Johnny vs. Sonic Lost World (Wii U & 3DS)

- Here it is, the review of the latest game in the Sonic franchise. Sonic Lost World takes the Hedgehog through over 7 different worlds, battles against the Deadly Six, and also takes things back to a simpler time in terms of high-speed platforming. The boost formula is gone. The Wisps are back. However, does this change end up working out in the end, or was it a bad idea to shake things up at this point?
The new like bar makes me think I'm about to level up a Pokemon.
I want to battle!
Hahaha! YES!
That's what it reminds me of thanks
Or better yet.. looks like you filled your boost gauge in Sonic Generations Johnny, :P
i see it too
Just a note: they changed something in a recent update. Getting 100 rings DOES give you a 1-up now. Cuts back on the difficulty a bit.
SPINDASHPRO :D
ER MER GAWD
when eggman start.
So the thought process is "We'll patch this sum bitch till you people like it!"?
Did any of the other games do that?
am i the only one addicted to this channel?
this is like my 5th time watching this review
Nope me too but not 5th time on this review
same
I know right?? Me too, and I like it :v no shame jajaja
Embracing The Madness Me too haha, but I'm also addicted to his gaming channel, the super gaming bros. If you haven't checked it, you've been missing out on some good stuff
Embracing The Madness Im pretty sure I've seen every Metroid and Sonic review atleast 10 times. He is so entertaining and has a good opinion on all the games he plays.
Little did Johnny know of the horrors soon to befall the beloved blue hedgehog...
Wat
Uhhh that would be a probably not
Davis Underwood Yep. A licensed cartoon-based game. Whatever. Lost World is still the last mainstream Sonic game.
joe hartington Cartoon show?
+Davis Underwood Sonic Boom is a non-canon spin-off that Sonic Team had no part in developing, and it doesn't affect the main series in the slightest. The only reason everyone thinks we're in a new dark age is because it's the only thing happening that's Sonic-related right now.
Sega 1980's - 1990's; We need to beat Nintendo!
Sega 2000 - 2015; Let's release it for the Wii U and the 3DS
2006-2009 we don't need nintendo

It's depressing
I always wait until I beat a game to watch reviews on it, to avoid spoilers. That said, I just beat Lost World today, and believe me, the one phrase that sums up how I feel after watching the review is: "Oh good; I'm not the only one."
I felt pretty much exactly like Johnny did about the game. It's like they took ideas from New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy, blended them and slapped Sonic as the main character. Hell, the way Tails escapes in one cutscene and the last battle against Zavok made me give up. Something that I didn't see John mention was how slow Sonic feels, even with the run button which ultimately screws over his momentum. I too would have preferred if they had approached the controls like they did with Generations.
The first half of the cutscenes were cringe-worthy with their dialogue, getting a little better in the second half. To be quite honest, I actually liked the Deadly Six, I just wish that they had been fleshed out. They seem interesting enough, but absolutely nothing is explained about them or the Lost Hex.
If you ever get the chance, get the Yoshi's Island and TLoZ DLC. They are so worth it and are ironically the funnest part in the entire game.
As for the 3DS version, also, thank you. It makes me happy to know I'm not the only one who looked like a dumbass playing the Special Stages. XD
I really want to like this game, but I feel so mixed about it and I've never felt this way about a video game before.
Charriii5 Same here
can we sin the fact that sonic lost world is mario galaxy and new super mario bros with sonic copy and pasted over mario?
*every like is a sin*
Same.
Hi i love ur channel
Hey it's my silver the hedgehog voice actor back in the day! :)
"What ever happened to focusing on one gameplay style and fleshing it out into something gamers would like to replay over and over again?"
That seems to be Sonic's problems all throughout his 3D career, isn't it? Sega either has no confidence that their audience would have appreciated a straight up platformer and proceeded to add gimmicky character specific gameplay styles like Fishing, Shooting, more emphasis on combat or vehicles, or they wanted to please everybody at once. Sega needs to pick one platforming style that fits Sonic, one tone for it's stories and run with it, no pun intended, yes that will alienate some of the fans, but you can't please everybody. The sooner they learn that, the better off Sonic will be... that, and for the love of chili dogs, STOP RUSHING THESE GAMES
Altar360 is it any wonder why Mario has always been good XP Sonic doesn't even come to close to being Mario's rival
+Altar360 Didn't fans ask for shooting levels during the development of Sonic Adventure?
VolcanoShed That's what I mean. They tried to please everybody at once. In doing so they gave us a lot of inconsistent gameplay mechanics that don't fit a Sonic game
You can't rush when you make a Sonic game, but you can when you finish (unless you're Sonic Boom, apparently).
