I always liked the shoe unversed because they’re a reference to a scene in Sleeping Beauty when Aurora is singing in the forest and a couple rabbits are jumping inside Prince Philip’s stolen boots.
Actually, the Mandrake's brown/orange color scheme does make some sense, some plants lose their green coloration as they age, and often brown when reaching the end of their lives.
I adore the Unversed, and next to Kirby's Magical Sweepers they've always been my favorite enemies, for creatures that are just substitutes for Emblem Heartless they look cooler and more menacing in my opinion. The normal colors fit them more but I like the colorful FM palette swaps, and the Blue Sea Salt is my favorite Unversed. It's odd how some Unversed have happy eyed expressions when they're supposed to be negative creatures.
Maybe they're supposed to represent toxic positivity, and or something like schadenfreude or putting on a happy face to hide depression, "happy" but still negative.
I always kinda preferred the way the Trinity Armor looked in final mix. As you said it kinda fits the world a bit more with its light yet threatening design. I also love the shine of the metal that they somehow were able to pull off on a psp.
BBS is the only game where I prefer pretty much all the recolours I've only played final mix so I may be biased, but I think it's weird in the original making half the unversed the same colour
thornbite might be an reference to how thorned vines/materials dig into objects or "bite" into them. that and feels like being bitten when a bunch of thorns are suddenly in a body.
They did the Unversed dirty in KH3 man, not even the Bruiser and the Scrapper making it into the game, which are the equivalent of the Soldier and Large Body.
New Red Hot Chili has a very molten earth/lava-like coloration. Vile Phial recolor has a bit of similar feel to it as well, despite not being fire-related. ...Yellow Mustard reminds me of those kinds of shiny Pokemon that are only slightly desaturated or different from the normal ones and as such hardly stick out. New Mandrake could have the impression of being a more withered or dead plant. Original Wheel Master's colors resembles Trickmaster, while the new one is...creamy. Strange. New Symphony Master makes me think of mint chocolate peppermints. (which I know I said a few times already, lol) It also has a gradient on the orange head piece thing, which wasn't on the original. New Metamorphosis looks great. And the whole thing about the Mirror Spirit becoming an Unversed always raised many questions. How...did that even happen? It made more sense at least in the original JP version since she had some red anger aura and affected the mirror with it instead of throwing a potion.
I guess the new Wheel Master they might've been trying for like, a more natural color for a spinning wheel? (though still not too great an idea, after all, I don't know of many spinning wheels that have a bunch of purple spikes on them..)
For me the vile phial with the orange gem makes sense because poison is often symbolized in nature by very bright colors such as that orange. Throw in that orange tends to be a decent enough contrast to greens and both do appear on some poisonous animals mostly poisonous frogs and I really don't mind the recolor. I personally still think the original is slightly better but not by all that much.
As someone who did play the original first and might actually be biased, I also agree with you! The redesigns are overall pretty decent. :) Its about 50/50 wich ones I prefer, but they are all fine really, except for Iron Imprisoner,
Since they come from Vanities Imagine this as a *"Devil Fruit Paramica"* power From *"One Piece"* where U can turn your own thoughts and emotions of every kind into any cosmic powered Minion shape and size that the user can make at their hearts content a horde of fledging emotions and thoughts under their complete control and can give them whatever ability depending on the shape And is allowed to make over a thousand of them and allows them to travel far across the world to their hearts content
Well Square couldn’t use artificial heartless as in universe they were not a thing yet and purebloods mainly remained in the realm of darkness at the time. I personally really like the Unversed but I can see where you’re coming from by calling them “discount heartless”.
it's pretty funny tho they eventually gave up on that (understandable as the series prolly doesn't need even more enemy species than they already have) and came up with a plot convenience later on to explain why there are emblem heartless in the past, with it also being another set up mystery for dark road and missing link lol
it would be cool if they ever re-released these games again (which they will probably do), they would give you the option of either using the original colors or the FM recolors.
I prefer the original colors cause they are a lot more cohesive and menacing and less color vomit. Some of the recolored ones I enjoy most are Mad Treant, Trinity Armor (both are good), Symphony Master, Spider Chest (more believable), Blue Sea Salt (closer color to sea salt ice cream).
Eh, counting and rewatching your other vids, I counted liking the originals over the new versions in this game to a count of 22:10, a very similar count to my KH1 count to 16:6. So...it ain't a great record. KH2 was closest to even, at 19:16. ...Yes, my life is so uneventful that I went back and rewatched the other two videos to make this post properly. You're welcome. XP
Well that's the point isn't it? If I still preferred a a lot of originals despite not playing the original of this game then it just shows I like them more overall. No nostalgia for BBS og
I feel like BBS kinda started to learn from the first two games in terms of recoloring, a lot more of the designs are decent and even preferable to the originals
Archravens although I like their design, are so annoying they should've been grabbed and thrown out similar to Griffin in DMC5 after Dante reawakens thanks to V. Guess Vanitas loves making his monsters cute and sometimes bright colored. The boss Unversed's appearance are friggin creepy btw. I have to say in KH3 the Lump of Horror has the creepiest design. From now on, I'm calling that boss Unversed from Monstropolis the Tar Monster because it's design in the second Scooby-Doo live action film(which the gorgon Scooby-Doo form from the same film compared to Monster Goofy meme kinda makes sense too...).
See I like a lot of the original designs more than the recolors. I also feel like they lack a lot of expressiveness and personality and part of that has to do with their color palette. Whoever did their redesigns went WAY too crazy with the reds and the purples and now many of them blend together and look barely distinguishable from each other at a distance or in the chaos of combat. To the point that you can only tell the difference through shape. But that doesn't work with things like the Yellow Mustard. It looks almost exactly the same as the Red Hot Chili. Their color differences are so subtle that you basically have to wait until they use an element to actually tell the difference. And a lot of the bosses just look... bad. Like objectively they look like MS paint threw up on them. And their colors often clash with the world they're in.
I found myself liking the original designs better still, but it's definitely closer than say kh1 vs kh1fm recolors, like damn, they actually learned not to just randomly change col- god damnit iron imprisoner, you had to ruin it.
As someone who played final mix only, you're 100% biased on some of the designs on heartless. A lot of them do look shit and the majority are bad, but there all some improvements

