you also have to check the in game settings, i know in red dead redemption 2 they have a stupid setting called cinematic mode in the HDR settings and you cannot lower the levels at all so it makes the game look dry and greyed out. HAHA i remember at launch it was terrible because it was the only setting but rockstar fixed it a week later and added a new setting called game setting or something where you can change the blacks and whites and paper whites whatever that is. it was a huge game changer since cinematic mode literally washed out all the colors and made the screen seem like it was losing brightness but it was really the game setting. most people kept HDR off until the patch was released to fix it.

@@thebigbient8736 Yes, but only on an oled as it can show true blacks under HDR in real content. Every lcd isn't capable of that. Would be interesting to know for people out there with lcds (the majority for sure) how they should adjust the last setting.
I’m using the Hisense U8H (mini-lcd/quantum dot. Just an amazing budget tv that I believe you can get before your flagship tv lines) and I can 100% agree with these settings. And I made sure to test it with an amazing game but with a broken HDR (Resident Evil Village) and it was the best when trying different (a little higher/lower than the first image that peeks/clips). If anyone finds this helpful with that tv, it’s 16 clicks up from the bottom for the first and second screen, then set the last all the way down as low as you can go. The best part about that TV’s game mode, it actually show what it’s running at on screen (nothing real in depth) but most importantly, it has where you can also control your whites and black if you want to get it REAL perfected. Thanks again for this.
I'm sure I watched it but I'm not sure if he did a deep dive like this. I want to know if I should be setting the Xbox brightness just past 'barely visible' . Maybe Xbox hdr cal doesn't have the issue Playstation does?
@@interlake2043 They are wrong, he didn't go through the HDR calibration tool with the Canon for the Xbox like he's doing here, I hope he does as this is telling us exactly what the nit value is for each increase/decrease, which is helpful for those of us without HGIG displays as the tv's tone mapping is constantly fighting to preserve the detail, which hurts the tool's effectiveness.
My lg c1 doesn't like these settings. I had to use the ps5 suggested settings. Dead Space had crushed blacks and the highlights were blinding. After returning to ps5 suggested settings it looked perfect.
Thanks not sure if it made a huge difference but I had to change the HDR settings 50+ times in the first week. The perfectionist in me just felt like there had to be a better way than "set it when barely visible" Barely visible isn't very specific. That’s how I calibrated my PS4 Pro as well. Clipped just one step above when the sun was barely visible. (Just one step down for the shadows) Edit: After watching the full video I realized that we should be turning the shadow all the way down to get pure blacks.
@@Joshsmoove In theory, yes. Since black should always be (0,0,0) no matter what TV type you’re using. OLED or QLED. If it looks way too contrast-y, like you’re losing details in the shadow areas, then change it back.
What If I just have a gaming monitor with HDR400? 🤣 Maximum peak 450 or 500? Do I have to make the first sun more visible than it is already to try it in a correct way? 😆
Bullcrap. Dragging to minimum is moving the PS5 black threshold below the black threshold of the TV. The TV black cannot get any darker. It just drags the dark greys towards black making the overall image too dark. That is not calibration.
@@manyakgaming1346 HGIG looks way too dark in a majority of games like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, or Demon’s Souls. I have a Sony A8H and when gaming in HDR the brightness level looks equivalent to what my LG CX shows when DTM is on. What’s the point of HDR then if it just looks like SDR when HGIG is on?
HGIG isn’t good ☝️ It’s to dark and the Picture isn’t popping 🤗 I don’t use HGIG in also in Cod Cold War , there is it okay , but for the others is mapping better ☝️
I love HGIG in Cold War. Have you calibrated the HDR like the video states with HGIG enabled prior? Before I did what Vincent suggest my image was too dim but now it’s pretty close to Dynamic Tone Mapping on but without the overshoot on some of the brighter stuff.
Adjust the HDR on the first two pages right before the sun logo disappears or on the level where it DOES disappear (Meaning Either/Or. When you can’t see it anymore OR the last brightness level before you can’t see the sun logo) and for the third page for adjusting, use the very darkest option so that you have true blacks on your LED TV because OLED TV’s turn the pixels OFF individually when it comes to black colors. Yes I know very fancy, love today’s technology ages.
I have an A80J. Should I turn off gradation preferred (TV) before adjusting HDR settings on PS5? To have the symbol disappear it's 15 clicks with gradation off but with it on there's a few more clicks.
Hey do these same rules Apply to Dynamic Tone Mapping as well or just HGIG? Many games on the Next Gen consoles unfortunately don't have HGIG support and it's a little frustrating to swap between DTM and HGIG and also adjusting the HDR Values each time between different games

I think it's essentially the same since the Xbox calibration menu will ask you to adjust the slider until the logo is NOT visible anymore. Unlike the PS5 which tells you to adjust it to make the logo only barely visible. So my guess is you can just follow the instructions on the Xbox calibration menu as it tells you the same as this video.

