+Hector Gonzalez I think it took about a minute and a half... I could make a sandwich, go get some juice, hell, you could even go to the garage and fold a load of laundry in the time it takes.
Yeah... unlike Sailor Moon where it's every god forsaken episode (I am sorry Sailor Uranus, I am not worthy anymore to be a fangirl) but it took up 2-3 minutes each. At least Metal Sonic doesn't take as long as a magical girl
Addressing Shadow's memory loss issue, while Rougue might be a jackass for not explaining anything to him, the rest of the main characters have a good reason. For one thing, team Chaotix never even knew who they were before the game. E-123 Omega was probably just built, or at least after SA2 finished. Sonic and his gang didn't encounter Shadow in this game until that battle at frog forest, and they had no idea that Shadow had amnesia. They even comment in the game things like "Shadow, don't you remember us?" or some stuff like that, so they're just as confused as Shadow.
I will say Rouge might have a bit of a good reason not to tell Shadow what she knew about him. How do you tell your friend that he tried to kill everyone and expect anyone to feel good about it? I wouldn't wanna burden them with that knowledge.
TheDiego908 especially when it's the last part of the level when you're on an A rank run. I remember one time when I was playing as Team Dark in Final Fortress, on an incredible A rank run and that last rail the leads to the platform with the self destruct button, I only go and fucking miss it and die don't I!
I feel like people don’t realize you don’t need to touch the analog stick in level 14 when you’re shot to the next rail but there is one where you need to move the control stick a little because when I didn’t I died somehow
I feel bad for Big. Heroes showed he could be an awesome and hilarious power guy that can do damage as well as provide comic relief by non-challantly beating things with a fishing rod and just generally being a doofus, but his pointless and unfun playable debut completely wrecked his reputaion, and the eventual edgefests followed by the "friends" exodus killed any potential he had.

Still the control was just so unbearable; I couldn't get the final chaos emerald until a few months ago; I finally defeated Metal Sonic, I got a C rank, still upset about that, but as soon as I fully complete the game, I found out that I got to go for all the A ranks and I was DONE. The control and the special stages are just horrible; I mean come on, the control is slippery, it's hard to move the characters, the bombs are everywhere, I can't really collect many of the orbs to speed up, I just felt so angry when I lost the Emerald. I, eventually, collected the chaos emeralds with each different team; though in the end, I got the final emerald with Team Rose. Still, it doesn't beat the fact that it took me 5 years to get the chaos emeralds in Sonic Heroes.

I could genuinely watch his sonic reviews forever... i have lost count of how many times i have watched his adventure series, this video, shadow and 06
Team Rose confronting Team Sonic was actually my least favorite part of the game, since the real Amy would never attack Sonic unless he unintentionally angered her like in a cutscene from "Sonic Riders" or an episode of "Sonic X".
I totally agree with johnny on the special stages. As a matter of fact im playing time rose on bingo highway. AND I SWEAR TO GOD I FEEL LIKE IVE DONE THIS 20 TIMES IN AN HOUR ITS TICKING ME OFF.
Having 100%'d Heroes a week ago, the thing I found for the Special Stages is that Team Rose actually isn't as helpful as expected. I swear that they're slower in the Special Stages than Sonic or Dark without having tighter control, and I found for a lot of stages I ended up taking longer to get the Emerald by attempting multiple times with Rose before getting others in 1-2 tries with Sonic/Dark while working on their A-Ranks. The other trick I found was you have to play weird with the Dash. I see people either mash or hold the button, both of which cause issues. Holding causes the Emerald to Rubberband Speed up if you can't maintain it to grab it quickly, while mashing doesn't pick up much speed since it keeps resetting your momentum. What worked best was getting a rhythm going to boost as soon as the old one's momentum wore off. (Note: None of this makes the stages good or tolerable, these were just tricks I experienced that made them easier)
JOHNNY: Still made a nice Christmas gift though right Eliot? ELIOT: *gives Johnny the middle finger* ME: Yeah if someone gave me the PS2 version of Sonic heroes, I'd flip them off too.
