample on the trolley from the beginning of half life is.
Some wild ideas: The infamous ship is named "Borealis" and was built as an icebreaker. It was built in a very deep mine Somehing happened and the ship ended in the Arctic People in-universe refers to the happening as some kind of tragic teleportation accident. But, for all intents and purposes, the ship ended in the place they wanted it to be. So, whatever happened, the teleportation part worked as intended. The ship is in the correct place and looks pretty much intact. If there was some kind of tragedy or failure, it wasn't the act of teleportation itself, but something linked to it, that we know nothing about (but Eli knew). Those are the things we can know for sure.
But then, what did really happen? My speculations: -Kleiner is very eager to study the ship. That means the tech involved is superior to their actual teleportation tech. Reasons for that superiority: 1) Escalability. Rebel teleportation tech seems to be able to transport three people at most, while Aperture tech transported a whole ship, its cargo, and part of the dock 2) Eficiency: Aperture teleportation tech looks much more energy eficient: the portal gun allows as many portals as one will with no external energy input, and no energy seems to be needed for the teleportation itself. Rebel teleporters seem much more power-hungry (outside Kleiner's lab there is a yard full electrical apparatus to power the teleport, Eli's uses vortigaunt power). Combine teleportation seems to be even less eficient, requiring dedicated massive and dangerous dark energy reactors. 3) Usability: Borealis tech doesn't seem to require a receiver at destination (if it needed that, the ship wouldn't be lost, Aperture would know where it ended because they built the receiver part first, on location) Large-scale local teleportation would have incredible advantages in a confrontation with the combine: You could transport armies, refugees, war machinery, bombs, even the invading forces themselves, wherever it was more tactically convenient, at any moment. -Eli wants to destroy the ship at all costs. What could be the reason? 1) Danger of being used by the combine. At the end of Episode 2, the superportal was destroyed, and the Combine were cut off, at least for a while. If the remaining forces of the Combine on Earth used that tech, they could use it for transporting more forces from their home world and retake the Earth. 2) The tech itself is dangerous. Something wrong happened with the Borealis, that little we know. But, what was it? 2.1) The portal gun uses a miniature black hole as a power source. A much bigger teleporter could need a bigger, more dangerous black hole, that has the power of destroying the whole Earth if something goes wrong 2.2) The teleportation did something to the people who were teleported along the ship. Maybe there are g-forces, temperatures or electric fields involved too big for people to survive the teleportation. Or maybe weirder things that just death: the whole affair of the teleporting ship is based on the story "the Philadelphia experiment", where the US Navy teleported a warship, and, even if that looked like a succes at first, the people who were teleported ended very, very badly. 2.3) Judith's teleporter had some weird unintended time-related consequences (the "we made a very slow teleporter" affair, were Alyx and Gordon experimented one week delay) Maybe large scale teleportation has the chance of messing with the whole space-time continuum in some unsavoury way.
I’d kill for a movie about how Cave and Caroline met, who they were as people and how Caroline dealt with Cave’s death and becoming the CEO for a short while before being put into GLaDOS.

