I use different amplifiers for each different repeat. I have been experimenting with using different effects and I reckon that I could make them sound like different guitars. Then again, once I develop my poor man's Rick-o-Sound that will be even easier. :)
Plug your phone into your pedalboard (this may require an adapter) and use that to repeat someone else's sound. Or, you could use an old walkman for that authentic analogue warmth.
Option paralysis is , indeed, a substantial bane in most creative endeavors.When you combine the initial learning curve with the time and effort it takes in" hands on" modes,(though most of us are more than passingly familiar in our daily lives with scrolling endless menus), - it is not unlikely to acheive a dead stop.Personally, not only am I not experienced with complex programs, but I've also found them largely detrimental to my specific purposes .A DD7 and Ditto looper are about as much as I might successfully incorporate, with the EHX Freeze being about my natural speed.Like Clint said , so long ago,- " A man's got to know his limitations"...
I found this channel yesterday.... have watched around 7hrs of content since. Considering I worked a 14hr shift in that time I’d say that’s about 79% of my spare time. Yet I’ve managed to only buy one pedal in that time. Incredible channel!! Honest and thorough. Amazing content boys!! Also a MASSIVE fan of the fact you timeline you videos in the description. I know this episode is 4 years old now, but I find myself a couple times a month coming back to it for this beautiful intro. Mick, you are such a beautifully expressive musician. Your approach to the guitar has done so much for my playing ability as well as my spirit. Dan, you’re also a great musician, and a soul that visibly is madly in love with music. I watch you get lost in the moment, which is genuinely precious to witness! This intro and the fuzz episode intro almost always brings me to tears. I am truly inspired by the work you both do! I hope you guys see this comment so you can understand how much your passion for new musical creation has helped me through some very difficult days. I would love to see an avantgarde gear challenge, bit crushers, ringmodulators, step-filters, etc. I would find it very interesting to see someone that understands gear on your level, make sense of effects like that.
Kind of interesting that we like the sound of the imperfections, and those are the result of not having the technology to perfectly repeat the sounds in the early days, even though that almost certainly was the goal at the time.
All (well, a lot of) guitar sound seems to be about that; Valve amplifiers? Distortion and fuzz being staples on a board. Most of guitar music is at the opposite end of High Fidelity. EDIT: To clarify, that is a part of the whole thing that I value highly in a world that focusses so much on a verbatim transmission of perceived ideals.
This was a good format. Kudos. Things I know about delay: * If tempo is critical to your delay setting in a song, it will never be right during the song at the gig. * Sometimes Tap tempo doesn’t set the right tempo. Likely user error, but at the gig “things occur.” * Changes to effect level will have to be made to suit your venue. * Speaker mic compression at the sound board will change your delay levels in the monitor mix. * Playing bone dry is harder than having some delay * Delays give you magic moments. Synergy: sometimes you kick in a delay and the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.
In 1986 I had my Digitech PDS-2000 and it was my pride and joy. I also had the DOD FX-55 Distortion and two Arion Japan modulation pedals: the chorus and the phaser. I was full of myself with these, as pedals were not nearly as available as we see today. It took me a decade to understand why i needed this delay and what i could do with it. Without having it demonstrated or being able to just watch a video on it, i had no idea how many ways delay could be used and how many sounds require it. I have 3 delay's on my board now and have one on all the time. I still own these pedals and still use several of them.
This video, could not have come at a better time. Early in 2019, I made the switch from a multi effects unit to pedals (that's TPS's fault btw). I'm one of the guys Mick spoke about. I figured I'd need a delay and bought a boss DD7. I've barely used it, the repeats are too clean for me. I'm now desperate to try more ambient delays and this vid helped a ton. Boss DD-500 ended my search. So many choices & options with deep-dive editing, tweaking & customization. Learned alot from watching "Countless Hours" of TPS, to get my Delay patches right. Thanks guys.
I've lost count on how many delay related videos you have created, but I never get tired of watching them. The pedal selection has quite changed and expanded from the past videos over the time, also in versatility. Essentially this communicates to me maybe about the renaissance of delay. Especially the colored, full of character delay. Some years back you got some standard delays like digital and some classic analog ones. Carbon copy came out and stole the show. Now you have room filled with stuff like the actual tape boxes rereleased or reinvented, echoplex simulator, multiple record head simulated, analog with digital controls and modulation, digital delays that model all kinds of delays and do very creative tricks. Flashback being not the least. I have to consider this in bigger perspective too and see how the pedal industry might be richer than ever (by no means my own idea, I think you've voiced it out loud before too). There are plenty of DIFFERENT options with everything, all kinds of units coming out from classic and legendary to industry standard tools, work horses, to creative and totally utopistic inventions. Such a lovely time to be a guitarist. And it warms my heart, because now I love delay and would most of the time have delay always on. Despite the fact that the first times I tried delays it was a disgusting mess that sounded nasty and disorienting. Yup, I had the same experience as Mick, digital delay being the only available type on modelling or multi effects units. It has its uses but only now I can think of delay without sneering and I've learned of all the beautiful ways of how it can enrich your tone. Today delay is my instant second choice of pedals after all the things that make distorted noise, from boosters to drives etc. It creates tone and character, not just ear puncturing copy repeats. Great recommendation on the DD 200 as a starting point for delay. I picked one up over the holidays and have loved the versatility it offers. The tape and drum modes are really well done - great if you want to start exploring multi-head delays with all those cool rhythmic repeats. Just enough knobs and options to tailor your sound without needing to constantly refer back to the manual
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town....As an old geezer that's used every delay under the sun (feels that way) including having owned from EP-3's and RE-201's to Timelines and Echorecs I am thrilled that I actually have more to learn!!!! Sorry guys! Got a bit delayed watching this one... (cue groans)... but... it has given me the chance to read all the comments 1st and it's obvious you guys really have helped many people choose which delay pedal is right for them. This is succinctly noted with quite a few viewers stating - almost with sighs of relief - that the solution to their particular requirement is simply a single MXR Carbon Copy (or similar) and can detect an almost 'light bulb switching on' moment for them. That is why this channel really exists! Superb job well done!
Delay Llama is an epic name for a pedal. I love that punsters can still get paid work in this day and age. I've spent 20 minutes trying to come up with a good one to use in this comment but I literally give you one.

