My favorite story from this series was from the mid 2010s. A few of my students complained that some of the games that existed on the old Nintendo were too basic and easy. So...I told them to beat the first stage of Ghosts 'n Goblins and tell me when they finish. The amount of aggravation and pain...I can remember that so clearly to this day.
That's a nice story. Todays "kids" often underestimate the old and rather simple games. In the most cases Videogames got a lot easier with the time and the graphics got better but as a kid of the 80's I prefer the classics - games like Demon's Crest for example. The 16bit aera was the best and most interesting time, that never happens again. I'm glad that I whitnessed it!
a guy in his 40s who could 1cc the game even put a money bet at some kids that were mocking the game in favour of cod. they only managed to reach the bridge.
Demon's Crest is one of the most underrated games of all time. I actually think it's the best in the entire series. The music and atmosphere is incredible.
Brother, I'm not sure if you'll read this comment amidst the avalanche of love being poured here in the comment section, but I just wanted to drop this extra heart of appreciation for the work you continue to do. I hadn't watch your channel in a while, and recently me and my son sat down again for a good videogame documentary and checked you again. Dude, thanks for doing this, I never played this game, but as usual I'm fascinated by the history of it, and you are my favorite guy when it comes to this. I wish words could convey more feelings, but this is all I got. Thank you dude, keep it up! So glad to have people like you for true, genuine entertainment/education. Much love Chris!
Heyyy, great to hear from you again man!! Really happy you and your son enjoyed the video. I greatly appreciate the kind words and you've been a great source of motivation for keeping me going with my content. Thank you again as always and I hope you continue enjoying my work in the future.
Thank you for making this video! GNG is one of my favorite game series, and I feel like it really deserves the same level of attention as something like Castlevania or Mega Man. This video does a great job showing why it's so important and awesome!
I could not agree more! I feel like it got a lot of recognition until the early 2000s and then it kind of faded from the limelight sadly. It’s been great seeing that it still has a small, but very passionate fan base. Curious to see if Fujiwara ever gets to do a follow up to Resurrection in the future. Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed the video!!
Really appreciate the kind words and I'm happy you enjoyed it! I had a great time putting it all together, especially since I love the series so much and learned a lot making it. Thanks again!
The intro to this video is so good!! Best video and editing yet. I gotta say I was a bit surprised on some of the information. I always wondered why there wasn't a N64 game, and I had no idea there were 2 phone games with new characters. I also didn't know Maximo was a spiritual successor to the game. Great job man! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks man, I was pretty happy with how this one came out too! Yeah, the N64 game was news to me also and I'm still hoping someday we'll get leaked footage or an incompletely ROM dump of it. I could not for the life of me find the phone games anywhere which sucks because things like this really need to be preserved better. Thanks again for watching dude!!
Just finished watching through the rest, and awesome job with this documentary! I had no idea about all these other iterations of the games throughout the year passed the snes aside from Maximo and the psp, so it was really nice seeing how much the series really lived on (or attempted to) throughout the years, and the behind the scenes stuff to compliment it 😄
Ayyyy, thanks a ton Jo, really glad you enjoyed it! This video was honestly more of an excuse for me to do some deep research into series because I love it so much. A lot of the spin-offs are great too and worth a playthrough if you ever get around to them. Thanks again!
I was 8 when Super Ghouls N Ghosts came out. I remember that everyone that I knew who had a SNES also had a copy of it. Literally everyone had it. I always played it at my cousins house and friends houses thinking it was impossible to beat. But, I just kept on and on and on and fell more and more in love with the series. Now I am almost 40 and it has become one of my all time favorite game franchises along with Castlevania and Final Fantasy and I can finally beat it! I love Super Ghouls N Ghosts so much that I even got a complete in box copy for the Super Famicom based solely on the wonderful cover artwork and the instruction manual being filled with beautiful illustrations. You are so very correct in saying how important the series is as a whole to the world of gaming. This video was extremely well done! It was wonderful sir. You did an amazing job and got a new subscriber! Please do not stop making these. What you are doing is bringing new fans to the series. I thank you sincerely for that. Have a wonderful day sir!
Thanks a ton Justin, I really appreciate the kind words and am happy you enjoyed the video! I really love hearing stories like this and it’s pretty damn awesome that you got a CIB copy of the JP Super GnG. What’s funny is my reward to myself for completing this video was a CIB copy of Super GnG on the Super Famicom as well, haha. Easily my favorite game in the series! Thanks so much again for watching and sharing your experiences! Fingers crossed the series keeps moving forward for many more years to come.
