Most of the cast were playing their own version of the characters. Karl was actually channeling DeForrest Kelley. Honestly, if he showed up in SNW alongside all the new TOS Enterprise crew, I wouldn't even be a little upset.

@@rcslyman8929 If only. So far they've done a great job casting the original crew on SNW, Scotty was excellent last season. Karl Urban would definitely be the cherry on top.

@@JMO_1976 Yeah, to this point, I've liked the new casting. Paul Wesley took a minute, but he's done well as Kirk during Season 2. Martin Quinn, though... he went over and above as Scotty. Even mimicking Jimmy Doohan's way of holding his hands to hide his missing finger from the camera. Karl would fit right in, but I doubt he would actually step in to do it. But they'll find someone equally fitting if they do bring Bones in, that much I'm sure of.

The Kelvin-timeline is entirely alternate reality, from the moment the Kelvin is destroyed onwards.
The supernova in the prime timeline occurs in 2387, which is 8 years after Nemesis, which takes place in 2379.
So thankfully they found a way to do the new trilogy without really interfering with any of classic trek, which still exists in the original timeline.

"Is the parking brake on?" is actually a clever prank from Captain Pike.
When he asks Sulu the question, this prompts Spock to ask if the external inertial dampener or loosely translated, "the outside device that stops the ship from moving/drifting." It really is the parking brake of the ship.
Pike knew exactly what stopped his ship from going to warp. Rather than directly say so, he wanted to see if Sulu would figure it out until Spock decides to just be upfront about it. Look at his relaxed posture when Sulu preps the ship for warp a second time. He's not angry or disappointed. He's casually having a small moment of Captain's fun, helping a colleague instead of directly ordering him; all the while watching Sulu try to fix the problem.
It's also worth mentioning, if Sulu hadn't forgotten to disengage the parking brake, the Enterprise would have arrived at Vulcan at the same time as the rest of the fleet and possibly would have gotten destroyed.

In 2013 I was covering the Tribeca Film Festival as a red carpet photographer, when I met an actress promoting a film called "Raze". My buddy and I interviewed and photographed the cast and producer, and were subsequently invited to the wrap party by the producer. I got a chance to talk for some time with her, and I told her I was a big fan of her sci-fi series "Continuum", and told her that I remembered her from her first TV starring role in a series called "The Inside". She was incredibly sweet and gracious, and posed for a photo with me (I got my buddy to use my camera) - probably my favourite photo I ever took with an actress. It wasn't until 2 or 3 years later that I realized that she, , was the green girl that Kirk was making out with in Uhura's room!

On a technical note, this Enterprise seems so slow and lumbering because it's significantly bigger than the original - the Kelvinverse Enterprise is 720-ish meters long, which makes it almost three times the size of the original's 288.6 meters. Shatner's Enterprise would barely be the length of the saucer section, and even Picard's Enterprise E is slightly smaller. This makes it the largest Enterprise at time of release, and third largest Enterprise overall.
Yes, the Supernova still happens. For what results from this and what happens afterwards, see Picard, season 1.
