i'm studying music industry in college right now and every class that talks abt the advent of P2P filesharing services and the pirating it created makes me think about this video. i've sent it to people for studying purposes and posted it on discussion boards. i love this video, mr. jakey. thank u.
You wouldn't download a car now would you... Pyro. Yeah You can't fucking fool me with that Asian profile name. I know you want a car... But please... Think about the nine year olds. Please.
Lol, I'd pay anything to return the internet to that time. Big lawless wasteland with like 30,000 people on it. Everyone was pretty much competent in computers and it felt like a big awesome club.
Gotta love how morally bankrupt the music industry is, even to this day. Let's protect the millionaire musicians by suing an individual student with bills and student debt for downloading an mp3.
What's funny is that a couple years after that I was a victim of Sony BMG's '12 free CDs if you only buy one' scam that eventually led to a massive class action lawsuit.
I had so many friends who would just hand me entire discs full of MP3s that I never used any of the download services. Even in 1997, I used to get them off of mIRC off of friends. One good friend of mine would just find whatever song I asked for and DCC it to me.
I worked in the music industry for quite some time, both as a performer and a sound engineer, I studied it and went on to continue my career in it. The pirates are NOT the issue, musicians make most of their money from merch, people who pirate and go on to like the band usually end up buying both merch and their music, supporting the artists, those who don't like it were never going to buy it anyway, it isn't a "lost sale", it was never going to BE a sale. I never cared if someone wanted to share my ripped music with their friends, all it meant for me was more ticket sales at the door, more cds being sold, more interest and spreading to more people. Why the FUCK would you choose to metallica your potential fan base. It's easy for them to wah wah about it because they're already there, they have made it. All they contributed to was smaller bands not getting as much attention. You wouldn't steal a car, but you would test drive it, and you might buy it, if it isn't for you then you don't buy it. Same fucking logic
All you have to do is google "Music industry revenue over time" and look at a graph. The revenue took a fucking nose dive as soon as illegal downloads became popular.
This is true but Ticketmaster has pretty much ensured that I will never go to a concert ever again because I simply cannot justify the cost. I need to find new ways to support the artists I enjoy.
When I was 13 (2007) my friend would download songs for my MP3 player (an RCA Pearl) from LimeWire. My MP3 player one day just stopped working and later on, I found that my MP3 player had been infected with some kinda virus.
Huh... Weird, I downloaded tons of stuff off all those old p2p services; and never had any kind of serious issues, anywhere, no viruses that didn't get filtered out by my regular scans. One thing I didn't do was download pirated software from Kazzaa or Limewire, because I didn't trust them.
i mean to be fair for a while Netflix was solving the piracy issue because they were the only main streaming service at the time. Now that there's like 7 main ones now, pirating is back to where we started
Steam takes 30% from each purchase while 10% - 15% would be more than reasonable but ok, 70% is probably still kinda good. But Spotify pays next to nothing back to the artist so fuck 'em, I'm gonna still buy CDs and merch to support my favorite bands. And yes, I know that with major labels bands won't see a dime from album sales until the invested amount gets back.
I was excited about a new NakeyJakey video, and then I was just blown away from all the nostalgia he threw at me at once! It really felt like I was back in 2004 supergluing my door shut so the FBI wouldn’t crash in

Holy shit, my Limewire story is that as a young teen, I had downloaded it on my family's desktop to get some shitty music. Then a while later I happened to go to an anime/game convention in a different state that my friend invited me to, and I got sick while I was there, so I tried to call home multiple times while in tears and humiliating myself in front of everyone. The line was constantly busy, because it turns out my mom was on the phone with tech support trying to figure out why the computer had a shit ton of viruses. Therefore, my calls naturally never made it through. I ended up having to deal with it and I spent the night at my friend's house, sickness and all. And I now just convert youtube videos to MP3 files if I want music.

Same fucking logic
thats true, also if you download the album and you like it, your likely to buy the cd (at the time) for better quality...well at least for me anyways
THANK YOU
Solid comment 👍
All you have to do is google "Music industry revenue over time" and look at a graph. The revenue took a fucking nose dive as soon as illegal downloads became popular.
This is true but Ticketmaster has pretty much ensured that I will never go to a concert ever again because I simply cannot justify the cost. I need to find new ways to support the artists I enjoy.

Huh... Weird, I downloaded tons of stuff off all those old p2p services; and never had any kind of serious issues, anywhere, no viruses that didn't get filtered out by my regular scans.

The only way to beat piracy is to offer a better product (Spotify for music, Steam for games). Time to do the same with movies.
i mean to be fair for a while Netflix was solving the piracy issue because they were the only main streaming service at the time. Now that there's like 7 main ones now, pirating is back to where we started
Not necessarily a better product, but a more _convenient_ way to get it is how you beat piracy.
@nasolem wdym?
Steam takes 30% from each purchase while 10% - 15% would be more than reasonable but ok, 70% is probably still kinda good. But Spotify pays next to nothing back to the artist so fuck 'em, I'm gonna still buy CDs and merch to support my favorite bands. And yes, I know that with major labels bands won't see a dime from album sales until the invested amount gets back.
steam doesn't really do much, pirating is still totally worth it especially if you have a slow internet connection and are downloading repacks.
ahhh yes, this takes me back. I was around 14 when I used to illegally download music. I loved it.
