    I never understood why they don't use a blade like in fallen order... Two lightsaber who can join together forming a double bladed saber... You can use one alone and then surprise the enemy with the second one or use them as a dual blade saberstaff then divide them for a surprise attack... You have so much more variety

    • @NoobNoobNews
      @NoobNoobNews 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      complexity. Why we choose to drive cars with 4 wheels instead of having the vehicles convert to 2 wheel use on the highway for better fuel efficency and have deployable wing sections for lift or downforce in sharp turning.. A simple saber is ultimately the more economical choice with fewest things that could go wrong. A spoon that is good at being a spoon instead of a spork, etc.

    • @MartinGasparini86
      @MartinGasparini86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@NoobNoobNews well I don't see much the complexity of two saber joint together at the bottom. We see that lightsaber already had something at the end to attack them on the belt... Someone have a ring other have more complex system like magnets instead of that add a joining mechanism and is done... The only problem I could see is the crystal not always you get 2 crystals... Usually you get one... In fallen order cal already have a double bladed lightsaber but one emitter is broken... Then he get one crystal that broke in two so is like the perfect match... But I don't think get a second crystal was so hard before the empire... Jedi control illum so I guess you can go there and get a new one...

    • @Nezxmi
      @Nezxmi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      First off, it's not very ideal to be a jack of all trades when it comes to fighting. Simplicity and efficiency are often more than enough, like Dooku. Secondly, the problem with double bladed sabers is that you gain an extra blade but not an extra weapon. You get an unwieldly staff that you now have to avoid as well and you can still only employ one blade at a time. The enemy also only has to keep track of one side, because the other side can only mirror it. You might catch an opponent off guard by dividing them, but that's a one time trick and if you don't end it there you've no longer got an advantage. It's just better to have a plan that could work even if the enemy knows about it than to try for a surprise.

    • @MartinGasparini86
      @MartinGasparini86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Nezxmi I don't think so... Think about maul he use a saberstaff but was defeated because obi cut the staff in half same with some of the inquisitors asoha hit the spinning disk and broke it... So if in that instance you could detach one of the blade without losing your weapon I think is a good deal... You can discard one blade and go for only one.. True maybe can be considered one time trick if the enemy know your fighting style... But I think combined with different forms of combat could become more complex... A lot of jedi later on don't study all the forms but usually create an amalgamation from them... Because don't have the time and the jedi order backing them up.... That's why unusual kind of lightsaber become more common... Like the saber blaster made by erzra.
      I think you could use more than one time as a trick... You could start with one blade with the second hidden.... Then put out the second and go dual welding and then go saberstaff... Or made all believe you are a saberstaff user they try to cut your staff in half an you devide them and strike...

    I remember reading several articles from swordsman and historians doing tactical analysis of Lightsabers, and they stated Lightsaber combat irl would look more like Fencing as opposed to the flashy swordplay seen in Star Wars. This is because the entire blade is lethal. Just a single poke or puncture can result in lethal damage.

    • @khadenallast4495
      @khadenallast4495 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would probably be some kind of cross between rapier and military saber, rather than Olympic fencing which is structured around a rather strict set of rules. However it would be modified to account for the extreme lack of weight in the blade, which makes "power strikes" rather pointless since momentum requires mass.

    The reason Ahsoka has a shoto is because she was using a reverse grip on her saber. Reverse grip isn't very good at rapidly blocking blaster fire at short range. Just look at the fight on alderaan between Ahsoka and the bounty Hunter. Anikan encouraged her to start dual wielding.

    Dual wielding is fun, but also more confusing and limiting than you'd expect until you try, it really does take a lot of practice to get good at it. For a greater immiate advantage with less longer term training go for the curved hilt. When I saw Attack of the Clones for the first time my inclination was to think that the curved hilt was a silly gimmick that wouldn't actually make a helpful difference in combat. Then I built one on a whim, gave to to my brother, and dueled him with my normal straight hilt: normally he was a near match for for me, I being able to almost always beat him after a few minutes of wearing him out and then using a feint, dodge, or grappling to get him, but this time he and I were both surprised and thrown off our rhythm. He nearly eating my saber twice in the first couple blows because of how much the curved hilt changed the angle of his blocks, and me then getting smacked upside the head because the subtle change in the angle of his attacks caused me to misjudged a parry.

    The reason that people in real life by and large don't wield is because it is usually better to use your second hand with a shield, or a two handed weapon. And a lot of people in certain places and times did dual wield. While it is hard, almost no one walks into battle armed with only one single handed weapon. It's always better to have anything in your off hand, even including a coat.

    After spending some time in the Lightsaber Dojo on my Oculus Quest 2, I can confirm that although dual wielding lightsabers looks cool and is fun, it's compromised. You don't have any free hands to force choke, push or grab opponents - so you are purely reliant on the sabers, which are actually quite difficult to coordinate effectively. I played around with dual wielding for a while and then went back to a single saber with a free hand for force powers - and was far more effective.

    Historically, dual wielding was not only well developed in some places, but a signature of certain schools of duelling.
    Used almost exclusively after the age of the firearm had begun, when armour and shields were less useful, it provided an extra block or attack in fencing. Often the second blade had extra features, for trapping an opponent’s blade, even if for only a moment, even breaking them.

    catching and deflecting incoming attacks and counter slashing, where as a forward grip is used for attacking and flipping between these grips would change the attack patterns. Also in fighting multiple opponents having both blades in a reverse grip would be a mainly defensive battle focusing on counter attacking while deflecting multiple incoming blows.