This is one of your best show imo. I mean, your shows are always entertaining and informative, but this one is so well written and exhaustive it feels necessary. Delay has been my "next gear purchase" for a long time and I find it very difficult to get a clear idea of what I need and what is best for my guitar playing. Sometimes it's pleasant to see a content that covers the basics in context in a way most of us will find it useful. The same way the show about "the right overdrive" had me finally achieving this endless quest and realize all I needed was a Boss BD-2.
One good compromise is to get a TC Flashback Mini to go along with a core delay. For $60 used it will give you access to the whole TC library, which is awesome. To me the 2200 is the best sounding digital delay ever, and there is tons more in a little pedal. When I just want another flavor for one song it’s perfect.
Great job as always, gents. I started out only wanting digital delay, and over time I've gradually become much more interested in analog and tape style sounds. This Show in particular has shown me what those sounds can *really* do and how to make the most of them, in a way that I never discovered in my formative guitar years. Many many thanks for your continued service to tone, and for the efforts you go to in order to help wee guitar chaps like me. 👍

I would love to see you guys get Tosin Abasi on your show. He’s big into pedals and plays so many styles. I could see you 3 having a blast of a time together.
As you might guess, the Catalinbread Echorec is my fav delay pedal ever. It is pure magic. As you guys discuss, what really makes this and a few other pedals shine is the preamp. It's not just about the sound of the repeats, or the functions and modes- it's those special pedals- like my old memory man- that when you step on it your sound changes- it gets bigger, fatter- more energetic- what have you. Many companies - like strymon, TC, Eventide etc- make great sounding digital modeling delays- but only a few companies integrate a preamp into their pedals- and it's this preamp that gives a few pedals that special something- where you step on it and it's more than just "repeats". Catalinbread have been doing this for years with the Echorec and the incredible Belle epoch (old ones and the new deluxe line)- killer stuff. Anyway- a fun follow up to this could explore more esoteric delays and or esoteric sounds. My favorite part of this video was the weird pitch warping you guys did with the new JAM pedal. A deeper dive into that sort of territory would be really fun! Thanks guys- great show!

