    The Non-Canon Expert explains Dooku's unique principles that he applied to lightsaber combat, looking at why Dooku didn't respect any lightsaber duelist, regardless of whether they were a Jedi or Sith, who relied on more than one lightsaber or a double-bladed lightsaber.
    This is a Legends story for Dooku and the lightsaber combat forms with information found within the Legends novels "Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil" and the Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith novelization, as well as "Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force" and The Jedi Path reference book. I hope that you enjoy it!

      @Andre Michael Pietroschek the rare and expensive materials used for Greivous' armor (and the magna guards), plus the fact that he is a cyborg and not merely a robot, means that he can't be mass produced. Plus, think about it. He has to watch out for himself. I'm sure he'd be afraid of an army of Greivouses turning on him and Sidious.

      @@lotharschmal7991 to me it was quite obvious that Yoda was having the upper hand at all times. Almost as if he was playing with him. Perhaps he wanted to stall so that clones can arrive and arrest Count Dooku?
      While Yoda's skills are hard to assess, since he was a CGI character of unusual height, he was also winning against Sidious in EPIII so it is probably logical to assume that his saber fighting skills were superior and both times he lost was because of dirty Sith tricks.
      Also in the novelisation of EPIII it is mentioned that actually Obi-Wan was probably the greatest swordsman (at least when it comes to raw technical skills) of all time, the only one capable of taking on Grievous - which both Yoda and Windu were deemed incapable of by the author.

    Dooku fully understood the Sith concept of "by any means necessary." A true Sith would not hesitate to use another lightsaber if it meant achieving your goal.....Darth Sidious despised lightsabers, yet he was a master in all forms of lightsaber combat and possessed two of them.
    What Dooku did not like, was someone using a second blade in place of perfect lightsaber form. He would rather see someone master the art of using one blade, rather than using two or more blades to cover for their weaknesses.

      Literally nothing suggets Momin even stands a chance. Momin got curbed by a pre-prime, massively weakened and exhausted Vader who couldn't even stand properly. @@shogunofsorrow5520 to be fair, we barely have any stories on Momin, but there is decades of Canon on Dooku. Nevertheless, the potential exists for a great duel.
      You misunderstand Darth Vader's connection with the Force. Vader is its Chosen One. The fight between Vader and Momin occured at a powerful Dark Side verge which was thoroughly activated by Momin's construct. The Dark Side literally decided the outcome. It chose Vader

    • @shogunofsorrow5520
      @shogunofsorrow5520 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why would further stories even be needed to assess the outcome? New stories won't change the fact is that a fully fresh Momin got crushed like a bug by a dying Vader. Whereas an exhausted Dooku held strong against Yoda, someone undoubtedly more powerful than Vader.
      Completely irrelevant. Chosen One or not, Momin himself admits that Vader is significantly more powerful than he is, which is why he waited until Vader was exhausted before deciding to attack.

    I can understand his concept of the art of combat, though my preference is more centered around building one's self to be as useful as their saber and building one's saber to be useful in any situation. Therefore, one should never stop building one's self as they never stop building their saber. For example, I agree with his concept of one needing only a single blade to best an adversary, and I would entertain his personal code for a duel so as not to disrespect a worthy opponent, but I differ because though I would start out with a single blade saber, it's capabilities would not limit itself to only a single blade. The hilt itself would be capable of extending up to 6 feet in length, but also emitting an additional blade at the end. The blade length is also a variable I can see becoming an excellent source of usefulness via extending and retracting the blade length. I would do what I can to build the majority of the hilt out of various lightsaber resistant materials and even add a bayonet roughly 9 inches long with the bottom half being serrated and a golden ribbon tied around the hilt for both a more comfortable grip and to make for a distraction as it's excess drapes off moves with each strike. The ribbon is also a good symbol of hope, valor and light (Odd for a Sith, but I'm a bit more open minded than most) The saber itself would have a total of 4 crystals, 2 real kyber crystals and 2 manufactured ones to give it a much more powerful boost to it's capabilities. Theoretically speaking, with this extra boost it should allow the saber to cut with ease materials that normal sabers struggle with. Additionally, it should also allow a similar effect as a magnet to other sabers, forcing them to kick back and retract upon a clash. This would mean in order to beat me you could not strike my saber or you would have to reignite it every time we clash.
    Personally, I too would wear what's left of the hilts of the sabers I have claimed from Jedi I have bested to honor them as true warriors. The greatest of them or those who blessed me with a great challenge would have parts of their lightsaber forged into my own or my armor as a show of my respect for them as a warrior.

