  • The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is the successor to the Gypsy, one of India's earliest and most popular lifestyle vehicles. And as great as the Gypsy was off-road, that's the core competence of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as well. Of course, so far, we don't get a drop top, or the international 3-door version. Kartikeya returned from the first drive experience and on MotorInc First, he's answering all the questions about the Jimny.
    ~
This is a new format for us, and we not only encourage you to leave comments and questions about the Jimny, but we'd also love to hear what you thought of the format and how we could improve MotorInc First.

More people will buy the Thar now. :-)
Comparing the Thar and the Jimny doesn't make any sense unless you actually go off-road.
    - On-road - the Thar's presence and performance will be more obviously exciting. The Jimny will be okay enough for those who want to drive to where the off-road. Again two very different moods and needs. But, in this case, the Jimny can't replace the Thar.
    - If the Thar's off-road potential excited you, the Jimny will make you laugh with joy. They are too different moods - the Thar is more serious and forceful. The Jimny is more of a light-hearted and light-footed machine. It glides over stuff. The Thar ploughs through. I hope you find the mood and the opportunity to experience what the Jimny is really about.
    Jimny Updates!
    - An open top Jimmy could be prepped for the Indian Army as a special use case. But, not happening for you and me.
    - Don't wait for a cheaper rear-wheel drive or two-wheel drive not planned.
    So, now, Jimny or no?

Even though the Thar has the performance for an exciting drive, I think it’s bouncy suspension would limit its comfortable cruising speed. With the Jimny , the power is much lesser but if it’s on road suspension characteristics are better than the Thar, it might be more comfortable as far as cruising at 90-100 km/hr is concerned.

Once again a thought provoking video guys. I love the conversational style. Jimny will build its market over next couple of years as people realize how well put together the vehicle is and how sorted the ride is and people realize that there is much more to a vehicle than just its size.
Jimny is a much more polished product than a Thar ever was. The ownership experience is going to be much more soothing because remember it has been on the road for last 3 years globally and it has got rave reviews everywhere. For people like me who currently own a Gypsy (2016 Gypsy King), it will be a nice addition. Although I must add that my Gypsy is going nowhere. I live in Himachal (four weeks in a year) and I can't think of a better vehicle for hills. Its light, narrow, has adequate power and has all the gizmos that I would ever want and then some. I had high hopes from Thar but it is still a work in progress. As far as mileage is concerned, as long as it gives me 10kmpl, I'll be more than happy.

The Thar Vs Jimny Debate would never end.
I am happy that, we are seeing niche products like the Jimny in Indian Market.
People buy Thar for the Persona and Mahindra also has 4X2 Thar for the people who wants to show off. I have seen people putting a 4X4 Monogram on their 4X2 lol.
5 Years down the line, i might buy a second hand Jimny to use it to go off-road and This one being a Suzuki, it would be reliable and not to forget about the Maruti's Service Network.
As far as This podcast goes, I can endlessly watch you guys discussing automobiles.

It's always a delight to listen when Shumi & Kartikeya have a conversation. The first ride impressions as a discussion is excellent. I absolutely enjoyed the first ride discussion of the RE Super Meteor and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
    What's special about this video:
    1. It is no longer a part of ThisConnect podcasts and is a separate thread itself, that's best.
    2. The setup is super soothing, the huge mics with their stands gone, making it even more cleaner without compromising the audio quality.

I got my Jimny Zeta MT in December, 2023 n drive it 1500 km and it is my a primary vehicle, not on daily basis but mostly on weekends.
According to me, it's not the any regular maruti suzuki car. Maruti suzuki has done a great job to make this Vehicle 👏
its an extraordinary Car with very distinctive looks with iconic history, a very good refined engine and widely spreaded suzuki service networks.
    Reasons To like it:
    1.
It's my 1st 4*4 vehicle before that i never drive any 4*4 or RWD....its feels a lot better than any of FWD cars.
    2.
Really fortunate that I got it under 12 lakh, at this price range you can't find any car that has 4*4 with body on frame structure in india.
    3.
Till today we don't have any crash test rate but I'm pretty sure that the ladder frame won't be smash like most of monocoque chassis.
    4.
5 speed MT is more fuel ⛽️ efficient than 4 speed AT and you can rev it up to 5K rpm.
    5.
Jimny looks so charming 😍, cute and feels more mechanical than any other car present in Indian market.
    Reasons to Not like it:
    1.
You always have to push the Auto engine start/stop button before entering into bumper to bumper traffic...if not every time engine turned off as well as the AC.
    2.
The car should have seat load sensors otherwise it beaps every time.
    3.
If you are very Milage sensitive person than its not for you (both MT and AT)...it drinks juice a lot than other suzuki.
Other than this, i like ...no...no, i adore my jimny a lot 💛
    Verdicts:
Love it or hate it, but I'm sure you can't ignore it 😉