I've been around the block many times and I keep coming back to: One good, dedicated analog delay like a Maxon AD-9 pro, DM-2, etc One fairly comprehensive digital delay, or a simple but high-end digital delay (eg Source Audio Nemesis/T-Rex Replica, respectively) Two. You always need two. It's like the Sith.
Loved this!!!! Wow, my story is EXACTLY the same as Mick's. I bought a Boss DD3 years and years ago. Because guitarists are supposed to have a delay pedal, right? I absolutely HATED it! An exact facsimile of what I'd just played coming back at me. NO, just NO! It went straight on eBay. Fast forward a good few years; That Pedal Show comes into my life. I again decide to dip my toe into the world of delay. But this time I'm a little more cautious, I buy the Mooer Ana for £50..... I now own the Strymon Brigadier and I absolutely love it. It's beautiful textural repeats that never get in the way, wonderful! Thanks guys :-)
Really interesting to read interviews with the Edge when he moved from the Memory Man (Boy, October & War) to the Korg SDD-3000 digital delay (Unforgettable Fire) and how he had to change his playing style. Compare 'I Will Follow' to 'Bad' to hear the difference.
I wholeheartedly prefer the overall tones and songs of earlier U2, and I think a lot of that has to do with the quirks of the Memory Man, especially since it was more or less the only pedal they had (outside of a drive, which doesn't really count).
It's important to understand the two ways to alter the delay time. You can alter the number of steps before you play it back (akin to moving the head on the EP3, and what most digital devices do) or you can alter the sample rate (akin to changing the tape motor speed on the EP3, and what bucket brigade devices do). The former only affects playback, the latter also affects recording speed. No one other than me cares about this, but it makes a difference. Seriously.
I had always dialed a "dotted 8th" slightly modulated, then just adjusted the amount of mix depending on the need for always on or loud and rhythmic. Followed by a small amount of amp reverb. 20 years that was great. Since this show and Pedal companies going nuts, I have upgraded to Source Audio delay/reverb and working with a few preset sounds for application. I love my old BBD but times have changed and there is more than ever at our finger tips now, and we can still keep it simple sir!
I can’t remember if it was this episode or the reverb one, but Dan showed a stereo hack if you have only 1 amp...wiring it back on itself. Well, I just did that with my digitech obscura delay into my polara reverb and then wired it back to the delay again. HOLY shit guys. Absolutely amazing!
Hey guys, long time viewer, first comment. Maybe my first youtube comment ever? Anyway, I loved Dan's 'history of the delay pedal' and the grand canyon example, because it sparked a memory I had of a very old illustration. It depicts a device that consists of series of four walls spaced at very specific distances, so that when one shouted 'Amore!' from one point, an echo off of the walls would yield 'Amore! More! Ore! Re!' which translates to (roughly) 'Love! Behavior! Words! Action!' in latin, which is just a beautiful thing linguistically, honestly. This device was conceived of by a 1600s jesuit polymath, Athanasius Kircher (written and illustrated in Musurgia Universalis) and the idea came about around the first time we (humans) were rationalizing and scientifically interrogating the physical phenomenon of the echo. I just wanted to share this because Dan's little quip on experiencing the actual physical phenomenon of the echo and translating that into a device has a long and rich history that is endlessly interesting. A timely video for me, with echoes of Mick's comments on not 'getting' delay and option paralysis. I've been working through the different types on a Line6 M5 struggling to get many of them to sit right, and this video has helped get things into focus and I have just picked up a secondhand Foxgear Echosex Baby. Thanks.
On the topic of slapback delay in country and rockabilly: I picked up my best tips for slapback delay from a video of Danny Gatton, who used a Boss DD-2, one repeat, delay set roughly equal in volume to the guitar’s original signal. It’s almost obnoxious by itself, but it really works much better for slapback to use a bright, clear, loud delay in a band context.
I think the tc flashback 2 should had been displayed here since it can do many things (like stereo ping pong, reverse, etc) and its fairly simple yo use and affordable. Another one is the eqd avalanche run
I've had the original Flashback x4, and I keep coming back to it, because it's so easy to use live. I might trade for a new one, and I say that having owned a Timeline.
After watching your episode with Devin Townsend I knew I needed the ocean machine. I love all the crazy sounds it can do that other delays can't. Picking the right delay is just as critical as the right drive pedal.
I got a Way Huge Supa Puss about this time last year for something primarily analog with modulation that could also be very tonally sculpt-able and include tap tempo and subdivisions. I have been loving it since! I dont use it too very often but when I hear delay on an idea in my head its my go to! It will probably live on my board for a very long time!
A friend of mine nicknamed me 'the man with more delays than a privatised bus company' more than 25 years ago. I still own quite a few of 'em. :-P Most of them analog. I personally love the 'analog' sound, with the usual decay, but my EHX Canyon performs great as well (awesome number of options), and the small form factor does a lot of good as well. Basically I use but 1 setting, tape delay. That's quite enough for me. This 'narrowing down' of options and possibilities is a good start for anyone still looking for one! ;-)

