36:44 watching an azorius control player scoop after having a single counterspell played against them was the single most satisfying and vindicating thing I have ever seen in my entire life.
Literally, if you counter 5+ spells a game as a control deck, you better be able to take your spells getting answered as well 💀
Ironically counterspells are also the best answer to control decks because they don't usually have a board, which is why tempo decks are so good against control
Removal deck players are just mono red players with a god complex. Just as brain dead.
If you're hoping to draw green mana, it's best to play Plaza even if you don't get the life boost because a tapped green gate will give Plaza green to use right then!
Then he could have just played gond gate at least 2-2 not 4-0 to get untapped gates

@@VictorianoOchoa no offense to any players personally but UW control is the single thing i hate most about magic, just don't even seem to want to play the game half the time
@@lesternomo6578 What do you hate about it? Some of my most fun games were versus UWR control with my aggro deck because the deck challenged me in a way I have not been challenged before.
@@VictorianoOchoa the thing that’s the worst about it to me is when you run into a deck and for the first maybe 20 turns all they play are counters, spot removal, board wipes, and card draw. Sometimes you will run faster than a deck like this and kill them before they can stabilize. Other times they will continue clearing the board and drawing cards while also not seeming to have any sort of win condition. This is what I hate and leads me to view each game as a wager between the time I spend and the fun I will get out of it, with these games just draining me and wasting my time. Not inherent to the color combo but that’s what annoys me

Edit: The Boros Guildgate was Gate #8 and then the Seek gave him Circuitous Route. Casting it and NOT Growth Spiral into Maze's End was 11 Gates and the win.

Guess he got too blinded by the creatures and the need to get rid of them that he forgot to win the game with secondary win condition.
Maze’s End was the first deck I ever tried to construct back when I first started playing around the release of Dragon’s Maze. It’s fun to see all the new options that card has today.
There's even a few more gates in paper that aren't on Arena as well! I remember my friend building a gate deck when I first started playing as well 😁
I remember my first Maze's End deck was in a Turbofog shell.

Gates tends to be randomly strong in some metas. I love the deck: it was my first standard deck, and it has such a wonderful core.
It's because most decks are prepared to answer creatures, don't have answers for lands, gates has wraths and card draw. It essentially functions as a control deck with a combo finish.
The most fun part of this video is all the different ways Seth pronounces Circuitous Route

14:40 you could've won that turn. Play Sircootious Route THEN activate Baldur's Gate, you have enough for Primetime and Maze's End.
Always fetch for gates before using Baldur's Gate!

21:35 You're forgetting: Field of Ruin, Ghost Quarter, and Demolition Field.. all can be activated at instant speed
I threw in a couple Root Maze to make your opponents land to enter tapped as well since almost every land you own comes.into play tapped. Just a thought for the deck

Ooh, this looks like a fun build! I'll put it together today.
Update: built it, played it, ran into enough other Gates decks that I'm tweaking my sideboard to adapt, but got a lot of wins and really enjoy playing it.
Spent the money to get the cards I needed and went straight into historic with it. Went 10 games with only 2 losses. Maze's End has always been one of my favorite alt-win conditions thanks to you way back in the early 2010's. Now I have an all new appreciation for it
14:49- 6 different gates. Float 6 with baldur's, routes up to 8. Tap one to activate a maze up to 9. You have exactly enough to maze for the 10th gate to win right there.

Since the deck has so much inevitability as the game goes long but takes a while to get going, I think more board wipes would be pretty important for helping you stabilize against aggro. Trimming some gatebreaker rams and red removal for something like Temporary Lockdown might make matchups like Soldiers a lot better.

Played this so much in Ravnica standard. Glad to see it has legs in historic.
Gates is my fav deck, has been for a while. The one I'm running now is a different type of win with Omniscience playing my entire deck until I can use Tendrils of Agony to one-shot the opponent. I also run Jace so if I end up milling myself out, I still win. Love the different win conditions with the gates, very fun.
Gates were the first deck I built after a long hiatus from magic, it is always fun to see it in action.

He goes back and forth on thinking he needs 9 or 10 when you activate Maze's End. Screaming at my phone at this one.
Having played my own variant of Prime Time Gates, in place of Ram, Summit and his red removsal, I ran a colourless Karn the Great Creator package (I know, super original). If I feel there's too much aggro in the format it's kinda trivial to add sweepers to this type of deck, so I'm mainly built around being able to toolbox out useful artifacts. Yes, including the One Ring. In a Hammer Time world I'd rather guarantee I buy myself a turn to try and dig my way out of the issue. I will have to think on if Escape can be fit in, that card seems great for the archetype.

