MTH DCS Explorer, Setup and Tutorial - My First DCS Interface

- Welcome back to the train room for another quick tutorial! Today we’ll be setting up the DCS explorer from MTH.
The DCS Explorer allows for the operation of DCS equipped locomotives via Wi-Fi or network connection instead of using a TIU or WIU setup from MTH.
NOTE - this requires a smart phone/ tablet that is able to download the MTH DCS Wi-Fi app that is FREE.
NOTE - the Explorer is for basic DCS functionality and does not allow for all the same features as a full TIU / WIU setup - this includes engine sounds, chrono , engine hours , trip and other diagnostic features like battery health or signal strength.
NOTE - the Explorer DOES allow you to setup DCS locomotives in the App and Does allow for engines to be reset to factory settings which is helpful in case of glitches. For example - newer PS3 engines may get stuck in DCS mode when trying to run conventionally - this requires a factory reset and can be done with the explorer.

Great video! How do you hook this up when you already have a ZW and legacy base hooked up to the tracks? Do you power down the ZW and legacy base before powering up the Explorer and MTH power brick?
Thanks for watching! In that case I’d recommend getting the new MTH system that is coming out or find a TIU with WIU. For MTH I’d only recommend powering their command systems with a Z-1000 brick or Z-4000 transformer.
I expect we will discuss this in detail tomorrow evening……..

Enjoyed the video. Thank you. I am in the UK with a 50hz power supply rather than your 60hz supply. Can not see anything in the instructions to say if the unit is 50hz compatible. Does any one know if the unit will work on the UK 50hz supply?

@NixCrossing Good video. Sadly mine isn't working. Same setup as you. 3 minutes powered on, still NO track light. Fire up the app on my iPad, add engine, nothing found, track light is purple. Already checked the fuse, powered off and on again, reset app, reset button on DCS Explorer. Same results :( Ideas?
Purple means the track is online / powered , I would check your app settings to make sure that it’s set as “DCS Explorer” instead of “WIU”. I’d also see if the voltage is hot on the track. A red track light is present when the track is overloaded or not powered yet
Do you know if this works with Proto 1? I have a few of them and this would be good to use with them as well.
Unfortunately not because proto 1 are conventional engines. I would recommend buying an MTH Z1,000 transformer
Just be cautious. I used this with the power pack that came with it, DC I believe and toasted my hot bearing car. Explorer will do both AC or DC.

They are good but when I had one I did fry it with too many amp!!! Smoke came out of it everywhere. Ooooooch

I wish l would have known Nix l would have Sold you 1 ,l bought several dcs Systems with the Remotes and Tui and l have dcs WiFi Box like that 1 as Well and I got Several New 990 Lionel legacy Systems as Well as tmcc and the legacy blue Sets that are Lionel legacy also that look like the tmcc but blue in color that's say legacy