I’ve since gone through 5 different delays and am now back at square 1, realising that I never asked what I needed it for! My first Delay was a Boss DD3, very articulate, many years later the T-Rex Reptile 2 which is amazing, then a Carbon Copy which for me has such Character. Dan you were on fire at 57:20 👍. I love my Flashback II, simple to use, 3 presets (editable toneprints), analog dry through, and i use it in stereo. My favourite delays in it are reverse and my two tape presets, one is fairly clean but modulated and second one is the tape age set to the max, ofcourse all in stereo, i guest kinda impossible with non digital hardware. And i won't even start about the mash feature wich is absolutely fantastic..
Went out and bought a mass of new pedals before xmas to set up a new pedal board that does everything I would need for any type of gig. I knew I wanted a drum/tape echo type pedal but was stuck between which type or delay. The best of both types IMO are the BOONAR and the BELLE EPOCH DELUXE so bought them both. Now have them set to a slap back (BOONAR) and a longer delay (B.E.D) and flip flop them as and when needed via a QMX2 running out of my QMX8. Hardest pedal type to buy in my opinion! GUITAR > QMX8 - loop 1 POLYTUNE 3 NOIR + SPARK MINI BOOST - loop 2 RYRA KLONE - loop 3 THE DUELLIST - loop 4 MOJOMOJO - loop 5 JULIA - loop 6 SUPRO TREMOLO - loop7 QMX2 (BOONAR AND BELLE EPOCH DELUXE - loop 8 MINI VENT > out of QMX8 into a POLARA reverb then into a DITTO looper. All powered by Gigrig power supply and E.A. SIS cables. Best set up I have ever had, and all down to Mick + Dan and there use/reviews! Thanks guys, over £3k spent but worth every penny as it makes me want to pick up and play!!!
Great show! You broke down the analysis we all struggle with, and if you played in multiple bands over multiple years (a 40 year vet here) you been thru a number of them. My current delays are an “always on” carbon copy, with a Source Audio nemesis to handle more creative choices.
The DD-200 is a complete homerun for Boss, I've bought it twice: first for my bassboard, when the MXR Echoplex died on me, liked it so much, got a 2nd for my small guitar board. Btw: with the new update, its 127+1 presets instead of the 4+1.
@@PhillipTracey I do. It is on a board with a ehx super switcher controlling the delay presets and tap tempo. I have the tap button set to do the warp thing.
Mick you made a really good point about digital delays "sometimes being hard to play". One solution that addresses the problem if not eliminating it altogether is simply adding a non-digital delay to the digital delay. You can play around with stacking digital into non-digital or vice versa depending on what you like. TPS has done a delay stacking show awhile back (I believe?). Hope that helps those out there struggling with just one digital delay :-)

Thanks for another amazing episode Dan and Mick! TPS is my favorite channel these days. The more I watch you guys, the more I learn and start to understand a bit about all this crazy gear. Thank you for that. I finally joined the tube amp gang and bought a used/like new Super Reverb RI realizing that is the sound I've really been chasing all along. (big SRV fan) I was using a Boss Katana that I think is really cool and versatile but I get total option paralysis with it, especially with the software, and also the Bias Amp software I tried before that. I'm super nerdy with my tech and computers and all, but when it comes to learning this guitar, the less is really more for me I'm realizing. Less knobs, simpler pedals = less thinking and more playing. Thanks for all your wonderful videos and knowledge and inspiration you bring this 44yr old guitar noob. Cheers!
THE DARK REPEATS sounds like a particularly nasty stricture of the bowel....as in "Dan had to burn the bed sheets after the lamb vindaloo brought on an apocalyptic attack of the DARK REPEATS in the night"
A great education again, guys. I think you've helped me decide on the upgrade to my first delay, though it wasn't on your board. I have to be pretty budget conscious, so I think a used Flashback is going to be it. Seems like all the options an at-home player like me needs. Thanks for all the insight of experience, guys. I completely agree with Mick about being turned off if delay by a clean digital delay sound. I am one of this people that just went and bought the Boss DD whatever, and struggled to make it work for me... I usually keep it on the analog setting 😊. I am looking into the new Walrus Audio D1, seems simple yet with a good spectrum of sounds.

Hey guys, picked up my Alter Ego x4 thanks to you. It's a great combo of easy-dial presets with the toneprint slots that certainly satisfy my need to get under the hood. My old Digitech is now also back in the chain in front of my gain stages. Heard that one somewhere recently too... Quick question, what difference does the impedance of the pot make in an expression pedal?
Back to the roots! Delay pedals are a particular addiction for me, and years-ago TPS episodes about them got me watching and thinking, "Damn, these guitar things are cool!"

