Classic Character Delay & Echo Sounds For Guitar: Which Would You Choose? - That Pedal Show

  • We explore classic ‘character’ delay types including Echoplex & Space Echo (tape), Echorec (drum), Memory Man (analogue) and oil can types: which is your favourite?
Life too short for long TH-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! You could definitely say that Dan and I are big fans of ‘character’ delay sounds. From the behemoth Binson Echorec T7E to Roland Space Echoes, the Maestro Echoplex and more, we have done many a deep dive on these cornerstones of guitar echo tones (please check out our Delay & Reverb playlist in this channel).
What we haven’t done however is a more entry-level/overview-type comparison video to give newcomers a basic idea of the key schools of character delay… erm, until now.
In this episode we leave out the vintage esoterica and ultra-boutique unobtanium and instead assemble our faves in the current character delay pedal world in order to inspire you towards some more inspiration and fun with the humble echo pedal.
Do we need to repeat that? Yes - endlessly!
    Enjoy the episode…

The example of how the bucket brigage is better for staying out of the way due to the absence of transients is a great example of how this show helps people have words for things they intuitively get, but lack the vernacular and discrete comprehension.

You’re doing the right thing man. Just keep digging in and see what you can learn. The only thing I would offer is this...: I would start off with a more “ basic” delay pedal. Like a Boss or something. Just because that will really give you an idea of exactly what you like and what you don’t like and it will be relatively easy to learn. Than you could decide if you want more or what. Some pedals just have a huge learning curve is what I’m trying to say. Sometimes you just want to get in there and start making music instead of memorizing a huge manual. I always used Boss as a “guidepost”. They always sound great and you will definitely know if you like delay or not. If you do, you can keep it as they are tried and true or you can go ahead and get one of the expensive “ do it all” delay pedals if you want to dive that deep. These guys have done some really great shows dedicated to just that!!

One of my jobs as a roadie for my cousin's band in the mid 70's (in addition to lugging a full Marshall stack, an SVT, and a B3 with a Leslie!) was to manipulate the slider on the Echoplex at the end of "Suffragette City" so that we got "Suffragette!- gette! gette! gette!". I would then push it into oscillation. Freaky!

19:20 For those on a budget who want a Roland Space Echo type pedal, I recently purchased a NU-X "Tape Core Deluxe" pedal and I highly recommend it -- you can switch between all seven "tape head" combinations on the unit. It's really inexpensive, even has tap tempo and a loop function. I'm having loads of fun with it. It's certainly not as fancy as the Boss version you've got here, but for the price, it's superb. I paid $125 (Australian dollars). It costs less than $100USD and roughly 55 quid (maybe a bit more) UK. And I've been playing heaps of Shadows tunes since I bought it too. It's got that warm tapey sound.

When you guys did a delay roundup ages ago I fell for the Old Blood Noise Black Fountain after much comparison with the Adineko, not only for the sound but the graphics as well. Paired with my trusty old DD-3 which I've had since the early '90s I can get more sounds than I have time to explore.

Delay is the human experience, man created digital delay to replicate analog, we as carbon based entities, like analog delay grow ,swell and decay, but it's rich ,warm , and glorious, ,i hope everyone has a great and analog saturated weekend

    • @TheRealcdawg22
      @TheRealcdawg22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's not exactly so. I absolutely love real analog delay, but from the point of veiw of engineers of their day analog delay had shortcomings. It wasn't until after digital technology was implemented that the users felt it to be somewhat sterile and began to miss the sound of the old tech. It's a similar thing with valve amps. It's the imperfections that impart a human kind of beauty to the creation and reproduction of the music.

  • @paulmatulevich3623
    @paulmatulevich3623 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Sorry to piggy back my comments, but when you brought up problematic systems, oil cans had a huge one that really killed them! The viscosity control on the Adineko was for the electrolytic oil because it would congeal when it got cold and would even clot which was hell on the motors and whatnot.

Great video. The RE-20 is an underrated, totally amazing delay pedal which is 95% close to the original RE-201 sound-wise. In case you don't keep it on your board, it is a great studio tool still due to the tap tempo and ramp-up feature. We even tried to re-amp a vocal track through it with great results. A secret weapon for Josh Homme, Johnny Greenwood, Caleb Followill, Jamie Cook, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brad Paisley, Brent Hinds, Paul Weller and countless others.

@@bobilly its been a minute since I had the non deluxe but from what I can remember, it’s not worlds apart but I think the deluxe is sweeter sounding. I think the regular version has a trim pot inside that controls the gain. Don’t think it changes brightness. The deluxe doesn’t have that but I’ve never cared. I run it like Mick where it’s on almost all the time and I use an expression to blend in delay. CB took more care in replicating the pre amp in the deluxe right down to the 22V rails the original EP had. I run it after my drives but into a modded GE7 running at 18V where I tweak some high end up before going into the front of my amp. I’ve got it in the loop of a switcher so sometimes I do put it before drives. It took me a minute to warm up to it when I made the switch. It doesn’t do as much wow and flutter as non deluxe as this video showed. But now it’s just part of my rig and don’t see letting it go 🤘🏽

Awesome episode, and learned a lot. I'm so addicted to the swell of the Boonar I can hardly bring myself to play without it now. I run it with the tone all the down so that it further "sits in the back". I realize after watching this that by doing this I'm de-emphasizing the transient on the repeats (which can be very "peaky" on a drum echo).