I honestly don't get the heat for the PS2 version. I didn't encounter nearly yhe amount of issues everyone else says they encountered. And I'm well aware of inherent flaws. It didn't stop me from enjoying the game, the fucking chaos emeralds and the final story notwithstanding.
@@esmooth919 I think it mainly stems from technical issues. Because the PS2 wasn't as powerful as the XBOX and GameCube, multiplatform games were often the worst on the PS2, except for "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie" game which had the worst of it on GameCube. However with "Sonic Heroes", I think it just stems from it being a last minute semi rushed port. Is the PS2 version playable? Sure. But if you have a Wii, just get the GameCube version since it runs much better, or if you have an XBOX 360, get the XBOX version as it is compatible with the 360 and doesn't have any noticeable compatibility issues. As for the PC version? I have no idea how that version turned out.
I agree with you. The repetition and the fact that this game's controls are...well, basically total ASS...really messes up the fun factor. I still haven't finished this game, and I've had it for about 7-8 years. Those damn special stages must have been designed by Satan...or a vengeful Alex Kid.
i love the concept of a pissed off alex kid spitefully posessing iizuka to do the shit he's done over the past however long it's been since he took centrestage
This is my all time favorite Sonic game, but I do know its flaws. Casino Park and Bingo Highway have great themes, but Jesus Christ the pinball portions are HELLISH. I actually LOVE Rail Canyon though. The special stages? All I have to say is this: once you get all the Chaos Emeralds, NEVER GO BACK! It is GRUELING! There are other things that I do agree with already covered in the video, but other than that, I still enjoy Heroes better than Adventure 1 and 2
Agreed. This is still my favorite Sonic game, despite the flaws, which were the same as yours. I honestly like going back to this game more, even though I think SA1 did a better job.
This is my second favorite 3d Sonic game, the first being Adventure 2. Yeah, the speed characters are slippery as fuck, but once you figure out how to control them properly, you'll have a very enjoyable experience.
XxPandomRandomxX Youre lying so hard bro.Ok then, what do you hate in SA2 and what do you like in Sonic 06.Music doesent count since every Sonic game has great music
Stages have always been based on score, and Team Dark in Heroes leans especially heavy on points in the stage compared to the Time Bonus in old games or even other teams like Sonic. Gold Robots and Enemy combos mean it's entirely possible to get all the points for the A Rank without counting any time bonus on Final Fortress specifically.
I honestly actually really did the PS2 version pretty well despite the bad collision detection, the grinding controls were much better because the PS2 controller had a good layout for 8 year old me
I still have the ps2 version and play the game sometimes. And to be honest, the control in the ps2 was better than the gamecube and xbox version, since the ps2's sonic heroes version was sloppy, the control feels better. Its not strict like the gamecube and xbox. I could easily turn and not really had alot of trouble during the rail switching and speed character's ..... Speed. Tho im disappointed it has lame circle shadows, 30fps and some graphical glitches. But the control was better.
Well he never said it wasn't enjoyable. It just has more glitches, and collision detection issues. I own all three. The GameCube it the best, but the Xbox version is a very close second.
"...he's still transforming... ...he's STILL TRANSFORMING! Did he beat Sonic '06's load time? There's no way he beat Sonic '06's loading time... ... Lord, have mercy, HE BEAT SONIC 'O6's LOAD TIME!"
Hopefully I'm not alone in thinking they should remake Heroes for Xbox One and PS4. They remade the Adventure titles, why not this one? They could even fix up the control and polish it up. It could turn out nice.
Oh. Well, the way I see it, it makes logical sense. Heroes is getting that finalized coating of nostalgia and making a port of the game will grant quite the number of sales. After all, I'm willing to bet many people bought the ports of the Adventure titles based on sheer nostalgia. I think it would be cool having that in consideration, but I wouldn't say it's a port that NEEDS to happen.
