Mark Jens same here. All of my best friends ended up going to college and becoming incredibly liberal (which isn’t inherently bad) and I joined the Navy and ended up going all over the place. I came home and they absolutely despised me because I had just gotten home from war and they absolutely hated anyone who didn’t just throw down their weapons and walk away. Sometimes people just take different paths.

I defanitly relate to this super hard, in 8th grade i had a leg problem and couldn’t even get up for an entire year and ended up really starting high school in 10th grade. Goddamn, Jakey. THIS IS ART. The cinematography, old clips, and editing perfectly complimented what you had to say. It all hit right in the feels. It blows my mind how you absolutely bodyslam any topic or style you try to tackle. And this kind of story is exactly why games mean so much to so many people. A lot of people miss this when talking about games, but they're more than just what's on the disc. They're a time and a place and the feelings you were having when you played them and how they helped you cope with those feelings.

Me and my ex girlfriend who was my first girlfriend and best friend at the time, the first person i really loved, played all the bioshock games together on ps3, it was really fun and a great memory they really mean alot to me, i just found out a few months ago that she had committed suicide, this video really made me emotional but also reminded me that even small things like this can mean so much to people. will always have those memories.
I swear you've tapped into a certain zeitgeist of growing up in the late 2000's. Your introspective videos hit really hard and speak to the profound ways that pop culture artifacts get woven into the fabric of our lives. Something about the interactivity of games makes them a space for expression and self discovery, a safe space where control can be exercised even in the midst of the shitty helplessness of childhood and adolescence. These videos must resonate with a whole lot of people.
Also, the time where it wasn't so much about playing the newest games, as it was just playing games. I spent plenty of time playing Halo 3 and CoD 4, but I spent just as much time playing whatever game was preowned for £10 in the store.
I have had a similar experience this last year, except with Factorio. I moved to Vancouver from small town Saskatchewan. It was a hard move, and my best friend for 12 years gave me a steam gift card. He said “Buy Factorio. Let’s play when you get there. I love you, man.” I got to Vancouver and discovered he was hit and killed by a drunk driver the day after I left. I felt sad, depressed, and hatred. I was alone, lost, and having dark thoughts. I was considering ending it all. Then I remembered my buddy, Josef, and what he told me. I went online, with trembling hands and bought Factorio with the steam gift card he handed me the last time I saw him alive. I booted it up, and fell in love. I played through the pain, through the thoughts, and he played with me, in spirit. We went on adventures for oil, uranium, and biter nests. We crafted massive factories to create entire worlds. We watched as your civilization reached the stars. When I saw the victory screen after launching my first rocket. I was sad. I felt my buddy leaving my side. We were on that adventure, and it was over. I cried for days and nights over him. I struggled in school, and I went back to that dark space in my mind. I then got back from school one day, being notified I want on track to graduate high school in 3 months from that day. I honestly considered suicide. I thought it was the only way. I than thought of Josef. His life, cut short. I rebooted my dusty PC, and launched Factorio once again. The familiar opening scene brought a familiar sense of joy to me. I clicked on “Play”, then “New Game”. Hundreds of hours later, my empire is shaping still, Josef, my guide, my companion, my buddy. I managed to go from failing grades to ~80% in all my classes and accepted into UBC, with a scholarship. I survived. To this day, I wish I could have been at his funeral, two thousand people, his entire school, payed respects over the course of a week after his passing. I visited my hometown last month, and saw his gravestone, just a few hundred paces from my grandfather’s. I laid the steam card at the base, than left, feeling like we had paid each other back. I left my hometown, tearfully, on the late night flight back to Vancouver. I stared out the window the entire time, listening to his Spotify playlist of his favourite rap music. Reliving our entire childhood together. I never felt more complete than that day. I love you Josef.

