All of the criticism you stated is 100% true. The people defending this game are really grasping for straws when they try to defend the criticism brought up. They problems are real, it's just a matter of taste of whether or not you mind it or not. The later games are much better, I'm disappointed that you didn't review Ghouls and Ghosts for the Megadrive/et all. I love that game, I wish I had it back in the day on my Genesis.
What's more annoying about most of these flaws in the game is they are largely intentional. Remember, it was an *arcade* game so making it next to impossible for you to beat without putting more and more quarters in was a common practice. Which leads to all kinds of unfair difficulty.
The NES gameplay is kind of jittery and poorly programmed as well. It was a Micronics port (same people responsible for the lousy NES 1942) and not done by Capcom themselves. The problems with the port really become apparent when you play very smooth arcade original. I'm a bigger fan of Ghouls 'n Ghosts myself and the Genesis port of that is nearly flawless. Super GnG is technically impressive but it's just not quite as well designed (and suffers from some annoying slowdown which is murder in a GnG game).
I'm assuming the reason Tails Doll couldn't get out of the TV was because the only way out was to complete over a million of those fucking circuit puzzles from SAW
This and Battletoads tie for hardest NES, both for own reasons, Battletoads is a much better game though i have played through toads 5 times now, gng i could only stomach once, its like getting slapped over and over until the ending where you get slapped again. not fun.. but something attractive about it, probably the difficulty.
But Battletoads is, from what I've heard, a fun type of hard like Zelda II and Castlevania 1. It's not really hampered by terrible controls and bullshit enemy placement.
Giordan Diodato it really is. Everyone should play it to understand why people still use the term nintendo hard. Its rediculous but very beatable with wnough practice. I have been through it 5 times cuz its arguably my favorite game for nes. Its the design of the game which is so damn amazing every level you play is different. First lvl is beat em up style, second is going down a tunnel on a rope, third is riding down the turbo tunnel on speeder bikes. Etc the design is incredible. The japanese version is great and fair. The american version was built to make money. Still great though. I prefer over the japanese one cuz u can really test ur gaming mettle to the ultimate limit.
The AVGN was correct! The knife is just SO much faster. You can throw roughly twice the number of knives per unit time as you can javelins, and they both do one unit of damage. When you have a 'unicorn' (intended to be a cyclops, but mistranslated because of confusion over one horn versus one eye) requiring 9 or 10 hits walking toward you, being able to launch twice as many weapons in those couple seconds is VERY welcome.
List of thing GnG should've had 1.Time Limit Removal 2.A Health Meter (More than 2 hits) 3.Bosses take less hits 4.Weapon Balance 5.Enemy Balance 6.Redo Stage 6 if you don't have the shield 7.Use of Passwords and 8.A Difficulty Adjustment

Hard to believe this most classic of episodes is nearly 10 years old. Back in high school, gotta say this episode made my freshman year. Nearly 10 years later it's a timeless classic that I have on my halloween playlist every year. Just excellent!
It's funny that the princess says that your normal weapons won't work, you can actually do a cheat on the options menu to warp to the final boss (which my brother and I did constantly because this game is fucking hard) and what weapon does it give you by default? The Javelin.
12:19 Tails Doll: Wait, what does this mean? Johnny: The room was an illusion and a trap "devisut" by Satan. I need to go ahead dauntlessly and make rapid "progres". TD: You have to play the entire game again? J: Yep. TD: ...the princess can enjoy spending her time in Hell. Move on to the next game. Anything to avoid that never ending squealing... *vanishes* J: You're the boss. I'm dead. 😂

If it wasn’t for childhood trauma and rage reviews like this no one would ever care for that game. The sequels are much better, Johnny is accurate here.
i could be wrong about this, but i think johnny dislikes ghosts that respawn in random locations, there's a subtle hint about it about halfway through the video
According to 5:06, you need God-like reflexes....using shitty control sensitivity. HOW CAN THOSE BE PUT TOGETHER?!?!?!? Oh, and by the way, who else would love to see John review a game along with AVGN? That would be a dream come true.
I watched this when I was like 10, I remember. I was eating Taco Bell at the family computer. Such a strange memory for me, and it's the only SomecallmeJohnny video I've ever watched.
"When did the developers finally slap some f*ckin' sense into the enemy designer and to tell him to just to f*ckin' stop?!" That line kills me everytime. So much genuine anger.
I especially love the Mega drive ghouls & ghosts. Being able to throw upward & that sword weapon are seriously where it's at. I also love the hilariously cartoonish version of the G&G theme in the 1st stage & I fucking adore the theme song that they play for stage 2: Village of decay & Destruction. Even though I prefer the Arcade version as well as the C64 remix of the track, the Mega drive one is still really nice.
You especially deserve the title of Super Gaming Brother after beating the first Ghosts 'N Goblins game. No, scratch that, it should be Ultra Super-Stupendous Amazing Gaming Brother!