Remake of Sonic Heroes is a really great idea (but let's add to potential XBox One and PS4 also PC version :)), personally I think that this game deserves for more attention (and better reputation) than it's currently have. It's true that necessity to finish all 4 scenarios to have final boss is a bit painful and that control can be troublesome (it's trange, but IMO I had better feeling of control if I've used keyboard or some "classic" gamepad with D-pad)... But on the other hand it created nice and consistent gameplay style (varied with three type of characters), in my opinion WAY better than spoiled with irritating "find the emerald shard" in Sonic Adventure 2. Well, at this moment the biggest "remake" thing you can have is to obtain PC version and use HD mod (I've used it, it's only increasing screen res, but it makes noticeable difference).
There is always the PC version that came out a while later. You can play it at higher resolutions than the consoles up to 60FPS, along with some extra desktop backgrounds and animated cursors. Plus, they seemed to iron out some of the glitches, if memory serves correctly.
This is still my third favorite Sonic game, and I found a lot of the issues he had with it easily surmountable. Also I like the Sonic and Dark stages best because of their length. It’s more time I get to spend in the level. The Special Stage controls do suck, though.
I own the PS2 version, and it was fun when I first played it. But it got old after a while because I moved to Sonic Riders. I'm only 15, yet I soon realized the game was too bugged and generally not very fun on the PS2. 1) The camera is a piece of crap. 2) The collisions and movement had me slam into corners and walls far too often. 3) The cannon mechanic was cool, except some cannons would not launch me towards an area of progression. This made me very mad. 4) Load times were annoyingly long as well. 5) Personally, I could only beat Team Rose as a kid because the game was not good at showing me where it wants me to go when avoiding the rising energy escape levels on teams Dark and Sonic, and Chaotix was too boring and tedious to stay interested. 6) The game has aged very poorly (on the PS2) because of its bugs and glitches and awful camera and cannon mechanic.
The Gabenuel i never had most of these problems my load times are about 5 seconds though i can agree with the first 2 it never stopped me from playing the game i actually played it 2 days ago and i noticed i had 29 hours in that game lol
Raiden2421 Haha, nice! Like I said, I enjoyed it when i was younger. But going back to it today is almost personal torture. We just had different luck.
I've been watching you for a while. I remember this episode ha 😅 Your retrospective style is timeless. I wish you and yours well. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment.
"I really want to like Sonic Heroes. I really do." This one line perfectly encapsulates my feelings for Sonic Heroes. The level design is good, the level aesthetics are good, the music is good, but the one thing that you can't afford to fuck up, the controls, is complete ass.
My only complaint for this game is Flight formation. I should be able to control Tails/Cream/Rouge/Charmy solo on the ground, be a bit faster and use their solo attacks, while retaining the standard flight formation and thunder shoot while on air.
Yeah, its a bit jarring, I was playing Team Sonic and I had Knuckles and Sonic on switches so I was able to control Tails solo. It felt right, like I wanted to have that option all the time.
I'll always remember my first time beating this game, 11 years old sitting on my bedroom floor during my first year of highschool and my mum telling me I'll one day grow up and stop playing sonic. 8 years later and I'm still looking forward to the new releases
Johnny: "Oh I'm sorry, random Shadow robot... Don't you just HATE when you find a robotic copy of yourself just... lying on the floor for no reason whatsoever?" Me: "I KNOW RIGHT?!"
4:31 I know that that's a long-ass transformation sequence, but I get the feeling, like most anime, every section of the transformation is supposed to be happening at the same time, which in real time should only take a few seconds to do
Agreed. Hope Johnny will bring it back again in a future review. I would love it if he put it in his Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed review, during the part where he talks about the extremely difficult missions in World Tour, like Traffic Attack, or some levels, like Chilly Castle & Burning Depths. I HATED these race tracks.
It would be cool if knuckles was as strong as sonic is fast. Like if everyone elses special skill was as insane as sonics speed so then they actually feel like they matter to the game.
OH MY GOD!! The woman who voiced Amy in this game sounds IDENTICAL to the woman who voices the black haired girl in Atomic Betty! That is some weird shit right there.
