    HAPPY DECEMBER 12TH EVERYONE!!! Instead of participating in Vlogmas this year, i'll be dedicating all my December uploads to THRIFTMAS! I'll be posting daily vlogs in the lead up to Christmas, and i'll only be posting about THRIFT SHOPPING!!! Videos like.... Thrift flip, thrift haul, thrift with me, thrift makeover, thrift store challenge, Christmas thrift, anything and everything I can think of to get into the holiday spirit while keeping costs low and keeping my consumption sustainable!
    In todays episode I visit Mitchell Street Antiques, the BIGGEST antique store in Sydney! I can't begin to explain how incredible this store was - i've never seen such a large selection of vintage, antique, unique and amazing items before!! Which item was your favourite? Do you think I should go back and buy anything that I didn't buy the first time?

      Yea and just because some might have come from q thrift store alot of that stuff comes from estate sales or private collections so it's not as simple I think its fine to shop at antique malls
      Honestly resale also isn't as bad as it seems I know alot of people who do it because they are kinda poor and can see value in things
      The thing is its hard to say about ethics because you also have the point about the fact is most poor people thrifting arnt buying vintage they are buying cloths to look like they bought it from a store not a thrift store
      And then also you have this whole thing that actually we have enough 2nd hand for those people to be fine and supply to be fine because if something doesn't sell at thrift they throw it out and thats just as much waste
      The ethics thing is extremely nuanced
      Plus the biggest thing alot of these charity shops are taking your money from buying things and they are turning around and using that for meals and other things that help the community more
      I mean I have even heard of them donating new shoes and new cloths to poor people because like I said it's you don't want to be singled out for being poor no one who's poor wants to look like the shopped at a thrift store
      Umm that's the thing idk I had a hard childhood for a few years because my dad lost his job and we shopped at thrift and Ross if we where being fancy and then as a child my whole goal was to find things that looked like I didn't shop at those kinda stores
      So there's idk its a hard choice I get both sides of the argument but I personally don't see a issue with reselling but I also can understand why some people don't support that

