Any time TPS does a show on delay, I’m hooked. Also, I love that Dan’s playing is so unpredictable! Most guitarists have that wheelhouse of chords/riffs that you default too when jamming around. With Dan, it’s something completely different every time, he totally lets the sounds take control of what he plays, it is a beautiful thing to behold!!!
@@ThatPedalShow this is why I miss the pick n mixes so much. Dan's playing is simply much more representative of something I might want to hear or play than any of the gear demo pages out there.
I love your show, guys. Thanks for bringing so much information to people. I even listen to the channel when I drive across Europe with my phone on the seat, NOT watching it, I must add!
I was enjoying this show a lot, and then the Jazzmaster came out and I saw the angels coming down from the heavens. Some things are meant to be together, that specific guitar with that specific delay with that specific amp = magic!

Oh just stop it will you - more pedals I need!!! Fabulous sound on that intro Daniel. That's among my favourite ways to play, and those harmonics at the end of it. Sweet. Mega. Awesome. Love it. Happy Friday!
I’m about to get the Starlight, but let’s be honest: the Belle Epoch Deluxe is in another league on the EP3 setting. And it’s not just a matter of EQ I think, it’s the voicing, the musicality, the vibe. At least hearing it from here. Did you guys feel this way in the room? That « Tourist » bit on it was simply glorious! Also glorious, Mick with a Les Paul! Cheers and thanks for the in-depth comparison guys
@@ThatPedalShow thanks for the confirmation Mick. Love the hifi and versatility (EM3/DMM/Digital) aspects of the Starlight, but really, the BED seems to belong to the category of magic boxes that bring this « je ne sais quoi », goodness, spirit, thing of its own, that we all look for in our tone quests! All the best
I am very much in agreement with Mick at the end of the video. I have owned and sold a few pedals purely because they felt like a constant rabbit hole. I need simplicity in my pedals or I will lose interest. It took me nearly a year to bother setting presets on my Wampler Terraform. Maybe I'm just lazy. Lol! Glorious sounds, gents! Much appreciated as always!
Excited to watch this one! I actually moved the Starlight on after comparing it to the MXR Echoplex and the ARDX20 I already had on my board! I used some of the funds to get the Amaze1 for the ARDX20 and have not regretted it at all. I think Mick's oft-repeated add-age about the simpler the pedal, the more creative it allows you to be, holds true here. Not that the Starlight is complicated, really! It's just complicated *enough* to get me out of playing, and messing with knobs and different modulation settings and blah blah blah. I did add the Chase Tone Secret Pre to the end of my board when I swapped the Belle Epoch Deluxe out for the MXR, so I'm getting the EP preamp with another pedal. That should be noted! The MXR really is a fantastic tape delay pedal, though, and I think so much of that has to do with ease of use! It just is pretty much impossible to make it sound bad with the controls made available to the user. I have left it on the same setting for over a year, lol!
@@ThatPedalShow It's just so good, it's dumb. I resisted buying it for a few years because of having to wait, and having the DM-2w that I also love, but it is just so damn good it is entirely in it's own league. The slap on it!!!!!! Holy shit!!!!!
Great comparison! One little thing though: Mode 2 on the Belle Epoch Deluxe is a “Dark analog voicing, inspired by classic BBD delays” (from the manual), so it makes sense why it sounds that much darker than the starlight ;) Keep going guys, love your show!!
Wow ... UA Starlight makes some really wonderful sounds; but for me the echosystem is still my pedal board go to because of MIDI control. That said I would definitely use it in a studio setting. As always another great show, thanks for sharing Messieurs!
EPIC! After the Lego tape delay show you guys made, it has become clear that what makes a delay musical for me is the compander. The "almost reverb" like drag that the analog man has is exactly that. And that is what most digital emulations miss to do well. My love for the memory man continues to grow. Please, please please compare that specific analog man with more recent ones and even the memory boy and good digital solutions that are available.
