Death having a scythe harps back to a forgotten term. "Reaping fields of hay." Then reimagined as a spirit that uses the likeness of the tool to reap souls.
This has to be my all-time favourite set of 'James and Mike Mondays' episodes. I'd love to see you guys go through the Genesis version of Ghouls 'n' Ghosts/Ghosts 'n' Goblins.
James.....mike......just so you know, when I'm having a horrible, stressful depressing ass day I always know I can fall back on watching your videos to put a smile on my face. Thank you.
Yes, the scythe and sickle are tools for gathering or reaping. Death is personified as the Grim Reaper or the "gatherer of souls". So, Death is depicted as a dark cloaked figure (often a skeleton underneath the cloak) with a scythe because it (he) is reaping the souls of humans in death.
This game was legendary back in the day, I remember playing it when I was 6 or so and the graphics being like nothing I've ever seen. It was also terrifying at the time for a kid. The coffins coming up really upset me for some reason and I asked for someone to put a different game in, and they put in Star Fox. An I thought that was incredible for a console game since I had been brought up on PC gaming and we only owned an NES and SMB1 and SMB3. That same year Star Fox came out, we got Aces Over Europe for PC which I was much more interested in since it was about WW2 planes and utilized a flight stick. I only recently re-discovered Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and remembered it from my youth.
I love that Spelunky acknowledges the ridiculous videogame spikes and only actually kills you if you FALL on them, but if you approach them from the side you can just walk through them. I wish more games did that.
Imagine if there were a GHOULS AND GHOSTS movie where you THINK you just saw the ending, hero Knight is standing tall as the end credits roll and you see "CONGRATULATIONS..YOU HAVE JUST SEEN THE END BUT IN ORDER THE SEE THE TRUE ENDING....YOU MUST VIEW THIS MOVIE AGAIN IN REVERSE" just like how this sadistic game forces you to play a 2nd time to see the true ending.I'd be fuck that!Haha!!
Except that they didn't do that on Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. It was something about finding some shit to know the real ending. Dunno, I never used a guide to beat it.
Cinemassacre Mike, a reaper is one who harvests the crop (sometimes with a scythe). The "Grim" Reaper is supposed to "harvest" souls for the dead. So that's why in Simon's Quest, you can just walk past him, because he's too busy plowing the field for Dracula.
Yes, that's what reaper means! I love these guys and their videos, but that part was so hard to watch. I felt like banging my head against the wall; I just wanted to jump through the screen and tell them. How can you not figure it out? This is not something I was ever specifically taught, I just thought it was obvious given the reaper's name and tool. C'mon guys.
The scythe was used to harvest wheat at the end of the season (end of its life) and it would leave the wheat cut evenly across. (symbolizing how all are equal after death)
Nothing like watching 2 guys torture themselves with Super Ghoul's 'n Ghosts! You guys are a lot of fun to watch. I like how much you get into it, even when it's the other person playing you get mad right along with them. Great stuff.
I guess the scythe on Grim Reaper symbolizes how he harvests souls. And some people really did use them as weapons if they had nothing else. Even the 1800s.
***** I don't think it was ever common but it was used when nothing else was available. In Poland they reattached the blade to make it more like a glaive.
The Grim Reaper wields a scythe because he reaps souls like men do crops. To reap is to "cut or gather (a crop or harvest)." So the grim reaper is literally a GRIM reaper.
I gotta say, after watching your videos after watching so many other TH-camrs: your volume levels are perfect. Not too loud, but I can hear everything perfectly at minimum volume. One thing I wish gamers would do is learn some side compression techniques to better showcase game music during pauses. An automated process to make editing simple, while keeping levels perfect. Audio is my passion, and I feel it's overlooked on a lot of channels. My preferred DAW, Studio One has a great video player to sync up audio tracks to video. Love all your work, and always come back to these 3 episodes when I need some long spooky themed gameplay. Can't wait to see future projects from ya.