I thinks it's really great that both of you have different styles and mind sets on what you like with your playing and what sounds you like, and of course you meet in the middle at times to. But it really makes for a great show.
Fantastic show guys! I made the mistake of buying a Boss RE-20 Space Echo pedal based only on the historic reputation of the original unit, only to find that tape delay is really not what I like. It's the modulation in the repeats that I like. Something that colors, but in a beautiful way, like the Memory Man or even something wild like a Strymon pedal. My old Line 6 DL4 has modes with modulation and I loved them, but I never knew why. So this episode helped me a lot in understanding why certain delays sound the way that they do! Thanks so much!
I hear you. I’ve kept my beat up Line 6 EchoPark because of its very natural modulation that just fits in the mix. I then tried the AquaPuss cause of its legendary users and didn’t get it...but loved the Memory Man. My Flashback 2 can feel a little too clean at times, but gotta explore it a bit more before selling it. It’s seems to be one of the most personal effects…’you know you like it/hate it the moment you hear it’.

I would love to see an avantgarde gear challenge, bit crushers, ringmodulators, step-filters, etc. I would find it very interesting to see someone that understands gear on your level, make sense of effects like that.
Good LORD that Collings sounds amazing with the Belle Epoch and ODS! That's not a cheap sound.
Kind of interesting that we like the sound of the imperfections, and those are the result of not having the technology to perfectly repeat the sounds in the early days, even though that almost certainly was the goal at the time.
All (well, a lot of) guitar sound seems to be about that; Valve amplifiers? Distortion and fuzz being staples on a board.
Most of guitar music is at the opposite end of High Fidelity.
EDIT: To clarify, that is a part of the whole thing that I value highly in a world that focusses so much on a verbatim transmission of perceived ideals.
This was a good format. Kudos.
Things I know about delay:
* If tempo is critical to your delay setting in a song, it will never be right during the song at the gig.
* Sometimes Tap tempo doesn’t set the right tempo. Likely user error, but at the gig “things occur.”
* Changes to effect level will have to be made to suit your venue.
* Speaker mic compression at the sound board will change your delay levels in the monitor mix.
* Playing bone dry is harder than having some delay
* Delays give you magic moments. Synergy: sometimes you kick in a delay and the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

In 1986 I had my Digitech PDS-2000 and it was my pride and joy. I also had the DOD FX-55 Distortion and two Arion Japan modulation pedals: the chorus and the phaser. I was full of myself with these, as pedals were not nearly as available as we see today.
It took me a decade to understand why i needed this delay and what i could do with it. Without having it demonstrated or being able to just watch a video on it, i had no idea how many ways delay could be used and how many sounds require it. I have 3 delay's on my board now and have one on all the time. I still own these pedals and still use several of them.
This video, could not have come at a better time. Early in 2019, I made the switch from a multi effects unit to pedals (that's TPS's fault btw). I'm one of the guys Mick spoke about. I figured I'd need a delay and bought a boss DD7. I've barely used it, the repeats are too clean for me. I'm now desperate to try more ambient delays and this vid helped a ton. Thank you chaps, as always, informative, educational and entertaining. All the best.
Boss DD-500 ended my search. So many choices & options with deep-dive editing, tweaking & customization. Learned alot from watching "Countless Hours" of TPS, to get my Delay patches right. Thanks guys.

I've lost count on how many delay related videos you have created, but I never get tired of watching them. The pedal selection has quite changed and expanded from the past videos over the time, also in versatility.
Essentially this communicates to me maybe about the renaissance of delay. Especially the colored, full of character delay. Some years back you got some standard delays like digital and some classic analog ones. Carbon copy came out and stole the show. Now you have room filled with stuff like the actual tape boxes rereleased or reinvented, echoplex simulator, multiple record head simulated, analog with digital controls and modulation, digital delays that model all kinds of delays and do very creative tricks. Flashback being not the least.
I have to consider this in bigger perspective too and see how the pedal industry might be richer than ever (by no means my own idea, I think you've voiced it out loud before too). There are plenty of DIFFERENT options with everything, all kinds of units coming out from classic and legendary to industry standard tools, work horses, to creative and totally utopistic inventions. Such a lovely time to be a guitarist.
And it warms my heart, because now I love delay and would most of the time have delay always on. Despite the fact that the first times I tried delays it was a disgusting mess that sounded nasty and disorienting. Yup, I had the same experience as Mick, digital delay being the only available type on modelling or multi effects units. It has its uses but only now I can think of delay without sneering and I've learned of all the beautiful ways of how it can enrich your tone. Today delay is my instant second choice of pedals after all the things that make distorted noise, from boosters to drives etc. It creates tone and character, not just ear puncturing copy repeats. Great recommendation on the DD 200 as a starting point for delay. I picked one up over the holidays and have loved the versatility it offers. The tape and drum modes are really well done - great if you want to start exploring multi-head delays with all those cool rhythmic repeats. Just enough knobs and options to tailor your sound without needing to constantly refer back to the manual

