Karen Carpenter always considered herself as a drummer that also sang rather than a singer who can also play the drums. In 1975, she won a Playboy magazine survey as best rock drummer of the year - not best female drummer, just best drummer period. It was extremely unusual to find female drummers back in the 70's, let alone female drummers who were also lead singers; still rare today 50 years later. You can't go wrong with the Carpenters - Close to You, We've Only Just Begun, Superstar, Hurting Each Other, Yesterday Once More were all top 5 hits in the US. If you want one that is a little more upbeat, try their cover of Please Mr. Postman which peaked at #1 in the US in 1974.
Chills every time I hear her voice. Sheer perfection. And never missing a beat with her singing or on the drums. There will never be another like her. The generations from 1983 forward missed on a once in forever voice. I feel bad for them but they and we can still listen to her perfect voice over and over again. Chills.
Interesting. I had always considered her to be a contralto, or possibly, a mezzo-soprano, not being that much of an expert on such things. Thanks for the clarification.
I love seeing people react to seeing her on the drums..it's like when Stevie Ray Vaughan flips his guitar around haha, these 2 artists blow minds probably like no others on here, two phenoms
OH MY! karen voice one in a million its rare , that is why no one can duplicate or sounds closer her voice , even at this point of time were still heard their songs....YOU MAY REST IN PEACE "KAREN" 😢😢😢
Karen Carpenter was a famous drummer, keyboard player and session musician years before she was a vocalist. She could play any instrument you put in front of her. Her voice was probably the finest dynamic female vocalists of the 20th Century, bar none..
Karen had one of the most beautiful voices ever. She knew how to bring out the right emotions and feelings for each song. She should always be treasured. But I also want to give compliments to Richard, he knew how to write and arrange songs that fit Her voice which was so unique. He's like a Bacharach-Dionne, Babyface-Toni B or Michael Powell-Anita. Let's give him his props, which will take nothing away from the love we have for Karen I read a quote online "I wish Karen loved herself as much as we loved her".
They had to pressure her to move off the drum kit. They wanted her up front but she resisted it, wanting to stay behind the drums. I think that's when a lot of her problems started. She felt safe behind those drums.
I met Karen when I was 11 as I sang back-up to her at a concert on one of her songs. She was so nice to me and made me feel so comfortable. Such a wonderful person. I loved her, and not in a romantic way as a kid. I cried when she passed away.
Thank you for your reaction to this beautiful Carpenters song! You are right that Karen was a phenomenal talent, unfortunately taken from us far too soon. What a gift that we still have the legacy of her music to listen to. For another great female vocalist performance you could consider reacting to "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor. Best of luck to you with your channel!
I came here because of her, and you understand, you're also amanzing! I'm glad to always confirm that art overcomes barriers you are beautiful! From Brazil!
Not many reactions TH-camrs choose vids with Karen on the drums. Great to see her on drums where she was happiest. She looks well here before her Anorexia took hold. Another clip here... th-cam.com/video/5kPD4LtA1vo/w-d-xo.html
What you were listening to was the official recording of the song that played on the radio. What you were watching was a visual cover to go onto a music video for the song. Yes, she played the drums, both in the video and in the recording of the song. But she didn't do both at the same time. She did for live performances, but that isn't what this was. You can't play the drums and sing so smoothly as she does in this recording. They were done separately, first the song in the late 60s, then the video for the 80s when music videos started being the big thing .
Hi Amaka, I’m so glad you found Karen Carpenter to listen too and you obviously enjoyed her, she would have to be the best female singer of all time, she was just amazing and sang so effortlessly. I wanted to ask you if you don’t mind what country you are from? My name is Donnamaree and I’m from Melbourne Australia.
There is a great video of Karen Carpenter playing all sorts of different drums. If you would like to react to it, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/ie1WWWOxhMs/w-d-xo.html
Okay beautiful lady check it out, Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female vocalist of all times, beautiful amazing voice no auto-tune no back woods tricks just straight up talent. Check out their hit song from 1970 that pretty much started it all for the Carpenters. Check out the song CLOSE TO YOU, find a video on TH-cam that lasts at least up to 3:41, enjoy, th-cam.com/video/woKKnEn8h9w/w-d-xo.html
Compare and contrast today’s pop-music scene, where reciters of obscene poetry known as “hip-hop artists” (who can neither SING or PLAY INSTRUMENTS) are known as “musicians?” What a joke folks!
Ron, nostalgia is a dangerous drug and we live in a completely different world now.... trust me there is loads of amazing talent out there you just have to open you eyes.
@@onechopbuddy3849 Buddy, do me a favor and check out the blockbuster song of the year, WAP (with lyrics). Realizing this song is not only wildly successful but mainstream now, tell me again the dangers of my “nostalgia?”
I’m just curious, why are almost all carpenters reaction videos done by black people? Not trying to be rude, but I can help but notice that the vast majority of reaction videos are disproportionately African American. Why is that?
Best female voice ever.
Without a doubt ♥️♥️♥️
Died way too young, miss her but her music lives on
Your listening to the greatest female vocalist ever !!! EVER ! No voice over no auto tune no lip syncing !! Pure silk voice and absolutely effortless
👍 Karen was a very talented drummer and had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
A poet. A voice…wonderful.

