- I've been asked many times which systems can control what engines, so here's a video that will hopefully answer those questions. Enjoy. Check out my train blog at www.ericstrains.com

Videos are still helpful more than a decade later! Great content eric!
I know this video is old but I'm coming back to the hobby. I had to get out of it around 2005 for life reasons and now I got more time. This video was so helpful!!! Thank you!
Thank you Eric for this video. This helps tremendously as I run both MTH and Lionel.
Excellent Explanation of these 2 different power control systems. Kudos to you!
excellent explanation of these three systems.. I am one of those brand new to O scale guys you referred to in this video.. so, this was very informative and helpful.
Just ordered up a Legacy command system, this video was very helpful, thank you for putting this up!
Hello Eric, just wondering if you could help me. I run Lion Chief, Lion Chief + 2.0 locomotives. I also run one MTH Western Maryland RS3, and Williams Erie F3’s. This is my question; I have 2 MTH Z1000 transformers. I want to run a double rail during Christmas season with 4 switches, and 2 sidings. The 4 switches will connect the inner and outer loops together. I know how to isolate, the switches. I’m going to isolate the inside and outside rails at the switches, having polarity properly phased. Will there be a problem for the locomotives and or the transformers while crossing the switches?
Thanks for the information Eric, I recently bought the Legacy System and I plan on buying the MTH System within the next few months. Now I know what I need to do when I get it.
You are a great contributor to our hobby, Thank you!
Eric, Thank you so much for this video! Now I understand clearly what people have been trying to tell me, but couldn't get through my thick skull. ;-)
Lionel
Thanks so much man just getting into Legacy this helps a bunch
Thanks you answered all the questions I needed to know
Big help thanks . Still learning glad have great advice on here .
Eric, very informative for grandad getting back to model trains after a 50 year hiatus! I moved to original TMCC with two CAB1 remotes. Purchased some TMCC and Legacy engines and use it for my 15 remote/wireless switches. Everything is great. Been learning about MTH and frankly wish I knew about it sooner. Regardless, I want to expand with DCS. My intuition is that after I join the systems I'll be able to use the DCS Remote and the CAB1 remotes, correct? 2 grand kids know/ use their own CAB1 and want to make sure the 15 switches on the CAB1 and/or DCS remotes. I'd learn the DCS Remote and use it. Thanks!
I was told explicitly that a MTH Z4000 cannot power a Legacy...so I bought a ZW on ebay. Until I see for myself why, I don't understand why MTH power bricks won't power up Legacy...still waiting on my Lionel "Hybrid" :-) . Very informative video...should answer alot of questions, Eric...thanks!
@97trainman Yes. You can classic TMCC engines with it. You can also run conventional engines with it if you purchase some extra equipment.
Thanks. Well done.
Hey that helped a lot! Thanks!
MTH sells a slightly different cable for the TIU-Legacy connection. The Legacy and/or TMCC base connects to the track via a single wire that goes to the outer rail.
@Trainmaster189 Running two conventional engines on the same track won't damage the engines. The problem is that you have no control over each individual engine. Command control lets you control each engine seperately.
@Trainmaster189 It's not required, but they recommend it so you don't have any interruption of sound if your engine goes over a dead spot on your layout.
thx, helpful information
@Por2gesDiesel If you want to run Legacy/TMCC engines on your layout, just get the Legacy command base and remote and hook it up to the output channel of the TIU. It's pretty simple.
You still need the Cab1 Remote to set some features like setting a speed limit on TMCC engines which you can't do with the DCS remote.
@DEATHWISHYT2 The legacy wire can be connected to the ground wire on the output side of the TIU.