    Allen, love what you're doing here. Big fan! Wanted to comment and ask a question. As a life long practitioner of martial arts, I think your assessment of dual-wielding lightsabers is pretty believable due to force users being pre-cognitive and the light-weight of lightsabers. On Earth there is close to no historical record of dual-wielding actually being a thing, outside of Filipino Eskrima and Miyamoto Musashi's own home-brew style. Mainly for reasons you cited around lack of coordination and using the off-hand to hold a shield, which was common since armor was not developed to the point of full plate for lack of technology to create large enough plates for it! However, once full plate was all the rage, weapons had to be developed to open those cans up. Enter the two-handed swords, poleaxes, etc. My question is around the reverse grip. If there's little historical precedence for dual-wielding, there is even less so around reverse grip. At least for swords. The whole idea around the sword was distance advantage. It's very natural for a mammal to raise their arm and bring it down holding a hafted weapon like an axe, or even a rock. We see monkeys do this, too (with rocks!) What is not natural is to stand in front of danger with a pointy object. That takes significant training to override the instinct to use a sword as a metal club (or how we see Rey fight with a lightsaber, which she swings like a baseball bat). The only reverse grip sword techniques I'm aware of can be seen in European treaties is a murder stroke. Either on horseback to take down those annoying foot soldiers grabbing at you, or to direct your blade in-between those pesky impenetrable plates. Otherwise, a reverse grip completely negates all the range advantage and cutting leverage of a sword. Even defensively this does not make sense because you don't want to receive a blow with a sword directly and risk snapping your blade. Best practice is to redirect a blow or receive the blow closer to the hilt where more of the force can be absorbed into your hands/body. But generally that's if you're unarmored. In full plate you'd be like a tank, just taking hits while mowing down anyone in your way with your two-handed death instrument. Also, unless we're looking at legends there seems very little, if any, precedence for reverse grip in canon. It feels like Ahsoka was provided this style to make her character pop, which I consider lazy writing. It's like in The Last Kingdom where Uhtred it the only character who carries his sword on his back. No one in all of history did this! Mainly because it is much slower to draw from your back than your hip, and it's physically impossible to draw a blade from behind you when the blade is longer than your arm! Back scabbards and reverse grip are the fallacies of ninja comics and Hollywood. And for that matter, where did Ahsoka learn this technique from anyway?! Aniken certainly didn't teach it to her or we would have seen him use reverse grip. OK, rant over. Sorry, I get worked up. I'm interested in your response to this given you put a lot of Star Wars into believable and understandable context.

    Energy sheild have the ability to be fluid or stiff. It sounds like the bending and warping spacetime combined with a superfluid that can disperse energy, perhaps quantum tunneling to redirect energy in multiple directions. Occilating magnetic feild can disrupt spacetime and have the ability to polarize to push or pull. Extending a magnetic feilds width in one direction without losing strength could also contain plasma.
    Also would allow you shape it to be flexible like a whip.

    Very good points. It does, however, get a bit silly in more recent Star Wars material how frequently important characters end up dual-wielding for pure "rule of cool", like Obi-Wan, Anakin, Barriss Offee and fricking Palpatine (who I know is supposed to be a master of basically everything, but should not even require a saber at his power level).
    Another important point is that two LONG blades are far more likely to get in each other's way, which is why in real life we see either a long blade paired with a shorter one, or two short blades together so you can maneuver both more freely. Given that we've seen a few times that saber length is adjustable in the hilt, it would be interesting to see a Force-using dual wielder who constantly switches which blade is the longer one, to catch the opponent off-guard. Bit of an "I am not lef-handed" situation.

    Niten Ichiryu is what the Jarkai style is based on, and the answer for why it works is that one weapon is meant to defend and deflect, the other blade is an instant riposte. It is extremely difficult to defeat with one sword and no shield of any kind.
    Also, "Shoto" just means "Short blade." It doesn't have any requirement to fit between a wakizashi and tanto. You could have a samurai with a nodachi for their "Daito" or long sword, and a katana for their shoto. Humans also _absolutely can_ use multiple weapons, or sai, and kama, and parrying knives and so forth wouldn't exist as a paired weapons. Butterfly swords, tekko, tonfa, kama-kusari, all come paired. All it takes is a good deal of practice to build up the mechanical skill to do complex actions with them.

    After you practice, it just becomes second nature and you don't even realize half the time what your limbs are doing, because you don't need to focus on them. They just do..
    The same could easily be said for a Jedi using two blades. Not only would this very much be possible for someone who puts the time and effort into training, but the Jedi literally have cognitive abilities that would allow for better use of multiple limb fighting.

    I just want to note that there are a number of practical reasons why dual wielding guns aren't a viable option.
    Firstly there's reloading, where you need to somehow store the empty magazine and load in a new one in a timely manner.
    Second, there's aiming. It takes a ridiculous amount of effort to track one target, let alone multiple. Add on keeping your weapon steady and actually pointing at what you want to shoot and it's likely that you'll miss more often than not.
    And finally, there's the simple fact that one gun is usually enough. It's very rare to wind up in a situation where being able to shoot twice as much is actually useful.
