  • Introducing the much-awaited 2023 Maruti Jimny! In this first drive review, Vikrant takes a closer look at this 4x4 SUV's design, features, driving experience, comfort, and overall value. We'll also explore whether it can truly compete with popular compact SUVs like the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, and Maruti's own Brezza.
    Starting from Gypsy and now standing heads on with the Mahindra Thar, we explore how it performs in the wild and on the tarmac. Maruti Suzuki offers this popular off-roader with only a petrol engine option even though most of us would have loved a diesel Jimny. From its light ladder-frame off-road SUV design to its impressive safety features, we cover everything you need to know about the Maruti Jimny. Stick around for our verdict on its road presence, cabin experience, powertrain details, off-road capabilities, and on-road manners. Discover if the Jimny lives up to the hype and if it can serve as a practical family-oriented alternative

      Not the only car in the garage, but surely the only petrol car in my garage. Diesel ones are for long distance journey. Jimny is very capable on all terrains, and has smooth suspensions giving it an excellent ride quality. Thumbs up to Jimny👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    Vikrant Sir had done the Thar review when it was launched and it is great that Carwale chose him to do the review for Jimny. That way he will exactly put forth his thoughts by comparing apples with apples.

      The Thar is my opinion is the more sophisticated product. And it is the better of the two on the road. So, if Jimny wants to make any inroads at all, it will need to seduce buyers with a mouthwatering price tag.

  • @suvolens

    YT is inundated with Jimny reviews since yesterday, and I’ve got to say - this is the most objective of them all, even the larger brands of review shops which felt either overexcited, brand-coerced or plain hogwash.
    Personally, I’m among the 30,000 pre-bookers Maruti claims to have on the Jimny, and this is going to be the second car in my garage, more as a city runabout and biannual hill jaunts. Therefore, it’s visible flaws and shortcomings, I’m prepared to live with. But you’re spot on the price. That’s exactly what I expect to pay for the MT version I’ve booked, Zeta or Alpha. Through the months of waiting, I can sense Marutis’ intense conundrum in trying to fix a price label on the Jimny. Suzuki gets away with a much higher than deserved price for the 3 door abroad, given how taken those customers are with the cute appeal of the car. It’s cult and next to none. In India, the games are different. First, they had to tool on two extra doors to make it palatable for a larger audience. Clearly, Maruti is serious about gaining back a larger share of the SUV pie. But the Thar has it in a pincerhold with the RWD and the inbound 5 door. These are traditionally more appealing to the masses, more street-cred, more diesel and simply more ‘Jeep’. 75% of Thar owners recycle their Thars in 3 years or less. The Jimny I’m afraid, fits into a similar shelf-life for most. I’m not sure how Maruti plans to convince buyers to part with higher-than-Thar money by parroting ‘premium’ where no single feature betray that. I’d still take the Jimny over the over-testosteroned That anyway. It’s just more practical on Indian roads or non-roads. But I can’t buy Maruti’s BS if BS is what they offer on June 7th.
    Great review man 👍🏼👍🏼

    Bought the AT in 2018 when I saw your review is when I test rode the bike (I had booked another) and absolutely fell in love with it. I was looking for reviews on this car and I came across a familiar face and once again you have answered all the questions I had. I will test ride one soon and if history were to repeat itself then I guess I’ll have a Jimny soon enough.

    I wish Maruti launches 3 door variant & offers 2WD options too.
    After driving 3 door variant here in Dubai (on road) I too agree Jimny deserves a peppy engine, 6 speed AT & of course responsive steering wheel.
    Hope Maruti prices it right without being greedy.

      Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We did drive the auto variant, and the rvoew if that is live on the CarWale website. The auto felt better for offroad use, but on the road it was extremely tedious. As for the 2wd variant, I feel there will be one, but not soon. But a there-door version might never see showrooms in India.

    The oem factory stock gypsy is perfectly fine on road provided you use its original tyres nylon cross ply and the right recommended tyre pressure of 20 psi all around without load. Also you have to drive it the way it is to be driven. It is not a speed demon.
    The Jimny suspension is phenomenal and it is very comfortable both on road and off road. It’s a really advanced and modern version of the gypsy.

      The Jimny has the Bolero 4x4 beat in every which way. Apart from size and the emotional quotient. The Jimny is more modern so it is more comfortable. It has more up-to-date off-road hardware. And it is more practical inside. The Bolero of course is more spacious, it has a fantastic fuel economy, it is diesel, and you can get it fixed no matter which part of India you might be stuck in.