I came across this deck playing my LD deck, it was quite the battle destroying the baldurs gate and maze's end and still needing to take out the primeval titan with star of extinction.

so i made this deck, and was having fun but struggling. then i did what a 2023 magic player does, i added my the one ring to the list and boosted myself up the ranks. i also moved the sheep to sideboard and am using the arboreal dude for faster ramping. considering spending my last wc on white leylines, which im also considering maindecking 4. freaking thoughtseizes man.
I played Maze's End Turbo Fog in standard back in the day, this was satisfying to see.
The argument about siding out the ram. I would suggest keeping it to side board out if need be. This is because it's a creature for cheap that gets huge. So in a way, it can be not just a creature removal spell, but several. Also with it having trample, it can ensure threat assessment looks at that creature and not your maze's end. That's at least my two cents.
The control player scooping to Dovin's Veto is wild. He couldn't swallow his own medicine.

Gates are probably the deck I have consistently enjoyed the longest on arena. They are better than ever now.

I play a deck very similar to this in modern. You should have played the ram with prime time in game 1 match 1

Biggest shock of the vid isn't that budget gates crushed everything - it's that he didn't get punished for saying there's no instant land destruction while liquimetal was on the table.
I've beaten Lilly ultimates so many times! I've never known a Lilly player capable of splitting permanents properly.
That Escape to the Wilds was probably the most important card in the deck. Works around thoughtseize and bow master.
I feel like Explore the Underdark, Navigation Orb, and Nine-Fingered Keen might be able to improve this deck. Nine-Fingered Keen is just massive card draw in a gates deck.
seth i think the gatekeep ram is a sideboard thing. because most deck will bring creature removals to them. and if your oppent realize you have no creature permant to kill game 2/3 they tried to side out their removal then bang! you hit them with the bigass ram. and just main deck more removal for even the aggro deck is nice.

I have run instant speed land destruction using liquimetal, there are a lot of instant speed artifact destruction spells that pair with liquimetal perfectly
i found the gruul battle to be exceptional in this deck

Your Gates list in Explorer is what for me into that format! I've since built up a collection of tiered decks, but I'll always have a soft spot for Gates.
For versatile removal, I had good success with Assassin's Trophy. The deck has a very strong late game, so giving opponent a land is often not so bad.
I was so sad at the missed win at 40:40. You had 8 gates in play, and Seeked out Circuitous Route to get gates 9 and 10 with enough to still activate Mazes End for the win. Due to the 3 floating blue mana still.
The only thing this deck is missing is Gond Gate, if that was in Historic it'd automatically be tier 1

LOVE THIS DECK! In defense of the Gatebreaker Rams, they also make for really good targets for all those targeted removal spells. I mean, they gotta DEAL with a ram.... I'd still keep 1-2 in the main deck. Also, it's so, so jarring to not hear the "Saffron Olive Intro."

Is Conduit of Worlds on arena? I use it in my paper magic deck. It's really good to get back gates that get destroyed
Always get Baldur's Gate and Maze end as soon as possible, had you have untapped with Baldur's Instead of the random gate you got, you would have been able to do gates ablaze and the prime titan.
Second, Ram is great because at minimum it's a 5/5 for 3 with vig and trample, so they have to waste cards on it or they lose out on being able to attack while you can pressure them and sneak out a gates win.

You missed the amulet of vigor on a gate for gates its uncommon and i think its called Gond Gate

There is a way to get land destruction at instant speed though janky. It requires triggering Arcane bombardment when it has exiled a land destruction spell allowing one to destroy a land every turn at instant speed. Janky but possible.
Am I wrong or is Gond gate available in this format? That seems like it’d solve the speed issue

I have a gates deck that is desperately in need of updating to include the shiny new gates. Is there a reason you don't have a Gond Gate in your deck? It makes all your gates, even ones you search for with Circuitous Route and Primeval Titan, enter untapped.

6:44 after Middle Earth brought The Black Gate there are enough Gates for any 3 color Commander to to get to 11 gates without taking a half-useless guildgate.

Lol Gruul player made guild summit (an enchantment) an artifact so they could Boseiju it but Boseiju takes care of enchantments just fine.

I play an izzet land destruction deck I brewed the other year and you running three basics definitely helps, I haven't lost to gates playing it so far and it's usually because the gates players I face only run one forest if they run any basic. Basic checks are surprisingly effective against a lot of the meta.
So could this be built in paper?
when Land is good it always busted. Lands are notoriously hard to interact with