I've owned a pile of EHX DMMs, still own two, been through so very many delays, and the Walrus ARP-87 wins the delay/echo spot on my board. It doesn't mess with the dry signal, no input impedance weirdness, tone control for repeats, tap tempo for anyone who cares (not me), and most importantly, magical musical washy 3D tape-like repeats. There are things I'd love to change about it: it doesn't have 100% wet as an option as well as no self-oscillation, and for a digital delay it should have no noise whatsoever but adds audible pink noise wether bypassed or not. That said, I still can't beat it, and boy have I tried.
Man UAFX really dropped the ball on the launch of this pedal. Releasing it and spamming reviews/demos all over the place before the option to turn on the preamp colouration really didn’t do this pedal justice.
There's a lot to love with these UA pedals, and I would get the modulation pedal in a heartbeat ... if it has presets and midi. On the Delay side of things, I'm love my Strymon Volante, which I think its a great example of how a pedal can be super intuitive to use, provide midi switching unobtrusively (and, of course, sound amazing). I'm interested (and excited) to see where UA go next with their pedals.
I have the Golden Reverb and Astra Modulation pedal and love them for sound and simplicity and I think I may pull the trigger on the Starlight as well.
Did you end up getting the Starlight? I too have the Golden and Astra, and I just received the Dream 65 today as well. I also have the Strymon Timeline, but the Starlight has always caught my interest.
@AmbientMelancholy yes I did. But I ended up trading them back in about a year and a bit ago. I ended up with two H90's and absolutely love them. I am interested in the UAFX Lion.
Mick is right... I use the timeline for its tape & analog settings... the rest of the pedal is under-used. I purchased the Starlight. It sounds 1,000% better than the timeline modes for tape and DMM, especially within my stereo rig. I have my Starlight preset to toggle on the DMM when needed. Its a great pedal. I am selling the timeline to offset the cost of the Starlight. A bit frustrated with UA for not delivering the interface APP & the pedal at the same time.
Another awesome show, please do a comparison on the Golden reverberator, would love to hear your thoughts on how it compares sonically to the CXM 1978 for example.
So glad you guys featured the deluxe memory man! It’s my desert island never sell pedal - it’s just magic. It can do so much and bizarrely sounds quite tape-y..! Mick you gotta spend some time with it - does a great slapback as well! No presets required - just use your foot!
Great sounds today boys! I have the Empress which does have easy access to presets with the foot switches on the top as well as sounding awesome. I use 5 or 6 settings for my function band to cover the songs we do.
I see the Starlight more as a pedal that you would use in a studio environment, where the template is so neutral and crystal clear, it allows you to shape it the way you would want post production, In terms of EQ and in terms of gain structure.
Stereo is a must have, for me. I've run a stereo rig since 1990. My first amp was a stereo amp, and I've never felt the need to play in mono except for simple jam session type of stuff.
Not many “votes” for the Starlight. Rightfully, a lot of compliments on Dan’s playing on the intro and with the Jazzmaster……both on the Starlight. I agree there needs to be a warm dial for the EP setting of the Starlight though.
It seems to me the Starlight isn't quite there yet, though the stereo image is excellent. It Would be nice, for example, to be able to put mod effects into the feedback loop. Maybe that option will come at a later date via the app and if you own the modulation pedal. Lack of Midi and presets is definitely an issue for me on delay pedals though.
The issue here is no EP3 sound the same. I’ve heard other comparisons where the Starlight sounds spot on. The other issue is everyone wants a darker delay when there playing by themselves. In a band or lively room, that dark delay is going to get lost…
The BED doesn’t have a darker EP-3 sound- program 2 is a BBD style delay based roughly on a DM-2. And the modulation is a chorus type, not random wow&flutter like program 1.
Thanks-I was wondering about that comment. Even looked up the manual to investigate. Howard’s playlist on the catalinbread channel of his exploration of the Belle Epoch Deluxe is super handy.