I remember seeing Super Ghouls & Ghosts as a kid and finding the graphics appealing but hearing the game was very difficult so I didn't play it until I was an adult. I like the series but I'm not very good at it. Great video and I'm glad to see you producing content again!
Super GnG is tough, but certainly doable with a little tenacity. I couldn’t finish it til I was an adult though with a lot more patience, haha. Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video!
OK at first I thought "Over an hour??" Then I watched and I'm super impressed. An immense amount of research went into this. There must be thousands of key frames too ;)
Thank you for the kind words! I don’t often get many people commenting who appreciate the sheer amount of key framing involved in my videos so thanks for that, haha. It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun too.
The reason why, I chose this channel it's because I spend hundreds of quarters. And the history of this game was very interesting. It was very frustrating when I was a child, therefore thank you for this awesome video. Hoping to play this game again. Without the horror of beating the game or playing it. Thank you
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! It’s still a brutal game even 35 years later, but thankfully you can go through it a little at a time with all the newer ports available.
I played so much Gargoyle's quest on Gameboy when I was a kid. Fond memories. I always found GNG games to be infuriatingly difficult, but I enjoyed demon's crest a bunch. Props Chris for making your way through all of them. Great retrospective on this series, keep it up!
Thanks so much, glad you liked it! I definitely preferred the Firebrand games much more when I was a kid also since they were a bit more forgiving and had the cool RPG mechanics. Now that I'm older and a bit more patient though, I fell in love with the mainline games and began to appreciate the great design and concepts that made them work. I'd love to see a modern reimagining or remake of the the GQ series though! Thanks again for watching!
This is the best GnG video on this site. As a massive fan of the series, I thank you for creating such a comprehensive video on the history of the franchise. It feels great knowing that the GnG series is basically the love child of one guy who's been in the industry for 40 years. Here's hoping a new game is in the works, and that Arthur and Firebrand make it into the new MvC, if that happens too.
I loved Ghosts n' Goblins Resurrection. I got it on the Switch at release in 2021. I don't care if some critics didn't like it. I find these days I have to make my own judgments on games because it can be a very personal assessment. The boss music in Resurrection is infectious.
Could not agree more! I've found as I've gotten older that my tastes often differ greatly than many of the journalists and critics covering games nowadays. I certainly am not influenced by review scores as much as I used to be. And agreed, the GnGR OST is really amazing!
Games that caters to a very specific type of player are always going to get people giving it negative reviews, it's always best to play it for yourself without worrying about what others say!
Congrats Chris for his efforts in honor of the most important video game in my own personal history. I have not started the video, but seems some magic around it. The duration, all the games covered. Everything seems studied and perfect. Now I am sure that someone on this world love this game as much me. I am going to enjoy each second. Thanks!
Thanks so much, appreciate the kind words! It's definitely taken time to learn how to edit and put these larger videos together so keep moving forward and going strong!
Fun fact...the UK version of ghosts and goblins first end shows a picture of the weapon to find, a cross. The problem is that the cross wasn't in the game, it was the shield. Back in the day, I literally spent all day throwing in credits to get the cross, unaware that the shield I kept finding was the weapon I needed. Had to give up when the arcade closed. Decades later, I learned the truth and finally finished it on my pandoras box. Always have fond memories of that frustrating day. Fun fact 2. Sony were cheapskates. I used to work at GAME and as part of the job, Nintendo would do competitions for stores. The ten stores that got the most preorders on certain new releases, won a copy of the retail game for each member of the staff. I got a few games like Mario sunshine and eternal darkness that way. Sony got in on the act and offered the same with Maximo. I worked my butt off to get that preorder win. We did win. The games arrived and it was a promo version, the same as the multiple samples that used to get sent to the stores anyway. I never bothered pushing the sony preorders as much. Ninteno did what Sony wouldn't. Fun days. I still have it! WELL DONE ON AN EXCELLENT VIDEO!
Thanks, really happy you enjoyed the video!! I had no idea about the cross/shield issue in the UK version, that's really crazy. I wish I had included it in the video! Glad you finally saw it through to the end though, haha. While that really sucks about what happened with Sony and GAME, it's pretty awesome that you ended up with a promo version that is probably way rarer and worth a lot more these days. Sony was certainly a much different company back then. I worked for PlayStation for a little under a decade (under the U.S. branch) during the PS3 and PS4 eras and was told that they became very different after the PS3's launch. Probably after getting their clock cleaned by the Wii and 360, haha. These are awesome stories and info, thanks so much for sharing! And thanks for watching!
@@germmanator I still have it....that and the sealed dvd teaser. That was the gamecube era. It was cool as I used to get the demo pod discs too. Only got one left after 20 years!