My favourite Johnny review, so funny. Kudos to you for beating this game, I doubt I'd be able to get past level 2 or 3 unless I spent days and days repeatedly playing.
I swear I'm the only one who grew up to love Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts. Like I was 4 when I first played it and while I was bad it still felt fair with what you've said in the review. I love it as much as Super Mario World, I played those 2 the MOST growing up and have become my 2 all-time favorite games.
+A Banana Well, excuse me for not having the time and skill for that. And to be fair, I didn't abuse save states until around Stage 3. Besides, it's still ridiculous even with save states...
Of course I'm going to die if I play it but I would persevere and beat it fair and square and not cheat like you. I couldn't stand playing 6-3 for the 69th time in Ninja Gaiden (NES) but I endured the pain and beat it. You should do the same.
This video will always hold a special place in my heart, it was kinda like the last SGB review, Johnny with his new cooler style taking on an old nemesis one last time, ultimately putting the SGB reviews to rest. Goodbye Tails Doll, you sadistic fuck
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, and Golden Axe were the first two games I've ever played. I had to close this review at 13 minutes because it looks even better then how I remembered it. I thank the you from four years ago for reminding this game exists.
Plus when the SGB reviewed themselves, Johnny said that the Tails Doll had run its course & doesn’t see a game that’ll make him return any time soon after the Ecco The Dolphin series.
"This isn't Megaman 1, this isn't zelda 2, this isn't even lost levels ... this is Ghost N' Goblins and this game will make you remember it's name" I couldn't say it better myself...
Johnny If you want to know the name of the levels in Super Ghouls and Ghosts, here they are. :) Stage 1: The Dead Place Area 1: The Haunted Graveyard Area 2: The Forest of Fear Boss: Cockatrice and its offspring Miniwing Stage 2: The Rotting Sea Area 1: The Graveyard of Ships Area 2: The Sea of Despair Boss: Storm Cesaris Stage 3: Vermillion Horror Area 1: The Crucible of Flame Area 2: The Towers of Molten Steel Boss: Death Crawler Stage 4: The Ghouls Stomach Area 1: The Ghouls Stomach Part 1 Area 2: The Ghouls Stomach Part 2 Boss: Hydra Stage 5: The Deep Chill Area 1: The Ice Forest Area 2: The Ice Walls Boss: Beruaroken Stage 6: The Castle of the Emperor Boss: Astaroth Stage 7: The Hallway of Ghouls Boss: Nebiroth Stage 8: The Throne Room Boss: Samuel (or Sardius in the English version)
The only way that I could ever beat Stage 3 is by AVGNing it up and hitting every one while it's BARELY on the screen, then running away like a bitch until they despawn. I even developed strategies for each one to help me run like a bitch and everything.
I am so glad the arcade version of Ghosts 'N Goblins didn't have the BS selective weapon immunity for the bosses like the NES version did. Kinda hope you tackle 'Resurrection' and maybe even the original Ghouls 'N Ghosts someday. Though I'm sure you're quite busy with your current schedule of marathons and I'm still looking forward to more of your Metroid marathon as of this post. ^___^
you know whats funny there is a ghosts and goblins reference in Project X Zone in which some characters have this conversation. "This place is of the ghouls and ghosts" "It feels like so many meaningless deaths" or something like that lol.
Anyone else thinks Tails Doll was talking about Crash? John has said that it is painfully annoying to 100% Crash 1, and Elliot being referenced might hint towards Crash 3. I dunno, just saying.
The nice thing about the bracelet is that it kills things much quicker. The red devils die in two hits from the thing. Edit: Upon further inspection I learned the bracelet also works similar to a shotgun. The closer your target is, the more damage the blast does.
John, you absolutely NEED to do a crossover with Linkara. Lord Vice teaming up with Tails Doll has to happen. Plus, I just wanna see 2 of my favourite reviewers team-up
I prefer the MegaDrive version, it just had a more appealing game design & bosses, it was the perfect balance of difficulty. It was hard but not overly punishing.

The PSP version is pretty awesome, he should check it out
Trevor Anthony super ghouls and ghosts enjoyable difficulty
8:33 - "I'd rather play Sonic 06 than slug through this unholy piece of programming." We all know how you feel about Sonic 06, Johnny.
congrats on 1 milli. here’s to many more!
This is probably my 3rd favorite video of yours Johnny, keep up the good work
I wish Tails Doll returned, he's a great Villain.
According to 5:06, you need God-like reflexes....using shitty control sensitivity. HOW CAN THOSE BE PUT TOGETHER?!?!?!?
Oh, and by the way, who else would love to see John review a game along with AVGN? That would be a dream come true.
Ooh! Ooh! Me!
to be honest the control isn't that bad
They kind of did a review of one of the Sonic movies recently. 🥴
I watched this when I was like 10, I remember. I was eating Taco Bell at the family computer. Such a strange memory for me, and it's the only SomecallmeJohnny video I've ever watched.
"When did the developers finally slap some f*ckin' sense into the enemy designer and to tell him to just to f*ckin' stop?!"