+Altar360 gjhggfrf fighting ghhhvhh
Who the fuck thought using the 3DS' gyroscope for the special stages was a good idea? This is supposed to be portable and playable in public! Could you imagine playing a special stage from this game in public?
It's worst in a car, where you can't exactly move around in any direction.
***** 15-20 MINS shouldn't be in any game
***** well ya but there aren't any real levels or acts in those games
+A.Blob.Of.Clay That's what sleep mode is for....
+Zac Scarpellino Its fun getting ur friends to play on a bus ;)
I'll admit, "Sonic Lost World" is not the greatest Sonic game to come out since "Sonic Unleashed", but it does have plenty of qualities that makes it kind of enjoyable to play nonetheless.
He never said it was bad
KidSnivy69 Yeah, I know.
S-Sonic...Boom....
I agree. This game has so much potential
jnjjules Plenty of Sonic games have potential, but Sega rarely capitalizes on them or tries refining them
This, and Cobanermani456's reviews, of this game, are the best I've seen.
You both covered just about every aspect of the game people want to know about. Good job.
I sincerely hope that Johnny does a "Then and Now" re-review of this game in the future, seeing as quite a few of his gripes with the Wii U version have been fixed in both patches and DLC. 100 Rings gives you lives again, all the Wisps save for the Rhythm Wisp can be controlled with the Analog Stick, and lives/animals can be grinded to near ridiculous amounts with the Zelda/Yoshi DLC (Yoshi for lives and Zelda for animals), making getting through this game MUCH more comfortable and fun.
I remember watching this right when the game came out. This was truly Johnny’s golden era.
My playthrough of the 3DS version was so up and down. Sometimes fun, mostly not.
Then again it's Dimps so that kind of inconsistency is to be expected at this point.
The only games that Dimps did right are the DBZ games for PS2 and PSP to me
By far this review is better IGN and gamespot's review
Most of his reviews are.
Although GameTrailers are also more fair than those two.
I used to enjoy Gametrailers but I got sick of their editing style and that obnoxious "Is this game the best thing ever? Or is it total shit?" at the start of every video.
CheetosForBreakfast No, it's not the best but it isn't superman 64 level
Can't spell ignorant without IGN.
For the last 6 or 7 years, I've seen the same recurring theme regarding SEGA with their Sonic games:
They keep trying to fix what is not broken.
It's not even that they try to fix it, they just move on to something else completely different. Sonic should really take some notes from mario, perfect the core gameplay first then you can start to add gimmicks, that's why all of his games are met with such high praise.
I
Bryan Watkins They did that with Unleashed, Colors, and Generations, but SEGA being the pricks they are, they changed the gameplay once again.
They seemed to be getting there too with the boost trilogy, though my biggest gripe with the controls are how stiff they are when you need careful platforming but I actually know why they work that way because in the past sonic games he was too slippery and that's a terribly thing to have when your main gimmick is running fast and makes it more of death sentence than a useful skill
Bryan Watkins The controls actually felt pretty smooth in Generations, but when it comes to Unleashed and Colors, I see your point.
+Omar Elmosrati
Generations and Colours felt too stiff whereas UNLEASHED was a tad "loosey Goosey" as the kids say.
That main theme is amazing. Definitely in its top 10 for me.
It's pretty good... And it's a comment from 2015
Oh my god. John. This is the BEST review of Lost World I've seen. You praise what works, and what you had trouble with you don't blame on the game. I'll say I enjoyed the package more than you did, but I pretty much agree with everything you've said here. Excellent job (not that we really expected any less). There's a reason this thing reached 200 likes before a troll could screw that Pokemon's level.
Every time Johnny says "In the first place", take a shot.
There is now an update for the Wii U game so that:
•100 rings = 1up
•Controlling ALL Wisps with Joysticks and Buttons instead of Motion Controls.
•Fixing glitches.
I know I said this on another one of your videos but this review style gives me a really good idea of what the game is going to be like. The editing is done really well, if you have disagreements it feels really legitimate and the voice is really relaxing!
Now I wonder if he'll take a look at the PC version.
He'll do it in his "Then & Now" session
+Mamaspeeder MODS MODS MODS
sonicgamer42 What
Mamaspeeder When Sonic Lost World PC was announced, everyone was gushing over the inevitable fanmade level mods, especially with Generations having a pretty good modding community. This lead to Matt, of Tails Channel fame going: "MODS MODS MODS!"
sonicgamer42 Oh ok, I thought you were screaming for youtube mods for a second.
This is why I think it's a bad idea for Sega to ONLY make Sonic games.
They're trying to experiment with alot of things here, but because they're only stuck with one series, it's up to Sonic to juggle all of these ideas at once, resulting in a game that's all experiment, no build around.
Had this game's multible different ideas & gimmicks been spread out into different games, that whould've made Sonic lost world not only less crowded, but also given developers time to think all these ideas through alot better.