    Form 2 is my favorite as well, I can respect the idea of elegance through simplicity, and the emphasis on wasting as little energy as possible reminds me of when I used to take fencing lessons in real life. Actual fencing is NOT about being all fancy like sword fights in movies, it's about straightforward strikes to at least try to ensure a direct hit on your opponent. Of course there's parrying and disengaging maneuvers and the like, but even they are about small adjustments and movements that conserve as much energy as possible and focus on only what's necessary.

    • @OleandyrTheGreatDragonGod
      @OleandyrTheGreatDragonGod 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Aaron New Well, I USED to do fencing when I was in high school, perhaps I didn't make that part clear. I wish I could go back though, but I don't know of any fencing schools near me nor do I believe I would have the time management skills.
      As for what type, it was epee fencing with the white protective uniforms and the big round cage masks and wires that went through your jacket and one end connected to an outlet under the bell-guard of one's blade and the other end was hooked up to an electronic score keeper. Those days were a lot of fun, and I sometimes miss the muscle definition I used to have from doing that. I had calve muscles that looked like they were stuck in a permanent "charlie horse". LOL
      I still have all my old equipment too in case I ever do go back, and also for the sake of nostalgia. And I keep a trophy of the first blade I ever accidentally snapped as well. Haha.

      @Nobody Jones I did say "part"
      Dooku, even out of character and playing safe and smart, doesn't know Anakin's true skill, his style is at a disadvantage against perfected Djem So, and his body is severely weaker and lower in stamina, meaning a victory would still be hard won and unlikely.
      Dooku has marginally superior skill and obviously a lot more experience, as well as more diverse applications of the force, had he not been arrogant he would be nearly an equal to Anakin and assuming he's able to keep up at full pace and be able to fully utilize his varied skills, he would be able to pull out a win a few times out of ten against Anakin, unfortunately though, Anakin was practically born to counter Dooku.
      In the end, I'd say Anakin takes it 8/10 times if he isn't arrogant, but Dooku has a slight chance because of the things I listed. If he's arrogant Anakin wins pretty much every single time no matter what.
      with Dooku's severe arrogance, I think even Darth Maul could pull out a surprise win just because Dooku wouldn't take him seriously and it's possible that Maul could slip in a Taräs Käsi strike and that would probably be it for Dooku (though, Maul beating Dooku is like a 1/10 chance at best, but if you underestimate someone, that's always possible. The way I see it playing out, Dooku duels Maul, mocks him for his brutish weapon choice and style, quite easily disarms Maul either by cutting off a hand, a scathing prod, or by destroying the saberstaff, he'd then scoff at Maul's weakness and use lightning to torture Maul, Maul would then use his insane durability and grit to charge through the lightning and catch Dooku off guard and deliver a melee strike, Dooku's body being so frail and Maul being even stronger than Plagueis with Taräs Käsi would probably crumple or kill him with one lucky blow, an unlikely outcome, but still possible all because the way Dooku's character is, he plays around a little bit too much for the sake of entertainment)