Chris, you got yourself another hit with this video. So well-deserved - keep at it, mate! You're one of the best out there; hope your channel explodes soon.
Demon's Crest is one of my favourite games on my favourite system - the SNES. But, it's hard to get into it. It's definitely a rather hard and long game, especially the bosses. At least it has a password system!
Agreed, the first time I played it, I "beat" it after only a few bosses and was very confused. I didn't realize until later that there was so much more to do in the game. It's a lot of fun!
Ditto and my favorite of the 3 spinoff games. Always wondered why there wasn't a sequel which would've been so easy to do since Phalanx sealed himself in the crest of heaven or, if you will, time because of it being of Japanese origin "heaven" could translate to time. Say a successor to Firebrand or humans had found the crest and unknowingly started something with Phalanx on the future, treacherous demon he was from the beginning he could prey upon them for help in being released. It could've went from there.....I'm only 2/3 of the way through the video at this point where Maximo was axed sadly and since DC I lost interest really.
@@RewindArcade Sad but true, classic case of should've left well enough alone, probably would've gotten his time if he waited for technology to advance.
I remember playing it for days for the different endings, and when I 100% cleared it, I wasn't expecting a password, the infinite crest, and a brutal secret boss. Amazing game... and that MUSIC!
I've reached out to a ton of people over the years trying to conduct interviews and clarify facts, but generally no one ever gets back to me. It's been incredibly depressing and defeating, but when you run a TH-cam channel with less than 10K subs, I suppose it's not all that surprising.
That was an extremely enjoyable watch, all the more for a longtime fan of this iconic series. Thanx so much for the high quality work. Btw, Tim Follin's soundtrack for the below average Amiga port of Ghouls N Ghosts is absolutely amazing, kudos for mentionning this talented composer who was well known in the european computer gaming industry back in the late 80' early 90'
Appreciate the kind words, really glad you enjoyed it!! I'm a big Tim Follin fan so I when I saw he composed some of the GnG computer ports OSTs, I absolutely had to mention it in the video. His music is surprisingly very different from the original, but also still incredibly good.
You deserve all the praise you are receiving for this wonderful documentary. Bravo, and thank you for taking us "down memory lane" while also raising awareness of this beloved franchise.
Thank you, thank you! What a great documentary. Brought back a lot of memories including just how confused I was by the different names. You couldn't do a quick internet search to sort things out back in those days. Really appreciate what you did here, thanks again!
Thanks so much, happy you enjoyed it! I know exactly what you mean about the names being confusing. You either got your information from friends or gaming magazines. Very different time haha!
I am only a couple minutes in, but I just subbed. The production value is excellent and I am looking forward to seeing what else this channel has to offer.
What a great video! I've loved this series since I was a little kid (even though I'm still no good at it)! Countless great memories playing Super Ghouls'n Ghosts on the SNES with my mom and sister, I play Ghosts'n Goblins whenever I fire up the Arcade1up, crazy how much I love the series while being terrible at it, haha! Thank you for making such an awesome video!
Thank you, really appreciate it and happy you liked the video! I think that says something about how fun and well designed the games are even if they're brutally hard. I've got a lot of fond memories myself of playing both GnG and Super GnG back in the day. Thanks again for watching!
This is fucking rad. I was very impressed by just the intro alone. Ty for putting so much love and refinement into this video. I am simply gobsmacked by this introduction.
Again, you're giving one of my absolute favorite series the Royal Treatment. Congratulations for the amazing piece of work. It really made my day :) I still have to give the Gargoyles spinoff its deserved time and someday I will. I first saw the Ghosts'n Goblins arcade during a weekend schooltrip to the snow, the bar in the little place we were staying in had it, and I immediately loved its theme and graphics, so a couple of years later, as I got my NES, one of the first games I got was the port of the first game... and I told you before while you were completing it a few months ago... nightmare, addicting nightmare though :) Ghouls'n Ghosts arcade machine also came into my life placing itself in a bar next to my school, and we'd spend hours watching people play it on Friday afternoons :) When we got the Megadrive port, I got to play it and it totally felt like the arcade... until you started a discussion with your gamer friends on how the backgrounds in the arcade were more rich and that faraway tree moves in the arcade but doesn't in the Megadrive version... we were like that, so when I saw the PCEngine port in magazines I almost ate the pages in wanting that port lol I got Super Ghouls'n Ghosts for the SNES on Xmas 92 and I absolutely loved it to bits, and it was the first time I completed a GG game legit :) Don't want to make it too long, sorry, but it's such an iconic series, I was ecstatic to read that, a few months after I was wishing for a new entry in the series, since it had been too long since the PSP GG, GG Resurrection was announced. I love this last entry, still on it :)
Thanks a ton, glad you liked it!! The Gargoyle's Quest games are fantastic and definitely worth checking out. I had never played GQ2 on the NES until making this video and I was surprised by just how fun and well put together it was. Certainly give it a go!
