    The other benefit a lightsaber has over a normal sword is you don’t need to worry at all about edge alignment, making spinning even that much more effective. The downside is you need to control the blades much more to keep them away from your torso, so give and take. When you factor all that in I think how maul uses his double bladed lightsaber makes a lot of sense. Good video, the double bladed lightsaber has always been my favorite science fiction weapon!

      True but also somewhat not. I've also done a bit of dueling with a double-bladed saber, and while the larger hilt is an opening it's only really exploitable if you're not spacing yourself properly. A double-bladed saber or for that matter any exotic saber type with a longer hilt needs different spacing from a conventional saber. My particular double-bladed saber benefits from a good half a meter of extra distance, and my pike benefits from the full meter.

      Problem is that a Bo staff doesn't directly translate to a double-ended weapon with only a small grip area. With a Bo you have a full range of motion with your hand placement along the entire length of the staff. Quite a bit still does carry over, though, it's just not a direct one-to-one.

    If I were to make a Twinblade based on using Shad's double-longsword prop as a point of reference:
    - Lengthen the handle grip by two hand lengths, and shorten the blades by an equal amount. (Same total length.)
    - Using custom made pommels that latch to each other, and can be held together with a double-pronged metal pin for stability.
    This way, you have two separate long-grip arming swords that can be sheathed on your waist belt for ease of transport. In a sudden attack, you can draw one of the blades to use immediately, or if you have time you can connect the two blades to make the twinblade.

    You should read Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. There's a section in the book that dives a little bit into lightsaber combat, & explains a little bit about why some of the sith used the double bladed lightsaber.
    This is a rough explanation since I haven't read the book in a while, but it basically says that fighting with a double bladed lightsaber is both harder to learn & far deadlier to an inexperienced individual than the normal single bladed lightsaber. However, because of how few people use it & understand how to counter its fighting style with unique attacks & blocks, when used by a very experienced individual it actually ends up being far deadlier & far more unpredictable to opponents than the very common single bladed fighting styles

      MrSlipperHat Yeah, lightsaber blades being essentially weightless is quite a big advantage. And there’s no need for edge alignment, considering all lightsabers are just very very hot sticks (except the black lightsaber, which actually has an edge).
      But while they share different physics, they do share similar combat potential. The Darth Maul grip will still be less effective because of the different options it brings. I think it's only barely a polearm on the condition that it is just two swords screwed together. If both blades share the same longsword/hand-and-a-half handle, rather than two full-length longsword handles, the user cannot really adjust their grip to meaningfully extend the reach. An example of this would be the double-bladed sword (based on a spear from Japanese mythology) of Izanagi-no-Okami from the Persona series. In that weapon, the handle only has enough space for a typical longsword grip (from the user in question, at least). There simply isn't enough "pole" to give it the advantages of a polearm.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's why you specifically design the weapon with a longer hilt. If you're just sticking an extra blade on the end of a standard-length longsword hilt, you're making a pretty big mistake.

    One thing to note, is that Ray Park treated the double bladed lightsaber more closely to a bowstaff and not a sword. Also, the blades he utilized on the lightsaber were closer to a 28 inch blade vs the standard 36 inch of a single blade saber. Also, he had no cross guards due to it being more of a bowstaff type weapon

    Darth Maul's sword would be INCREDIBLY useful and deadly, but only if he used it right (which he didn't).
    The enormous tactical advantage of his blades are that he can turn either of them on and off at will. He could fight in a standard sword vs sword duel and while parrying his opponent's strike, activate the other end of his blade and slice through his opponent who didn't realize that blade was ever there in the first place. Or while making a swing in one direction, deactivate that blade an activate the blade from the opposite end.
    There are so many opportunities to strike an enemy with what would be a damn near impossible to parry strike.
    All the advantages of single and double weapons with no drawbacks at all.

      Tràkata's [the combat technique that involves deactivating your saber during combat] reliance on deception has sparked debate among the Jedi and Sith, with some viewing it as a dishonorable or unsportsmanlike approach to combat. The Sith may criticize it for showing weakness, preferring direct displays of power. Meanwhile, some Jedi argue it strays from the path of honor and openness they strive to uphold. Despite this, Tràkata remains a testament to the diversity of thought and strategy that exists within the Star Wars universe's martial traditions.