In the novel Labyrinth of Evil, after explaining how he didn't appreciate Grievous's use of multiple lightsabers due to the lack of elegance and gallantry, he had to accept that "elegance, gallantry, and enchantment were gone from the galaxy" either way. Also, Dooku gave Grievous the benefit of the doubt with the multiple blades given the advantages he had in speed and strength due to his cybernetics. In that way, he thought it was better not to intervene or change too much when it came to Grievous's technique. But overall, he still held to what his preferred type of dueling was. • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr. FinesseR No, Maul specialized in Niman and Juyo. He wasn't a master of all seven forms at all. Further Plageuis never said Maul was unparalleled. The word he used was formidable. He also considered Maul to be overly arrogant, impatient and nothing more than a skilled assassin. You should read Darth Plageuis again and it's abundantly clear in that book that Maul is by and large a clueless tool. He has no outside connection, no power base or understanding of how the Grand Plan is to be implemented. There's an entire internal monologue Maul has where he himself thinks about how unprepared he would be if anything happened to Sidious. Compared to Tyranus, Maul isn't as skilled in lightsaber combat, Force techniques and he's hopelessly clueless on matters on the galactic stage like political intrigue, military buildup, logistical and economic pressures in the galaxy. Maul is also unable to blend in or have a dual identity like Palpatine and Dooku were, which further limits him.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr. FinesseR sigh, no he did not. He instructed him in the forms, which is nothing special as everyone received instruction on all the forms, save in the Jedi where Vaapad and Juyo were restricted due to their aggression focus. Maul was never stated in any source to be a Master of all seven forms, so that's a completely baseless claim on your side. Further, much if Maul's combat training came from a Falleen and studies of Iridonian fighting staffs. Maul's stated forms are Juyo and Niman. He has the same basic understanding of the other forms as anyone trained in lightsaber combat does, how to recognize them and a degree of how to respond.
      Similarly, Dooku fully specialized and perfected Makassi, but was versed and could perform or counter to varying degrees the other forms.
      Maul isn't a Master of all seven forms. It's exceedingly rare for anyone to be a Master of all forms because that inevitably spreads the skill set too thin to the detriment of any one form. True Masters pick a primary form that plays to their strengths and a supplemental form to help balance the main form's weaknesses. Then they study the other forms to recognize and counter them with their own. Exceptions to the rule like Kyle Katarn did master all seven forms and even invented new takes on them, but that came at the cost of other areas of specialization in Force powers and skills.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr. FinesseR actually no, Niman is the "Diplomat's Form" because it takes elements of all seven forms but does not excel in any of them. It and form three Soresu were the most common among the Jedi Order specifically because they were easier forms and more practical in an era of blaster bolt deflection over lightsaber duels. Niman doesn't point to mastery of all seven forms, but rather the exact opposite as it's meant to be a broad strokes compensation form. It's literally jack of all trades, master of none. My sources for this are the Bane trilogy, Darth Plageuis, RotS novelization, Darth Maul shadow hunter, the Book of Sith, the Jedi Code, Maul comics, including Son of Dathomir, and the CW.
      Further, I can use real world examples as a former soldier, military historian and someone who learned both fencing and kendo. The more broadly you stretch your skills, yes the more versatility you gain, but you lose expertise in each field as a result. It's why you don't have a pilot who's also a nuclear reactor specialist at the same time doing both jobs.
      Maul is proficient in Teras Kasi because he was trained in it by the Falleen in his origin comic. He's not a master of jar'kai either, though he can use two sabers to a degree, as can Dooku, as can Kenobi as can Anakin, but they are not masters of Jar'Kai or specialists in it. That's evident from Anakin being disarmed by Dooku, Dooku abandoning two sabers for one, Kenobi leaving himself open to a Force push and Maul discarding one half of his sabers on Naboo to use a single blade and again in his being summarily defeated effortlessly and disarmed by Sidious. Each of these again easily found in sources of Ep I, II, TCW. Further Juyo is incredibly taxing and leaves the user open as it's a primarily offensive form which Sidious can use effectively because of his sheer level of power and speed through the Force to negate. Maul can't rely on that same level of power because he's far weaker than Sidious. He's weaker than Mace, Dooku, and Anakin. He's also less skilled as a duelist than Kenobi as in each duel Maul brought support and increasingly failed to kill Kenobi even with help. Their final duel on even ground saw Kenobi summarily defeat Maul with ease. Then we have Maul's loss to Ashoka on Mandalore to consider. Conversely Dooku routinely defeated Kenobi and Skywalker throughout the Clone Wars until their final encounter, while following orders NOT to kill Anakin, meaning he was actively holding back in those duels.
      There's quite literally a plethora of sources, evidence and media that support what I've educated you on here.
      Your favoritism towards Maul is blinding you to the fact that at the end of the day, he's actually the weakest and least skilled of Sidious three apprentices. I know that's a bitter pill to swallow, but it's fact,not opinion and can be backed up by sources in the films, Legends and Canon. I know none of this will matter to you as I've had to explain this many times before to Maul fans and it's like arguing with a religious person each time, you can prove scientifically they are wrong, bring a wealth of sources, evidence and footage, but they'll still maintain faith in some invisible man in the sky anyway being the best.
      If you like Maul, that's all well and good, but it's important to recognize when your bias towards a character clouds your perception of their ability and relevance.