    People compare it with Thar..
Here’s my analogy from the world of motorcycles…
It’s like Himalayan (Thar) vs Xpulse (Jimny)
    Himalayan
    1. Heavy
    2. Torquey
    3. Feels substantial (big)
    4. More engine capacity and power and torque
    5. Good cruiser
    6. If it gets stuck in mud or slush, better have backup
    Xpulse
    1. Lighter
    2. Peppy enough to glide over stuff.
    3. Feels small
    4. Less power, smaller engine but peppy for off-road and city
    5. Bad cruiser
    6. If it gets stuck, you need few people to just push it out ;)

Comparing Jimny with the Thar 3 door is not really fair I think because if and when the 5 door Thar comes it will be much more expensive than the Jimny. (like Kartikeya said Mahindra played the right game with the RWD Thar). I would probably still choose Thar over this as a secondary car and that's why I wish they brought the 3 door version (4x4 cars don't make sense to me as a primary car if you are going off-roading once in a blue moon)
    Love the content.
Out of topic but ever plan on making a video comparing the numbers of how much bike manufacturers sell big bikes in other markets vs India, just curious because they sell these bikes probably only to enthusiasts there as well as here and I am lazy to do the research myself 😂

I had the 2021 3 door manual Jimny in Australia for an year and the car is little box of surprise. Its a proper 4x4 built for a purpose and it does surprisingly well when you offroad. It is small and easy thing to manoeuvre and easy to recover when you did get stuck while offroading, was a no fuss off roader even if it lacked power. The on-road performance takes a compromise and the lack of power shows up on highway over 100 as it is super slow but the in the city is it is fun and easy to drive. Also the build quality is solid although this was Made in Japan.
Coming from this experience, I was excited when the 5 door was launched in India and was eager to do a blind purchase. But I was very skeptical about the added weight with the 5 door to the engine which was already lacking in the 3 door. I took it for a test drive in India, I didn't find the Jimny to be lacking in power as you dont get to drive as fast but the 5 door was sufficient and perfect for city use and short long drives. Where it let me down was the initial pricing and the cabin space cause the 5 door variant felt cramped compared to the 3 door...I am 186cm and I felt comfortable in my 3 door Jimny. Also the lack of torque in the 5 door variant was noticeable due to the added weight which made it feel very sluggish at times and it only felt just sufficient enough on the 3 door variant which just weighs just over a ton. The ride quality was actually good, easy to handle the Indian roads better than the Thar which I ended up choosing over the Jimny. The Thar feels better put together than the Jimny with more sensible engine options.
Avoid the AT variant at all cost if you have a choice. The 4 speed gear box combined with a low power engine is just a big let down. One of the reason I chose the manual over the AT while I purchased the 3 door, and it is indifferent with the 5 for variant. Go for the manual and if practicality matters, the Jimny is a better for day to day use with the new pricing although the road presence of the Thar is just unbeatable.

Finally got a chance to take the Jimny AT for a spin here. And let me get the main USP out of the way, the ride is simply brilliant. Absolutely epic! I deliberately took it over some stones and potholes and the Jimny just glides over them. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of the ride in a Crysta. And I absolutely loved the compact footprint and the steering feels nice too. The turning radius is that of a boat and it was quite the circus when I took it into a small petrol station especially with that fuel lid on the driver's side. :)
Though, what I absolutely hated was the outdated 4 speed AT, the gears are all very tall to compensate for the lack of ratios and it feels really laborious and not pleasant at all if one wants to go a little fast. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to drive the Jimny at higher speeds, it feels good sitting at 80 kmph and that's fine by me, but the acceleration or rather the lack of it is dangerous in this day and age. It is a shame as I quite like the tough little car and I can live with that engine, but not the 4 speed automatic. Maruti should do something about it.

Great conversation guys. I think 1 things can be added to this is a comparison with Gurkha since it is also a more focused off roader than Thar. My guess is Jimny stays between these 2.

Although I'm not currently in a market for an off roader, I love its character and persona, I can't put a price on that, similar to a Ford Bronco where people who generally shop at higher segment look at it because it's COOL!
Also, the aftermarket is amazing for Jimny!