Animal Crossing was my escape when I was twelve years old and living in a chaotic household. The feeling of having some sort of control in an innocent world that gave you some kind of real freedom was a gift that I can't equate anything to at that time. This is why games are so special. It's not just entertainment - it can be a way of getting through times that are too hard to process in this big chaotic confusing world. Thanks for this vid Jakey boi~
It was mine too. My mother I hadn't seen in a decade got custody of me, and we moved 600 miles away to a place I had never been and knew no one in, into a family I didn't know. But I had a GameCube I'd gotten a week prior. And I had Animal Crossing and Wind Waker. Pretty sure those two games actually legitimately saved my life - because even with them, I came pretty close to giving up sometimes... but maintaining that goddamn town and seeing KK every weekend legitimately gave me something to look forward to, and sailing the seas in WW let me feel an escape I hadn't experienced prior to then.
I actually gave one of my closest friends both Bioshock 1 & 2 around 4 years back because they were so amazing to me, except he hasn't finished 1 or even touched 2... *I'LL THROTTLE HIM* and then give him a hug for good measure.

Jakeys general speech reminds me of a old friend catching up with me about stuff we were both interested in, everything he says is oddly familiar but also refreshing having another input involved.
2019 was one of the worst years of my life. I started my first year in college and was dealing with a lot of shit. My classmates and seniors were mean, I was feeling alone because all of my friends from high school parted ways, my grades went down because I had almost no motivation to study for tests and attending to classes (I even had to repeat that grade), but above all, my depression had gotten really bad. In December, when the school year was over, I was completely wrecked, I barely recognized myself and had bad expectations for my next year. On Christmas my dad gave me a ps4 with a copy of spider-man ps4. I felt more happy in that one Christmas than I felt in that whole shitty year. Spider-man ps4 was the first ps4 game I ever played and it holds a special place in my heart because it made me rediscover my love for gaming and brought me back to when I was a kid playing ps2. And the one person I should thank for that is my dad. You rule, dad.
I met a kid on Xbox Live when I was playing splinter cell double agent. He lived in California and I lived in Utah but we played every day, as in halo and cod ect. As years went on and new gen came out we haven't played a lot. He was playing PC and I was still on Xbox 360. I saved for awhile to get an Xbox One. One time he got a hold of me and BOY was I surprised he wasn't no "squeaker" anymore. He was telling how he had family problems and was living in a mentally abusive environment and how he was going to move. I felt really bad how much sadder and mad he sounded after not talking since we were like 12 yrs old. A couple of months later he was asking me if I knew what elder Scrolls online was, I said "no, but I know the elder Scrolls franchise" He was saying how we need to play this game together. Later on he told me I could have all his games because he was transferring to PC. Well so he did and we talk in discord once in awhile. But these 6 years of friendship from just one round of team death match can really impact you in life.
I remember when I played on the Xbox 360, I was playing on GTA 4 and I was driving around and found a random, I honked my horn a few times and he got in and we were the best of buddies for the entire game until we had to go, we had to leave we added each other and talked later the next day, he turned out to be an Aussie around my age and we just instantly clicked we played everything together, Minecraft bf3, CoD mw2-3 bo1 - 2 anything you nsme it we were the best of friends, fast forward a year or so he got an Xbox 1 and I was still on the 360 we still talked to another but after a while it ended not because we didn't like each other but for other reasons. He was one of my best friends during that time of my life since I was never really able to make many friends during school, and I honestly miss him so much and want to reconnect with him.
@@chef8645 i had a similar experience and maybe you'll get lucky and reconnect and click, but for me so much time had passed and we have so little in common anymore that there's nothing left. Sometimes it's best just to remember what was.
I watched my son and daughter grow up playing video games, we only had the one tv...some of my fondest memories of their childhoods was watching he and his sister cheer each other on playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot (and Bushido Blade!)...Bioshock and Vice City were my favorites..as a responsible parent I insisted that he change out of that pimp style Hawaian shirt and put on his 3 piece suit (which he recently told me could sometimes be a real pain in the ass to get to the tailor shop) in Vice City and I strictly forbade him to hurt the strange little girls in Bioshock, I told him that he'd need them someday, and I was right. This was a great video, Nakey, you made an old man very happy this morning....
I go back to this video when i start to feel dark feelings about myself. Like when i find myself being negative or hurtful to myself and find it difficult to admit that I can love myself. This video made me tear up. Oblivion was that game for me. A friend gave it to me right before I graduated high school and I moved away from everyone. I was at a time in my life where I really just wanted to die because I had no idea what to do in life, and Oblivion really helped me soothe my soul until I got myself together.

