    Well this is a deal breaker for me. Watching Ozark on my LG G1 was unbearable at times with the dimming ,which I didn't notice so much on my LG C9. Thanks so much Vincent for the heads up with this huge change . Once again consumers are always on the short end of the stick . Hopefully ,there's a work around.

      I'm using CX as PC monitor and TPC was a nightmare until I disabled it. I wanted to wait for C3 or G3 launch to buy it as replacement for few other TV sets I have but now I know I will never do that. Thanks Vincent.

      Its surely due to the EU power regulation. LG is forced to do so. Same as engine exhaust noise.

      It seems higher the number less and less control and features you get: C2: No BFI 120Hz.... now C3 has NO TPC/APL control. Pretty “cool” LG?!

    This sucks. If the option remains available to Hollywood studios then it should be available to consumers as well. Otherwise they’re going to be grading content in a way that doesn’t reflect how it actually looks on any retail LG OLED

      It looks like they just added a second password that gives you the full service menu, and changed it so the old password gives you no options to change anything now. I'm sure the new password will leak, or someone will look in the firmware and find it.

      It's also only a 4 digit password. If you knew 10 people that had the TV and had an automated way of trying combinations, you could have the password in a few hours.

    I understand closing the loophole to push a C2 into behaving like a G2, but to remove controls for TPC and GSR that's going too far

      ​@@dante19890c3 is inferior in some ways intact c2 also is as both are missing BFI at 120hz but cx and c1 have it. BFI to me is a game changer especially at 60 to 120hz

      ​@@malazan6004 yup C1 is the best so far in my opinion, thanks to 120Hz BFI (mostly only relevant for high-end PC gamers who can run their games at stable 120fps). I bought two C1s to keep one as a backup!

    This is a deal breaker. The only reason why I would've chosen the lg is to be able to turn off auto-dimming. Looks like the c2 is going to skyrocket in price and sell like hot cakes now

    Horrible decision by LG unless they (as you said) fixed this or added something else in the menus. I was gunning for a C3 77" and was looking forward to not having a black screen for 5 seconds every time I start my AppleTV (as it is on my C1 65"). Now I'm considering buying a C2 instead and living with the black delay. I can't live with dimming.

      LG said the option to disable will be present for Hollywood TVs. Meaning, the C3 and G3 will still dim for consumer products.

      They did this to escape numerous warranty claims since they now cover burn-in.
      Which also tells me they’re afraid obviously, they can’t guarantee burn-in is no longer an issue anymore. It’s pure greed only.

    Thank you for that piece of information! I HOOOOPPPEEE they moved that options to the main menu so we don't need the service menu any more. But I doubt LG would go to this level of customer wish...

      Since I'm not that wealthy, I'll just see for the Samsung one, if it's as bad as the last year model, then I'll stay with my 2016 TV (I need a car too, so whatever it happens it's a win to me).

      ​@@rahb2096 I'm really concerned about the bent panels, I don't live in a first world country, here in México companies can easily ignore you if they can because going to the authority is a pain in the *ss, I'm waiting for filling a claim against a retailer who refused to exchange a RAM kit I tested with Memtest, while they tested it with the Windows built-in software. The RAM was "just" $175.00 USD, imagine if the same happens with a $1500.00 USD TV. That's why I'm so concerned about its quality, the rest can be solved, just as you said.

    Why do LG keep cripping or removing feature from the sets? First they hobble BFI, now they force you to accept auto dimming. As someone who's still waiting for his plasma to die before replacing it with an OLED, this is making me hope it holds on for many more years...

    How to check the chip type:
    1. Open TH-cam.
    2. Within TH-cam go to Settings (TH-cam settings, not the TV settings) > App version
    3. Under Device, the chip type should be listed.

    My LG B9 auto dimming was absolute deal breaker. I disabled it year ago. If they do not have the option of disabling it in the future I will not buying their tvs.
    Or fix the algorythm that it will NEVER dim a MOVING IMAGE.

    As someone who purchased a G3, this is infuriating. If you own the tv, you should be able to do what you want with it. If LG is concerned, then they just need to invalidate warranty claims for people who disable auto dimming. I just cant believe we are in 2023 and are still wrestling with auto-dimming. I have not had much time with my tv but truly hope they have resolved the prior issues with it.

    This was a big advantage over other oled brands. Bad move unless they don't really dim now.
    You can't game on an oled with dimming.

    this is one of the deal breakers for OLEDs in general, I honestly don't know why manufacturers haven't figured out a sweet spot for the TPC algorithm after 10 years of OLED TVs on the market

      And it is not even needed. I disabled the TPC on my 2015 model when i got it
      And i h have been using it as an monitor with crazy hours on it since then with zero burn in.
      Just don't run it on max OLED light 24/7, don't let it get to hot and use basic burn in strategies like screen savers and dark mode in apps.
      Without TPC off no scene is stable and your calibration is pretty much useless.
      And the strict ABL on the OLED already males the calibration less than stable.
      But with TPC on it gets so dark you don't see anything.
      It is pretty much unusable and jarring to see it just dim whenever SO MUCH.