Sorry guys! Got a bit delayed watching this one... (cue groans)... but... it has given me the chance to read all the comments 1st and it's obvious you guys really have helped many people choose which delay pedal is right for them. This is succinctly noted with quite a few viewers stating - almost with sighs of relief - that the solution to their particular requirement is simply a single MXR Carbon Copy (or similar) and can detect an almost 'light bulb switching on' moment for them.
That is why this channel really exists! Superb job well done!

This is one of your best show imo. I mean, your shows are always entertaining and informative, but this one is so well written and exhaustive it feels necessary. Delay has been my "next gear purchase" for a long time and I find it very difficult to get a clear idea of what I need and what is best for my guitar playing. Sometimes it's pleasant to see a content that covers the basics in context in a way most of us will find it useful. The same way the show about "the right overdrive" had me finally achieving this endless quest and realize all I needed was a Boss BD-2.
One good compromise is to get a TC Flashback Mini to go along with a core delay. For $60 used it will give you access to the whole TC library, which is awesome. To me the 2200 is the best sounding digital delay ever, and there is tons more in a little pedal. When I just want another flavor for one song it’s perfect.

I started out only wanting digital delay, and over time I've gradually become much more interested in analog and tape style sounds.
This Show in particular has shown me what those sounds can *really* do and how to make the most of them, in a way that I never discovered in my formative guitar years.

As you might guess, the Catalinbread Echorec is my fav delay pedal ever. It is pure magic. As you guys discuss, what really makes this and a few other pedals shine is the preamp. It's not just about the sound of the repeats, or the functions and modes- it's those special pedals- like my old memory man- that when you step on it your sound changes- it gets bigger, fatter- more energetic- what have you. Many companies - like strymon, TC, Eventide etc- make great sounding digital modeling delays- but only a few companies integrate a preamp into their pedals- and it's this preamp that gives a few pedals that special something- where you step on it and it's more than just "repeats". Catalinbread have been doing this for years with the Echorec and the incredible Belle epoch (old ones and the new deluxe line)- killer stuff. Anyway- a fun follow up to this could explore more esoteric delays and or esoteric sounds. My favorite part of this video was the weird pitch warping you guys did with the new JAM pedal. A deeper dive into that sort of territory would be really fun! Thanks guys- great show!

One good, dedicated analog delay like a Maxon AD-9 pro, DM-2, etc
One fairly comprehensive digital delay, or a simple but high-end digital delay (eg Source Audio Nemesis/T-Rex Replica, respectively)
Two. You always need two. It's like the Sith.

Wow, my story is EXACTLY the same as Mick's. I bought a Boss DD3 years and years ago. Because guitarists are supposed to have a delay pedal, right? I absolutely HATED it! An exact facsimile of what I'd just played coming back at me. NO, just NO! It went straight on eBay.
Fast forward a good few years; That Pedal Show comes into my life. I again decide to dip my toe into the world of delay. But this time I'm a little more cautious, I buy the Mooer Ana for £50.....
I now own the Strymon Brigadier and I absolutely love it. It's beautiful textural repeats that never get in the way, wonderful!

Really interesting to read interviews with the Edge when he moved from the Memory Man (Boy, October & War) to the Korg SDD-3000 digital delay (Unforgettable Fire) and how he had to change his playing style. Compare 'I Will Follow' to 'Bad' to hear the difference.
I wholeheartedly prefer the overall tones and songs of earlier U2, and I think a lot of that has to do with the quirks of the Memory Man, especially since it was more or less the only pedal they had (outside of a drive, which doesn't really count).