Likely won't read this, but I imagine that the idea of the scythe and the dead comes from the idea that, the grim reaper harvests souls... and the scythe is used to harvest grain. My guess would be, that early agricultural communities envisioned death as a natural part of life... so the reaper, has his season too.. when he harvests the dead or souls.. that it has its own harvest...
It actually came from the weapon called a scythe which was a modified version of the farming tool a sickle it was smaller and used to rips weapons away from your opponents. Ninjas and assassins used these which they were basically a symbol of death themselves so the weapons were used for the grimm reaper.
Benny2.0 That's not correct at all. Did you just take a wild guess and decide it was true? I'm wondering because you gave such a long and specific answer even though it was wrong.
The Grim Reaper is a harvester of souls. The scythe was a tool used for harvesting grain which is also known as reaping. That is why it became the symbolic tool for the Grim Reaper.
Man, PJ, one of my favorite speedrunners was working on this game forever. He is godly using the torch (which does the most damage and the quickest when used to it's maximum potential), but even he could never get really that close to putting a torch-run in the books... The time savings would've been massive. Deathless isn't the impossible achievement for this game. It's actually completing it without taking damage would be ideal. Oh, btw, the speedrunners all do the 2 loops, there aren't 1-loop runs, gotta do both for the ending. they do it in about 40 mins give or take. I'd go pull up the actual WR (it's below 40 mins i'm practically certain), but I don't remember who even has it right now so it would be more work than it usually i for me to link the speedruns, normally I have a good idea who holds it, but no clue here right now. Maybe later on I'll reply again. If you see a reply here from me, it is because I've found it to share alright guys. adios (I'll try to figure out the craziest categories that have completed runs too... ususally interesting stuff), Later.
Right on! It's pretty damn obvious. He's not called the Reaper for nothing. Not to mention a reaper is also a machine for harvesting grain. Heck, reaper is also another word for scythe, and all other updates and inventions that does the same, so there you go.
Awesome. I'm TERRIBLE at this game, so it's pretty cool watching you guys tackle it. I must say that I wish I was better at this game-- or, at least, more patient with it. There's a lot of neat stuff that I missed out on due to my lack of skill. The rotating room, for example, is comparable to (though much harder than) the similar area in Super Castlevania IV. I had seen pictures of this in EGM way back when, but never saw it in real time until now. Then there's the really creepy stage settings; fleshy, gross, appropriate. Of course, there's also seeing all the stuff that would almost definitely kill me, over and over and over again, until I might have snapped my SNES controller in frustration. For me, this is a perfect Let's Play game, and I've really enjoyed watching you both tackle it so far. I'm also really liking the banter between you in this part. It's reminiscent of what gaming was like for me with friends back in the SNES era; we took turns playing games to their endings, and we almost always talked about really dumb stuff... most of which usually made all of us laugh. As I've noted on your other videos, they really bring back memories of what it was like playing games with buddies, where having fun was equally as important as playing and/or beating a game. That's what means a lot to me, and why I'm here almost every week, leaving mile-long comments. These videos really hit home for me and my nostalgia, and I really appreciate them.
Peter Skerritt I've never made it too far in this game before, mainly because I've never owned it, so I definitely feel you. I also wish I was great at Ghosts 'N Goblins and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, but they're hard!... Maybe one day.
I have noticed on many of these videos that despite being smart individuals, James and Mike lack a bit on general knowledge. This is a pretty good example of that.
VixXstazosJOB I don't think it's general knowledge that a scythe is a harvesting tool. I'm more surprised that since they actually know it's a harvesting tool they couldn't make the connection :)
I actually really enjoyed that game I rented it back when I was a kid and it was so great to be able to be what would typically be in enemy and most games.
The term reap is used when farmers reap rye or crops in fields. Grim is an ominous term that is often used for misfortune. The Grim Reaper idea came started during the Black Plague, when people were dropping like flies. It was as if Death itself was reaping them. Hence, the Grim Reaper
If there was just a funny moments across all the episodes 19:54 cracks me up. Its quite the build up there are many sections where the map music is played in isolation all over this video so when that moment happens it’s hilarious.