“It is a big chunka thing to pull out”....😂😂😂 Mick repeating it and dropping the laugh in passing is exactly why I LOVE YOU TWO!!! Great show and the outcome of this show is that delay rules.
Just got my Starlet the other day and I'm so pleased with it. Re-watched this to get some tips and though I would agree that its on the tad bright side, I'm going to be playing a couple of gigs this month with an eight-piece reggae band, so those lush tape & and DMM dub repeats are going to cut through the mix very nicely thank you very much :) (By the way - you can store presets and call them up using the app now, via bluetooth).
Uh oh, You have fallen down the rabbit hole. Prepare to witness the unfathomable and perplexed expressions of others when you mention EL34`s,6L6`s and KT88`s..and if anybody argues solid state is no good- Refer them to Geordie from Killing Joke or Andy Gill from Gang of Four
Awesome show guys- this is one I've been hoping for ever since I saw the Golden on your board a few weeks back. You guys do a great job of not just saying "it's great" but fairly putting the pedal up against real tape and esp. the DMM. I own a DMM, and have been gigging it for over a decade. I also have a lot of digital delay modeling pedals- including the Strymon and a few TCs and Catalinbreads. Some of these are great, and offer cool controls (volante) but non yet capture the feel of an actual analog device (I'd say Catalinbreads are closest as they do have preamps) - which you guys are very honest about- you gotta have those preamps. It will be very interesting to see what UAD does with preamp models and if that factor pushes these to that extra bit of magic. Now- what I'm really interested in is the UAD golden. I've decided to buy a "new" "modern" reverb pedal, and there are now a slew of choices offering "hi fidelity" modern verb - I've narrowed this down to the Golden, the Meris Mercury 7, or the Walrus R1. One thing I don't fully understand is if these newer "hi fi" verbs are actually higher fidelity than say slightly older pedals- like is the R1 actually higher bit depth/ sample rate than their older pedals like the fathom- or is this just marketing? LOVE to see you guys do a modern, hi fi reverb shootout. Thanks!
Great show folks, I’ve been waiting for this one! I got the Startlight on launch because I’m obsessed with getting a “simple” tape delay simulator pedal with tap tempo. I’ve had so much difficulty connecting with the tape sound... just sounds thin to me. I’ve been LOVING the memory man mode however. I wish I could combine the two sounds somehow :) give me tape vibe with memory man richness and I’d be good to go :)
Man I love this stuff and will never get tired of your delay shows, but don't mind me: I was love Pedal Jams, so what do I know? I am a year or so older than Dan, but hail from the same kind of experience: racks, midi and such. But, Mick, I want to be more like you and just dial in a great all around delay and just go. LOL. I appreciate all that both of you say and play when it comes to delays. Mick: I just got a DD500 - and I will probably use less than 10% and it will be a new way to do what I have always done with delays, but I also know a may eventually midi up to the DAW and use it for other things there. But anyway, great show. Fun stuff and always a highlight of the week for me. Uncle Larry on Tone Talk tonight, btw. I'm sure that it'll be a hot mess of awesome.
Great shout on the DD-500. It’s my choice for a modern multi - Mick here. Something about the UI and the fact you can have two delays very simply at your feeet. Cracking unit!
Right on, Mick. 2 delay lines is exactly the thing that got me here. Very good modulations - and the buffer on board changed my rig to the better. Very pleased.
So it needs a tone control, presets (look like they will be in the app) and midi and it then might compete with all the other pedals in the market. Surprised that UA would release such a “simple” pedal without those features.
Those were some magical sounds. Your delay episodes never disappoint! Mick, your Casino is just sounding glorious. Your journey with it inspired me to order an Epiphone Emily Wolfe Sheraton Stealth. Even if it's not a real 335 it seemed like a very good starting point for possible upgrades. Cheers guys!