There are things like the Parkour that seems like a good step ahead for Sonic, but because this idea is fighting for room with the new whisps, flying stages & all that, it wasn't given the needed time to be worked on. Instead, they could've just tried & take all the different flying controls & work with them on a Nights game for a later time or something. Whould've been less shit clogging Lost world's developement & whould've propably pleased quite a few longtime Sega fans.
Though, I don't know if Sega even has the money or manpower to spread this shit into multible projects for the future at this point. This is just how I whould've propably seen it.
oh god those 3DS Special Stages...If only we can use the analog stick XD
I went insane getting those chaos emeralds because I own the 3ds version and it was sort of worth it
I've never played the 3ds version since I've never owned but I'm assuming your saying the special stages are bad
Angry lolbit. To be honest, you're not missing much.
if I had a nickel for every time he said "To begin with" or "In the first place" I would be rich
I most certainly didn't have a better experience than you in the 3DS version. As you said, the first few stages are good, but then completely goes downhill once you reach the next worlds
I think the only really bad stages were most of the puzzle-based stages and, of course, Lava Mountain, but the other stages were really good. But yeah they sometimes take way too long.
HA. DOWNHILL. It's funny because Sonic runs down hills.
Oh man, Johnny's gonna have a field day when he sees Sonic Boom.
The knuckles re design is the worstttt. I don't mind the look of gameplay but not some re designs...
I agree the design of Knuckles is awful, but Sonic,Tails and Amy is not too bad but don't let the design of the characters ruin the game for you
I'm ok with making a more muscular knuckles, kind of fits his personality. But man, does he still need those chicken legs? It looks so awkward O_O.
A new sonic TV series too. Its weird last series I watched was sonic x or something. I dont mind eggmans look
When has a character design ever affected a game? AND don't say DmC: Devil May Cry.
"Welcome, it's glad to have you here."
You can never undo this mistake, Johnny.
This is probably the only review that I have seen that actually compliments the game more than 3 times. Thank you, SomecallmeJohny!

I'm playing this on Steam Deck now and I'm really enjoying it. I've been playing all the Sonic games I missed and I've found them to be much better than they were given credit for
sonic games actually were ALWAYS about speed, the original song was actually made because the developer of sonic loved trying to beat the first level of mario as fast as possible, so he thought a game where the point of it was beating levels quickly would be a great idea
I just noticed i said song instead of game…WOW
*****
Go play the second level of the first Sonic game and tell me if it's all about speed...
Because it's not all about that... It's a factor in what makes Sonic Sonic, but there's also platforming and other things with newer features since the Classic days.
That's not what Yuji Naka said. He said that he noticed that he'd have to play the first level of Super Mario Bros. over and over every time he played it, so he wanted to make a game that rewarded consecutive playthroughs, something with a higher skill ceiling.
The Geek Critique
he said both things

Can't believe this game and review are 7 years old!
Brings me nostalgia.
I feel ya, I remember watching this video when it was brand new
10 years old now
I'm one of the few people who actually finds this game to be heavily underrated. Yeah, it had its flaws, and it wasn't the stellar game that everyone hoped for, but this is certainly NOT a game of Dark Age quality.
TheBlue Typhoon17 same here, lost world is a fun game but has major flaws, especially the 3ds version...(Frozen Factory Act 3 is the new Lost Impact XP)
TheBlue Typhoon17 I'm with you, but I do think that the 3DS version is terrible.
Markell Hawthorne I was referring to the Wii U version as being underrated. The 3DS version is just awful.
TheBlue Typhoon17 yep 3ds is awful. it was so bad it made Cobanermani456 rage quit once XD
xy394 A Sonic level should *NEVER* take 15-20 minutes to complete.

Wow, time flies. This review is already 4 years old. I honestly love Lost World (specifically the 3DS version) more than any of the boost formula games. I hate the Wii U/PC version though. The problem I have with that version of Lost World is that it's somewhat a return to Sonic's platforming roots (which I like), but at the same time it ended up being more of a chaotic experiment. It had many stages I just straight-up hate and a good amount of the stages felt very copy-and-paste. I especially hated how Sonic controlled. He felt so stiff in mid-air after a homing attack and when turning while running, he veers off so awkwardly. The boss fights are also pathetically easy and not much of a challenge at all. Lastly, the parkour system was okay, but iffy to utilize. It seemed to me as if you always had to hold the run button in order to parkour unlike in the 3DS version where you didn't need to hold the run button down to parkour at all. You simply needed to gather up enough momentum in order to parkour. The Wii U/PC version is just weird. That version has a lot of design choices I simply don't tolerate.