I was just waiting for you to talk about the special stages. Man as a kid I used to hate these stages and we're never able to get all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
supernitendex7 There's a lot of control quirks that really alleviate issues people may have. I can't say it means it's perfect but the control really is something you can get used to with few problems.
Was originally going to be Sonic Adventure 3 but the team changed the name to Sonic Heroes in a bid to attract new fans to the game franchise. There was originally going to be an "F" rank, but ended up getting cut out of the final game While playing as Shadow or Omega, if you use the first-person camera to look at Rouge, she will occasionally turn her head and wink at you.
8:45 To perform the Rocket Accel correctly, you need to hold down the button bring everyone behind you. Once everyone is behind you, let go of the button and quickly press the button one more time again for another boost. This is also explained in the game's Tutorial.
I loved this game back in the day. The controls never bothered me. The cheap deaths did but I was able to look past them and still have fun. I would even say it's as great as the classic games which I played years before. For me this and the first three games will always be some of the greatest games of my childhood.
I, for the life of me, could NOT complete the special stages with Team Rose. It may be faster to retry, but the emerald goes too fast. Want my advice? Do it with Team Dark. They move MUCH faster in the special stage. Their levels might be longer, but I was able to get each emerald on my first try, even after many slip-ups and running into bombs.
Team dark is harder than Team Sonic and the same speed so do it with Team Sonic. Also do it when you first play the stage, rather than waiting til after beating them all to re try them for the emeralds
It's one of those things where I can see how they cause problems, they just didn't bother me in particular. Similar to how Johnny assesses 06's controls in his review.
+William White The characters all play the same and suffer the same issues, like the speed controls for every speed character. I would love this game much better, if it was just Team Sonic only.
William White Well seeing how Team Sonic levels are long enough as it is, the game would be long enough for a Sonic game. The fact that the game needs to be as long as it was, is proof of padding. They could again just have Team Sonic or at the very least, make all the Teams just optional and not have to do the other teams to beat the game. I didn't need to play as Tails or Knuckles in Sonic 3 And Knuckles to fully complete, so why do i need to do it here?
Wait... it took Metal Sonic longer to transform into Metal Overlord than it takes to load something in Sonic 06?! WHAT THE HELL?!

Yeah except the minute shadow didn't answer yes they should have explained it.
Kye Dysarthria Shadow also had long record of being a dick before this game, so, you know, could just be evil again.
Rouge however really had no excuse outside of one line from sa2 that admittedly felt forced at the time

ELIOT: *gives Johnny the middle finger*
ME: Yeah if someone gave me the PS2 version of Sonic heroes, I'd flip them off too.
Yup
PS2 version is better than you think
@@erikstensaas1202
It's flaws are over exaggerated, but I definitely think it's the worst version to play.
21:13 TIME TO GET SERIOUS.
nice profile pic lol.

Game controls fine. Git gud.
My first Sonic Game :')
same here
my was sonic 2
B) This thread still goin?
Probably. Eh, I'm down with it.
Always do.
I honestly like going back to this game more, even though I think SA1 did a better job.
fuck that, Sonic adventure 1 is the best
Looks like we have an angry fanboy!
Me too!
Look who's talking! XD
This is my second favorite 3d Sonic game, the first being Adventure 2. Yeah, the speed characters are slippery as fuck, but once you figure out how to control them properly, you'll have a very enjoyable experience.
I agree.
I love Sonic Heroes as well. It's my second favourite 3D Sonic game, my favourite being a tie being Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Colors.
XxPandomRandomxX You like Sonic 06?WTF
luka stojanovic Yeah, I do. And I hate SA2
XxPandomRandomxX Youre lying so hard bro.Ok then, what do you hate in SA2 and what do you like in Sonic 06.Music doesent count since every Sonic game has great music
The Last Stage with Team Dark took me 20 minutes and I got the rank A XD.
***** maybe its the score
Most sonic games are ranked based on your score. Low score equals E rank. High score equals A rank. (later games S rank.)
Is it just me, or does it kinda look like Shadow is looking up Amy's skirt on the character select screen?