@@RewindArcade I have played all of them and yeah, they feel great! I have to complete them properly :)) I was editing my previous comment and ended up telling you my life story lol sorry ;) but I know you don't mind :)
@@nostartia Oh wow, yeah, the rest of the comment didn't pop up until just now, haha! Dude, that is so awesome about your experience with the first two arcade games and really makes me miss the good ol' days of arcades. I imagine seeing them that early on must have been mindblowing, especially with Ghouls being such a gorgeous game graphically when it first released (and still is imho!). One day I'm going to sell a kidney and treat myself to a copy of the PCEngine SuperGrafx version, hahaha! I honestly couldn't really get into Ultimate GnG as much, but I'm going to go back and give it another shot in the near future. I'm LOVING Resurrection though, almost done my second loop on Knight, then gonna move to Legend and really embrace the pain, haha! Thanks so much for sharing your memories, I love hearing these types of stories!
@@RewindArcade and I love treasuring those memories and sharing them. Thank you for giving us a reason to. All the best for this video as well, I sure will watch it a few more times in the near future ;)
This was a great video throughout. What it made me realize is that Fujiwara is the most influential developer to my life as a gamer. That resumé is just legendary.
Thank you, appreciate it!! Yeah, I feel like Fujiwara often doesn’t get the credit that people like Miyamoto and Kojima do, but he had a massive impact on the gaming industry and is responsible for overseeing some of the biggest franchises out there.
Thank you for an incredibly well produced video. Daimakaimura is one of my all time top 10 arcade games. There is just something very, very special about the atmosphere of this wonderful game.
Thank you so much for watching! Daimakaimura is one of my favs too. I spent a lot more time with the Genesis/MD version though. The stage and boss designs are amazing!
Same here. It was the primary reason why I imported a Japanese MegaDrive back then - that port looked and felt soooo close to 'arcade perfect'. Played the game to bits.
Pretty much one of the best videogame documentary I have seen in my entire life. And I am from the early 80s. Very interesting and well done work. And thank you for this. ... wait a minute! Why do you have under only 4600 subscriber? I wish you the best and hope your channel grows.
This was one of the best videos I have watched on retro games Fantastic research writing, editing and production. Thank you and kudos Greetings from Europe
Really happy you enjoyed it and thanks so much for the kind words! I grew up with GnG on the NES myself and played it constantly. I couldn’t actually finish it until I got older though, haha. 😅
This video is incredible and pays homage to one of my favorite video game series of all time spectacularly, you go into so much detail and expand on what made this franchise not only so important but so much fun. Thank you for creating something for the small, but extremely passionate and talented Ghosts 'N Goblins fanbase to enjoy, CHALLENGE AGAIN!
Thanks so much for the kind words! This was definitely a passion project since I'm a HUGE fan of the series as well. It's been great talking with other fans and hearing everyone's stories and experiences with the games. Hopefully Capcom won't make us wait another decade and a half for another game, haha. Thanks again and really appreciate you watching!
Brilliant upload, i was fascinated for the entire 1 hour duration...I'm one of the players of the original game from back in the day (still permanently scarred) and had no idea it was still even going, i think i'll invest in the latest Switch adaptation of the game. Cheers mate.
Thanks a ton, appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video! The Switch version is great, but probably the cruelest game in the series so be prepared, haha.
Cracking retrospective look at the history of the GnG series, thoroughly enjoyed every minute, I grew up with these games and have tried to collect and play them all but you’ve highlighted a couple that I missed along the way. Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce such great content.
Thanks John, really appreciate the kind words! I learned a lot myself about some of the more niche spin-off titles while researching for this. It was a fun one to put together. Thanks for watching!
I came across this as I've watched a couple of similar documentary type videos on video games. I found this very informative and it kept me interested until the very end. Great video!
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed it! This video in particular was a lot of fun to make. And agreed, it was really interesting to learn that Fujiwara also created Tomba. Such an underrated series!
Discovered your channel today through this video. Watched 8 other of your videos straight after and subscribed of course. Hopefully this channel starts growing soon. You really deserve it. Great videos. Thanks for keeping me company through a rough work day :)
Thank you so much for the sub and I'm really glad you're enjoying my content!! Some of my earlier stuff hasn't aged too well, but that's just a normal part of growing I guess, haha. Happy to help you through a long work day and thanks for the kind words!