The biggest USP over any other car is it’s Reliability, the fact that I can take it to places where roads end. And the amazing ASA of MSA is silver lining. I like this format, its a wholesome and informative.perspective on first drive impression.
I dont get the Brezza comparisons though, the two cars have totally different remits. The only thing similar to them is the size and that alone should never be the only reason for a comparison. The demand for the Jimny has been pent up in India and many found it bemusing that it was being made in India for the rest of the world but it would not be sold in that market. Now this 5 door Jimny is being seen as a comeuppance to the world as India gets the first set of 5 doors in the world and everyone has to wait on India. Its going to sell well, prices are high globally because of the supply not matching the demand but people are still buying them and the wait lists were around a half a year. Some markets have even stopped orders for the current 3 door just to get the current demand out of the way.

Fantastic review format. I booked and then un-booked after the price was announced. I used to drive the old Scorpio, and everyone inside would whine about the body roll and pitching motion every time I braked. The Jimny will be more of that (perhaps not the pitching motion, given the light engine). I would have re-taught myself to live with body roll, lazy steering, and a 4-speed auto IF the price had been 2 or 3 lakhs lower. Not going to spend almost 17Lakhs for a car no one other than the driver will love, and that too only on a once-in-five-year trip to Leh.

I have a Jimny, 3K odd kilometres, the engine is not underpowered per se. It’s the same K15B as we have been getting on other Maruti cars however, the automatic really saps some power out of it. It’s best to go with the manual and get a good throttle controller to adjust the response from the throttle. With the small changes, the Jimny is a fun car to Drive. Both On (with its own flavour that is) and off-road. Not to mention the endless customisation options. (For example, The storage problems are fixable in around 3K thanks to the aftermarket ecosystem)
Don’t compare it to other cars. It has its own charm. It’s a car you build a relationship with. You understand it, compromise in certain things. But it rewards you in ways you will never expect.
Also, Don’t go by reviews. It’s more than the sum of its parts. Go and test drive it and you’ll know if it’s for you or not.
    Happy driving! 🎉

Love the format. It is surprising that you guys have only 75K Subs. You should have more. I wish for more.
This format of reviewing the cars and bikes is refreshing and very good. This is a nice way to take the idea that you had from the podcast and develop it further.
To make this better, may be you can take a perspective of a person who is not in the industry and then talk to each other. May be in the future you can have a third person interview one of you. That way s/he will give the feel that no-ob is asking for inputs. Quoting an example, a cricket talk show - the anchor usually hasn't played cricket at a competitive level and they ask the question. Here, the anchor can be a person who likes cars and bikes but doesn't have the background of reviewer. This 3rd party thing will open up more questions and also it will give the feeling of a common man asking questions before buying the car.
PS: If you decide you want to do that, I can send my resume. ;-)

    4) What can be the suspension overhaul cost of jimny at every suspension change interval mentioned by maruti? As both front and back are rigid axles, need to know this expenditure for the long run.

Good Questions! For Q1 and Q2 - We'll have to get the Jimmy on home ground to give you the answers! Do stay tuned. Q3 - it will be better. at least as good. Q4 - it's known for simplicity and reliability. This will not be a heavy hitter.

    #sizecompensation is a real thing!
So non the less, I think a comparison of jimny, thar, lord alto and brezza makes a lot of sense.
Will be waiting for a full size video on this. BTW great evolution from full length podcast of super meteor 650 and ioniq 5. Really loved to see the additional bits of car drive, but maybe having a few more shots would have been nicer to see (idk maybe there was an embargo or something else). Just sharing!

Great point! Also, we will be making a more detailed video on the Jimny as soon as possible.

I own a 2019 Soft Top Civilian Gypsy. Me & wife use it for long drives(1000+kms) exploring some new place atleast once in a month. Aftermarket AC works but only for front passengers.
Wife drives a Baleno/WagonR/Seltos but not very comfortable driving a Gypsy specially in City. Eyeing on a Jimny to be more city friendly considering compact & Gypsy like capabilities. A little stretched price(for me) but do u see it as a suitable replacement for a Gypsy as a cross country vehicle? A typical mile muncher for those long transport stages to reach foothills.

Try out the Zeta version of Jimmy as it has steel rims and some 6 to 7 electrical features missing as non of the auto journalist have done yet.

We’ll try to get our hands on one. But, that shouldn’t make any difference to the driving experience. Is there anything in specific you wanted to know?