Hey Jake, from 14-18 I was miserable. I had no friends and was so depressed I spent most of my life waking up, eating breakfast, then laying down and watching youtube all day. I was so depressed and Anxious and every day was so depressing. Video games and movies were my biggest escape. I didn't have friends, and I was incredibly social. Given a sudden medical development it caused the 14-17 me being in an independent school, I had to teach myself. But at least I had videogames and movies to escape with. I wasn't "Scot, the kid crippled with constant headaches and depression." I was "John Marston, Jason Brody, Master Chief, and so much more." I wasn't stuck with misery when my life was at its worse. And I have the developers of so many great games to thank for it. Your video game me a lump in my throat reminding me of how important they were to me. Thank you. Stay gold jakey boy.
Clunt Westwood you can get so lost in a story, watching or playing as someone who is different, that you care about, but also knowing subconsciously that it’s not reality. Stories of the fundamental form of entertainment and an effective form of therapy, especially for someone going through their awkward stages. They made me realize that life would get better, and it has.
My Uncle gave me a 360 and a bunch of games for my 12th birthday. A month or two after he gave the 360 and games my family moved from Washington DC to Mountain View, California. He lived in Seattle at the time but moved to California only a little while after we moved there. He visited a lot and bought me a ton of games. One time he took me to GameStop and we bought Bioshock 1 and 2 with all the DLC. Bioshock made me so happy, I loved the story and gameplay and everything about the game was just so good. After a few months of finding no jobs (He’s a technical artist for games) he got an interview at Blizzard. He got the job and is now a technical artist for World of Warcraft. He’s the reason my mom lets me play video games, he’s the reason I got so into video games and the reason that I’ve matured and grown so much.

The first video I saw of yours was the death of couch multiplayer- a video where you and the viewer both went down a little nostalgia trip about playing video games with your little brother or friends and calling them big stinkies while you hit them with a falco punch. That video instantly got me to subscribe but it also made me think about my mid-childhood a lot. I had a lot of good times but most of them were eventually ruined by moving away countless times (10 total). The video made me feel like I missed out a lot on memories as a child. However through this video, you brought an unbelievably relatable story where you basically went through the same thing that I went through. I dont feel like I missed out- I feel like I went through the ups and downs that every kid goes through instead. Seriously thanks for making this video. Ps. Dude, I relate to this so hard. Bioshock helped me through a particularly tough time as well. I was failing school, depressed, and had lost most of my friends as a result of some bad decisions I made. Bioshock was an escape from that. While I played bioshock, I completely forgot about how far downhill my life had gone. I was immersed in the world of rapture, and while I was there I didn't need to worry about all this stuff. I was never given a copy of it like you were, but one of my coworkers recommended it, and buying it was the best decision I've made in a while

I defanitly relate to this super hard, in 8th grade i had a leg problem and couldn’t even get up for an entire year and ended up really starting high school in 10th grade. I was super depressed because of this and not being able to see anyone and everyone’s too young and busy with school to just come on over... I lost a lot of friends in that time and it was really weird coming back to a lot of the ones i have nowadays, cause i had no idea how to interact with them as Mr.NakeyJakey here has said.

Me and my ex girlfriend who was my first girlfriend and best friend at the time, the first person i really loved, played all the bioshock games together on ps3, it was really fun and a great memory they really mean alot to me, i just found out a few months ago that she had committed suicide, this video really made me emotional but also reminded me that even small things like this can mean so much to people. will always have those memories.

I swear you've tapped into a certain zeitgeist of growing up in the late 2000's. Your introspective videos hit really hard and speak to the profound ways that pop culture artifacts get woven into the fabric of our lives. Something about the interactivity of games makes them a space for expression and self discovery, a safe space where control can be exercised even in the midst of the shitty helplessness of childhood and adolescence. These videos must resonate with a whole lot of people.