    In my opinion, Mr. Vikrant has missed the mark with this review
    The strength of the car is it's utilitarian approach, which was not highlighted adequately. Instead it was compared with the compact SUVs. This car is not a lifestyle product like the Thar, it is a serious off-road/overland vehicle with design choices on the hardware front far superior than done by Mahindra. Front solid axle, you only get that on the Jeep Rubicon after Jimny. Good clearance from the bumpers, Thar diesel has it's DPF box at the rear which hurts its departure angle, the radiator is mounted lower as well. None of that here sir
    Jimny also has a headlamp washer, the boot has accessory fitment provisions right from the factory anda 12v lighter socket as well, removable panel below A pillar for snorket fitment. You have to draw the intent of the product from these things. The kind of aftermarket products available internationally are astonishing. This car is not for everyone, and I would differ on the fact that it could become a part of single car garage, perhaps two

      You are right - if we were to look at it solely as an offroader, it ticks many boxes. And we have said that - off the road it is brilliant. But that’s not its sole purpose. A purpose that's defined by the equipment on board, the tyres it runs, the focus on fuel efficiency on part of the OEM. Plus, this is review is to give the public at large a perspective on what the Jimny is and how it can fit into their lives. We will of course have a dedicated offroad centric review when we get the car for a longer duration than just a day. And at that time we will touch upon our misses that you highlighted.

    • @NalinKhurb
      @NalinKhurb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vikrantsingh6916 Appreciate your response
      I agree that a review should target a wider audience and you did just that. I would say this car has an off road bias to a very large extent, the equipment you need for a comfortable experience on trails is all there. It doesn't even have a handrest for example! Wouldn't count much efforts for fuel efficiency also, since it does not have a mild hybrid system or the K15C engine
      As for the tyres, that's a gripe I have with the Japanese. Suzuki, Honda, Toyota could well do with wider tyres on many models. Honda City is especially under-tyred with those 185s. Although any 4x4 enthusiast would surely do some modifications to their ride, maybe that could have been the reason for these 'placeholder' Bridgestones

    I just don't understand the logic behind Jimny 5D. Every video that I see, every forum that I read, the comments are unanimously demanding the 3D variant. But as per Maruti's survey, people want the 5D version. Don't get me wrong, I think the 5D version looks promising, but there's no doubt that the smaller dimensions and weight of the 3D Jimny makes it much more sporty than the 5D Jimny.

      We think Maruti is not able to discard their mass-market mindset, even for a product which has a niche appeal. They burnt their fingers many times launching limited-appeal products like the Grand Vitara XL7, Kizashi etc and don't want to have a 'flop' on their hands. The 5-door version certainly expands the appeal of the Jimny to more people, in case the enthusiasts don't put the money where their mouths are

    Have had the pleasure to own 5 Gypsy's over the years. Waiting and Ageing till the Jimny was finally launched in India, then waited another six [6] months after booking, one of the 1st, we were anxiously waiting for the prices. The 7 June price revel left us in shock, to say the least. For a four [4] seat vehicle, but in reality fit for two ;), it is Highly Overpriced by about 2.5 to 3 Lacs, the prices were VERY DISAPPOINTING and Maruti will CRASH its booking numbers. Comparing the Jimny with the Thar is like Oranges to Apples, so we won't go there. Where Maruti had the opportunity to have a swarm of little Jimny's running around India, if the pricing was correct. Instead they chose to price it so high that the basic ON ROAD cost for the Zeta MT is going to be about 15.10 to 15.40 Lacs, with the Alpha AT at about 17.50 to 17.80 Lacs, this with an K15-B Engine, NOT the K15-C + many other shortcomings. Come on Maruti, How & Why the EXORBITANT PRICING? Still can't get over the SHOCK 🤔

      Any modifications made to a car are illegal under Indian law.
      Unless the roof carrier is offered as an official accessory by the company (not the dealer), it will be considered an illegal modification by law enforcement

    • @CarWale
      @CarWale  ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, those who are buying the Thar purely for its road presence will not even think about the Jimny
      Might offer more value than the petrol-powered Thar for those looking for an off-roader. Some may also be attracted to it thanks to the lower ownership timelines for diesel SUVs in some cities due to legislation
      But everything will depend on the price Maruti is willing to sell the Jimny at

      It really doesn't feel remotely related to the S-Presso in any way apart from some of the switchgear
      Rear seats are not the most comfortable, sure. But they are wide enough to accommodate two adults
      Maruti may tweak some elements before launch, but this is close to production

    The touchscreens that protrude above the dashboard look really bad, not to mention they block visibility. Unfortunately, most cars are following this design. Its just poor design honestly. The touchscreen should be in line with the dashboard; would be a much cleaner, lighter and airier aesthetic.

    • @CarWale
      @CarWale  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the case of the Jimny, the floating touchscreen does not block visibility because you are seated quite high.
      Design is a subjective matter, so can't comment on if this style of touchscreen integration is good/bad in terms of looks.

    Why is the turning radius of Jimmy so bad. It’s even worse than the Thar which is a bigger car.

    • @CarWale
      @CarWale  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ladder on frame SUVs in general have a bigger turning radius by design.
      The Thar has a shorter wheelbase than the Jimny, so it has a shorter turning radius