Damn. This video is almost 5 years old. Feels like just yesterday I would come back from school eagerly hoping Johnny would release a new review
Now is 9 years. How does that make you feel?
+Talal Shumais I never played or owned the ps2 version but the GameCube version is 10x better.
The PC version anyone?
holy shit this video hit 1 million views just goes to show how good john's reviews are :)
Wahey! It's thanks to him I decided to try Arkham Asylum and City. MONEY WELL SPENT!
4:51 Still one of the best jokes at the expense of the Sonic franchise *to this day!*
They will never fucking do that.
I rather have a sequel to it that improve everything in the game.
Tails: Want some more
Johnny: GAHH I HATE THAT LINE!!!!
Sub Zero The Ice Ninga thanks for repeating what was in the video 👍
i thought the teams did have certain moves that were different from other teams, like espio's invisibility or amy's piko piko hammer glide thing
***** Everything, you talked about the overall gameplay, he talked about gameplay.
I love how Sonic 06 loads much longer than the other three games during Metal Sonic's transformation sequence.
Believe it or not, Sonic Heroes is what made me the Sonic the Hedgehog fan that I am today.
Same, I was one, but this game made me a huge fan
***** Yeah! Although I do think there are plenty of other better Sonic games to get, But I have the most nostalgic memories with this one.
A Studios
me too :3 love that game, still have it somewhere
eli gonzalez Hmm...Bumber. :( Consider me jealous if you used to be one of those Gamecube owners who owned Super Smash bros Melee on your collection
eli gonzalez Why am I the only Gamecube owner that hasn't played/owned that game yet?
This is still my third favorite Sonic game, and I found a lot of the issues he had with it easily surmountable. Also I like the Sonic and Dark stages best because of their length. It’s more time I get to spend in the level. The Special Stage controls do suck, though.
You know a transformation sequence is too long when it takes longer than a Sonic 06 loading screen.
Jokes on you, I got all chaos emeralds with team sonic.
Okay, I learned apparently I'm the only person in the world who doesn't mind the PS2 version of Sonic Heroes.
I never really found any issues with the PS2 version, except those special stages still haven't beaten this game because of how bullshit they are.
i dont mind it either
I remember this episode ha 😅
Your retrospective style is timeless. I wish you and yours well. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment.
18:38 that perfectly sums up how the special stages work in sonic generations.
"I really want to like Sonic Heroes. I really do."
This one line perfectly encapsulates my feelings for Sonic Heroes. The level design is good, the level aesthetics are good, the music is good,
but the one thing that you can't afford to fuck up, the controls, is complete ass.
Johnny:” She wants to physically assault Sonic just so she can marry him?”
Me: Apparently
6:41 Don't fuck with Amy when it comes to Sonic. Or she will kill you.
Johnny: "Oh I'm sorry, random Shadow robot... Don't you just HATE when you find a robotic copy of yourself just... lying on the floor for no reason whatsoever?"
Me: "I KNOW RIGHT?!"
Topaz Lynx Wednesday’s are a pain for me due to this. I have to do this weird duel with my duplicate which wastes my time.
Still a great Christmas gift, right Elliott?
*Elliott flipping Johnny off*
I love you.
My favorite moment.
"I'M FALLING!"
Me: hmmmmm, yes it seems like the floor here is made out of floor
Big didn't lose Froggy, Metal Sonic kidnapped him.
4:31 I know that that's a long-ass transformation sequence, but I get the feeling, like most anime, every section of the transformation is supposed to be happening at the same time, which in real time should only take a few seconds to do
Tails: I'M FALLING!
Me: YOU CAN FLY
Best part of this review is 18:02 I can't stop watching it
same
The Censored Mode was so funny!
Ivan Simpson I hate the unfair expert mode!!
He finally brought it back
GOD F- *BLEEP* ING SH- *BLEEP* . THESE SPECIAL STAGES ARE F *BLEEP* ING HORRIBLE!
@@drmobiandoom They're not that bad.