Dan briefly stroking the tape delay like a cherished family pet was a moment in this week's vid I could really relate to.
The Collings sounds great with the shanks OD, really clear and focused sound.
It's important to understand the two ways to alter the delay time. You can alter the number of steps before you play it back (akin to moving the head on the EP3, and what most digital devices do) or you can alter the sample rate (akin to changing the tape motor speed on the EP3, and what bucket brigade devices do). The former only affects playback, the latter also affects recording speed. No one other than me cares about this, but it makes a difference. Seriously.
I had always dialed a "dotted 8th" slightly modulated, then just adjusted the amount of mix depending on the need for always on or loud and rhythmic. Followed by a small amount of amp reverb. 20 years that was great. Since this show and Pedal companies going nuts, I have upgraded to Source Audio delay/reverb and working with a few preset sounds for application. I love my old BBD but times have changed and there is more than ever at our finger tips now, and we can still keep it simple sir!

TC Electronic Flashback 2 introduced me to a wider range of delays. Now I have a Strymon Volante and it’s nuts!
I can’t remember if it was this episode or the reverb one, but Dan showed a stereo hack if you have only 1 amp...wiring it back on itself. Well, I just did that with my digitech obscura delay into my polara reverb and then wired it back to the delay again. HOLY shit guys. Absolutely amazing!
Hey guys, long time viewer, first comment. Maybe my first youtube comment ever? Anyway, I loved Dan's 'history of the delay pedal' and the grand canyon example, because it sparked a memory I had of a very old illustration. It depicts a device that consists of series of four walls spaced at very specific distances, so that when one shouted 'Amore!' from one point, an echo off of the walls would yield 'Amore! More! Ore! Re!' which translates to (roughly) 'Love! Behavior! Words! Action!' in latin, which is just a beautiful thing linguistically, honestly. This device was conceived of by a 1600s jesuit polymath, Athanasius Kircher (written and illustrated in Musurgia Universalis) and the idea came about around the first time we (humans) were rationalizing and scientifically interrogating the physical phenomenon of the echo. I just wanted to share this because Dan's little quip on experiencing the actual physical phenomenon of the echo and translating that into a device has a long and rich history that is endlessly interesting. Cheers guys! please keep up the great and amazing work.

A timely video for me, with echoes of Mick's comments on not 'getting' delay and option paralysis. I've been working through the different types on a Line6 M5 struggling to get many of them to sit right, and this video has helped get things into focus and I have just picked up a secondhand Foxgear Echosex Baby. Thanks.
On the topic of slapback delay in country and rockabilly: I picked up my best tips for slapback delay from a video of Danny Gatton, who used a Boss DD-2, one repeat, delay set roughly equal in volume to the guitar’s original signal. It’s almost obnoxious by itself, but it really works much better for slapback to use a bright, clear, loud delay in a band context.
I think the tc flashback 2 should had been displayed here since it can do many things (like stereo ping pong, reverse, etc) and its fairly simple yo use and affordable. Another one is the eqd avalanche run
I've had the original Flashback x4, and I keep coming back to it, because it's so easy to use live. I might trade for a new one, and I say that having owned a Timeline.

The digtail aspects have nothing to do with its extra long delay time though. it just has more BBD chips to extend the time.

After watching your episode with Devin Townsend I knew I needed the ocean machine. I love all the crazy sounds it can do that other delays can't. Picking the right delay is just as critical as the right drive pedal.
I got a Way Huge Supa Puss about this time last year for something primarily analog with modulation that could also be very tonally sculpt-able and include tap tempo and subdivisions. I have been loving it since! I dont use it too very often but when I hear delay on an idea in my head its my go to! It will probably live on my board for a very long time!
A friend of mine nicknamed me 'the man with more delays than a privatised bus company' more than 25 years ago.
I still own quite a few of 'em. :-P Most of them analog.
I personally love the 'analog' sound, with the usual decay, but my EHX Canyon performs great as well (awesome number of options), and the small form factor does a lot of good as well. Basically I use but 1 setting, tape delay. That's quite enough for me.
This 'narrowing down' of options and possibilities is a good start for anyone still looking for one! ;-)

I love my Flashback II, simple to use, 3 presets (editable toneprints),
analog dry through, and i use it in stereo. My favourite delays in it are
reverse and my two tape presets, one is fairly clean but modulated and second one
is the tape age set to the max, ofcourse all in stereo, i guest kinda impossible
with non digital hardware.
And i won't even start about the mash feature wich is absolutely fantastic..
Went out and bought a mass of new pedals before xmas to set up a new pedal board that does everything I would need for any type of gig. I knew I wanted a drum/tape echo type pedal but was stuck between which type or delay. The best of both types IMO are the BOONAR and the BELLE EPOCH DELUXE so bought them both. Now have them set to a slap back (BOONAR) and a longer delay (B.E.D) and flip flop them as and when needed via a QMX2 running out of my QMX8. Hardest pedal type to buy in my opinion!
GUITAR > QMX8 - loop 1 POLYTUNE 3 NOIR + SPARK MINI BOOST - loop 2 RYRA KLONE - loop 3 THE DUELLIST - loop 4 MOJOMOJO - loop 5 JULIA - loop 6 SUPRO TREMOLO - loop7 QMX2 (BOONAR AND BELLE EPOCH DELUXE - loop 8 MINI VENT > out of QMX8 into a POLARA reverb then into a DITTO looper. Great show! You broke down the analysis we all struggle with, and if you played in multiple bands over multiple years (a 40 year vet here) you been thru a number of them. My current delays are an “always on” carbon copy, with a Source Audio nemesis to handle more creative choices.