The 3DS version on the other hand, controls brilliantly. Sonic controls almost exactly like how he did in the Adventure formula games and his controls feel more loose. I donated so much time to Lost World 3DS than any of the boost formula games by far. I hated the gyroscope controls though and how they're forced on you and there's never been a patch to remove them from this version. It's a shame. I also didn't like how Sonic was the only character you could play as. Tails could've been playable. Other than that though, I loved the emphasis on puzzle-solving in some of the levels. It's an interesting little twist to Sonic's platforming prowess and I even make it a challenge for myself to complete them as quick as possible. I especially loved the parkour system in the 3DS version. It works so much better and It's a lot of fun using it and not having to rely on springs to get to higher places. Now you actually have to donate input into climbing ledges and even creating your own sort of shortcuts using parkour. That shit's a lot more fun and involving than anything Forces (which is an overly automated and pathetic excuse of a platformer) has to offer.
Even the boss fights are a bit more challenging and interesting than the ones in the Wii U/PC version. Case in point, Lost World 3DS is a decent game despite its flaws while the Wii U/PC version is very mediocre at best. I hope Dimps comes back and continues to make Sonic games again. They often do a better job than Sonic Team, I don't care what anybody says.
Parkour? ... Assassin's Speed?
More like Speed Edge.
DK KR *slow clap*
+Kenpokid4 Crap, Sonic and Ezio are voiced by the same person..
Dr. Cardus
... Wait, really?
Kenpokid4 Yep. Fun fact: In the italian version of Sonic Lost World, Sonic is voiced by Renato Novara which is the italian voice actor of Ezio. So... Sonic sounds like Ezio in both versions.
This was 7 years ago I want to go back
Its been 10 years since I discovered Somecallmejohnny.
Fun fact :Sonic Lost World is the first game I've ever played on the 3ds.
At first, I thought that the game was awesome, but overtime, I grew tired of
slogging through the game until finally throwing in the towel on the desert level.
You're review is spot-on on the 3ds version. Especially the special stages.
Same except Generations was the first Sonic game I played on it and while I did beat the game once, I gave up on Sky Road Act 2 in my Let's Play. I honestly liked the special stages besides being unable to record.
Remember when everyone was bitching about Lost World's experimentation and now it's turn to Forces' formulaic style?
Samic8485 Forces in my opinion isn’t good critically, but at least the controls are functional.
I got the Wii U version for Christmas, and imo, the red ring hunting wasn't nearly as terrible as you made it sound. the only areas that gave me trouble were Frozen Factory zones 2 (The pool tables are much harder than they look) and 3 (That 2nd pinball machine....never again.)
The game got a lot better with the updates: you get an extra life with 100 rings! You don't have to use the motion controls for the wisps anymore!
+CarozQH on PC or Wii U or 3ds?
Haruhi Suzumiya
WiiU
CarozQH woo-hoo?
hmm, has 3ds and pc changed since then?
Haruhi Suzumiya
The PC version came out months after the update and I really doubt you can have motion controls on a PC...
CarozQH wii U version had wiimotes I take it. I just used the gamepad from the demo.
True story: when I played the 3DS version of Lost World, the R button on my 3DS got fucked up because I held it down to run too much and so I had to replace the whole system! Fortunately I had warranty on the thing!
PSA: The US now has a demo of Sonic Lost World for both the 3DS and Wii U. If you are curious about the game, I recommend you download the demo.
Excellent review. The game reminded me of Unleashed in a lot of ways. I gotta say though, the game may not have been great, but considering that Sonic's 25th anniversary is coming up in a few years, it may have been a smart move for them to get all the experimentation done now, so that by that time we can have a Sonic game that kicks ass while still feeling new. They really overused the changing gravity in the game though. Honestly, when I get to the level where you had to use the gravity to roll fruit around, it felt more like they were trying to show off than make a good game.
That's true enough. The 25th anniversary is in 3 years. Also, I think there's one more Sonic game going to the Wii U exclusively out of Sega and Nintendo's temporary partnership. I hope the next game goes to the PS4 (it would look AMAZING) and with the boost gameplay. MAYBE they could add in some parkour elements into it.
***** Smash Bros is not apart of the deal. It's already been confirmed that it's gonna be some kind of racing game.
"Smart move" and "Sonic Team" are two words that REALLY don't go well together
FelpHero Sonic Generations.
TheCookiezPlz Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Fighters, Sonic Shuffle, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Riders, Sonic And the Secret Rings, Sonic and The Dark Knight, Shadow The Hedghog, Sonic 06, Sonic Genesis
13:11 The 3DS Version actually gives an extra life on 100 rings.
13:52 The 3DS Version gives you only an extra level per area, but Super Sonic is unlocked much more easier.