Another great one in the books! Makes for a amazing hour of guitar geekery pedal mania every Friday. Bravo! DMM sounds so good! Wish I had picked up a couple back in the 80’s when Digital displaced all the “Bad Analog” delays. Any effects pedal that offers 3 or more options for great sounds, that sound great, is a magic step up. One space on the board, multiple great sounds 👍 I’m a bit of a Luddite and I’m basically in the Mick camp. I would rather have my Strymon Flint than 10,000 choices that I will most likely never use...BUT, I love the idea of being able to sound sculpt and have a 3 or 4 layered sound pop up with one button? Overdrive>Short delay>Modulation >Reverb to Modulation>Fuzz>Long subtle delay>Reverb in one step would be Epic! Problem is the the RIGHT gear, and the learning curve?
Nice! I do object to the term Luddite though. As I’ve said many times, the Luddites weren’t afraid of technology, they were afraid of starvation. I’m not afraid of either! Ha. Hopefully you aren’t either. But we’re both fans of simplicity and function. And SOUND. Actually that’s the only thing I care about. Ha!
@@ThatPedalShow Cheers! I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve learned something every time I watch your shows! It’s like a musical! Now, if I can just stop buying Fuzz pedals...?
Wonderful Sounds from Dan & Mick again! I have come to realize that I am Analog all the way in terms of Delay. I only wish that The Catalinbread Bell Epoch and the UA Stalright had Multiple Presets and/or MIDI,
Starlight is another case for MIDI over Bluetooth (WIDI). No jacks needed if the Bluetooth supports it. Time to look into a firmware update to G3 to support using the in-built Bluetooth for MIDI!
From reading the manual it is my understanding that the preamps were always part of the wet signal, even at the time of shooting this video, and that the app merely enabled the option to also have the preamp model on the bypass. So using the APE is perhaps a bit unfair, even though it does indeed sound amazing! 😁
Great comparison. The Starlight has really great emulations, but I agree that some EQ control of the repeats would be welcome. That's one of the things that make the EchoSystem very useful even though its emulations aren't nearly as accurate, not to mention presets and you can run two different delays at once. I still want a Starlight because it's yet another bunch of great delay flavours.
Great video guys! Appreciated all of the comparisons. Throughout the course of the video my mind kept changing about what I liked best/ what would work best for me. The real tape sounded amazing but how often would I use that sound? The memory man had a magical quality about it. Yet the starlight seemed to cover both bases with extra clarity which might ultimately make it more useable. I agree with Mick though, to be able to darken the tone of the repeats would probably make it indispensable.
There is a connectivity in the sounds of the real tape echo that none of the other tape copies can duplicate . It just sound more natural and "one soundness" that the other can't copy. A better blend!!!
Loving the content as usual, having spent lockdown paring down my board to the ultimate fly rig ( D&M, Keeley Caverns, Harmonious Monk and a tuner- realistically all I need for rehearsals and most gigs....) but I’m feeling the need to have a similarly high quality bigger board & don’t want to go back to my previous mess , so by way of a thank you, I’ve decided to treat myself & pulled the trigger on a Qm6, Gigrig power and some high end cables, can’t wait to hear it all👍🇬🇧🎸
I Don't know if I need a starlight... What I do know is that I need some more memory man in my life(board)... That sound is special!☺️ Great video guys I love it when you do the splitting hair thing with things that are all epic but just sound a little bit different.

Re-watched this to get some tips and though I would agree that its on the tad bright side, I'm going to be playing a couple of gigs this month with an eight-piece reggae band, so those lush tape & and DMM dub repeats are going to cut through the mix very nicely thank you very much :)
(By the way - you can store presets and call them up using the app now, via bluetooth).
Eight months on and still loving it, just wish there was MIDI preset functionality.
Yes Dan, that intro was magical 👍
First TPS since buying my first tube amp... I feel different!
Hooray! Welcome Colin. You’re family now.