I have had a similar experience this last year, except with Factorio. I moved to Vancouver from small town Saskatchewan. It was a hard move, and my best friend for 12 years gave me a steam gift card. He said “Buy Factorio. Let’s play when you get there. I love you, man.”
I got to Vancouver and discovered he was hit and killed by a drunk driver the day after I left. I felt sad, depressed, and hatred. I was alone, lost, and having dark thoughts. I was considering ending it all.
Then I remembered my buddy, Josef, and what he told me. I went online, with trembling hands and bought Factorio with the steam gift card he handed me the last time I saw him alive. I booted it up, and fell in love.
I played through the pain, through the thoughts, and he played with me, in spirit. We went on adventures for oil, uranium, and biter nests. We crafted massive factories to create entire worlds. We watched as your civilization reached the stars.
When I saw the victory screen after launching my first rocket. I was sad. I felt my buddy leaving my side. We were on that adventure, and it was over. I cried for days and nights over him. I struggled in school, and I went back to that dark space in my mind.
I then got back from school one day, being notified I want on track to graduate high school in 3 months from that day. I honestly considered suicide. I thought it was the only way.
I than thought of Josef. His life, cut short. I rebooted my dusty PC, and launched Factorio once again. The familiar opening scene brought a familiar sense of joy to me. I clicked on “Play”, then “New Game”.
Hundreds of hours later, my empire is shaping still, Josef, my guide, my companion, my buddy. I managed to go from failing grades to ~80% in all my classes and accepted into UBC, with a scholarship. I survived.
To this day, I wish I could have been at his funeral, two thousand people, his entire school, payed respects over the course of a week after his passing.
I visited my hometown last month, and saw his gravestone, just a few hundred paces from my grandfather’s. I laid the steam card at the base, than left, feeling like we had paid each other back. I left my hometown, tearfully, on the late night flight back to Vancouver. I stared out the window the entire time, listening to his Spotify playlist of his favourite rap music. Reliving our entire childhood together. I never felt more complete than that day.

Animal Crossing was my escape when I was twelve years old and living in a chaotic household. The feeling of having some sort of control in an innocent world that gave you some kind of real freedom was a gift that I can't equate anything to at that time. This is why games are so special. It was mine too. My mother I hadn't seen in a decade got custody of me, and we moved 600 miles away to a place I had never been and knew no one in, into a family I didn't know.
But I had a GameCube I'd gotten a week prior. And I had Animal Crossing and Wind Waker.
Pretty sure those two games actually legitimately saved my life - because even with them, I came pretty close to giving up sometimes... but maintaining that goddamn town and seeing KK every weekend legitimately gave me something to look forward to, and sailing the seas in WW let me feel an escape I hadn't experienced prior to then.
Ah I remember falling asleep playing it on my lil DS Lite. The music was so relaxing and the way the game turned to nighttime at night comforted me. 🥺

2019 was one of the worst years of my life. I started my first year in college and was dealing with a lot of shit. My classmates and seniors were mean, I was feeling alone because all of my friends from high school parted ways, my grades went down because I had almost no motivation to study for tests and attending to classes (I even had to repeat that grade), but above all, my depression had gotten really bad. In December, when the school year was over, I was completely wrecked, I barely recognized myself and had bad expectations for my next year. On Christmas my dad gave me a ps4 with a copy of spider-man ps4. I felt more happy in that one Christmas than I felt in that whole shitty year. Spider-man ps4 was the first ps4 game I ever played and it holds a special place in my heart because it made me rediscover my love for gaming and brought me back to when I was a kid playing ps2. And the one person I should thank for that is my dad.

I met a kid on Xbox Live when I was playing splinter cell double agent. He lived in California and I lived in Utah but we played every day, as in halo and cod ect. As years went on and new gen came out we haven't played a lot. He was playing PC and I was still on Xbox 360. I saved for awhile to get an Xbox One. One time he got a hold of me and BOY was I surprised he wasn't no "squeaker" anymore. He was telling how he had family problems and was living in a mentally abusive environment and how he was going to move. I felt really bad how much sadder and mad he sounded after not talking since we were like 12 yrs old. A couple of months later he was asking me if I knew what elder Scrolls online was, I said "no, but I know the elder Scrolls franchise"
He was saying how we need to play this game together. Later on he told me I could have all his games because he was transferring to PC. Well so he did and we talk in discord once in awhile. But these 6 years of friendship from just one round of team death match can really impact you in life.
I wish I had a friendship like that... maybe some day🙄