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      💐Yes, we have similar shops in the US. Wonderful places to browse, sometimes like mini-museums with all their historical items for sale, but not necessarily where you'll find bargains.
      😉 Please don't hate resellers. Everybody deserves to make a living. These ppl scour estate sales, yard sales, flea markets, online sources, and thrift stores. They do a lot of labor searching for items to resell (or flip). They seek merchandise that fits their specific aesthetic.
      🤔Sometimes their clever efforts & passion for something old (like these Thriftmas vlogs📲) actually inspires ppl to appreciate the beauty & craftsmanship of both antiques and vintage goods too. 🎉Yay!🎉
      Think of it as a hierarchy of retailers. A lot of room for multiple different layers of resellers. Some that will sell online (say ebay, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, Amazon), at a flea market, in a consignment booth, in their own store, etc.
      It makes sense that their💲mark-up💲reflects a bit of their labor (sourcing/cleaning/prepping/repairing/etc.). It also can account for their time & expense building an appealing retail space/presence, inclu. how well they display or present those items for resale.
      There is also 💲overhead💲 to consider. Some pay for staff and store rent. The more attractive the shop, the higher quality of merchandise, the more professional and knowledgeable the employees, the more trendy the location -- all these factors will typically result in higher retail prices.
      🤓Frankly, some ppl don't have the interest or energy hunting (&/or flipping) finds where wholesale priced merchandise can be found. They prefer a quick "in & out" -- no fuss or haggling.
      😔Some ppl get overwhelmed & discouraged in the hunt.
      😝Some ppl hate thrifting where they may face clutter or disarray.
      😒Some may even despise associating with the "lower orders" (on the economic hierarchy).
      In essence, they deserve to pay top dollar. 💰They usually can afford to spend more too. Ultimately, these sort of shoppers should be applauded for helping the larger economy too👏. Their 💸dollars will reinvest back in the community too.
      😁So, most all types of sellers/buyers/shoppers should be valued. Each in their own way, they ultimately keep the greater retail chain moving on.
      🔸️Final words🔸️
      ♻️Updating, flipping &/or repurposing tired or hopelesssly out-dated clothing, decor & furniture headed for some garbage🗑 heap should be greatly valued👍.
      Done properly with an
      🖌artists eye👀 toward possibilities/trends & 🛠craftman level skills this process can be a true art form🎨. 🛃Beware of the horrible hackers🕵️‍♀️ who do shoddy work though.
      🌎Plus, it is better for our planet to ☆ recycle ☆ reuse and
      ☆ repurpose goods that already exist instead of using natural🌲resources to create something brand new. Or worse, destroying items that at a minimum can be re-engineered simply bcos you're lazy, selfish, or lack ingenuity.
      It is appallingly wanton to trash🗑 something that has gone out of style or simply doesn't suit your taste. ☎️If you can't be bothered to drop off, call around to find a charity shop willing to pick up ⛟.📸At a minimum put curbside or post online "free" w/a photo online under Craigslist, FB Market, etc. Unless true trash, most things will be snapped up quick.
      ~~~~~~~~~~
      🤗Kindness goes a long way. When searching for a deal, plz be respectful of the seller and courteous with any request for their "lowest & best price." If the reseller is willing to wheel-deal, show your appreciation and some humor even when that reduced price seems too high.
      If you graciously say thx as well as express regret or some true commiseration, you might see more movement in your direction. Words spoken with sincerity (& maybe some theatrics) like: "Aww. It's a great item, but still too steep for my budget." Don't be surprised if they offer an even lower price. If they don't, respect their boundaries.
      🖤If you really love the item, but feel it's over priced or can't afford it. Jot down the item of interest on the back of your calling card with the proviso that they "please think of you should things change in the future." They might not ever shift on price, but if they liked you and your handling of the situation, they could still contact you down the road. They might acquire something similar at a lower price point with you in mind.
      🦈I've encountered ruthless sharks smelling blood in the water-- and some shockingly rude & almost contemptuous folks-- who in essence wish to exploit the vulnerability in seller.
      😈Think there is a special place in ♨️purgatory♨️ for those who prey on the weakness of others. Sometimes they show absolutely zero honor or knowledge about the provenance, history, craftsmanship, material, or initial investment in an item.
      👩‍🏫Somethings rightly carry a higher price tag based on those factors. If you don't quite understand, ask the seller their reasoning. Perhaps you might learn something valuable.
      🛋I've done a lot of down-sizing for myself and others in my day. I've haggled with charming & persistent ppl, like these students originally from Burma. In the end, it was almost a pleasure to sell a 🚲bike to those cheeky kids at a lower price point.
      😞Lastly, forgive me for jumping on my soapbox. In the end, I would rather give away something treasured or expensive for FREE (or at a heavily reduced price) to someone pleasant or in need. Someone you know who will actually 💕love💕 or faithfully use something that may even have a great legacy or cost.
      😛Will do EVERYTHING in my power to avoid selling cheaply to an insulting or overly aggressive bargain hunter or evil reseller. 🦋☮💛🌼
You would take your stuff to the counter and they'd be like 10 cents...20 cents...50 cents would have to be something really fancy!! You'd leave with 2 bags full of stuff for $2. I miss those days 😭 i loved barbie dolls at the time and we'd find ones from the 60's and 70's and pay next to nothing. Now thrift stores sell new Barbie dolls with wrecked hair for at least $7.
    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9
      @@thequirkysquirrel5449 🤗 I respectfully disagree. Thrift stores can be quite greedy & gouging.
      Personally, I refuse to pay 💸top dollar boutique prices at some low level grim, crowded, corporately run "non-profit" thrift store that rakes in BIG cash that does not trickle down to most levels of staff. Where the CEO & top execs are frequently living high off hog. Worse, when they don't hire enough staff to adequately run a place or pay the ones they do a substandard wage.
      Two reasons, I might be more inclined to pay a much 💲bigger💲 piece of the retail pie for gently used goods:
      (1) If the second-hand shop more closely resembles a true retail establishment that offers a more pleasing environment & shopping experience. Or,
      (2) If it a true charitable second-hand shop (vs a big generic chain) that supports a cause I believe in (cancer research, missions outreach for homeless, etc.). These places are usually run by higher quality retired volunteers. The shop itself typically looks more boutique like in their style and presentation of goods too.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~
      🤑Not against ppl making money, but let's be reasonable. There are a whole list of reasons why high-end retail stores, esp. ones located in some swanky area, can sell their merchandise at maximum rates💰.
      😉Let's not forget, those fancy boutique and retail chain stores are also selling you a whole pleasant experience. They are also marketing a specific lifestyle in the process too. These are places where all their goods are arranged most attractively. That is clean, inviting, and smartly decorated. (Not looking like some prison commissary.) They will have sale clerks that are more likely to be trained in a higher caliber of customer service and be well styled too.
      😝If a customer has to slum, the prices should be reduced⬇️ to reflect that fact. Overall, I understand:
      ▪Inflation and how the cost of business has skyrocketed⬆️.
      ▪What clothing, decor & furniture is generally worth.
      ▪Fully support when second-hand shops dedicate a small area or special locations toward higher-end donated decor & designer duds.
      😲However, I am utterly appalled by the outrageousness of some thrift store's newer pricing strategies that aggressively price all their entire merchandise.
      😝Not a fan of Fast Fashions, but I often would rather wait to pay seriously reduced clearance prices for brand NEW merchandise sold in regular retail stores. Instead of shopping a thrift store with ridiculous prices for seriously out-dated stock.
      Non-profits can be just as ruthless as companies run strictly for profit. Profits are fine when they share that wealth appropriately with all their workers. It's pretty despicable when they also exploit them or use some sort of favoritism/nepotism/racism/sexism when it comes to determining staff salaries. Where the money goes to greedy stockholders or CEOs who earn 500x more than their average worker.
      Corporate Compensation Divisions go to extreme measures to analyze every single position on their books. They do extensive market research in hopes to offer competitive wages for each and every job category. And, yet they will still 🕵️‍♂️rob "Petra to pay Paul."
      👩‍💼You want true equal pay for all citizens!? Unless & until companies are forced to be fully transparent about wages & perks, there will companies who will continue to cheat ppl with their exploitive employment practices.
      🌎Sustainability & recycling♻️ is an important factor in choosing thrift stores, but that won't matter if they price their merchandise to point where even low income folks cannot afford their prices.
      The big US thrifts have traditionally been more concerned about volume of sales. If they wanna ramp up profits, they need to pay closer attention to these other details. ✌😉🤙