@@RewindArcade Have watched everything from Symphony of the night through Gradius, Battletoads, Final fantasy etc. and think everything is really well done.
Great video. I'm honestly still kind of shocked there's not been any serious re-releases of the soundtrack for this series in recent years. I'd buy it.
You out did yourself on this one! Fantastic presentation and great information. I always learn something. Glad to see this one is taking off, well deserved! Genesis Ghouls N Ghost is my favorite from this franchise!
Thanks a lot dude!! Yeah it was a pretty big undertaking, but also a lot of fun to put together. I recently went through the Genesis GnG for the first time a few months ago and outside of the weird hit boxes, it's a really great port and super fun!
It is one of those franchises that falls under the category of, "can I do this." Seriously love how it revels in its difficulty and will completely destroy you. It's refreshing sometimes to play a game that won't let you take a break.
Thanks so much for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it! It was a lot of work like you said, but I love the series so much that it was really fun putting it all together.
Fantastic documentary! I remember playing Gargoye's quest on Gameboy and being amazed by the atmosphere. Once again, thank you for this well articulated doc.
Thanks so much, really happy you enjoyed it! While I played GnG on NES a lot as a kid, Gargoyle’s Quest really blew my mind since it A. let you play as the “bad guy” and B. was an amazing combination of a platformer and an RPG. I sadly lost the game on an airplane during a family trip and still haven’t fully recovered from the trauma, haha. Thanks again for watching!
@@RewindArcade Thank you Chris for this lovely and pationate reply. I had a comparable experience that I remember vividly 30 years later. Wish you the best and I will see you on another video :)
@@RewindArcade I‘m a life long fan of Ghosts‘n‘Goblins since it’s first release (same with Gradius by the way). You are dead on with your history, I love it!
Great video! Even though Gargoyles Quest is the only game in the series I owned as a kid, I love the history and info. I really enjoy your editing and how you use the graphics for impact or comedic timing. Very fun watch.
Thanks a ton! This video was especially fun to make and I had a lot of fun editing and animating all the scenes. Really glad you enjoyed it! Have you played any of the other games in the series besides Gargoyle's Quest?
@@RewindArcade I have played Ghouls and Ghosts (Genesis) and Resurrection as an adult. It's hard to find time to go back with so many new games constantly coming out, but I'd like to try some others like Super G&G.
I had no idea there were so many different titles in the series. Thank you! I remember the first two in the arcade. Later, their ports and finally, Resurrection.
I'm really impressed with the work that must have gone into editing and research; this is quality work, you deserve way more subs, hopefully it's just a matter of time. Will definitely be checking out your other videos after finishing this.
Thanks so much! This was about a 500 hour project so it's really nice when people understand the amount of work it takes to put stuff like this together. Appreciate you watching!
First, thanks for the incredible amount of work you put into these and the enjoyment you provide to myself and others. I really do hope your content stands the test of time and grows in popularity, as there's a huge disconnect between the quality of your work and the amount of views it gets. Second, I want to to commend your work on the amazing intro sequence... you really outdid yourself. There aren't many videos or channels where I see some awesome editing work that makes me go and try to figure out how they did something and learn it myself to improve my own content. And some of your work, especially this intro did just that with the animated pixel art video transparently superimposed over the gameplay. Simply fantastic and now I have to try and figure out how to pull that off in Da Vinci Resolve Fusion lol. I'm ashamed to say I've been way too busy to play the latest entry despite being a big fan of the original games. As aside from the unorthodox, somewhat puppet like art style, the game looks right up my alley.
Thanks so much dude, really happy you enjoyed it and am extra appreciative because you understand the absurd amount of work that goes into these videos. It really means a lot! The funny thing is I probably had more fun putting together the intro than the rest of the whole video, haha. I love challenging myself to try and learn new techniques and making larger set piece types of sequences. I am using Premiere Pro and not too familiar with Da Vinci, otherwise I'd gladly show you how everything works together. I love chatting with other people about this stuff and seeing how they handle their editing and animations so I'm always up for talking shop whenever if you feel like it! As for Resurrection, it's REALLY fun and probably tougher than all of the other mainline games. Definitely worth checking out! I just finished my second loop of it tonight actually and am about to start my 3rd soon.... the pain is real. Thanks again for the kind words man, hope you are well and that things are going smoothly with all your content.
