Miku the band creator worked in a Maid cafe which is a thing in Japan. She took the idea to the record company and they said go for it. She recruited Kanami, Kanami recruited Akane, Akane got Misa who was hesitant to wear the out fit. Miku was the original singer the she recruited Saiki who was hesitant to wear the outfit as well. I am sure someone else can explain it better but there is some good documentaries on TH-cam for each band member. Hope I got this correct 🍺
As @BillHallisey said, the footage is from their very first overseas appearance at the 2016 Sakura Con in Seattle. You really should check out Ohrenje's great series of documentaries about each of them to truly understand the band and how it came together. An enjoyable reaction, as always. 👍
Even then, the Maids sold out venues. I believe the footage from this music video is from their concert trip to Seattle, Washington. Miku Kobato worked in a Japanese Maid Cafe in Tokyo before becoming an idol contest winner. She didn't really want to do idol work and sold her management company the idea of young women wearing cute maid costumes playing hard rock music. The "gap" as she called it was a gimmick to surprise the audience by what they were looking at was not what the expected through the music. The management company agreed and she was off to the races to recruit bandmembers. Once you attend a Band-Maid concerts, you realize that you are in the presence of musical greatness, with humility.
Great again #Sohum ! You asked several questions throughout this reaction, and there is a place you can find all of your answers.. *The wonderful Ohrenje's docu-series out there* that has been a few mentions of them in these comments 🙂🙂
Founder Miku worked in Maid Cafes in her home town and in Tokyo. That's when she came up with the idea. She won an idol competition but quit after a year because she didn't like singing idol music. She went to a Label and pitched her idea and they liked it. However, it's very luck that their first MV went viral. Otherwise, Management was going to fire the Musician and turn the two singers into DANCE-MAID. Miku and Saiki both cried, "We did not come to Tokyo for this!". Luckily, it was the most viral Music Video they ever did. It even out did 'Unleash' their second more viral video. The footage for this one is from their very first North American appearance the anime festival Sakura-Con in Seattle. But if you're on a mission to spread peace and love then you should do one of Miku's solo songs, 'PEACE&LOVE" by Cluppo.
A Band Maid song is more like an opus than simply a song. I'm deeply thankful for a "busy" Band Maid song. Kanami's musical genius sees to it that no note is left unattended to or just "thrown in". Even the early songs they didn't write are thoroughly "Maidified" !! 🤯❤️
Before Yesterday is one of my favorite Band Maid songs. Not your typical kick ass Band Maid, but more of a melodically written song for Band Maid. Not technically difficult for them, BUT Kanami doesn’t let you forget, this song is still Band Maid with my favorite 20 to 30 seconds of any Band Maid song with an awesome solo. These ladies are the best ever!! ❤❤. Great react.
They played this earlier this year at the Yokohama Spinoff concert, best version and it was a real treat to hear it amongst many other treats. Fantastic streamed concert which deserves to be released on DVD/Bluray
A thing about the maid outfits, Sohum: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!
Great reaction and as others have mentioned this was their first trip oversea to the US back in 2016. As for Saiki's voice, she was having a lot of problems around that time that progressively got worst and finally she had vocal cord polyp surgery in summer 2017. Prior to the surgery her voice was lower and raspy. The video is of them sightseeing Seattle. Thanks for continuing to react to Band-Maid.
"Before Yesterday" is track 7 of eight bangers on the Brand New Maid ep/album. It is also one of their mid-tempo progressive hard rock masterpieces, a type of song that is written and played to perfection by Band-Maid. Quite frankly, early Band-Maid is a journey of joyous discovery - that great progressive hard rock is actually still being written and played ... by five incredibly talented Japanese women who, when they go into battle, dress as cafe maids. 🤘🤘💕💕 EDIT: There's no such thing as a "simple" Band-Maid song, because they're always pushing the envelope. But I take your point. I'd just call it "Early," "Middle," or "Later" Band-Maid. Also, this is one of the great early videos of Band-Maid performing. You get to see the Maids - their brilliance, their personalities, and their infectious joy at performing live. It is impossible not to love and adore them!
Here is a mini documentary on Miku, by Ohrenji Channel: Part 1- th-cam.com/video/m0dYUlJ5E60/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6cWuBBub2_KHD38f Part 2- th-cam.com/video/cerctLRhgHE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hAeGq_dvr8AmcmrJ Part 3- th-cam.com/video/RYWUptnlUTo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nxfU_VqFhr51KnFP Very professionally done I might add. There docs for every member so HUGE shout put to Ohrenji and that crew. Musicians understand Band-Maid more than non-musicians.
If you do want to watch the documentaries, please follow the order that makes the most send - start with Saiki, then Kanami, Akane, MISA and finally the three part Miku.
Thanks for the heartfelt reaction. This is an early song by the band, and really melodic and fun. Btw, you should be on air with that voice; you have an ASMR voice lol, very nice to hear. Appreciate your musician's comments on songcraft - they are interesting for music lovers who remained lifelong amateur players like me.
Hello Sohum, I hope you are having a great day. I also hope you have recovered from "Black Hole" with at least some sanity intact. "Black Hole" does take a few listens to fully comprehend. Most or all of the scenes in this video were shot in Seattle, so our favorite Maids were walking in the streets of Seattle while wearing their battle armor. There are several good interviews with Band Maid that are still available on TH-cam, like the Music Gold Rush interview. Also, Ohrenje has mini documentaries of each band member on his TH-cam channel that are roughly 30 minutes each in length with Miku getting 3 roughly 30-minute episodes since she is such a character. Take care and have an awesome week.
Thanks Mark! I appreciate your comment. I took another listen to black hole the other night, with more of an understanding, but its gonna take a few more listens I think haha. Have a great week!
In the case of this video, it wouldn’t have seem unusual as they were @ SakuraCon which, of course, is a CosPlay convention. As to why, I’m sure someone would’ve answered but mine is watch Ohrenje’s documentaries; Saiki->Kanami->Akane->MISA->Miku ☺️
To answer your question about why Maids you must see the youtube video about the members and foundation of the band. Ohrenje made a serie of BAND-MAID Documentary Look this one BAND-MAID Documentary / KOBATO Miku -Part 1-
This is the maid cafe where Miku worked before she left to get into show biz (she won an idol contest), but she decided she wasn't into being an idol so she thought of how cool it would be to have a group of girls dressed in cute maid outfits playing "cool" music (hard rock) so she made the pitch to a management company, and then this community of destiny formed. th-cam.com/video/u90AN5QpbXE/w-d-xo.html

I think the description is accurate. :)
The Time: *March 26th 2016*
The Place: *Seattle, USA*
The Event: *Sakura-con*
This was the first time that *BAND-MAID* performed in the United States.

Before Yesterday I was doing everything I am doing before tomorrow… listening and watching Band-Maid, of course! 🤣🤘Thx, Sohum!
Rock on!
💜💛❤💙💚
I think you are ready for Ohrenje's docu series. Saiki, Kanami, Akane, MISA and 3x Miku
This video was filmed in March 2016 during a performance at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington.

anyone who was old enough to listen to music in late 90s early 2000s this song has a nostalgic feel
My all time favorite
That's Saiki singing over Miku's image in that one shot.
Tono Kanami is a genius. It's an indisputable fact. :)
