    This really makes you question and think about which effects you "need." Sometimes you want a particular sound, but other times you just want some kind of movement/adding of depth, and you see from this episode that a lot of them can work for that.

    Johnny Marr just used a regular Fender amp with tremolo, on How Soon is Now, rather than square wave, and played the famous Bo Diddley chug over the top at the same speed as the tremolo effect. There’s a video where he explains and demonstrates it.

    That movement Dan's talking about with vibrato is something I love to do with tremolo, especially on my acoustic shows. Very subtle, fairly slow. Just makes it sound more alive. First time I ever tried a wet dry rig I used tremolo and a ping pong delay. I sat between both amps while my brother in law played big open chords, and cried. So incredible sounding.

    I'm going to have to go to a 12 - step program, but this time for Dimension C: - "My Always - On Pedal". It's the sound of my youth. I love what mod effects do to the EQ, & not just the churning & bubbling they're known for.

      As I understand it’s that’s an effect in Pro Tools rather than played on the guitar - I believe the band don’t play it live either and rely on a backing tape (my acronym) - so it’s square wave tremolo but not using a tremolo pedal.

    To: Dan and Mick Message: Can I make a humble suggestion? Take a look at the Anderton's tone room. They've got warm lamps on and strings of lights. There are warm and bright accents all around their room. The new pedal shed is still looking cold, dark, blue and a bit depressing. That black curtain feels like a dark void encroaching from your left and right and it takes up 1/3 of the total screen. I love your show. Your knowledge and experience have been so helpful to me. I continue to watch because the two of you are great players and I'm always learning. So thanks for that. The room could just be a bit easier on the eyes.

    • @OriginalBlueFrankie
      @OriginalBlueFrankie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Zinger - Actually I couldn't care less about that. It's more about the psychology of color. Think about how many hours you spend watching TPS. It would be nice if the color scheme wasn't depressing, which it is.

    Coming from the early 1990s shoegaze crowd, my sound back then was absolutely swamped with VB-2 vibrato, PN-2 tremolo, and CE-3 chorus, all feeding into a PS-2 delay and RV-2 reverb, which then hit my Ampeg VH-140C's reverb and chorus, but on my current pedalboard, the only modulation effect is a tc electronic Shaker vibrato, unless you count my tc electronic Mimiq as a modulation effect.
    The Boss CE-3 can be used like a VB-2 Vibrato. Just plug into Output A only, and use the Mode II setting, which outputs Wet on A/Dry on B. If I'm not mistaken, the CE-3 and VB-2 use the same Panasonic BBD chipset. That was how I used to simulate that thing Kevin Shields does with the vibrato arm on his guitar whilst strumming, which I could not do, since I played a Rickenbacker 330.

    The flanger as a chorus thing is why I love the Deco so much. It can get very chorus like, and even vibey, while also being flangy. I think I just made up a lot of words, but it's just an amazing pedal. Thanks as always for the show.

    • @proteusswarm7291

  • @billphillipstube

    1. The ADA flanger sounded great. Best I've heard of it in a demo. Got to try this out.
    2. The big knob on the fuzz with all the little value lines is amusing. My knowledge of geometry tells me it gives no more fine control than any other pot knob, but it is definitely gives an illusion of more control. It is a maths placebo.
    3. Another technique is "subliminal tremolo." Set time of tremolo to be on the ones of the measure. You can't really hear it, but it adds movement.

  • @giannoncene
    @giannoncene 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Another thing I really love about Strymon Timeline is it's Dual mode in Parallel mode. On stage I usually go stereo using one main amp with quarter notes + modulations like Tremolo, Filter, Phaser etc. and the other amp with dotted eight notes with a higher mix and more repeats but without any modulation, with kill dry.
    So basically on the left amp you hear your main delay with modulations and the right amp with ONLY dotted eight notes without the modulation effects. It's literally amazing.

  • @cyrusfontaine2598
    @cyrusfontaine2598 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I use a vibrato in mono, but I run it before a short, subtle delay, and it kinda creates a natural chorus sound that feels less wobbly and structured than a normal chorus pedal. It's hard to shut off once I've started!

  • @JDGreen916
    @JDGreen916 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That part in Won't Get Fooled Again is actually a pre-recorded synthesized track, similar to what they did in Baba O'Riley. Fun fact: In the early 70's footage Pete Townshend can still be seen manually cranking the volume on his amp for solos, then rolling it back off.

    Mick, I always had trouble with Phaser vs Flanger as well. I think the way I delineate between the two is Flange happens "around" the notes and Phase happens "to" the note. Similarly, I think tremolo and harmonic tremolo act the same. Harmonic tremolo seems to happen "around" the notes and tremolo happens "to" the notes. PS. THAT FLANGER ON THE DELAY REPEATS! glorious glorious glorious. Thanks, guys and cheers!