Are talking about the Wii U version or 3ds version for unlocking Super Sonic because if your talking about the 3ds version all I can say is *ARE YOU FUCKING HIGH*
Yeah well, with updates the Wii U version has the 100 rings=Extra Life by now, and while Super Sonic can be unlocked before beating the game in 3DS, those special stages are tiring and forced.
@@filletofish2200 Moving around the 3DS in those 7 special stages is hard, yes, but they aren't that long. You can also just restart right before you're about to fail.
On the other hand, the Wii U version makes you look through EVERY SINGLE LEVEL for 5 SPECIFIC RINGS. And it isn't like those rings are put right in your path.
So yeah, you have either 7 levels of looking like a fool by moving around your 3DS, with the last one being really hard, or you can search like a maniac through every single level in the game for 5 rings.
Between having to clean off every level before I can get Super Sonic, and having to only finish 7 levels with 50 rings, I'll take the 3DS version.
wow he's definitely right this game has way too many damn gimmicks it's insane also I feel like playing this would give me motion sickness with all the flipping at high speeds especially if I had 3D on my god
it's not that bad I've done it myself
I wonder will Johnny update his review by a little bit when the Lost World patch hit...?
Edit - Patch is already out, folks! Get to updating and enjoy using the wisp with the analog stick+buttons!
I wonder what you have to say about the new patch, Johnny?
-Indigo Asteroid, Crimson Eagle, Orange Rocket, and Black Bomb can be controlled with the Analog stick, not the Gamepad.
-100 Rings = Extra Life
-Game Overs and continues give you Ten Lives instead of Five.
-Fixed a rare graphical issue that would sometimes appear during the pinball section of the Frozen Factory casino area.
-When completing the NiGHTMARE DLC, users will be notified that they can re-play it after scoring 100,000 points.
-Items will now appear on the world map.
Maybe in a "Then and Now" segment for this game. I hope you have a better time with this.
Sega adding sprinkles to a turd. Why should this change the outcome? The horrible level design and controls are still there.
Thethingsaretricky
Dude, just go fuck yourself already. You've made your unwanted opinion known a hundred times.
Timour Khan
Neither, he's a Sonic fan.
Something I would like to note with the Lost World 3DS special stages is that when you pause in the middle of a special stage, it resets the 3DS gyroscope. I found this to be THE ideal way to play Lost World 3DS Special Stages while in a small confined space, or I was just sitting down.
Also, 20:49, even without this trick that I mentioned above, I did not get shoulder cramps or get dizzy from playing the special stages.
Lemme tell you, the "Then and Now" segment about Sonic Lost World is going to be VERRRRRY Interesting.
Not only does the game get an update but it also gets....
A Yoshi's Island DLC Level?
Oh, and a ZELDA LEVEL?
I wonder what was his reaction when he first saw the Yoshi Island DLC announcement at the Nintendo direct...
well, it's a nintendo exclusive, don't be surprised
Still doesn't make the game any better.
One rumor is that Lost World is using the ideas from Sonic Xtreme
+Israel Trevino Jr Well that's actually true. When you think about it you realize taht before mario galaxy there was Sonic Xtrem (1997) however its unpopularity due to the fact that it is an unreleased title make most of the people think that it looks like Galaxy.
+Louis Brasil Nope. They stole it from Galaxy. The developers didn't even know Sonic X-Treme existed
+The best worst channel on TH-cam Nah. Sonic Lost Worlds is not a Mario Galaxy clone, it only appears that way on the surface. If anything, Mario Galaxy copied many things from previous Sonic games (including but not limited to Sonic X-Treme) and even many non-Sonic games.
+DarkChaos How the hell could Galaxy copy Sonic Xtreme if it wasn't even officially released? Oh and how did Galaxy copy anything from other Sonic games? If you bring up Mad Space as an example that is a poor af argument.
Death Egg Zone in Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
Sonic Xtreme.
Crazy Gadget and Mad Space in Sonic Adventure 2.
Super Mario Galaxy.
Sonic Lost World.
They're all similar. But they're still different in their own ways.
The definitive version is WiiU. The features advertised for the game are most intrinsic with the Wii U, it has the better narrative, cutscenes that don't decimate your retinas and was made by Sonic Team.
PC version is a clone of the Wii U with less content and less creative formatting(controls)
mods don't factor in when discussing the quality of a game, because they're outside MODIFICATIONS.
All in all, this was a all right game. Frozen Factory can burn along with the origin of the Deadly Six, no matter what version you're playing.
It's still one of the hardest Sonic games ever.
I have watched like 6 reviews of games on your channel yet i haven't found a game that yiu truly like
If you hold the spindash button leading into a jump once you land back down you’ll continue the spindash, making it an infinite spindash. It’s similar to the boost if you use it this way, although it’s a bit harder to control.
You're a great reviewer, awesome
3:15 I love that Spaceballs reference.