It was reputed that Jon Bonham was pissed that Karen won that poll. She beat out the likes of Jon, and Ringo Star, etc.

I believe Paul McCartney said she was the best female singer he had ever heard
i guess it is pretty randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Jayden Darwin I watch on flixzone. You can find it by googling :)

@Lian Abram thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it!
@Jayden Darwin no problem xD
That voice. A magnificent instrument.
Definitely the best female alto voice ever.
Interesting. I had always considered her to be a contralto, or possibly, a mezzo-soprano, not being that much of an expert on such things. Thanks for the clarification.
She was a contralto with a 3 octave range
Funny how it seems that we just Love this little drummer girl ...R.I.P. Karen Carpenter
The drums were HER comfort zone
She was one of the best drummer of her time. Girl power at it's best.

Yes she was one of the best drummers ever❤️
Wow😲😊
She considered herself a drummer who could also sing
She possessed a million dollar voice., and you possess a million dollar smile :)
Awww 🥰 Thank you 😊
Yes hear voice is so beautiful
She fought an eating disorder for years. She eventually succumbed to it, so the world was robbed of a beautiful person with an angelic voice.
Such a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice may her soul RIP ❤️
Greatest singer God has ever or will ever create! Still miss her!!
"What I've got they used to call the blues" Best line
Her amazing voice. Gone far to soon. I feel happy and sad at same time.

Karen was so talented and beautiful. Try her singing "little altar boy". She will amaze you again. Good reaction.

I agree .. she felt safe behind the drums in a time where the Twiggys ruled the fashion world.
I'm almost in tears thinking the same thing and I find it impressive and unique that she was doing both!
She considered herself a drummer first and singer second. Try "For All We Know" by The Carpenters. Beautiful song.
Most beautiful voice ever
Damn I'm balling. Listen to her albums way back
Love her
Karen Carpenter, Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy 🎤🎶💓💓💓
Better than amazing; Ms. Karen's voice is Pure and as smooth as budder.. ♠W.G.
She plays the drums at a high level !!
She didn't want to sing can you belive that ! What a voice !
I’m sure Karen feels your joy! Awesome, thanks.

Amo os Carpenters
Wow... Nice one dearie!!!
Thank you 😊
One of the great voices of her era, lost far too early at age 32 of complications from anorexia nervosa. An American musical tragedy...
Goat
Not the biggest voice but THE BEST SINGER EVER!
She was known as the best drummer ever before she was forced to give them up and sing. There is a solo drumming video of her that is insane.
In my opinion two of the best voices ever heard were Elvis Presley and Karen Carpenter, would have been great to hear them collaborate together
so ture...it would have been amazing

Listen to For All We Know 1991 remix
As a rocker I've never understood why the soundtrack to my preteen childhood is the Carpenters. Perhaps because Karen was so good. Must be.
My favorite song of theirs. She preferred playing drums but, as they got more popular, their managers insisted that she be out front.

Karen had a voice of absolute gold but was obviously tortured by something. You just want to hug her!

yes oh
HEY SISTER ❤
Can you imagine getting a call from Karen or Richard Carpinter asking you to play hormonica or sax with them.
There is a video on TH-cam of Karen doing a drum solo!
The drums is all what Karen wanted to play. She told Richard to find a vocalist.
She was a drummer years before she started singing ..
Wow🥰
