If I had a youngster now I would give them music lessons, instrument of their choice or vocal training. It is such a healthy hobby, for some a career. Nonetheless,if they were to never make a career of it,the more one knows about music, the more one appreciates it.
Karen’s voice was so warm and smooth and she knew how to be expressive with it. It was a shock to hear she had died at only 32 years old in 1983.

Watch the video by John Cooksey from 5 yrs ago. 2 minute of woman singing a Karen Carpenter song "I know I need to be in Love" and showing babies reaction. I don't know what is more beautiful, the song (and her voice sounding similar to Karen's) or the cute baby.

I grew up in the 70s a die hard Led Zeppelin fan. Unfortunately, for some reason, back in those days a "real" Zeppelin fan wasn't even supposed to acknowledge the angelic voice of Karen Carpenter. I always did. Wasn't allowed to admit it to my fellow Zeppelin freaks though. She was the most beautiful voice I ever heard, sadly she flew "under the radar" in the 70s. She's flying around in heaven now singing to her creator. He's lucky.

When I think back to when I was growing up in the sixties and seventies I realise how lucky I was to hear all the great singers that were around at that time. Real talent that I took for granted at the time.
It is only since I have listened to the reaction videos on you tube from people like yourself that I can fully appreciate what I had. It makes me wonder what went wrong, what changed, that there is no (or very little) real music around anymore.
It makes me sad for the younger generation that are growing up without knowing what real voices, real singers, sound like and what real music is.

Sanni Epstein This is EXACTLY why I got into Kpop. I am 50 and love the melodic songs of the 70s and 80s. I’ve been so over the modern pop music. No instrumental/compositional sophistication, mostly the same three notes sung over and over, and lots of repetition of one or two lines. Maybe throw a few girls twerking in the back and BAM. You’ve got yourself a modern-day MV.
When I discovered Kpop in late 2011, I was delighted to find poetic lyrical content and melodies I could hum and whistle to when they weren’t using English. (I’ve since learned some Korean vocabulary so I can join in more.) My favorite group is BTS, but I enjoy many, many groups and soloists. There are some really unique voices there.

I’m so delighted to see your reaction to Karen Carpenters voice. I’m 55... as a little girl I listened to The Carpenters on the radio in the kitchen as my Mom cooked dinner. That was 45 years ago... that her voice continues to impact young individuals hearing hear for the first time is quite remarkable. The Carpenters were considered “square” and squeaky clean when I was a teenager. I absolutely LOVE that in 2021 young music enthusiasts APPRECIATE her unmatched vocals and the arrangements that Richard Carpenter put together. Thank you for your reaction 🙏🏼♥️

The Carpenters were among my favorite groups back when they were coming up and throughout their short time. No other female had the sheer vocal range Karen did and her tonal quality was absolutely pure. Still kills me inside the way she died and I'll never forget the day her death was announced in the news. So little was known about anorexia at that time. Karen was the best there ever was.

My daughter came to me when she was about 5 or 6 years old, sat on my lap, and told me she was feeling sad. I asked her why, but, just like in this song, "Nothing was really wrong".
I told her sometimes listening to a sad song can cheer you up, because it helps you let out your emotions. I suggested she listen to *"Rainy Days and Mondays",* because it described exactly what she was feeling.
After she listened to it, I could hear her in her room singing it over and over. It cheered her up, indeed, and she was beaming shortly after that. I also felt good that she came to me, "the one who loved her", when she was sad, just like in the song.
This also reminds me of another song you might want to react to: *"Song, Sung Blue",* written and sung by *Neil Diamond.*
It includes a line about sad songs sometimes helping to cheer you up.

@@SPAMDAGGER22 Karen and her touring drummer Cubby O'Brien once went to see a Buddy Rich concert together. O'Brien knew Buddy so they went backstage and he introduced her. Buddy said "Karen Carpenter, do you know that you're one of my favorite drummers?". Buddy Rich seldom complimented ANYBODY.
There's also the story, as told by their bassist Joe Osborn, of how they recorded "Yesterday Once More". Richard Carpenter didn't like the first half of the song so the band assumed they would have to rerecord the whole thing. Richard said they could just do the first half and splice the tapes together. This was a generation before Pro Tools and click tracks existed so Osborn didn't believe they could play it again consistently enough to match. Richard insisted, they recut the first half and put the two tapes together. The tempo was perfect and meshed seamlessly.

Well (IMHO), you are as close to hearing vocal perfection as humanly possible. Karen is always fantastic, but those 2 words 'always gets' are beyond gorgeous. You're hearing true greatness. You had to have more than just being a 20 year old fluff of cotton candy. The musicianship was definitely at a much higher bar, and you could be older too. I see today that it takes 8-10 people to write a 2 sentence song. Crazy!! A lot of these folks wouldn't have made it through the front door of a recording studio. Hopefully the tide will turn and Real Music will be demanded once again!! Make sure you're showing you kids. They have a chance of retrieving the torch and to bring back good music.