      @@semahj Honestly that is a very small price to pay for FAR superior picture quality. Using a shitty LCD panel in anything after getting used to perfect inky blacks and infinite contrast of the OLED is a struggle, it just looks so incredible bad when you know how an OLED screen can display content. Also, I have never even been close to wanting more light output anyway. Why blast your eyes with more damaging blue light than necessary.

      @@cajampa just because you can't recognize burn-in doesn't mean you don't have it. all OLEDs will get burn-in, and all of them have burn-in to a certain degree. that's how OLEDs work, each LED is alive and has its own life span, so it dies at a different rate compared to its neighbors. that's what burn in is.

    I consider this a design flaw. If during normal use the image can darken when it shouldn't then suddenly brighten that's a flaw to me. LG should allow this to be disabled and if they want even give a warning that it may degrade the panel and isn't covered under warranty. The end user should be allowed to decide if they want this on or off.

    As an owner of a Sony A80J who plays games, ABL is definitely the only thing I absolutely hate about the TV. I wouldn’t get another OLED if I couldn’t turn this off and just take the risk (which is at least lower on recent sets).

    Looking forward to your thorough test of the G3/C3 when you have a unit. The auto-dimming issues caused by ASBL/GSR....etc are possibly going to put me off investing in a G3 if they cannot be turned off in the service menu.

    This should be alarming for anyone who already has a C2 as well. They could just push an update at any time taking away this option, which is more likely now that they already have a webos build without
    I'll definitely read up on any updates that will be coming for my C2 going forward (should be doing that anyways)

      You mean the C3? You can turn off the default auto dimming on the C2 in the service menu.

      ​@@BusterDarcythere's a hack you can use to get into that menu, using the TV's browser to reach a website that allows you to access the menu where GSR and APL can be disabled. That's how I did it. You don't need the service cpnstrol remote.

    I hope there's another way to do it that we just haven't found yet. I didn't make the change when I first got my C1, but after I noticed the dimming for the first time, I did it right then and there.

      I have the 77" C1 as well and I haven't had that big of an issue with the brightness but I have the one with the WBE or G1 panel. I didn't change anything in the service menu hell I didn't even access it at all and it's noticeably brighter than my buddies C1 guess I got lucky with the panel lottery! 😃

    I don’t know, I deliberately switched the image after playing with the interface and returned back - I didn’t see any difference in brightness. I use OLED CX, I didn’t climb into the service menu at all

      @@Lcss1 Dont recall, I ended up returning it and 2 others due to a flickering issue, 120hz + gsync + vrr +hdr causes flickering, tried many different cables, so did the local best buy. I gave up, settled for the gigabyte M28U and saved the rest for the future release of the rtx 5080 ti

    Got a g3 on sale and happy with it never seen dimming because i dont put it max brightness, my eyes are for life dont fancy wearing shades indoors

      sony tends to lie abt the actual specs of their products DO NOT BUY A SONY TV
      i had the recent sony oled and they claimed it was 4k 120hz, but with both settings on the entire image was blurry and text was hard to read
      they claimed "just put it in 60hz mode or put it in 1080p resolution". Well that would make it NOT a 4k 120hz tv. there is no fix. the lied to my face over and over.
      sony did everything they could to refuse acknowledging the issue was real and dragged their feet to fix the problem, eventually i got 100% of my money back

    Have had my LG C1 for 9 months with 3600+ hours. Only noticed the TPC dimming in the first few months. Since I've never noticed. But recently changed TPC and GSR off. Just in case lol

      ifthe tech is anything like the oled switch, then as wulf dens test shows, you have to leave the thing on a static image none stop for over a year to notice any burn in, and even then its slight.

    I thought something happened to Vincent while explaining TPC. LG needs to add those options to advanced settings for both consumers and commercials. It is sad if LG disabled the current hackable methods of c2 models

    I too was going to pull the trigger on the C3, I just love the inky oled blacks, but not having full control over auto-dimming (and no ATSC at that price) is a deal breaker. I think I'll get the TCL QM8 and save a thousand dollars.

    So you neee that control to turn it off? But what about burn in risk? I have an lg 65 c2. Is it worth ordering that control and turn off the dimming? Or could it damage my tv. I use my tv mostly for tv channels,movies/series and youtube. Not so much sports and gaming.

    I'm a colourist and I was really looking forward to upgrading my CX to a G3 for the heatsink and true 1000 nit brightness capability. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere.... another sale lost (actually two, since I was also going to buy one for home use). Hope LG reverses this and publicizes that fact.     I bought the C3 two days ago and DV looks significantly darker compared to my older C1, or even my CX. Try playing “Ozark” and then you’ll see that Marty’s face looks so dark you can’t even see details on the right side of his face when he’s taking to the clients (first episode). And the clients also look really dark. I’ve made sure all the power saving settings are off, and all the extra settings to “brighten” the picture are on and nothing. Same result. So frustrating. Any one else has noticed something similar?