    Went straight to the board after watching this and got a heap of new sounds! A lite Chorus and a bit more modulation on the boss RV-5 and overdrive sounded huge! Even managed to sniff out a new song. Just for the halibut, the octave with the delay time right up on the EHX canyon is not a bad organ! Thanks for the tips guys! Keep up the “ace” work.

    The "Jet plane" modulation was done back in the day in one box. Ibanez had the Jetlyzer, which was a drive - fuzz perhaps - and a phaser in the same box. I'm sure there was also a box called the Jetphase which may have been from Roland. Both boxes came out in the late 70's from memory.

Many would say it enhances their ability to play with feel and creativity and a huge part of the sound is what is going on in the mind of the musician. I wonder if an aspect of our love for those slightly phased/modulated textures on drive sounds has to do with our expectation of that type of sound from various famous recordings; it seems to me that often time to track guitar and make them sound big you usually intentionally introduce some skewed phase relationship either through double tracking or the physical phenomena of mic placement. Modern recordings that seem to remove all of this sound sterile imo by comparison. Phase never ceases to amaze me as this unique phenomena that sits somewhere in between our relative perception of a thing or sound artifact and the thing itself, I think that’s why it’s so captivating when it’s slightly manipulated, brings this human quality to the sound, that “movement”

    For #2 organ sound, try using CS1 maxed out into a light over drive and I use the sub n up but most octavers would work ... Then throw on a phaser or flashback and you're in organ y heaven!

    The Ibanez Airplane Flanger is a copy of Gilbert's vintage ADA Flanger big box. He manually moved the enhance knob for the effect on the original, but the Take Off Mode on the Ibanez simulates it.

    I loved this show all cool sounds and textures, all done very musical. this I got unlike that show 2 weeks back. As a side note I went and listened to almost all of Radioheads Discograpy and well just not a fan I stopped listening to commercial radio in the 80's. so the only time I hear anything after the 70's is when my wife forces me to listen to it in the car. So maybe I have missed a lot of good music. When you guys play it is very inspiring!!!!

    Mick, Simon mega thank you for adding the timestamps! I learn about a lot of new bands and songs from your videos(Blake Mills for instance). Is anyone here cataloguing the songs/artists discussed in TPS episodes?

    Guys, thank you for everything you do! You’ve been instrumental in my electric guitar journey (and acoustic too actually).
    I have a cellist friend who has just discovered electric cello, specifically 2cellos and I’m planning to direct him to you, and a video like this will hopefully help him understand some of the basics. Along those lines, I also work with some young guitarists starting out, what would you guys think of a quick overview video of all of the basic effect sounds so the young folks can direct their rabbit trails? (Also, this is my wife’s account, I guess I should get my own, don’t mind the username...) -Aaron

    Ace episode guys! I'm a techie and I have a good grasp of Dan's explanations. However, when it comes to Flanger vs Phaser vs Univibe, I characterize their fundamental sound thusly - Swirly, Chewy and Syrupy. I believe those are technical terms, no? :-) Thanks for the tip on changing the speed for dynamic effect. I sold my Deja Vibe that had the built-in treadle when I bought my Mini Deja Vibe (which I thoroughly love). No worries, you reminded me that I can use an expression pedal to change the speed on the fly. Off to the woodshed!

    Now realise how closely related these “modulation” types are,
    I only use a Strymon Mobius for Modulation, but now hope to get the most out of this machine.
    I know you guys aren’t the biggest fans of amp’s effects loops, but please could you explain their pro’s and con’s when used for modulation. Great Show

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pros: keep effects 'clean' if you use gain in the amp; keeps digital effects away from the front end of your amp and gain stages with pedals. That's it.
      Cons: FX loops are woefully inconsistent from amp to amp in terms of tone/level/headroom; often very tone-sucky on long cable runs; if you use nice analog mods, you miss all the lovely interaction with the drives and amp; brings a whole new world of ground loops and isolation issues.
      They're essential for some styles of music -basically anything that uses high gain amps where 'clean' verbs and delays are a must. You're essentially treating your loop effects like outboard gear. But for the kind of sounds Dan and I tend to go for and the amps we use, FX loops are unnecessary and kinda spoil that glorious interaction of truly great pedals. Hope that helps!

    I assume all drives were placed before modulation, but it would have been helpful to hear that mentioned. Also, each time you added drive, it would have been cool to hear it quickly switched after modulation to show the different tones possible. I know from experience that drives may squeeze the movement modulation would achieve, but, as with Phaser before or after Fuzz, both are sweet sounds. A brief minute or two demonstrating the difference that happens for each modulation would be enlightening, and helpful to so many players out there searching for new tones. Keep up the wonderful content. This was still highly illuminating.
