Yes, actually many latinamerican cities has a grid planified system applied as you can appreciate in historical downtowns like Buenos Aires, Mexico City or Lima. Also in many minor cities has a particular planification of the main square which many American towns also kept in mind during XIX century. A square/plaza or a little central park, in front of it a town hall or "civic center" (centro cívico) and main services as banks, shops, etc.
Which also, anyways, could be partially inspired in planned Roman street grids. If you investigate Roman cities maps, most of them have a similar grid system.
@@DSSaturiaXI I forgot about that. And yeah, my city also has a grid plans too because it was occupied by both Spanish and Americans (with the American-era expansion designed by Daniel Burnham himself).

Eugene InLaw it would be so nice if they could, but as it is TM:PE is way too intensive to add to the base game in it's entirety. I don't think they want to raise the base game requirements for everyone. @@Zosu22 it would be interesting if they increased the maximum car/pedestrian count but that would probably raise the requirements too. Could be an option with a slider.
Take a second look at Google Earth and you'll see that European cities do model themselves on grids. I put it rather: grids, but with regard for the topographical feauters.
It depends on the city. Some of the downtowns are still based on "the spaces in between the shops" circa Roman times. European cities can often have layers, almost like tree rings, showing the new trends in road design as time passed. Only the oldest American cities (eg Boston) have any of that.

Bad start? :P As soon as you said ”at first I’m gonna talk about ...” (about :50) there was that left turn busy looking intersection that had crossing IMMEDIATELY after that turn to block incoming traffic, so ..... NO! :D But other than that: Cool loking cities you do in general, and thanks for all these tutorials too! Keep ’em coming. And please DON’T put lots of roundabouts on European cities!! As our city planners are already putting way too much those on our REAL cities, so they might get false impression that anyone else than those city planners actually likes them! ... no one does! :/ And all is just a big scam as those bastards just want to save traffic light money for excessively using roundabouts. Like they don’t steal ebough of our money for them!? Our government uses only 1/10 of our traffic related taxes on road maintenance and infrasturcture, and that rest 9/10 is just plain robbery!
What I find kind of funny is that the European example he showed looked vibrant and pretty and then he switched to the American layout view and it just looked strangely depressing to see XD
I disagree. To me the European cities look like a complete mess that would be Hell to live in, whereas the grids look (buckle up for such a non-American concept) efficient. That said, the highways just smashing through old development are definitely depressing. In Europe they at least had the courtesy to carpet bomb each others' cities before undergoing infrastructure megaprojects.
Of course cities are grids when you build on a pool table. There are countless American cities that look wonky because they were built on uneven ground.
Australian cities are kind of similar to American cities with the exception of Hobart, Canberra and Darwin. The big cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have extensive freeway/motorway networks
Truthfully, players put way too much emphasis on road layout. As long as it's functional you can do anything you want. Real life cities aren't "interesting", "beautiful" or "boring" based on their road layout style. People don't visit Paris because of its quirky road layout. Nobody ever accused New York City or San Francisco of being boring. On the other hand, everybody seems to hate on American suburbs, which nobody ever accused of being gridded or interesting. It only matters to you, not your cims. Because the game's limit on vehicles is so low, even road hierarchy is optional. I've seen speed run megalopolises with no road hierarchy whatsoever, just the highways around the city and local streets. Also, contrary to prevailing opinion, you also don't need any mass transit to have a functional city. The same speed run megalopolises frequently don't have even buses or cargo railroads.
not game-related, but how do americans know where they are going... everything looks the same. Also that's pretty boring and depressing.. glad to live in europe for sure!
Old school, we would just use landmarks for short trips. "Go down the road about 3 miles, turn right at the Shell station, follow that road until you get to the pedestrian overpass and then take a left." Longer trips, break out the map and look for ramps, intersections or major buildings/features to guide your way. Street signs help in cities.
Grids follow a numerical street naming system, so "100 North and 500 West" is 1 street north of center street, and 5 streets west. It's actually pretty convenient if done properly
Chicago has a grid system that use #'s from a central point. Madison and State is 0(East/West)/0(North/South). So for example, I grew up at 103rd and Central in Oak Lawn, a suburb. I was 103 blocks south of Madison and 56 blocks west of State. Not too hard of a concept to understand once you know your street names and #'s
Great video, but it's not very practical for me. I design my cities for optimal traffic flow and overall efficiency; not aesthetics. Besides, it's not like anyone else sees them so it doesn't bother me that it doesn't mirror the cities you find on youtube.