I distinctly remember spinning around playing one of the special stages on my 3ds when my sister walked in and told me I looked like a jackass.

Yeah, too bad the keyboard controls are pretty awkward.
+Ivan Simpson but can't you change the keyboard controlls?, unless you are talking about using a keyboard in general
*****
I'm pretty sure you can change the controls, though I haven't tried that myself.
it's easy, just go to the input options, you can't change the controller input through
Stick to the Wii U version over the PC version.
I love the intermittent swearing during the review. Never knowing when an f-bomb is going to drop is pretty fun.
I fucking love your Metroid shirt, Johnny!
Sonic Lost World isn't the only Sonic game where getting 100 rings doesn't grant you an extra life. Unleashed and Colors did that as well
In Unleashed you can, but only once. If you get 100 Rings you'll get one. But if you gain 200, 300, 400, etc. then you don't.
+Monkey D. "Straw Hat" Luffy That's stupid
William White
Yeah, it is.
+Monkey D. "Straw Hat" Luffy Same thing happens in Sonic Colors
William White
Actually, I just tested it out. Just like Lost World, you don't get a 1-up for getting 100 Rings.
hey johny what about the sound track?
Fun game: Count how many times Johnny says "In the first place" or "To begin with"
i wonder what your sonic boom review will be like when the game comes out
I do hope that Sonic Team returns to the Adventure game play style. In my opinion I think the reason they keep bringing classic Sonic back is because the boost game play has a hard time standing on it's own, bringing back the adventure gameplay and making characters like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow playable again would solve that issue.
I hate this games story. Sonics a douche to Eggman even though Eggman us their only hope to save the world. A lot of the time I found myself siding with Eggman a lot of the time, as he was the only one who thought rationally
+thomas garrett (Pokemastertomm) did you ever reach the ending for the game?
+Python_l Yeah and I think we all saw it coming, but still. For most of the game, Sonic is a douche for no reason
I stopped caring about story by the 4th world so, I don't know
After seeing how much they didn't care about story from the structure alone I just cared about sonic's personality alone. Some comebacks he makes are kinda funny. If only there was more than, like, 3.
+Samir Malik I felt that Tails personality was all kinds of wack! I mean, why is Tails being such a bitch about Sonic asking Eggman for help instead of him? Eggman knows more about the earth sucking machine then Tails! Its not like Eggman is Sonic's new player 2 or anything! I also didn't like how the theme of the story went from simple and upbeat to dramatic and sad!
Honestly, Johnny, I hope you never become a billionaire, because your Sonic reviews are some of the most entertaining videos I've ever seen. Seriously.
This looks like a Super Mario Galaxy Sonic Skin DLC with a $60 price tag.
Well, someone hasn't played it.
SolidSanics I actually have it on my 3ds. so yeah smartass. someone has played it.
Noah Caboose Well, that explains a lot. The 3DS version is shittier.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHERE DID THE WISPS COME FROM, THEY WENT BACK TO THERE PLANET AT THE END OF SONIC COLORS, BUT GAVE NO EXPLANATION TO THERE RETURN IN THIS GAME!

Just make a game that play exactly like modern sonic in generations and you'll have a very please fan base. Then again, its sonic's fan base, so you might wanna add a chao garden and some "concept art" of sonic and amy making out
Lol
No matter what they make, one third of the fan base will hate it. Generations-style game? Adventure fans will hate it. Adventure-style game? Classicists will call blasphemy. Classic-style game? Modern fans will complain about it being "old". I hate the Sonic fanbase.
What would you expect? It's the sonic fanbase. I am glad that i left this fanbase all i want is another good sonic that i can play and i'm all good
Well now Sonic Forces is getting bashed for exactly that reason.
dapperfan44 It's getting bashed for being bad.
"I know the 3D perspective for Sonic has been an incredibly bumpy ride, but the answer isn't to cut away from it entirely; you just have to keep trying until you get it right." -Johnny, 2010
Remember when you used to be optimistic about games and gave the impression that you cared when a franchise took risks? Yeah, that doesn't happen anymore.
Taking risks isn't a pass for a game being mediocre. for a risk to be appreciated, it has to have been worth it with the good out weighing the bad and push the series forward, what you want to do is perfect the fundamentals first then you move on to gimmicks that's the rule of getting better at anything in life, unfortunately sonic likes to cut corners in that aspect
Well what is it then? I wouldn't call it "good", maybe "okay" the game did have interesting concepts in it but it was all under developed due to the lack of time the game gives you to really appreciate a mechanic it's introduced making the experience to me feel a bit schizophrenic and it even shows in how they choose to teach you how to play the game there are multiple abilities you learn from trial and error rather than the game explaining to you what to do
What're you talking about? If that's a problem most people have with the game it's a failure on the game developers part, not the players so telling me to get better doesn't make sense when difficulty isn't even the thing that's being discussed when I play a game I don't want to have to tolerate it I wanna enjoy it and having a game with not so good controls isn't an idea of fun for me especially when the game doesn't teach you what you can and can't do.