Great to finally see this collab surface from the depths, after a year and a half of delays.
I will always be drawn to, and love Half-Life forever, man.
Great video for the 25th anniversary!
The Combine are NOT trying to get portal technology. They already have it. They are trying to conquer Earth.
( 7:27 ) Well i have an counter argument, maybe its not reusing assests, and Maybe GLaDoS made a Deal with The Combine to not invade them, GLaDOS give the Combine some Aperture Tech and The Combine don't invade Aperture.
1. The Combine Turrets and The Aperture Turrets have the same behaviour, both fall and both shoots bullets like crazy as an reaction
14:45 my best guess to what the lumber co. would be is that maybe it was a part of white forest? there were several lumber mills surrounding it
I watched a vid on the entire timeline of halflife and portal (combined) before back when alyx came out, and god this shit is wild
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
I kinda assumed that Aperture Desk Job took place in the pure intellect Cave Johnson universe from the peti dlc
Maybe so
There is no way that a lot of portal fans don't know it's in the half-life universe. It's brought up several times in unmissible dialogue.
A lot of them I interact with don't know it. Hell there was this one time where someone I once knew was like "Are you sure they are connected?" It's not really brought up all that much in the Portal Games. There is more stuff in Portal 1 and as the video goes on I lost more and more things to talk about.
It's even in the song... can they not be clueless.
Yeah for some people that is when they found out both games were connected. While in other cases and people I have talked to, they didn't know what Black Mesa was. Also, mentioned that song in the video.
also the two colors of the portal gun are orange and blue and black mesa logo is orange and aperture is blue
Yeah that is what me and Mauricio did for our thumbnails
GLaDOS monologue during the Portal 1 bossfight after you destroy the third core:
"Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here."
"I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside."
"All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was."
"Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer."
must've been crazy working at the black-mesa™ lumberyard with the MTM-8 Robotic Loader
What I wasn't expecting was the ending they pulled for half-life alyx and it got me standing up from my chair and screaming at whatever streamer I was watching haha
anyways, I love both portal and half-life, even if it's just a few games but the community mods around the two makes it worthwhile to enjoy other people's take on the half-life/portal narrative going forward
Good comment 👏
The Portal gameplay in the first seconds of the video made my day! It was too funny. Liked and subbed just because of that.
I knew people would love that!
I always thought that Portal 1 was before or close to the time HL1.
Then Portal 2 to be very distant in the future, long after the combine left earth.
The games were connected for commercial reasons. Lore of the universe was never expanded beyond the concept of making Aperture a rival to Black Mesa.
Nah, the Combine are really done for💀🙏😭 14:15
One of the best comment I have gotten on this video (dead ass)
when that guy in half life said "Our peers" he said it in a away to say "we are better then them in every way and you know i kinda agree
I friggin' love this TH-cam channel
Happy 25 anniversary to the og half life
0:47 Gee Whiz! For a second there, I almost thought he thought one was better than the other! Glad to know I was just wrong!!
Portal is good still 💪
i think its good that the connections are suble because it helps you enjoy the games separately is not like you need to play a few half life games then porta 1 to understand the bigger story. you can play all of half life then all of portal and maybe not even realize the connection on a first playthrough. because say you play portal first all you need to understand is that black mesa is another competitor. and the line GLaDOS said about the combine can just be seen as desperate manipulation to get chell to stay. but then you play the games several times over and you start to realize all the connections and you realize how great VALVE is at making backstory and deep lore because you can play two whole games not even realizing they are connected to Half-Life. i also think the tonal differences between portal and HL makes it so much better because it makes the bombshell of them being connected that much better its hilarious to think while there's a resistance fighting aliens and an oppressing force on the surface there's a random lady stuck underground in upper Michigan solving puzzles and fighting robots then all of a sudden when she's done doing all that it appears that the combine is gone considering there's no way the combine would allow agriculture like that (From The Ending OF PORTAL 2) and there's also no way they ignored apertures existence considering that (in universe) it appears the combine either stole aperture tech(the Energy Pellets, Force Fields, Light Bridges In Ep 1 And P2) or worked with GlaDOS in some way to keep the combine away from the facility. and they have to know about the origins of the borealis from this hypothetical negotiation. although my last point does sort of dive into speculation and give a real in unverse reason of why there are assets used between both games.
another EDC upload clutch
Nice video! :D👍
Love the transition at 2:19 as well!
If you wanna be more blown away by my editing skills watch Quake 2 or my Postal video.
Other that, thank you a lot man. This video is by a different me and I have grown more since then.
@@averagenecoarcfanwhy the fuck wouldn't he know his competitors
Half life alyx makes it more confusing as the world map shows us that the entirety of north america was destroyed during the 7 hour war, which means that aperture should be completly destroyed in the first game. But it isnt
Well we don't really know what that could mean. Is North America completely destroyed or is it uninhabitable? In Portal 1, I kind of like to think it was a part where it wasn't really affected. In EP2 we are driving through beautiful forests and environments. So I think it's possible that is something like that. Portal 2 takes place 10,000ish years later so that is another can of worms
@@ElephantsDoingCrack yeah its just really confusing isnt it
I like assuming that even if the continent's destroyed or uninhabitable because Aperture is largely mostly deep underground and fairly sealed it would be relatively unscathed from almost any catastrophe.
Hope you get big i like your editing style