I remember when I played on the Xbox 360, I was playing on GTA 4 and I was driving around and found a random, I honked my horn a few times and he got in and we were the best of buddies for the entire game until we had to go, we had to leave we added each other and talked later the next day, he turned out to be an Aussie around my age and we just instantly clicked we played everything together, Minecraft bf3, CoD mw2-3 bo1 - 2 anything you nsme it we were the best of friends, fast forward a year or so he got an Xbox 1 and I was still on the 360 we still talked to another but after a while it ended not because we didn't like each other but for other reasons. He was one of my best friends during that time of my life since I was never really able to make many friends during school, and I honestly miss him so much and want to reconnect with him.

I watched my son and daughter grow up playing video games, we only had the one tv...some of my fondest memories of their childhoods was watching he and his sister cheer each other on playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot (and Bushido Blade!)...Bioshock and Vice City were my favorites..as a responsible parent I insisted that he change out of that pimp style Hawaian shirt and put on his 3 piece suit (which he recently told me could sometimes be a real pain in the ass to get to the tailor shop) in Vice City and I strictly forbade him to hurt the strange little girls in Bioshock, I told him that he'd need them someday, and I was right. I was at a time in my life where I really just wanted to die because I had no idea what to do in life, and Oblivion really helped me soothe my soul until I got myself together.

Hey Jake, from 14-18 I was miserable. I had no friends and was so depressed I spent most of my life waking up, eating breakfast, then laying down and watching youtube all day. I was so depressed and Anxious and every day was so depressing. Video games and movies were my biggest escape. I didn't have friends, and I was incredibly social. Given a sudden medical development it caused the 14-17 me being in an independent school, I had to teach myself. But at least I had videogames and movies to escape with. I wasn't "Scot, the kid crippled with constant headaches and depression." I was "John Marston, Jason Brody, Master Chief, and so much more."
I wasn't stuck with misery when my life was at its worse. And I have the developers of so many great games to thank for it. Your video game me a lump in my throat reminding me of how important they were to me. Thank you. Stay gold jakey boy.

Clunt Westwood you can get so lost in a story, watching or playing as someone who is different, that you care about, but also knowing subconsciously that it’s not reality. Stories of the fundamental form of entertainment and an effective form of therapy, especially for someone going through their awkward stages. They made me realize that life would get better, and it has.

I can totally relate
My Uncle gave me a 360 and a bunch of games for my 12th birthday. A month or two after he gave the 360 and games my family moved from Washington DC to Mountain View, California. He lived in Seattle at the time but moved to California only a little while after we moved there. He visited a lot and bought me a ton of games. One time he took me to GameStop and we bought Bioshock 1 and 2 with all the DLC. Bioshock made me so happy, I loved the story and gameplay and everything about the game was just so good. After a few months of finding no jobs (He’s a technical artist for games) he got an interview at Blizzard. He got the job and is now a technical artist for World of Warcraft. He’s the reason my mom lets me play video games, he’s the reason I got so into video games and the reason that I’ve matured and grown so much.
I adore the cinematography in this. Something about the simple close shots on quiet furniture and house decor gives a really nostalgic feeling.
Jakey. The first video I saw of yours was the death of couch multiplayer- a video where you and the viewer both went down a little nostalgia trip about playing video games with your little brother or friends and calling them big stinkies while you hit them with a falco punch. That video instantly got me to subscribe but it also made me think about my mid-childhood a lot. I had a lot of good times but most of them were eventually ruined by moving away countless times (10 total). The video made me feel like I missed out a lot on memories as a child.
However through this video, you brought an unbelievably relatable story where you basically went through the same thing that I went through. I dont feel like I missed out- I feel like I went through the ups and downs that every kid goes through instead. Seriously thanks for making this video.

Dude, I relate to this so hard. Bioshock helped me through a particularly tough time as well. I was failing school, depressed, and had lost most of my friends as a result of some bad decisions I made. Bioshock was an escape from that. While I played bioshock, I completely forgot about how far downhill my life had gone. I was immersed in the world of rapture, and while I was there I didn't need to worry about all this stuff. I was never given a copy of it like you were, but one of my coworkers recommended it, and buying it was the best decision I've made in a while