You like it fine, but that doesn't make you more skilled at games it just means you have a higher tolerance for mediocrity than I do
Okay I will, but I have to ask, why do you keep bringing up difficulty? I never said the game was difficult I just said it didn't feel good to play.
Then again looking at his name would have saved me a lot of time in this debate
Well, at least the new update makes 100 rings equal a 1up again!

didn't play the game yet,but judging by his review,i think a less bad dark age of sonic is back

He said that it was first impressions, and admitted he hadnt played the game. But can we not make some opinion of a game before we play it? Can I not look at what it's game play, and listen to other's opinion and form some sort of idea? You can get some idea of what a game is, and where it falls short from pictures and videos.
*****
Well he is trying to give a solid first impression. But if we are not allowed to do that, then you are going to waste a lot of money on games you dont like.
***** You must've raged hard when IGN said this game was mediocre.
Person Rocca solid first impressions like this are just ridiculous
so glad generations is returning as lost world really was the complete opposite of unleashed starting a renaissance for sonic this instead causing the most pointless dark age of sega just needing to stop changing & stick with what they have as they should've stuck with and improved on generations great design.
do love dr. eggman in this(feeling as threatening as sa1 at times/especially sounding like he's about to snap in the 3ds final boss that i wish forces followed up on.)/sonic's moments with the deadly 6 but they are alongside infinite/dark age villains the most one note antagonist in sonic that got overused(i remember a prediction johnny made of them working with sonic to stop eggman which would've been more interesting than just being evil for no reason.),being very bare with it's world even more than the classic games(lost hex might as well be earth/should've just been on little planet to close out sonic 4's cliffhanger like bsc joked.) and having the worst version of tails period(he's completely a brat that knuckles should've been with them to literally knock some sense into with the amount of times they team up with eggman that he's way worse than forces/just repeating colors with the brainwash only made completely pointless from a pull.).
when not showing the biggest problem with sonic adding styles that should've been put on a different sega series showed how clunky sonic was on the wii u(none of the games for sonic were good and just outright plain bad and we nearly lost a way better sega series for/if anything wondered why they didn't make it an actual mario & sonic game with sonic's controls being very mario like alongside ripping the style off the hardest .)/the wisp being pointlessly shoved in with no story reason for being there(alongside really showing they didn't know what to do with the chaos emeralds with how pointless they/the red rings are.) other than show desperate experimentation as lost world both isn't a good sonic and is a complete mess.
do love it starting to remember amy's caring nature before boom fully revived her not being a stalker like in jason era(especially how amy never even once mentions her love of sonic outside appropiately when she almost dies.)/while pointless in how he didn't do anything when he should've been on the lost hex beating up the zeti like knuckles rivalry with sonic having cranky kong vibes while ,the music while either forgettable or made me wish i was playing unleashed was fine & especially love the dlc(especially zelda's showing the potential lost world's control had as it did have some for a adventure return like it having the bounce attack and spindash just handle it better.)
johnny are going to do a review of the other zelda titles like skyward sword and twilight princess?
The deadly six make me think of the emotion characters from inside out
Personally, I would've loved to see this game on XBOX , or as a PS3/ VITA crossbuy. As much as I love the blue hedgehog, I cannot warrant spending $299+ for a single game, and a Wii U. And if the game looked great on 3DS, it would've looked incredible on Vita. Regardless of what negative opinions people have over it.
Well, us Nintendo fans didn't get the console version of sonic generations, so it's only fair.
Warsc2k no, sonic colors was made 3 years ago, that contract is dead, this is a new contract, 3 games, lost world, that shit with olympics and another game
Johnny, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the game and show 'Sonic Boom'
For me, I don't mind it EXCEPT KNUCKLES! I just...cant...
Sonic Lost World (Wii U) In MY opinion, is the most fun I had in a video game since sonic generations and even more. On the other hand, Sonic Lost World (3DS) Is satan HIMSELF.
I couldn't agree more!
awesomeguy2009 Another guy in the world likes Sonic Lost World? YES!
Haha. A lot of people like lost world. But yeah. A lot of those people have probably never played unleashed, colors and/or generations. The main reason I really like this game is that, it's not all about speed. I really like the platforming.
I have that same Metroid shirt. I love it. I've been binging on your Sonic reviews by the way. Great job on them.
ALL HAIL THE MAGIC CONCH! Don't tell me you didn't see that coming.
magic...conch shell....YAU MEAN LIKE THEIS?!?!