@@RewindArcade I’m with you on the intros. I like to think of them as sizzle reels and what gets someone emotionally invested in the subject. By far the most creative and fun to make vs the main video editing which can become long and tedious. Even though our software is different I’ll bet the general concepts of key framing, layers and masks, and various effects are the same. More knowing how to use the tools in a certain software. But how you cut out each character from their respective video backgrounds to use them as fully animated overlays worked fantastic and something I haven’t learned how to do yet. Would come in so handy for the Toaplan doc I’m working on. I may have to hit you up in case any of the knowledge transfers and I can figure it out on my end. Or at least find some tutorials on it. There’s a lot of channels that complain about TH-cam being unfair and growth impossible, but most haven’t gotten the content and editing quality to the level necessary. They’re focusing on the wrong things. You’ve nailed it and the content is top notch, fully deserving of massive recognition. So if I can help any way on the less glamorous side of growing I’m always happy to. As there’s no other channel out there I’d love to see explode more than yours. So you can look back on all is little folk and help us get noticed 😅.
@@ShmupJunkie Dude, I will gladly show you how I rip and animate sprites. It's pretty easy and will most likely transfer over into your editing program without you having to adjust too much. I actually was doing tutorials on it on my Twitch channel while also making free animated emotes for people who stopped by. Just say the word and we can hop in a Discord voice chat or something for like 20 min. As for growing the channel, I kind of came to a realization after how bad Danganronpa performed that I wanted to adjust my focus and move away from worrying about views and subs so much to just really picking topics that I'm passionate about and having fun with researching and creating videos. I approached this documentary a lot different than all of my previous videos and my mental health is much better for it, haha. But I'm always open to advice and definitely wouldn't be upset if the channel saw some growth in the future. But yeah man, if you feel like sitting down for a bit and running over the sprite stuff, just hit me up! I'm actually pretty free the next week or two now that this video is done, haha.
@@RewindArcade yeah I absolutely would. Discord chat should be easy to do. I was hoping you weren’t rotoscoping the characters out of video because omg that’s an insane amount of work lol. So I’d love to know how you went about it. If you message me your discord name on Twitter or somewhere I’ll send you a request. And maybe you’ll have some time tomorrow. Happy to chat and help any way I can too. I used to keep an insane publishing schedule too when I started, but stopped that too for my own sanity 😅
@@ShmupJunkie Sooooo the Arthur "sprites" from Ultimate GnG and Resurrection are all masked frame by frame because they're 3D models and not sprites. It took almost a full day and truly tested my sanity, haha. Everything else though is just ripped from the game and animated in Premiere Pro, doesn't take too long. I'll DM you my Discord tag on Twitter right now though and we'll figure out a time that works.
The intro sequence alone was an achievement! I always wondered what happened to the Korean Online Game, and now I know. I hope they make a psychical copy of Resurrection. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it! I also have my fingers crossed for a physical copy of Resurrection, but Capcom rarely releases physical versions of their games after the initial release so I'm sadly not too hopeful for it.
I love your thourough review of the series, I didn't know all the versions that were out there like the WonderSwan and the Japanese only exclusives, but I also like how you followed the creator and why he did the moves he did, subbed for life bro.
Thank you, really happy you enjoyed it! I learned a lot while researching for this video myself. I always forget that Fujiwara was the one who came up for the whole concept of Resident Evil in the first place which made Capcom billions of dollars over the years. Pretty crazy!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, Fujiwara was such a huge part of video game history. I feel like he doesn’t get enough credit these days next to people like Miyamoto, Inafune, and Mikami.
Man this series was always way too hard for me lol, but I love these deep dives and learning more behind the scenes stuff. I played Maximo when I was younger and guess I never realized it was tied to G&G but in retrospect it all makes sense. Super interesting and so well made! The segment where you showed the transition from 2D to 3D and snuck Bubsy in there made me laugh out loud. Another great vid!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!! I hadn’t played Maximo until making this video because the having to buy saves and continues scared me away from it when I was younger, haha. It’s such a great series and I’m sad it didn’t get to continue. So happy the Bubsy gag landed well too 😂. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, man! As a huge fan of the series I really enjoyed this. Watched it all in one sitting. You know what I want? A HD Remaster of the Maximo games where the camera is improved on the first one. Hell, how about a NEW Maximo?
Ayyyy thanks Wes, appreciate you watching man!! While I doubt we'll ever get a third Maximo, an HD remaster collection would be so damn awesome (with fixed camera controls like you mentioned). I'd even love to see just one giant Ghosts 'n Goblins series HD collection. I guess time will tell. Thanks again man!