    I actually went to a "lightsaber school" for a few years. Basically we fought with long plastic sticks, and the guys who founded the school used kendo, fencing and the 7 styles of combat that are used in star wars as inspiration to create this martial art.
    We did have double lightsabers, one guy even made it his main training weapon. I have tried it a few times, and honestly with a bit of practice it is a great weapon. If that was a true metal sword, the weight would probably be very unpractical, but when fighting someone who has a simple lightsaber, you just have so much more speed and options, so it is actually really good. It is also especially good when fighting two or more opponents at once, because you can attack on multiple sides without having to swing your sword the whole way.
    I'm also pretty sure it would be useless against a shield + sword user, so that's probably another reason why theses weapons never really existed.
    So I think your analysis is on point here ! I think it is a great dueling weapon, or when fighting without shields !

Potentially your own brothers in arms could become at risk from strikes if they are behind or beside you... You would be having to gauge that to a greater degree which would be a distraction from what was happening in front of you, your main assailant. With a single blade you have 1 pointy end , much easier to control in terms of close quarters where every one is bundled together in a mass of combat. I may be wrong, but just a thought. LittleRedRhuari RRR jedi and sith have, to a varying degree, the ability to sense the future. Because if this, they would likely be masters of bluffing - exposing themselves deliberately with the intention of countering the strike to the exposed area. When you take into account the years of combat training, fast reflexes and the ability to sense the future, it would be an act of suicide to strike at an already exposed area of the opponent. Instead, it would make more sense to strike at the opponents blade with the intention of creating an opening yourself, as your opponent would not anticipate this and would be much less likely to counter the strike. To emphasise the importance of anticipation and surprise in a lightsaber duel, you only have to look at how Darth Maul died. He attempted to strike obi wan with the same pummel strike he used to kill Qui-Gon, and because this strike was so predictable, obi was was able to perfectly counter his strike and killed Darth maul.

    One thing I didn't hear you mention was the weapon's balance. As someone who dabbles in contact staff, I know how crucial it would be to have both swords equally balanced so that not too much weight is in the blades vs the handle, and the place where both swords meet is the exact center of balance in the weapon. Even a little extra weight on one side could make the entire weapon unbalanced and useless.

They didn't have to do all they did but they did so we got what we got. All Disney did was the sensible logical move because no offense the canon was a train wreck and put Lucasfilms into a corner they really couldn't get out without a purge of something. Now in what you're talking about Darrel mentions what is kept and both Clone Wars show and Rebels are canon there for Maul lived and his brother is canon.

    Given all the advantages stated here, it would seem the double bladed lightsaber would be much more practical than a double bladed sword!
    The sword’s only downsides seemed to be practicality. Lightsaber blades are weightless, and obviously they retract to make it more portable. Basically, having a double bladed sword doesn’t make sense, but if we ever invent some kinda laser sword…. I think we got something!

    I kinda think that this weapon fulfills the niche of a bodyguard's weapon, kinda like the greatsword and great-axe. Impractical for the individual to carry, not overall useful in a battlefield scenario, but capable of holding off multiple attackers in such a manner that a single person can hold a choke point[s] long enough for the important party to retreat/reform ranks. Kind of like how the huskarl held off an entire army at the battle of Stanford Bridge with a great-axe.

I think the double blades never catch up because the portability of normal sidearm trumped it, and if you want to use a polearm, just get a real polearm with greater reach. For a personal combat melee weapon, this thing will be hard to carry and cumbersome to draw. There is a reason why Katana is popular alternative choice to long sword type of side arm despite the fact that it has less reach, the quick draw. This thing just fly against everything a small scale personal combat side arm needs to function in that setting and outclassed in battlefields by normal polearms

But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. Because the weapon is difficult to master, however, few among the Jedi - or even the Sith - understand it. They don't know how to attack or defend effectively against it. That gives those of us who use it an advantage over most of our opponents."
    ―Blademaster Kas'im

      The blades also have no weight whatsoever. Its just burning plasma. So, there isn't any weight to put behind it, making a different style of fighting entirely.

    • @jordanreed7570
      @jordanreed7570 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      SWVWC that’s not necessarily true the blade’s weight comes from the magnetic field that maintains the super heated plasma blade in it’s shape I’m not fully versed on how it works but I do know that the stronger the magnetic field the more force you have to put in to your swings

    • @swvwc8393
      @swvwc8393 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jordanreed7570 Depending on you see the blade. If you think its a simple Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (or a laser), it would have no weight as it is just light (which begs the question, how it simply stops after 4 or so feet). But as a plasma, it is simply superheated (or super-cooled) gases. The weight also depends on the gas, but generally, it seems to be without weight just looking at it. I mean, if it can be deflected behind your back, it MUST not have that much weight.

    Watching you play with this makes me curious how it would fair sparing against a Klingon batlith. I could see the batlith hooks, if timed properly grabbing both blades kind of like a Sai might, but with the sturdiness to counteract the momentum of the swing. Just a fun thought to test. I can't say this would work, but definitely a fun experiment. Loving your video