GOATED channel name I must say
there’s actually was, and old scrapped ending to portal 1, where chell would actually travel to xen? In order to escape somehow.
I'm aware. At the time I didn't wanna add it for reasons
we gonna ignore the fact that chell was sent flying after going through the portal at the start
Just a theory, but:
18. Half Portal happens aboard the Borealis.
okay now i want a game/movie about batman fighting the combine
13:35 Pretty sure Black Mesa stole it from Aperture

Thats crazy
If we ever get a Half-Life movie they NEED to have Freeman be played by Ross Scott (basically canonize Freeman’s Mind and have his scenes be a best bits from that AMAZING series😂), and for Otis to be played by Kevin James since he’s basically Half-Life’s Paul Blart (there’s even a line about how he used to be a mall cop🤣). That would be funny!

(so basicaly in the part where adrian walker discovers a gonome made by his clone he had never seen it before seems like he has forgoten the gonome or not) (in half life 1 adrian shepherd discovered the gonome for the first time) is it just the same person with a name changed? or not? 11:58 when I came across this, I had no idea what it was. Because I never played half life.
Marc Laidlaw starts to come across as worse of a writer when it comes to these series, with a lack of commitment to connecting these universes in fun ways that would delight players. Saying it'd make both universes seem smaller if... two of the most ambitious research companies in the country were aware of one another?? Smart dude but definitely needs to put more effort into challenging himself to connect these universes is compelling ways, instead of the hand-wavy "not canon" nonsense which adds nothing interesting to their existing work.
the adrian shepard reference is the most left field shit ive heard
how little of a life do you have to have to make that conclusion holy shit
Edit: I thiught the guy saying it was a Half Life write not a portal writer, take my inane ramblings with a pound of salt
The guy that said he didn't like that Half-Life & Portal being connected because it made them both feel smaller had a point but after revisiting the games myself i dont really agree with it anymore because
1. Theres literally no way you could consider either of them literally small with half life spanning over the entirely of Earth plus other dimensions and Aperture spanning an entire quarter of the Earth
I mean... Yeah this is what I kinda concluded in the video. It was more or less a video that looks how both series acknowledge each other
12:38 is that the manhunt OST I hear???

Maybe black mesa? That was a joke, haha fat chance!
They could kill 2 birds with 1 stone by just making a game called "The Third" or something and its just a 3rd portal AND halflife game. easy.

Some wild ideas:
The infamous ship is named "Borealis" and was built as an icebreaker.
It was built in a very deep mine
Somehing happened and the ship ended in the Arctic
People in-universe refers to the happening as some kind of tragic teleportation accident.
My speculations:
-Kleiner is very eager to study the ship. That means the tech involved is superior to their actual teleportation tech. Reasons for that superiority:
1) Escalability. Rebel teleportation tech seems to be able to transport three people at most, while Aperture tech transported a whole ship, its cargo, and part of the dock
2) Eficiency: Aperture teleportation tech looks much more energy eficient: the portal gun allows as many portals as one will with no external energy input, and no energy seems to be needed for the teleportation itself.
3) Usability: Borealis tech doesn't seem to require a receiver at destination (if it needed that, the ship wouldn't be lost, Aperture would know where it ended because they built the receiver part first, on location)
Large-scale local teleportation would have incredible advantages in a confrontation with the combine: You could transport armies, refugees, war machinery, bombs, even the invading forces themselves, wherever it was more tactically convenient, at any moment.
A much bigger teleporter could need a bigger, more dangerous black hole, that has the power of destroying the whole Earth if something goes wrong
2.2) The teleportation did something to the people who were teleported along the ship.