The entire series is still great to this day, especially Gargoyle Quest 1 and 2, such forgotten and underrated games. Demon Crest is truly amazing
Could not agree more, they’re so good! I’d love to see a remaster/reimagining of the series someday.
I cannot state with words how amazing and awesome this documentary was. Over an hour of G&G material, i cannot ask for more.
Thanks so much, that means a lot! It was definitely a passion project and a lot of fun to make. I appreciate you watching!
I am how evee going to ask for more! We want more!
Indeed. Memories brings back it does.
Except you just did, with words.
that's not what a documentary is
My favorite story from this series was from the mid 2010s. A few of my students complained that some of the games that existed on the old Nintendo were too basic and easy. So...I told them to beat the first stage of Ghosts 'n Goblins and tell me when they finish. The amount of aggravation and pain...I can remember that so clearly to this day.
That is amazing! I’m sure they’re all scarred for life now. 😂😂
Tell them to do Bayou Billy and TMNT next
Two words: Instant Regret.
a guy in his 40s who could 1cc the game even put a money bet at some kids that were mocking the game in favour of cod. they only managed to reach the bridge.
Demon's Crest is one of the most underrated games of all time. I actually think it's the best in the entire series. The music and atmosphere is incredible.
It really is a great game! Certainly a shame it doesn’t get more recognition these days.
I love Super Ghouls n Ghosts and Demon's Crest so much. They were the peak of the franchise.
They’re both such amazing games!
Good lord this is spectacular: thorough, inspired, concise…what an ABSOLUTE TRIUMPH!
Such a fantastic account of a series I’ve loved since the 80s. Thank you so much for this!!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! I had a lot of fun putting it all together!
Sorry but the video you just watched was an illusion devised by Satan. You must watch it again from the beginning.
“Go Ahead Dauntlessly! Make Rapid Progress!” 😂😂
You're criminally under-subscribed, this is top tier content.
Thank you so much!! As long as people are enjoying my videos I’m happy. 🙂
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Really hope we get another entry in the series too. (Would love a physical version of GnG Resurrection too 😅)
Raymoo jumpscare
I loved Ghosts n' Goblins Resurrection. I got it on the Switch at release in 2021. I don't care if some critics didn't like it. I find these days I have to make my own judgments on games because it can be a very personal assessment.
The boss music in Resurrection is infectious.
Could not agree more! I've found as I've gotten older that my tastes often differ greatly than many of the journalists and critics covering games nowadays. I certainly am not influenced by review scores as much as I used to be. And agreed, the GnGR OST is really amazing!
Who cares about critics ( a hand of people mostly frustrated bored ) these days.
Thanks!
Wow, excellent video! So well done and put together. This video shows me I have a lot to learn for my own channel. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, appreciate the kind words! It's definitely taken time to learn how to edit and put these larger videos together so keep moving forward and going strong!
Great work mate, keep the quality up and the subscribers will come!
Thanks a ton, very much appreciated!!
Love the story of this game, I didn't know it had such a colorful history!
It was honestly even more interesting than I expected!
@@RewindArcade you got a preorder for Eternal Darkness? wow, the best game on the gamecube
Thanks so much, really appreciate the kind words! I’m just happy you’re enjoying my videos! 👍
I imagine they didn’t make anymore because Fujiwara left Capcom not long after DC unfortunately.
Amazing game... and that MUSIC!
such an underrated series if you think about it, considering how iconic and well known the image of Sir Arthur in his shining armor is
Definitely! Thankfully we did get a new game a few years ago, but I’m not quite sure how well it actually sold.
Do you think David Siller would agree to sit down and show off and talk about his time making Maximo with you?
I've reached out to a ton of people over the years trying to conduct interviews and clarify facts, but generally no one ever gets back to me. It's been incredibly depressing and defeating, but when you run a TH-cam channel with less than 10K subs, I suppose it's not all that surprising.
@@RewindArcade I understand. that hurts my heart too.
This and Bionic Commando were 2 of my favorite games on the NES.
You have good taste! Bionic Commando is my favorite NES game of all-time. I did play a lot of GnG on there too though, haha.
Yes great picks! At least BC was beatable lol.
@@Nitecrawler82 And a much better game, on the NES at least, haha!
@@RewindArcade Facts! The arcade Bionic Commando is 🚮
@@Nitecrawler82 😆 very true!
You deserve all the praise you are receiving for this wonderful documentary. Bravo, and thank you for taking us "down memory lane" while also raising awareness of this beloved franchise.
Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words! It was certainly a labor of love and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Every design idea with this game seems to make it want to be absolutely hatred.