The DD-200 is a complete homerun for Boss, I've bought it twice: first for my bassboard, when the MXR Echoplex died on me, liked it so much, got a 2nd for my small guitar board.
Btw: with the new update, its 127+1 presets instead of the 4+1.
Even before the update, it check all my boxes. Now with the update to 127 presets, it's all I could ever ask for.
Do you use the Midi on your DD-200?
@@PhillipTracey I do. It is on a board with a ehx super switcher controlling the delay presets and tap tempo. I have the tap button set to do the warp thing.

I use a really short delay on my “dry” amp to give a feel of separation between the amps, which would usually be right beside each other.
I lol’d when mick said “but you have a much longer history of delays” and they didn’t even giggle.
Mick you made a really good point about digital delays "sometimes being hard to play". One solution that addresses the problem if not eliminating it altogether is simply adding a non-digital delay to the digital delay. You can play around with stacking digital into non-digital or vice versa depending on what you like. TPS has done a delay stacking show awhile back (I believe?). Hope that helps those out there struggling with just one digital delay :-)

Thanks for another amazing episode Dan and Mick! TPS is my favorite channel these days. The more I watch you guys, the more I learn and start to understand a bit about all this crazy gear. Thank you for that. I finally joined the tube amp gang and bought a used/like new Super Reverb RI realizing that is the sound I've really been chasing all along. (big SRV fan) I was using a Boss Katana that I think is really cool and versatile but I get total option paralysis with it, especially with the software, and also the Bias Amp software I tried before that. I'm super nerdy with my tech and computers and all, but when it comes to learning this guitar, the less is really more for me I'm realizing. Less knobs, simpler pedals = less thinking and more playing. Thanks for all your wonderful videos and knowledge and inspiration you bring this 44yr old guitar noob. Cheers!
THE DARK REPEATS sounds like a particularly nasty stricture of the bowel....as in "Dan had to burn the bed sheets after the lamb vindaloo brought on an apocalyptic attack of the DARK REPEATS in the night"

I completely agree with Mick about being turned off if delay by a clean digital delay sound. I am one of this people that just went and bought the Boss DD whatever, and struggled to make it work for me... I usually keep it on the analog setting 😊. I am looking into the new Walrus Audio D1, seems simple yet with a good spectrum of sounds.

My old Digitech is now also back in the chain in front of my gain stages. Heard that one somewhere recently too... Quick question, what difference does the impedance of the pot make in an expression pedal?
Back to the roots! Delay pedals are a particular addiction for me, and years-ago TPS episodes about them got me watching and thinking, "Damn, these guitar things are cool!"

I've got or have owned delays by Boss, Strymon, Wampler, Catalinbread, TC... my board only has a Carbon Copy on it. Just works for me.

The best delay pedal is the one that looks the best on your board. I chose the Digitech Obscura because I severely needed a yellow pedal
I thinks it's really great that both of you have different styles and mind sets on what you like with your playing and what sounds you like, and of course you meet in the middle at times to. But it really makes for a great show.

Fantastic show guys! I made the mistake of buying a Boss RE-20 Space Echo pedal based only on the historic reputation of the original unit, only to find that tape delay is really not what I like. It's the modulation in the repeats that I like. Something that colors, but in a beautiful way, like the Memory Man or even something wild like a Strymon pedal. My old Line 6 DL4 has modes with modulation and I loved them, but I never knew why. So this episode helped me a lot in understanding why certain delays sound the way that they do! Thanks so much!
I hear you. I’ve kept my beat up Line 6 EchoPark because of its very natural modulation that just fits in the mix. I then tried the AquaPuss cause of its legendary users and didn’t get it...but loved the Memory Man.
My Flashback 2 can feel a little too clean at times, but gotta explore it a bit more before selling it.
It’s seems to be one of the most personal effects…’you know you like it/hate it the moment you hear it’.