More like the COCK as Dr. Robotnick comes close to pronouncing.

Hi, Somecallmejohnny! Big fan of your videos, especially your Sonic videos.
Just one question I hope you respond to.
Did you buy the Deadly Six Edition with a code for the Nightmare Zone DLC?
If so, can you, or anyone in this chat who does have a code, share it?
The codes are still reusable, so I want to have the DLC before the Wii U Eshop closes March 2023. Don't have the time or money to buy a copy with a code.
Anyway, thanks for all these great videos, looking forward to your next one, and I hope you respond.
I thought that at first with the constant moving with the special stages on the 3DS, but you have to press a button to stop Sonic and the camera moving which is also very annoying to do.
There was a patch update for the wii u version that gives you lives every one hundred rings, and the ability to use the control stick with the wisps. Should help quite a bit.
I'm surprised there had to be a patch made just to put in a simple sonic game mechanic like that
zeronightroost You would think but on the bright side at least it was patched at all. Think back to Sonic 06 and how much better it could have been if it was patched.
hypershadw ehhh... I don't know. Sonic 06 patched would probably be a little less mediocre, not completely good imo
zeronightroost
Even so. It still would have been a ton better. Maybe not amazing but a lot better. The game was released unfinished after all. Lost World was already a much more complete game released before the patch than 06 was and the patch just makes it better. Not amazing, but better.
hypershadw yeah, making improvements to sonic 06 would be extremely easy since it's such a mess. You can just fix the whole thing to make it less dreadful. Too bad it would still suck.
So Eggman's new plan is to capture critters to turn them into badniks like he did 23 years ago in oryginal Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) (minus the part with sucking energy that failed before it even started)? What's the point? I liked plans with exploding moons, controling alien energy and enslaving a time eater with his past self more than that recycled idea from classic games. Just don't get me wrong i love classic Sonic games, but they could've come up with something new and not as bland as whole Deadly Six idea.
My first playthrough with Lost World (Wii U) was also a terrible and frustrating time, it wasn't until my second playthrough and onward did I start to enjoy the game. It leaves a very bad first impression but you need to stick with it to build the skills to enjoy the game a it's fullest because the game does a terrible job of explaining the new controls.
I haven't played the Wii U version of this game yet, so when you said that rings don't reward extra lives anymore, I actually cried out, "WHAT?!"
Thanks to updates, you now get an extra life with every 100 rings.
I love Sonic, but the series seems to be becoming lackluster. I'd rather play SMG than this... But I do not intend offense against anyone who enjoys this game.
Thank you for this review, as always. ^^
I love sonic, but I'd rather play SMG over any sonic game
I rather play SMG over most; if not, all Sonic games period. Seriously, none of them will even come close on toping that.
i'm kinda sad. I feel like lost world could have had lots of potential, if only they fleshed out this gameplay style more.
Like a lost world 2, that would be really cool if they made one.
It'll fail. No matter what.
There's pretty much no chance people will ever like 3D Sonic again, considering all the attention is on Mania and 2D Sonic. Right now, it's the popular thing to hate 3D Sonic and worship 2D Sonic.
This comes from someone who prefers 3D Sonic.
Hopefully Lost World WILL be like Unleashed, and the next Sonic game on the WiiU will be like Colors/Generations and drastically improve on the foundation
I've honestly seen this review about a million times. But I don't mind because Johnny is such a good TH-camr I have probably seen every single one of his videos about fifty times
I was always so disappointed that this game didn’t do well. Graphically it’s still the best looking Sonic game with the fluid movements and animations. For the first time, the characters didn’t move like robots during cutscenes or during gameplay. And being that the crappy boost formula was ditched, that gave the developers a chance to actually DO CREATIVE THINGS with the levels, besides them being set pieces for Sonic to rush through. It was just a breath of fresh air to see them try something different with Sonic. It ALMOST approached feeling as solid as a Mario game as far as controls go. Lost World was the last chance we had at Sonic games going in a positive direction, and the fans panned it because they couldn’t complete levels on 70% autopilot like most 3D Sonic games. What’s really annoying about that is I thought fans HATED that kind of autopilot gameplay!
Great going guys (Sonic fanbase). Because of you, Sonic Team deconstructed an excellent foundation in Lost World’s gameplay, which if improved an expanded upon could have led to some really great games. All to bring it back to trash like Sonic Forces.
Yeah Lost World was a good game but the fans fucking trashed it so much that they're not going back to this playstyle ever again. What a piece of shit fanbase
It may have a good aesthetic and great soundtrack but the game is way too experimental i hate to break to you but the ideas dont really work/dont stick. The parkor system was a graet idea but it was veey finiky in lost world. The game is not horible its just ok or just a mixed bag.