That line kills me everytime. So much genuine anger.
Ghosts N Goblins Ressuruction was announced at the Game Awards 2020. The visuals are amazing.
9:01
He sounds completely different when mad
Ghosts 'N Goblins: Get the knife.
Ghouls 'N Ghosts: Get the knife.
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts: Get the crossbow.
Its a good game but ghouls and ghosts on sega or super ghouls and ghosts are what the game intended to be im sure. Master pieces.
Tails Doll must be the work of an enemies stand.
Jojokes
VampireKatana NANI???
You especially deserve the title of Super Gaming Brother after beating the first Ghosts 'N Goblins game. No, scratch that, it should be Ultra Super-Stupendous Amazing Gaming Brother!
I need more Johnny/Tails Doll interactions!
$5 says the last game he reviews for the Tails Doll is I Wanna Be The Guy.
Pay up dude
You know what would make this game better? If it was made by the rainbow company. YOU KNOW what Rainbow Company I'm talking about
Laughing Joking Numbnuts.
Wow, it's hard to notice going one video at a time, but John's practically turned into a completely different reviewer over the years
TO beat Ghosts N Goblins: GET THE KNIFE!
Who else is here after the remake got announced
I am.
This video has almost a million views, I'm gonna watch it on repeat over and over again until you get there johny
14:41 HOLY SHIT, that was close!
I only beat Ghosts N' Goblins with save states...
+A Banana Well, excuse me for not having the time and skill for that. And to be fair, I didn't abuse save states until around Stage 3. Besides, it's still ridiculous even with save states...
My shame was lost a long time ago...
+Ness Prower Typical 12 year old kid who can't beat hard nes games so they rely on savestates, I hope you're proud of yourself.
As opposed to you, who can beat it on-camera without dying?...
Of course I'm going to die if I play it but I would persevere and beat it fair and square and not cheat like you. I couldn't stand playing 6-3 for the 69th time in Ninja Gaiden (NES) but I endured the pain and beat it. You should do the same.
3:00 When your college teacher assigns a 50 page essay that you need to email in just two days.
11 years later and this is still one of Johnny's best reviews.
"I'm looking forward to our last meeting."
I guess, that answers the question of no sign of Tails Doll these days.
Echo the Dolphin
Plus when the SGB reviewed themselves, Johnny said that the Tails Doll had run its course & doesn’t see a game that’ll make him return any time soon after the Ecco The Dolphin series.
"This isn't Megaman 1, this isn't zelda 2, this isn't even lost levels ... this is Ghost N' Goblins and this game will make you remember it's name"
I couldn't say it better myself...
11:19 Johnny has entered Sherlock mode
What ?
Johnny If you want to know the name of the levels in Super Ghouls and Ghosts, here they are. :)

Area 1: The Haunted Graveyard Area 2: The Forest of Fear Boss: Cockatrice and its offspring Miniwing
Stage 2: The Rotting Sea
Area 1: The Graveyard of Ships Area 2: The Sea of Despair Boss: Storm Cesaris
Stage 3: Vermillion Horror
Area 1: The Crucible of Flame Area 2: The Towers of Molten Steel Boss: Death Crawler
Stage 4: The Ghouls Stomach
Area 1: The Ghouls Stomach Part 1 Area 2: The Ghouls Stomach Part 2 Boss: Hydra
Stage 5: The Deep Chill
Area 1: The Ice Forest Area 2: The Ice Walls Boss: Beruaroken
Stage 6: The Castle of the Emperor Boss: Astaroth
Stage 7: The Hallway of Ghouls Boss: Nebiroth
Stage 8: The Throne Room Boss: Samuel (or Sardius in the English version)
In my opinion, Somecallmejohnnys best review! Love Johnny's insight and rage!
The only way that I could ever beat Stage 3 is by AVGNing it up and hitting every one while it's BARELY on the screen, then running away like a bitch until they despawn. I even developed strategies for each one to help me run like a bitch and everything.
19:09 Foreshadowing Ecco the Dolphin.
6:58 Those motherfuckers.........................
2:31, so johnny is a fine cheese?
Yal Rathol or a fine wine
Anyone else thinks Tails Doll was talking about Crash? John has said that it is painfully annoying to 100% Crash 1, and Elliot being referenced might hint towards Crash 3. I dunno, just saying.
Alex the Bezerker It was Ecco. Good guess, though!
Ahhhh... the nastolgia. Whenever I wanna good time, I know where to find it XD
Plus, I just wanna see 2 of my favourite reviewers team-up
Anyone notice every time he reaches a milestone like the 50th johnny vs video the background of the thumbnail changes?
Michael Rhett
I did too
I prefer the MegaDrive version, it just had a more appealing game design & bosses, it was the perfect balance of difficulty. It was hard but not overly punishing.
The game may be a poorly age coin eater but hey the main theme is bumping
“Don’t you hate it when you get cock blocked by the Prince of darkness himself?”
Underrated Johnny quote.