      The same for me.
      Bought c3 42” and everything is dark.
      Warning: not access with “new method” service menu because the settings will reset when you reboot the tv.
      Hope that launch another update with better brightness control.
      Everything is darker here, my b9 is 1000x better.
      Just paid 1000u$ for c3 42” (Brasil) and very disappointed.

    Hollywood studios should be forced to watch with this auto dimming on. Also, this algorithm seems really, extremely dumb. Why would they dim down the image when the picture is dark anyway? What are they trying to prevent?!

      burn-in. as much as people like to pretend that it isn't an issue, the myriad protections and mitigations they have in place show that it is indeed still a problem. they're slapping band-aids on top of five other band-aids trying to fix it and people keep disabling them so i can see why they just removed the ability to circumvent their mitigations entirely, even if i dont agree with it.

    I have been watching reviews of LG C3 on youtube to help me decide whether I should be getting one as my gaming monitor but with this useful info from HDTVTest, I think I should give up and move on to the next potential model/brand in my list. LG, great job for persuading me not to buy your product. Auto dimming is a joke.

    Is there a way to permamently disable TCP on Philips? I have OLED 803 from 2018, there is a service menu with Oled TPC setting, but it restores each time you turn off the tv. A minor inconvinience but still.

    I have been noticing this weird dimming on my LG CX for years now but never turned it off.
    When buying a new TV I would try to get one that doesn't do this, but am unsure. If Samsung QD Oleds also have this and LG still does...that would leave LED TVs, but I am not sure I could go back to backlight issues and all that...

    Buying my first new TV in almost 10 years! I found this channel during my research. My choices were either the LG G3 77", the Sony qd-oled 77" (when its released), or the Samsung qd-oled 77". Now it seems like LG is eliminating itself from contention.
    I will be pairing one of those with either the Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 (when it's released), or the Sony HT-A9 system.

      I’m in the same situation. My soundbar will most probably be the Sennheiser Ambeo Max. Have you checked that one?
      I’m favoring LG because of the 4 HDMI 2.1 ports. But if they don’t change this stuff before May, I will most probably also choose a different brand. What a shame. Was really looking forward to a 77” G3.

      @@ZeoKZ666 I came across the Ambeo Max while collecting reviews, and it seems like it's been significantly eclipsed by Sony's HT-A9. The Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 is making out to be a beast of a game changer (based on initial impression previews). The reviews of the HT-A9 (I don't really consider it a "soundbar") put it in a league of its own, currently.
      Have you looked into either of the two I mentioned? If so, what are your thoughts, and what made you decide on the Sennheiser?

      Do yourself a favor and look at the sheer magnitude of people with defective S95B's. I'd be very hesitant buying a Samsung, because their software updates you can't actually opt out on break stuff frequently as well. Not to mention they sold the tv and made it darker with their updates. Pretty shady practices.

      I’m also in the race for 2023 OLED but I have also Philips MLA model on my list (and Panasonic even though I don’t think they can compete in 77 inc w/o MLA) and in terms of soundbar the Nubert 8500 XS-8500 RC series. But it’s not available everywhere.
      Will have a look on the Nakamichi as well

    Looking for help on LG G3 -When I go into the LG g3 sound, I set up wired speaker eARC pass through. When I turn off the tv, the tv defaults back to the internal speakers. Each time I turn the tv on, i have to go into the audio setting and redo everything. I’m coming from an LG c9 same set up but never had this issue. All HDMI cables are high quality. After I set it up, it works. But I have to redo it every time.
    Set up hdmi1 ps5
    Hdmi2 eARC
    Hdmi3 Xbox
    And I use Apple TV

    This news further confirms my good decision in getting a non OLED monitor Samsung G8 over a OLED TV to be used as a gaming and desktop monitor. No worries about burn in and dimming protocols.

      @@reviewforthetube6485 LG is great because the employees at LG Display create such amazing panels. They're not paying reviewers or plotting some evil agenda to screw the consumers. LG is the forerunner of OLED. Liike one commenter said, they're putting in these safely measures for a reason and that reason is to PROTECT THE CONSUMER. That is the primary reason not because they're afraid of replacing TVs through warranty. Nobody wants to pay a thousand dollars+ then wait 3 weeks for LG to fix the issue. What they just did is akin to a responsible parent making sure the gun is hidden and locked away so they can't hurt themselves.

    You can still disable TPC on the updated G3 but I think that would jeopardize your 5 year panel warranty.

    I noticed the service remote is available for purchase, however, the passcode that is required to get the service menu on the TV, is that provided with the purchase of the remote?
    My LG OLED E6 (still working fine) does in fact do this auto dimming when watching dark scenes in media content and drives me nuts and never knew that this was occurring cause the enabled "feature". A response will be greatly appreciated.