Eric, I am confused! I first got a Legacy locomotive with the cab1 and the other part that came with the cab1. I changed my track to mth Realtrax and I wired my wires from underneath the table. Now I noticed the track has cutouts for parts that you slide in the side that have lights and connect the negative and positive wires. Now I bought a new mth locomotive that I would like to run at the same time. My question is, do I disconnect the wires under my layout and add a lot more of those pieces that slide into the side of the rails? Cause of right now I don't get any smoke or sounds. Plus I would like to get the mth dcs controller. I hope you can help me. I love watching your TH-cam videos! You are so down to earth and explain everything.
Very informative video- great job! Iam planning on getting DCS- can you run conventional trains-you can run them without being programmed into the system right?
Ok, i am buying 2 or 3 Legacy engines, but will be buying tons or Proto 2 and 3's, i have the DCS, do you think i should also get Lionel's legacy controller to access all of the legacy features, like quill able whistle?
thanx very very helpful
@PMJCoasterDesign you can use the ZW
Watching this now because I got a cab2 remote..... now base 3 is about to drop lmao 🤣 way too many systems and I'm very new to the hobby. I've learned that having the remote is nicer than doing it through my phone. Cab2 is considered obsolete when it's actually not in my opinion.
Hi Eric, I just purchased a Lionel Heisler and want to run it on my DCS powered layout. This marvellous video of yours explains how to do it easily, however I am a bit confused as to the part number of the 'Lionel command base' given that they are old and no doubt came in many revision levels etc. Which unit do you recommend I purchase? Part number?
Keep up the good work on your videos... they are very professional. Cheers Pete from Sydney
Yes, you can.
TMCC trains do have a train brake. It's just a button on the Cab 1 remote instead of it being a scroll wheel.
Commenting on every ericstrains video 86
@97trainman I'm not entirely sure as I do not run conventional engines on my layout.
Yes.
Is this cable you speak of either of the ones that come with the original lionel remote or the Legacy ? Or is it something entirely different ?
So if you connect the legacy to dcs can you still use the legacy controller or do you have to use the dcs controller because that’s what’s hooked up to the track?
Eric I have a question regarding the MTH DCS Commander Controller. Is it possible to hook that up to the Lionel TMCC Classic Power instead of the legacy?
CSX2057 Yes.
@Trainmaster189 I've never heard of that. You should be able to use Lionel trains with an MTH transformer without any issues. It's just a transformer.
I’m new Eric, what are all the thing on the right, left and middle. You can use a remote? Two last questions now, can I use a remote with all these systems and can all these systems and remote be used with old time track?
@MthRailFanatic Yes, you can.
@edhayes311 If you've got legacy, you don't need the old TMCC command base.
What Lionel command base (model number) would you recommend for my DCS system so I can run lionel TMCC? When shopping for them, I notice multiple product numbers. Thanks!
When controlling Legacy locos with DCS, do you have to place 9V betteries when operating them?
@esiegel76 Im sorry, I didnt understand something. Can you quill the whistle/ horn on normal TMCC engines with the legacy remote?
TIU/TMCC 6' Connector Cable
What is the name or part number of that cable that connects the TIU to the tmcc base?
can you retrofit purely conventional locomotives to use TMCC/Legacy?
Eric, In conventional transformer powered layouts, do you know why I cannot mix Lionel locos with MTH transformers?
Is it possible to lashup MTH dcs and lionel Tmcc locomotive to pull the same train.
What is the name or model number for the wire that connects the DCS TIU to the Lionel Legacy controller? Also does MTH or Lionel make the wire?
eric how do u add a legacy engine on dcs wifi i really am struggling with this
In conventional transformer control, can you run 2 MTH engines on the same track? Can it damage both engines?
@MthRailFanatic Right.
Eric - I have an MTH z4000 transformer, a TIU, and a DCS remote w/ base. I want to run my Legacy, TMCC, and DCS locos on the layout. I know this is possible because of your video. Can you please tell me what Lionel products I need in order to do this. Is it simply the Legacy remote and base or do I need anything else. Thanks so much.
@esiegel76 if i run TMCC locos, and buy the legacy system,i have to switch the legacy to TMCC setting right.?
Can I operate the the track switches with the DCS remote?