I have a funny story: last year I bought a real tape echo. Plugged it in at the end of my chain, and started playing. My body relaxed and spirit soared as I heard those first echoes: ‘yes! This is the sound I’ve been waiting for!’ That high pass shimmer with the perfect saturation and a pleasing touch of warble. Adjusted the time, hmm it’s not changing. Maybe that pot is screwy? Adjusted the feedback, no change. Then I realized that there was something wrong with it and what I’d been hearing all along was my BED, which I’d forgotten to turn off.

The DD2, DD3 and so forth were designed IMO to be run through the effects loop rather than being such an in your face delay. I like it in the loop for its delay trails. I have used my DD3 since they first were introduced but have never liked it in front of my amps. It is definitely more loop-friendly.
I love my analog delays by the way. I run one through my effects loop and the other in front of the amp

I find the idea of embracing imperfection interesting, too. I have a Strymon DIG and that emulates the imperfections of early digital delays, from a time when there were big constraints in processor speed and memory, so the algorithms of the time had to work within those limitations. And it turns out those characteristics are pleasing.
This sort of thing happens a lot in photography, too.

Great show, Thanks! My present delay setup is a TRex Replicator Jr and a TC Flashback2 with a tap tempo pedal. Set up with the FB2 on dotted eights, cascading into the RJr, with the Tap tempo pedal close to the RJr tap tempo footswitch, so I can tap both at once. Getting a kind of fake multi head effect on the RJr. As the icing on the cake I have a vibrato pedal (EQD Aqueduct) further up the signal chain, so the vibrato into the delays creates a chorus feel. Love it!

In the US, as far as I have experienced, we say Belle Epoch the same way. bell EE-pock. And, Belle Epoch has become my only delay for now. It's just absolutely perfect. Not only does it nail the Echoplex better than anything out there, it's got a Bucket Brigade Mode, DMM Chorus Mode, DMM Vibrato Mode, and a Leslie simulated delay and a sweepable resonant filter delay. It really packs a lot, and everything it can do, it does brilliantly. No afterthought slapped on features here.

Good old analog delay going into self oscillation is what absolutely hooked me on delay pedals. Still have my first one, some off brand 80’s or 90’s with the killer MN3005 BBD. It sure doesn’t boast the longest delay times but man does it sound good. You can do a lot with a max of 350ms.
I’m still amazed that the Boss RE:20 is the only dedicated Space Echo emulation. Would love to hear Howard’s take on the RE:201 with all of the multi head options and spring reverb. If he put the same care into it as the Belle Epochs and EchoRec it would be an instant classic. I’d buy two as soon as they went on sale.

My Memory Man had a Chorus mode. The Memory Man, my MXR Flanger, and my original Morley Power Wah have hardwired AC cords. All eventually became bad noise sources. Not sure if it’s the from the AC cords or the internal transformers.

Hey guys thanks a lot for putting it all these videos and helping me find that delay tone. I've settled with multi head tape delays. As Mick says once you start down the multi head path there's no going back. Another must for me is the record level knob for that overdrive sound. That's something that can't be beat.
I've settled with the Volante because it does drum, tape and studio grade tape which gives great higher fidelity echoes similar to digital. I was instantly sold on it when Mick did the head panning demo that blew Dan away. Awesome feature.
Two other great features are having incredibly short delays which are mechanically imposible un a physical unit and the sound on sound feature. The former allows for some great chorus sounds and the later for a the usage of a second delay whose tape length can be trapped in. Some truly amazing sounds can come out of this with really great character.

I’ve wondered why some delays have a “warped” or wavy (sea sick) type sound. Now I know it’s undoubtedly in the “oil can” category - and I know which type to avoid because that’s definitely not for me. Clean and “spacey” (RE-20, Echopark, DD-3) is music to my ears (pun intended of course). Thanks again, chaps, for the ongoing pedal education 👍 🍺

Great show gents. I'd love to see more of this round up style with other types of pedals.
Mick, folks in the States would pronounce belle and epoch as you do. However, when you say them together, they don't sound like two distinct words to me, and my American ear definitely hears "belly pock". I think that if I had never seen an episode of TPS and was asked to pronounce the name of the pedal, I would put a very deliberate pause between the belle and the epoch precisely so that this doesn't happen.

Or just the humble PT1229 chip and how its probably closer to analogue in sound than a lot of DSP pedals which are different beasts. The DD-2 is just one, but it has some warmth to it, isn't super-clean and sort of behaves a bit like analogue, except much clearer as you'd expect yet nowhere near sterile. Its lofi, 12bit.. But DSP style, thru something programmed, unless with complex emulation is a very exact replicator. I had an old soviet LM1229 and that was more screwed up and dirty than most analogue delays. Crazy as hell oscillation. Ive had tag-on delays in multifx that have been just not only exactly replicating but somehow making the repeats tone-less...
For that i dont think "digital" is really an honest categorisation. For another point its also that all these tape emulators are actually digital. And another- experimental delays tend to be such as granular, reverse and pitch delays, maybe ones on the edge of digital reverb too