This game is some sort of proto-deamon/dark souls game.🤔
Before there was souls there was this
On one hand, they're nothing alike. On the other hand, they're really similar
This video is Now a part of History of the Series!! Perfect my Friend!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!!
Dude this video totally took off! So happy for you and very well deserved.
Thanks a ton man, really appreciate you giving it a shout out!!
Bruh this was immaculate! Especially pointing out all the cameos at the end! Fire! Good shit my G! I hope capcom sees it!!
Thanks man, really glad you like it!! The cameos section was definitely the most fun part to put together. 👍
I am only a couple minutes in, but I just subbed. The production value is excellent and I am looking forward to seeing what else this channel has to offer.
I appreciate the kind words and thanks for the sub! Hope you enjoy my other videos.
Thanks a ton, appreciate the kind words! The intro was a ton of work to put together, but I had so much fun making it. Thanks for watching!
Again, you're giving one of my absolute favorite series the Royal Treatment. Congratulations for the amazing piece of work. It really made my day :) I still have to give the Gargoyles spinoff its deserved time and someday I will.
I first saw the Ghosts'n Goblins arcade during a weekend schooltrip to the snow, the bar in the little place we were staying in had it, and I immediately loved its theme and graphics, so a couple of years later, as I got my NES, one of the first games I got was the port of the first game... and I told you before while you were completing it a few months ago... nightmare, addicting nightmare though :)
Ghouls'n Ghosts arcade machine also came into my life placing itself in a bar next to my school, and we'd spend hours watching people play it on Friday afternoons :) When we got the Megadrive port, I got to play it and it totally felt like the arcade... until you started a discussion with your gamer friends on how the backgrounds in the arcade were more rich and that faraway tree moves in the arcade but doesn't in the Megadrive version... we were like that, so when I saw the PCEngine port in magazines I almost ate the pages in wanting that port lol
I got Super Ghouls'n Ghosts for the SNES on Xmas 92 and I absolutely loved it to bits, and it was the first time I completed a GG game legit :)
Don't want to make it too long, sorry, but it's such an iconic series, I was ecstatic to read that, a few months after I was wishing for a new entry in the series, since it had been too long since the PSP GG, GG Resurrection was announced.

Congratulations on, and thank you for, making the single best Ghost n' Goblins video on the internet.
I really appreciate the kind words! I'm a big fan of the series so a lot of love went into this one. Thanks so much for watching!
Very detailed video of Ghost n goblins . I really loved the video . Also happy to know, this franchise still alive.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I’m a huge fan so it was really fun putting this one together.
That intro slaps. Your editing it top tier.
Thank you, much appreciated!
This was such an amazing experience, thank you for delivering this deep dive!
Thank you so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it!!

Brilliant upload, i was fascinated for the entire 1 hour duration...I'm one of the players of the original game from back in the day (still permanently scarred) and had no idea it was still even going, i think i'll invest in the latest Switch adaptation of the game. Cheers mate.

I definitely feel you on struggling to find time to play games. I’m planning on trying to tackle more retro stuff I missed in the past in 2023.
Thanks a lot for this work. This is my favorite franchise!
Thank you, appreciate you watching! It’s one of my favorites series too. 👍
I had no idea there were so many different titles in the series. Thank you! I remember the first two in the arcade. Later, their ports and finally, Resurrection.
Yeah, there’s surprisingly quite a few games in the series. I learned a lot making this video. Thanks for watching!
Awesome documentary! What a great series to focus on. I hope you will do more!
Thank you so much! More are definitely on the way, they just take a while to make, haha.
Very comprehensive video, really good
Thanks so much!
Another good video . I’ll be checking even more of these out
Thank you so much!!
That's one hell of a career for Fujiwara. Nice retrospective!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, Fujiwara was such a huge part of video game history. I feel like he doesn’t get enough credit these days next to people like Miyamoto, Inafune, and Mikami.
Great video! Watched it all the way through
Thank you, much appreciated!!
This is top quality content! Congraturation 🔥
Thanks a ton, really appreciate it!! This story is happy end. 😂
Amazing work. Highest tier quality documentary! Thank you!
Thank you so much, really glad you enjoyed it!!
great video, thanks for putting it together!
Thank you, appreciate you watching!!
"Conglaturation", Chris : you made a good summary of this fantastic saga !
Thank you, much appreciated!! “This Story Is Happy End.”
Ah yes, the true grandfather to the Dark Souls genre. Excellent documentary sir! Bravo.
Thank you, really appreciate it!!
This video is incredible, how have I only just found this channel??
Thanks so much, really appreciate it! I’m actually a relatively new channel on TH-cam. 😅
Excellent work man!
Thank you!