I think it's supposed to be negative emotions but happy ones. (Like greed etc)
The Japanese name for Hareraiser is laser bunny due to its ability to shoot lasers.

I love that they had the option of switching between the normal and remixed version of enemies in the HD collections. Sad that didn't happened

Just a thought, maybe you could do a video on your thoughts and opinions on the nobodies? Like talk their designs for example.
it would be cool if they ever re-released these games again (which they will probably do), they would give you the option of either using the original colors or the FM recolors.
Dream option would be to be able to toggle each individual variant so as to get the optimal version.
At first i didnt mind the color changes in the first two games, but after seeing a comparison of gaurd armor nothing will ever be the same
I do love your original vs FM comparisons 😊😊 thanks Nova for your enjoyable content
Really great stuff Nova. I love when you just talk about things.
Chortled at the ape escape mention, nice video!
Is there any chance the Shoegazer is named after shoegaze the music genre
Yes. Nova mentions it in the video.

Has there ever been a reason given for the arbitrary color changes in final mixes?

How about comparing the Spirit, Nightmare and Rare Nightmare Dream Eaters?
By far the least interesting enemy type in the series. Can't wait for him to cover KH3's enemies.

I love all of DDDs designs! They're super underrated and over hated. People need to understand they can dislike DDD while still liking parts of it.
You didn't say which color of the Spiderchest/Flame Box you prefer.
Original I guess, I'm a sucker for red and black so that's just straight colour preference

Is it just me or does the Iron Imprisoner II look like Diogenes from Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy?

The hareraiser recolor reminds me of Hatsune Miku, I always laugh a little when I see them
I mean she's popular in Japan so maybe.

The magic mirror isn't an unversed. At least I'm pretty sure. Only Vanitas can make an unversed
Yep the mandrake and raven unversed are definetly the most annoying in the game to me!