      I mean... antique stores can just materialize the items. They have to get them from somewhere. They go to thrift stores, yard sales, estate sales, auctions, etc. to source their items. It takes a lot of time to find things, clean them up, and present them for resale. The thrift stores are open to anyone and there is more than enough to go around. Antique stores and vintage malls are good for people who don't want to spend the time hunting down something in a thrift store - they may never even find it. So much ends up in landfills. We should all support second hand.

    • @ci8516

    Well the market for antiques shift in value by the years and it justify pieces at higher prices. Like a rare collectable set/item or an item that has been sort after over time. It can take a lot of knowledge in the field to know what an item is worth its value. Keep in mind these can be people's income. Either full time or part time. They also may have spent more for some of their other items and are marketing it up for their time finding and purchasing it. Also most of the time they find an item that they truly love but know others will love it more or just as much. I like to support stuff like this, as I can see the time and effort they put into gain an item, to then sale on later. I can see where your worries might stem from but if you take time to look into or experience it first hand. You may see the charm and lose that type of job/ hobby brings 😃

      You do realise you can drive for 10 to 15 hours and still be in the same state here in australia right? Australia is about the same size as the U.S but with only 7 states.

      It's the same in Australia..we are an island so it's impossible to drive to another country!
      I've always wanted to go to Europe. It's amazing how you can experience so many different cultures (espec food!) by travelling such a short distance.

      May be but for Europe it's 1h by plan and not car to be in an other country. I mean I live one the cost line Paris like 5h away but an other country. Make it 12h drive by car.

      If I drive 1 hour from where I live (Belgium) I'd be in The Netherlands. If I drive fast I might end up in Luxembourg or Germany. Two hours would get me to France.
      And yes, I could go to Paris and back in 1 day, though it's a couple of hours by car.

    I like how you adressed the issue of pickers and resellers. In the area im in ( around amsterdam) its also a very big problem. The pickers even go through the thrift-store donations before goes into the shop. So there is no chance anymore of beating them to it. Makes the chance of finding something cool alot smaller.