Awesome thanks. I always disliked this method of HDR calibration because it always felt like guess work. I like things a little more precise and this definitely helped. Btw, it works on PC too for anyone interested. One of hing I'm not sure if you mentioned is whether to set monitor color space to auto or native. I've heard it's a preference thing, but native seems more accurate. Thanks again.
So basically the jist is to do the first 2 steps one below "barely visible," essentially creating a half clip (assuring they're both exactly the same as well) and the last one at full darkness; with the additional (granted you're playing games) setting of the RGB range to full, manually, instead of auto? I want to ask a question. I followed all your videos to get the best picture for gaming on my PS5 and LG OLED CX. But I always struggle what to do with the options all the games offer. Should I let them as standard or do I adjust per game?
Great video Vincent. Side note, it may be beneficial to get commentary from Sony as they may be applying an offset of +1 or -1 on the values input by the user to align with the original guidance from the HGIG group (I.e. they could have assumed the user would find it easier to set at “barely visible” and then notch it one more to the clipping point due to some case studies showing people went too far on average).
This. These recommendations are based on the assumption that the selected value is not "modified" compared to what you see in the calibration screen. I'd want confirmation as it is easy for placebo to make one think the slight adjustments are indeed better.
Screen 1 and 2: click until barely visible as instructed. Then click once more so it actually vanishes. Screen 3: click as far as you can beyond it vanishing.
@@fatihgoktas8201 When you setup HDR through your PS5 in the console's settings just follow the instructions and disregard this video if you have a Sony TV.
Following both the gaming callibration video and this HDR setting video. I can finally see all the detail in dark areas and dark images. Can't believe I've played games without these settings this whole time!
Screen 1: adjust until the logo just disappears Screen 2: adjust until the logo just disappears Screen 3: Use darkest option unless in a brightly lit room. RGB - leave on automatic for most content.
Could it be that Sony changed the HGIG "rules" of the calibration screen from "till it just disappears" or "no longer visible" to "barely visible", and then automatically add an extra step in brightness to the calibration (14 clicks actually becoming 15), because otherwise people might set it to some random value where the logo is no longer visible which could be way too high? Maybe they thought there was less of a chance for people to mess it up when the directions tell you the logo should be barely visible, instead of not visible, cause there's a whole range of "not visible" they could stupidly choose from.
Thanks for doing this Vincent. I recall spending hours trying to get this right for Control on my PS4 Pro and LG C9 where darker colours were far too black.
Vincent, with the x900f I have to adjust the hdr with xtend Dynamic range enabled since my tv does not have hgig. The first step I leave with the logo almost faded which is correct, the problem is that in the second step the logo already disappears completely when the value should be equal to the previous adjustment as you mention in the video.
I was always under the impression that it's better (recommended even) to set EVERYTHING you connect to a consumer TV to limited (as well as the TV itself) because those screens are designed for limited rgb range. And even though they can display full (and do it well enough) their native range is limited. Am I wrong? Also, "automatic" doesnt always work 100%>
Regarding the RGB setting, your recommendation is to always keep it at Auto (Full) on the PS5? My TV is an LG OLED B6P. Does this mean I should keep the black level at the high setting? Is there any reason to mess with the contrast or brightness settings on the TV? Using the Disney WOW disc, it’s nearly impossible to get the correct brightness/contrast settings to where they should be according to the disc in the game picture mode. Thanks!
Right??? The first planet I started on was so blindingly bright that it actually hurt my eyes and made them sore for a while. Until they fix I’m gonna keep it uninstalled.
Thank you so much! Setting HDR this way fixed the washed out gray colors I've been getting on my trusty old 55Q70R with HDR content. It was so bad I gave up on HDR, but now that it works as it should... what a difference!
In demon’s souls HGIG is clearly too dark when walking in closed areas w/o sunlight, dynamic tone mapping gives better results for shadow detail (LG CX)
You made my picture so much better in my games. I can’t thank you enough man you deserve a freaking award for this video. I’m not even joking. It meant that much to me so thank you.
Answer above by me. Believe it. It's pretty accurate. Use custom (the preset), set local dimming to high, X-tended dynamic range to high, use colour temperature expert 2 (this way the sun logo gets more visible) when you stil barely see the logo click 1up, also on the 2nd image. And the last on all the way to dark. That's what I did at least. After that put your tv back to game mode and only change local dimming to high. Leave colour temperature on expert 1. Checked it on spider-man Miles Morales and Demon's souls. And it looks perfect right now. No whitewash, no black crush. I'm happy right now 😃😎👊🏻
The white point tone mapping granularity was really weird to see. I am still on the base PS4 and it ramps up the brightness much more gradually with every step compared to what the PS5 seems to be doing here. That, along with the non always on/always off nature of the HDR makes it seem like the PS4 had a much better implementation of HDR than the PS5.
i'm so glad I came across your channel. I'll be changing my settings as soon as I get home tonight. I, like everyone else, changed to the WRONG settings. Thank you for sharing!
I’m a bit confused. I adjusted the HDR settings, but then realised I wasn’t on HGIG, and instead was on the default dynamic tone mapping so I put on HGIG and I had to change it drastically compared to my last HDR set up. So will this only work on HGIG? Or can I change back to default tone mapping and the brightness will be perfect? Thanks in advance for any replies.
Bit late lol. Never set any hdr setting in dynamic tonemapping because it means that the tv will always tonemap on the setting. Hgig means that the tv doesnt tonemap, it uses the console/PC data

@@Joshsmoove In theory, yes. Since black should always be (0,0,0) no matter what TV type you’re using. OLED or QLED. If it looks way too contrast-y, like you’re losing details in the shadow areas, then change it back.

Adjust the HDR on the first two pages right before the sun logo disappears or on the level where it DOES disappear (Meaning Either/Or.

Vincent, my tv doesn't have HGIG I think Sony 900e, should I still follow these instructions?
Yes
Thanks!