The reason in actuality why the scythe was adopted as deaths weapon was during the black death people said they saw a man in a black cloak outside of town before the black death game and he was holding a scythe and a lantern which put out gas. Obviously it became a myth due to that. People were paranoid or lying, but it became deaths weapon.
how else do you sync music on it? As far as I remember, it required iTunes to do any syncing of ANYTHING....now granted, i've not owned an iPhone since the iPhone 4....
Just jailbreak that shit and use any of the alternatives to syncing on Cydia. I usually just use scp and Bridge to add to library. Frankly, I'm having more trouble making Android aware of uploads and playing via Bluetooth than I ever had with iOS. Decide to abandon Apple after it's planed obsolency bit me in the ass and to escape from the hassle that is updating a jail broken device.
The Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts James & Mike trilogy is the best I think. I am rewatching these episodes for the 6th times, and I am still laughing my ass off most of the times on what you guys talking about.
It is a good weapon. The only problem I have with it is that when you upgrade it, the fireballs can just circle around your target not even hitting it, forcing you to wait for it to hit before firing another shot
Little do they know that the torch is actually the best weapon in the game since it calculates damage by frames. :0 But who cares. It's just a game. ^^
But "get the knife" is still the best strategy in this game too. It's fast, allows 3 on screen at once, goes through enemies when you have bronze armour+, does good damage and does max damage when done after a double jump, has the most useful magic too.
It actually is the best in the game because of it's power. Once you have gold armor and the upgraded shield, you can just keep charging the shield power over and over; most speed runners use the torch, but the knife is also a viable speed run weapon.
Ha, poor James and Mike, they suffer for us and people give them so much shit for the scythe stuff ^^ I knew they were going to get reaped (huhu) in the comments section for that. For some reason, I was more bothered with James not knowing what a Harpy was in the Super Castlevania 4 video last time. That was weird as hell.Such a classic enemy in many games (among other things). Here he recognizes a hydra, no problem. Oh well I'm rambling about small stuff too now haha, thanks for the video and years of amusement and nostalgia guys! Randy
The idea for the Grim Reaper & his Scythe come from the days of the Bubonic Plague. There were often reports made by villagers & townspeople of a figured wearing a black robe, often seen standing in fields, swinging what appeared to be a scythe. Only thing is, there was said to be some sort of black mist coming from the place where the blade would be. The villagers & townspeople often said that, if you see that guy in your fields, the plague was on its way. And thus the term "Grim Reaper" was coined for that guy. Later in the course of human society, the figure known as the "Grim Reaper" became synonymous with any depiction of death.
It has more to do with the soul being harvested (reaped) like a crop would be. The crops in this sense are the souls and the grim reaper comes to harvest so new life can be "planted."
Nick Vla Turbo Tunnel is challenging, but after half a dozen continues you'll get the hang of it. I remember beating even the snake pit as a kid, it takes practice but once you memorize it it's not that bad. Think the furthest I've got to as a kid was that Clinger Winger (the level where you try to out-race some sort of portal thing). Good lord now THAT is a fucking difficult level, way more than Turbo Tunnel.
mrkraz I seem to recall reading somewhere that the turbo tunnel is actually bugged such that it cannot be completed in two player mode. Maybe that's just a myth, though, I don't remember where I heard that.
It's what they get for having iDevices. I think APPLE is a backronym these days. Not sure what the the LE stands for yet, but I'm quite sure the APP is All Peripherals Proprietary.

The reason the grim reaper uses the scythe is the imagery of him "harvesting" the living. It's a symbolic thing more than a legitimate weapon.
The Sythe makes perfect sense as the weapon for the reaper Harvesting wheat=Harvester of souls.

The Grim Reaper is a harvester of souls. The scythe was a tool used for harvesting grain which is also known as reaping. That is why it became the symbolic tool for the Grim Reaper.

Step 3. Get the f****** knife
Or the crossbow. The crossbow might actually be better.
It is a good weapon. The only problem I have with it is that when you upgrade it, the fireballs can just circle around your target not even hitting it, forcing you to wait for it to hit before firing another shot

Talking about weapons, I wait until the last level to get the bracelet. With crossbow magic, finding all the chests is easy.
