The game against "charbelcher" was probably running Bolas's Citadel / Weather the Storm - goal is to pop off and cast your entire deck in one turn. Since you have no lands Bolas's Citadel never whiffs.
I can't get enough of you playing control like this. You are so in your element and can really tell how much joy you have making the opposing players miserable 😂
I've been running Dimir Control with full sets of spell pierce, counterspell, archmage's charm and memory lapse, plus a full set of snapcaster. also gets 4 bowmasters and lurrus. its been so fun to be the evil mage
42:37 As CGB said, the opponent definitely deserved the beating after their double thought seize on the play, Channel, Ulamogged CGB down to 0 lands. 😂
I made a Sultai control pile and it works surprinsingly well. Hand hate from black to disassemble combos early, counter spells from blue, then Oko and Uro as cracked green cards. Throw in Calim, Djinn Emperor and, as a fun experiment, a couple of Horobi, Death's Wail to convert Calim and Oko's ability's into creature removal and the deck became *chef's kiss*. I feel like control is unexplored yet and many people just focus on the obvious combo decks instead of brewing actual interesting piles. I also want this format to never go away. It feels like it's the most interesting thing you can play.

absolutely loving this format, and im glad there are non-combo decks that survive. will we see a tainted pact / thassas oracle deck? its actually super interesting because it has to be singleton for it to work. i ran a dimir pile and managed to win several times in this crazy format. would love to see CGB make a far better deck than i did
@@brushwagg7735 i have been. I just dont think my control list would be as good as his would be. Kinda got to pick some weird cards when you can only have 1 copy of anything. Even lands
I've played a bit of pact. You can run 2 pacts, but I made my deck singleton so I can run Lutri as a companion for the memes. Pretty fun, and there's a good amount of discard and counter magic in the format that makes the deck work.
@@the_r4ts I've been playing the format quite a bit, so it's possible. I've been playing a bant Nexus deck for fun, modern-inspired boros burn, and azorious control (similar to this deck, but a bit different). I've found that the control deck and burn deck vastly outperform any other decks I've played, for what it's worth.
This event has been the most fun I've had on Arena in a long time. I definitely agree that it's more fun when people can craft any deck they want instead of worrying about daily wins or conserving wild cards for only staples I typically despise subscription models but honestly I'd pay $20/month for full access to all cards across all formats
Honestly, I know it's magic what we're talking about and physical cards are expensive as fuck. But if you see arena as a videogame, 20$ a month for a shitty card game client is fucking insane compared to what most games offer for that price. The worst part is that if WOTC wanted to charge you 20$/month for virtual cards that you won't even get to own, they would do it. But they don't have enough with charging for virtual cardboard, they need lootboxes, two in-game currencies, a season pass and fake time limits to get all the money as possible from you.
This is the only format I accept and even embrace the existence of control. No Wildcards have been spent, no rank is on the line, and some of the most degenerate cards in Magic's history are legal, so embrace the toxic play patterns most people hate. I'm having so much fun playing this format, I'm even playing outside my wheelhouse and playing a Bant control list, and I'm enjoying it! Yes, it's even fun maneuvering around the Channel decks. I've won plenty of games through resolved Channels: even in the face of Ulamog/Emrakul triggers.
I saw a Nexus of Fate deck for the first time yesterday. I was playing mill. I might have pulled it out but they got Timetwister from Oracle of the Alpha
Seeing this kind of nonsense always reminds me of the first time I got completely controlled by a Hero of Dominaria as wincon deck I played the game till I had no more cards, because I did not understand how Teferi itself was the wincon
Finally, the only acceptable deck in this format. I've been playing this and only this ever since it started. Thank you, CGB; I can't wait to modify mine to follow the true One in best-of-one.
"It almost makes me wonder if magic would be better if it were free." The worst part is it doesn't even have to be free, just stop rewarding wins and reward playtime instead. I've been saying for years that the current design makes the game actively worse because free players are forced to spend their precious wildcards on already optimized aggro decks just to make sure they can keep playing the game without spending money. Also, even the rewards that aren't for wins (like daily challenges) heavily reward playing decks that dump their hand as fast as possible and win or lose fast. No wonder all the meta is aggro, playing control is actively punished.
The best way to improve Magic is to make it daily games played, not daily wins. Theres a perverse incentive to only craft and play the most efficient winning decks because thats how you get more cards to craft fun decks. You literally avoid crafting the fun decks because it is unsustainable.
It's definitely something that could use fixing. But, if it was just games played, people could just queue up and auto concede. Even if there was a turn requirement, people would find ways to game the system and avoid actually playing Magic just to get rewards. It's a problem I really have no idea how to solve while still giving rewards for free-to-plays in a reasonable manner.
@@CanadianBaconPwnage i think giving more rewards with quest instead of daily win but i think wotc already did that. The daily win only give good reward up until the 4th win, 5 win and above is just icr and 50 gold

Ok, terrible idea, I know, sorry. I'll shut up now.
I wouldn't play a deck in Hero of Dominaria era without a reasonable chance to cast The Immortal Sun. I prefer midrange and I hate Teferis. I don't know why WotC decided we always have to have at least one, maybe three in any meta.
@@tristandenot9789 Yeah I missed the Hall of the Storm Giants. Though I believe kaheera alone probs wouldnt be enough, if kaheera gets removed and after that you teferi ult that wouldnt matter much because ulting teferi requires you to draw cards. But of course then the Hall will win.
