I've been lurking, watching your videos, Tomislav. I simply haven't had much to add to the conversation. Today, I do. I made the first of two similar boxes as yours, but from cherry. Like your timber, it had nice straight grain, even an inclusion, that aligned nicely even after one flange resizing. Even then, the fit could be tighter, though it does pop.
So, as I comment 7 watch, you discuss the scraper edge.... I just reduced mine on a similar square scraper. It reassuring when turners you respect do the same things as I do.

Very nice box Tomislav! That homemade beading tool does a great job. I use my thread chasing tools occasionally for that effect but it's never as elegant as your tool. Thank you for sharing!

I'm going to put my guess on African Mahogany. Someone else guessed Sapele, but I think the cathedrals are too mellow. I am used to Sapele having a stronger contrast between spring and fall growth rings. The quarter saw is iconic to the 'mahogany looking' woods. I think Iroko has more of a mustard coloring before finishing, where this has more of a caramel hue.

It looks like you have the sides of your diamond parting tool ground down. Good idea. Never would have thought of that!
Usually I would not do this but this is so cheaply made parting tool from the 70... If made properly,this kind of parting tool can be great..... I'll do a video on each tool specific....☺️

It looks like Mimosa. I just turned some and it sure looks the same as what you are turning. For some reason, it is considered an invasive species because it grows so fast and takes over. Beautiful flowery leaves. Thank you for all the great videos you have provided.

Looks like Meranti to me, of which there are many species,with all sorts of commercial names, several of which you might find in one bundle. If I’m buying it I always buy the heaviest pieces(of the same nominal size !)
Very nice work as always, and it's always useful to see how you deal with unexpected events. I'm sure you know, but it's a good idea to be cautious about breathing dust from unknown woods. Best not to breath dust from any wood, of course, but some more than others. I wonder if you'd consider making a texture tool. I use one sometimes to put a little extra interest on the bottoms of boxes and bowls. It only adds a minute or two to the work and I think it looks good if you don't overdo.

Nice piece. The wood looks like a bunch of different things that they call 'mahogany' but aren't..... I didn't like the snap type lids. People would pick them up and give a slight tug, and when the lid didn't come off, they would put it back on the table. I go for a 3 to 5 second lid. Pick it up by the lid and it takes 3 to 5 seconds for the base to fall off. Same process. I did see one guy, Eric Lofstrom, who turned boxes with 1 inch tenons. Lid would be spot on parallel to the lathe bed. He used a scraper that had the edge ground perfectly straight so you could eyeball the lathe bed as you made the plunge cut. The tenon, he would start with it spot on parallel, but then would crown it slightly so only the center was the exact diameter of the lid. The lids would gently slide off. One he wouldn't pass around because 'just the warmth of people's hands would make it swell up a bit and the lid wouldn't fall off. He did turn them down in stages, taking 6 or so months. This would make up for the wood adjusting to bulk being removed. Interesting process. I haven't tried it yet.... I did do a 3 foot long pasta rolling pin that way, and 2 years later, it is still spot on straight. I do prefer to rough turn my boxes first and let them sit before finish turning them.
That is accually what I usually do and my last box on 4ways after wood moves its 3-5second lid....
I do like that process and I wanna make soon a tall tea box with lid like on selphone cases where it just slowly goes down.... probably in new year I'll do that but need some interesting timber and I try when I can to rough out stuff ....

Looks like sapele. It has a slightly spicy smell, which is useful for identification.
Its little different then sapeli I've turn but there could be milions of sub species

Nice little box Tomislav. I did something like that but I used a 10 TPI thread chaser. I should make one like yours. I think beads that are a little larger are a bit better

Hard to know 100% without seeing it in person and touching it, but I’m quite sure it’s NOT sapele. Sapele is denser and darker than true mahogany and the grain looks like ribbons. This looks like Lauan. Sometimes called Philippine mahogany, it’s plentiful and inexpensive but the grain isn’t especially impressive and it’s soft. It has that mahogany-like color though.
Could be, that would explain why its used for pallets, although this one isnt that soft.... Thank you for comment
I have several pieces of that wood. No idea what kind of wood it is, but awfully dense. Pretty color but not much graining? Does not sand well. I also got mine from wood flooring company as what they consider scrap. Got some real dark dense wood and also some lighter color. Must be coming from Africa and used to support boxes of wood flooring?
This sounds excactly like yours apart density, this is not dense like more usuall african woods.... Well who knows as only mahagony has over 70 subspecies.
I have a question not related to this. I have a scraper that cuts on the right side. Do I have to put the lathe in reverse in order to use it?
hey tomek, I think its bubinga, often used to make large palettes.
Hey, its too soft for bubinga and my guess bubinga is too much precious to be used for pallets

We used to use the bowls and cups on Saturday morning while watching G.I. JOE and the rest of the culture that you may have missed from before the turn of the millennium.

Katalox is very dark. The sapwood is very white.

I use vicmark chucks, perticular vm100 , and they do Not fit on Record power....

What type of Beeswax is that? doesn't look like the bright yellow stuff I see for sale over here. Is it blend or something?
Its pure beeswax,but either from age or something else it did go darker....but still has same properties