That's one of the reasons I like the crossbow
...but then that's why they call him "the grim *reaper*": he's harvesting/reaping people like wheat, rather than actual wheat
Animation is @ 6:35
One of the greatest game series of all time
Super ghouls n ghosts is a classic! Love that game
Little do they know that the torch is actually the best weapon in the game since it calculates damage by frames. :0 But who cares. It's just a game. ^^
Sounds like it gotten significantly better in the sequel.
It's harder to use though. Dagger is best all round.
You guys should play Demon's Crest too !
You two thinking about playing Demons Crest for SNES this October??? :D Please!
Yes!
Well, October is over, but still yes.
Wow, I remember playing this game when i was a kid. The music alone brings back so much nostalgia.
"When in doubt, get the knife".
I owned this game as a kid an its still a SUPER favorite of mine!
Next week you guys should play Demon's Crest.
Randy
Earning money by playing cool games and talking casually over it is suffering?
DOSRetroGamer
James plays mostly shitty games, that's the AVGN's shtick (and since Mike helps him for these reviews...).
Really? I found that interesting, thanks
thanks for the info. interesting
TIL, love me some trivia!
It has more to do with the soul being harvested (reaped) like a crop would be. The crops in this sense are the souls and the grim reaper comes to harvest so new life can be "planted."
You harvest hay with a scythe. The grim reaper harvest souls, Christ lol.
i love im not the only adult that makes weird faces when struggling in the game and screams at the TV
Grim reaper: reaper of souls like a human who is a reaper of wheat. Kinda obvious actually....
You guys should play "Legacy of the Wizard" I think you might enjoy it.
I still think you guys should do Starfox 64 (with the rumble pak because that thing goes nuts at times).
this was really good game. Still one of my favorites. Too bad we dont get new games like these anymore.
This game was just sooo satisfying to play along with Super Castlevania and Super Mario World.
Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is a sequel to Ghouls 'n' Ghosts.
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is a sequel to Ghosts 'n' Goblins.
Such a dissapointing comment. Totally undermined any knowledge they may have.
I always picked Toad in Super Mario Kart, cuz he had the best handling (IIRC).
nsignific
Same here, or Koopa. Fastest by far were Bowser and Kong but man, did their handling suck!
WOW...James also didn't beat the Turbo Tunnel in NES Battletoads? Glad I'm not the only one.
Its ok friend...... NO ONE I repeat NO ONE has beaten the turbo tunnel
Nick Vla Hi, I'm NO ONE. Pleased to meet you.
Nick Vla I did, with one hand. There's a video on my chanel of me doing it.
Nick Vla
Turbo Tunnel is challenging, but after half a dozen continues you'll get the hang of it. I remember beating even the snake pit as a kid, it takes practice but once you memorize it it's not that bad. Think the furthest I've got to as a kid was that Clinger Winger (the level where you try to out-race some sort of portal thing). Good lord now THAT is a fucking difficult level, way more than Turbo Tunnel.
mrkraz
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the turbo tunnel is actually bugged such that it cannot be completed in two player mode. Maybe that's just a myth, though, I don't remember where I heard that.
I still play this today - Absolute Classic !!!!
Death is the HARVESTER of souls, that's why he's got a scythe. : ) Good Video! Can't wait for part 2.
Technically Super GNG is a sequal to Ghouls N Ghosts which was for the Genesis and other consoles and the Arcade.
So you just wanna charge or update your phone and not deal with iTunes? Android. You're welcome.
Apple. Not even once.
You can do that with iPhones.
Or charge the iPhone without opening iTunes.
Do a little research.
It's what they get for having iDevices. I think APPLE is a backronym these days. Not sure what the the LE stands for yet, but I'm quite sure the APP is All Peripherals Proprietary.
XH1927 Says the guy with an Android icon....
+Bridget Orozco Lol android users are hipsters? Apple Inc is the very definition of hipsters
Epic iTunes rant, so true !
3:06 just check out the look of utter defeat on Mike's face. You can literally see his soul being crushed.