The voice actor for Amy Rose was Jennifer Douillard.
nicholas wilcox They sound pretty similar, or at the very least when i first heard it.
GamerHats I have no memory of Atomic Betty. I hardly even remember the ads for it on Cartoon Network.
Kiernan Howell-MacKinley Welp, there's your reason.
***** Yes, indeed.
I do in fact remember it, born in '95 and barely went outside, so i was bound to come across it down the line.
I... i like this game. Sure, it has many faults. But it just has a special place in my heart. Mostly because i love Team Chaotix.
She wants to physically assault Sonic, just so he can marry her?
(close up on Amy’s face)
Ah!
That part's funny
I hear the Gamecube version is the best.
or PC
They have less load times.
Evan Peskoff that’s the version I have. The same can be said about Shadow the Hedgehog.
Nintendoes and PS2 don't
It is.
I was just waiting for you to talk about the special stages. Man as a kid I used to hate these stages and we're never able to get all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
guess not many people know that mashing w/ Omega reduces his sliding
Really?
Really!
supernitendex7 There's a lot of control quirks that really alleviate issues people may have. I can't say it means it's perfect but the control really is something you can get used to with few problems.
Anyone else kinda excited to see this video get to a million views?
Was originally going to be Sonic Adventure 3 but the team changed the name to Sonic Heroes in a bid to attract new fans to the game franchise.
There was originally going to be an "F" rank, but ended up getting cut out of the final game
While playing as Shadow or Omega, if you use the first-person camera to look at Rouge, she will occasionally turn her head and wink at you.
21:13 Thanks, TheDarknessTheCurse! Now I can never see Big in Sonic Heroes without imagining a Big-Knuckles Shipping XD
What's with so many people saying stating their opinion and then saying "COME AT ME" or "BRING IT"? Is this a new thing in the troll community?
Definitely not a thing anymore lmao
I forgot how much i liked this review. Definitely worth the rewatch!
5:19 You KNOW you're taking too fucking long when Sonic '06 is ready before you are.
"Chaotix's length is really schizophrenic."
Really, does Vector hear voices?
Maybe that's why he wants to be rich...
I actually wouldn’t mind to see a Xbox and ps4 port for this game but they fix the control and frame rate
I love your channel man thanks for the content best of luck in this new year
Well, Thats a Load off my back.
6:19 Savage Omega
I, for the life of me, could NOT complete the special stages with Team Rose. It may be faster to retry, but the emerald goes too fast.
Want my advice? Do it with Team Dark. They move MUCH faster in the special stage. Their levels might be longer, but I was able to get each emerald on my first try, even after many slip-ups and running into bombs.
Team dark is harder than Team Sonic and the same speed so do it with Team Sonic. Also do it when you first play the stage, rather than waiting til after beating them all to re try them for the emeralds
R u going to review knuckles chaotix now?
Team Chaotix story is like a Tenacious D story. They go through a series of wacky misadventures playing their music all to just pay the rent.
Meh. I was able to adapt to the controls, and the long levels didn't bother me too much.
I like Heroes, but I agree that it _could_ have been better.
It's one of those things where I can see how they cause problems, they just didn't bother me in particular. Similar to how Johnny assesses 06's controls in his review.
Well believe it or not, having this length of the level can be an problem. I wouldn't mind it so much if it were between 3-7 minutes.
Weird, I had the ps2 version of the game and met none of the problems that he listed in the video.
Same here.
completing Sonic heroes 4 times wasn't that much of a problem for me
+Brandon Cooper It's not all that repetitive the 4 teams are there for replayability and it's far better than Shadow the hedgehog
+William White The characters all play the same and suffer the same issues, like the speed controls for every speed character. I would love this game much better, if it was just Team Sonic only.
Then the game would be too short
William White
Well seeing how Team Sonic levels are long enough as it is, the game would be long enough for a Sonic game.
You're right
“If you don’t collect enough orbs to reach that emerald in the first 15 fucking seconds of the special stage, YOU WILL FAIL!” LMFAO 🤣