Dear Friend: I have a question, may I connect Lionel Legacy System in my layout to operating Legacy and TMCC Engines, and, in the same layout connect MTH DCS to operating MTH & Conventional Engines? I am thinking in connect both in my MTH Z-4000. I hope you can help me. Best regards from Mexico.
ERIC, I WANT TO CONVERT OLDER TWO RAIL O GAUGE LOCOMOTIVES TO TMC. I FOUND THE ELECTRIC RR CO CRUISE COMMANDDER M DIESEL ODYSSEY LOCO AND THEY HAVE A SOUND UNIT. ARE THERE OTHER SYSTEMS AND HAVE YOU SEEN AN INSTALLATION VIDEO? DCS FOR EXAMPLE?
Do you think if i bought a legacy bace (#990) that it would be able to power 75 feet of track in a loop, and good enough to run 2 of lionel's new ES44AC diesels without them dimming down?
How to setup Lionel Tmcc base with Mth dcs system thanks John
(I know this is old and will probably not be answered) is it possible to convert an MTH to LCS?
@austrobb yes
Do you need a tiu to use the dcs remote?
if you have a powered legacy engine can you lash that up with an mth non powered engine? thank you for the video
can i buy a dcs remote but not a tiu and use the receiver that comes with a starter set
@nukinfuts1000
"Normal" TMCC units don't have the quillable whistle/horn feature. Only Legacy units let you do that.
in a nutshell...yes. Like I said, until I start messing with my Legacy (still in the box), I won't know what they were talking about. Assuming they are wrong like your saying, my ZW can power accessories and the like...no biggie
I'm Just A Little Confused. If You Have Dcs And If You Have Legacy When You Hook Them Up Can You Still Use The Legacy Remote Even If You Have Dcs?
can you operate non legacy lionel trains with the legacy transformer?
TMCC Controls: Hornby O Gauge, Conventional, TMCC, and Legacy locomotives. (Conventional [including Hornby O Gauge] needs a PowerMaster or TPC to be operated by TMCC Remote)
Legacy Controls: TMCC and Legacy no conventional.
@ELMSLines I wouldn't buy a legacy engine without having the legacy system. You just miss out on too much cool stuff without it.
can you connect the actual legacy command base to dcs not tmcc
@spartan0738 The Legacy base does not power the track. You need a transformer for that.
Can the TIU control the Lionel ZW-c (Celebration) since it is a tmcc unit?
I don't think so.
Do you mean that someone told you that a MTH Z4000 cannot be used to power a Legacy engine???? That's completely incorrect.
I would like to get the mth dsc for ho trains 1 Train I have right now is just dc do they make a DCC chip I can put in there that will work with dcs
Would legacy also control atlas trains
eric you can run non-tmcc engines with tmcc u just need a PowerMaster or a TrackPower Controller or you can install a TMCC chip inside the engine. [you probably know this but Im just reminding you]
Can to still run conventional engines with these
@CookiesAndGuns95 The MTH system will run any Proto-Sound 2.0 engine. No, they should not interfere.
@esiegel76 what type of equipment?
ok i figured that thanks lol
Can the tmcc run mth
What about Lionchief?
The complete system run about $299.
What is the cost to each?
Buy the Legacy system if you don't have
MTH
Do you have wiring diagram
@esiegel76 Thanks!
or you can get Legacy Cab-1L. The cheaper version of Legacy.
You don't have to have a Z4000, you can use almost any transformer.
Can you run legacy engines with a conventional transformer.
Logan Reichert Yes but you can't access all the features.
Thanks matt
Logan Reichert You're welcome.
Eh when I get older my collection will be just TMCC engines and non-TMCC engines only. No Legacy whatsoever on my future layout.
no because you can't program the remote into the command base for the starter set
@railfan845 No. Legacy will only control Legacy and TMCC engines.
Lionel
No, he's speaking of a special connecting wire.
nvm