@@ThatPedalShow You're my wife now Colin
@@newbluecyborg I'm Colin. And so is my wife.
So what did you get ?
Thanks!
I really wish you guys had turned on the preamp for the Starlight here to show how close it could get to the original.
Is its digital/software preamp any good?!
Check out the empress Tape Delay..... oooooops!
@@ThatPedalShow sigh .... the journey never ends!
Lately the colors of your videos are super sharp! Awesome!
Thanks! That’s what full frame and insanely expensive cameras brings. Hahaha. Doh. Why do we do this!?
@@ThatPedalShow because buying golf clubs isn’t as appealing!
You are so right!
That DMM is special, it has like an almost swell effect like how the Echorec does, I want one
Yeah, it’s a magic sounding thing
Fantastic sounds from both of you gents today
TPS always makes me smile, but the Neil Finn (and family) story about the Memory Man melted my heart :)
That thing really does sound epic! That last Jazzmaster jam was really beautiful. You can just get lost forever in that sound!
Perhaps that brightness the Starlight has is why UA put an 'always-on' preamp switch on the back of the Orion?
Another tonetastic tonetasting! Cheers friends.
You guys always inspire me to pick up the guitar Thank you soo much ❤️
Yes! Nice one!
One space on the board, multiple great sounds 👍
I’m a bit of a Luddite and I’m basically in the Mick camp.
A Neil Finn decorated Memory Man, seriously amazing Dan!
To that intro jam; “we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!!”
🤓🙏
Wonderful Sounds from Dan & Mick again! I have come to realize that I am Analog all the way in terms of Delay. I only wish that The Catalinbread Bell Epoch and the UA Stalright had Multiple Presets and/or MIDI,
I really love seeing Mick enjoy the casino. Just brings a smile to my heart
I feel like I’ve been slacking missing the last couple weeks but your definitely helping me through some serious crap so tone one brothas!!
Please do the Golden Starlight Reverb as well! The EMT140 Plate is *really* special. Check out Joe Gore's review. Magic.
Dan, man, we need to hear you more on that jazzmaster !
🤓🙏
That’s about the middle and both ends of it we think. Thank you!
Man, I miss the Mallard + Lazy J combo! Tone King & Two Rock sounds incredible though
Dan that intro was amazing!
Gordon Freeman is a great guitar player. 😁
I just picked up the UAFX Del-Verb. I love the sounds but do wish had MIDI.
Kingsley Tube Echo would be a dream..
The Memory Man seems to have a warm tone wave that ebbs & flows nicely (35:32).
Half a TPS episode for the commute to work, the other half for the commute home. Delays everywhere! Cheers cheers cheers cheers from the Big Apple.
Cheers to Le Pomme Grand!
The list of pedals I want to try is so long. I love your show!
There is a connectivity in the sounds of the real tape echo that none of the other tape copies can duplicate . It just sound more natural and "one soundness" that the other can't copy. A better blend!!!
I’m with you. Mick here.
@@ThatPedalShow I feel Catalinbread has come the closest ( thus far ), but my Boss DD-500 is "Tweakable" until infinity.
If someone produced a true stereo actual tape delay it would be mine!
Loving the content as usual, having spent lockdown paring down my board to the ultimate fly rig ( D&M, Keeley Caverns, Harmonious Monk and a tuner- realistically all I need for rehearsals and most gigs....) but I’m feeling the need to have a similarly high quality bigger board & don’t want to go back to my previous mess , so by way of a thank you, I’ve decided to treat myself & pulled the trigger on a Qm6, Gigrig power and some high end cables, can’t wait to hear it all👍🇬🇧🎸
Awesome, nice one John! Dan will be very grateful! Enjoy that rig!
I Don't know if I need a starlight... What I do know is that I need some more memory man in my life(board)... That sound is special!☺️ Great video guys I love it when you do the splitting hair thing with things that are all epic but just sound a little bit different.
