      Who said Aang wasn't good father? I'm sure he wasn't a perfect one, but he obviously wasn't a a monster either, as all his kids turned out to be good people. But even the closest families have a lot of sibling drama BS. It's just the nature of brothers and sisters.

      Aang according to his kids made it a priority to nurture Tenzin as much as possible. Tenzin doesn t even remember that his siblings weren't there for the field trips he was taken on. I don't know if him having a monk upbringing really explains that away.

    There’s a theory that went around that bumi had a great relationship with Sokka. It’s believed that both Katara & Aang focused more on the kids that bent there elements. Thus leaving bumi out. The theory is that Sokka noticed Aang & Katara ignoring bumi & called them out on it. Then he took Bumi under his wing & became like a son to him. And that bumi joined the military in honor of his uncle Sokka.

      In the comics (Rise of Kyoshi, I think..), one of Toph's ancestors Lu Beifong is a master earthbender. He trains Jianzhu, the man who will later become Avatar Kuruk's earthbending teacher. He says the Beifong bloodline has been cursed because none of his children and grandchildren are earthbenders, and he favors his student Jianzhu, that he loves like a son, over the disappointments his children are. He would've been overjoyed to learn that a few centuries later one of his great-great-great-granddaughters would not only be an earthbender, but one of the most powerful ones of her generation.

    This episode features some of my favorite writing in the whole series. We love Aang. We know he's a good person, but even HE had his blind spots while raising his kids. Of course he paid more attention to Tenzin. After his first two children turned out to be not air benders, he saw new hope for his people when Tenzin was born. Unfortunately, it had a negative affect on Bumi and Kya. They ended up channeling their passive anger on their little brother.

  • @bruceturnbull4219
    @bruceturnbull4219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +206

    I really like (in a storytelling perspective) how Aang and other Avatar characters weren't perfect parents. It would definitely be too easy for Aang to be a great dad and the Avatar at the same time. The guy was trying to rebuild the Air Temples and unite the four kingdoms, and on top of that he had three kids. It makes sense that he spent the little time he had with his kids with only Tenzin, seeing as how Tenzin was needed to repopulate the Air Temples. And it adds to the idea that Aang and all the other Avatars aren’t perfect. They’re not gods; they’re people too, and people will mess up.
    Plenty of people don’t like this cus they feel it’s “out of character” for precious little Aang to not be a great parent, but I couldn’t disagree more. He’s spent 30 years since childhood rebuilding everything, so it’s no wonder he got overwhelmed and started neglecting his children.

      Some people feel like the way in which aang was negligent is out of character. Specifically that he'd take tenzin on a vacation and leave the other kids behind. Aang was a grounded & human father. The reason he seemed to favor Tenzin obviously is because he was the only Airbender borne after a 100 years & when he died, he'd be the sole survivor. Of course he'd favor the hell outta him. Tho that didnt take away or diminish the love he had for Kya & Bumi. He was still a good dad, just not the best. I'm kinda glad he essentially isnt the perfect dad tbh. Also, the other kids have the potential to produce kids who Airbend. You'll see it essentially later moreso in S3

      @UCRkq0ZZa5XvxKE1QGXENNqA What balance though, humans and spirits seem to be content in there own realms and was never a major issues until this point when Unalaq and Vaatu we're deliberately making them evil and aggressive. And before Wan’s time, the spirits basically took over the human world and forced them into reservations, that was not working together that was basically colonizing.
      And Korra barely knows about anything in the spirit world so what gave her the right to make such a big decision without asking anyone else about it other then tenzin. For all she knew there were worst spirits in there Vaatu and unleashed them among the world.

    • @brandonlyon730

      @Scorpio BradleyThen why we're they spirits mutanting any human that came there way and barred them from ever going to places were spirits gathered at (in the humans own world mind you). And yeah despite the Airbenders coesxistig with some spirits they still are forced to live on the lion turtles, if they were so good with the spirits they should've have there own cities outside of the lion turtles but they don’t. Your acting like the airbenders were perfect even though they were just as flawed as anyone else, the alienated Aang and judged him for being the avatar which made him run away and allowed Sozin to go on with his genocide of them.

    • @brandonlyon730
      @brandonlyon730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Scorpio Bradley who said that the spirits were at earth first? Nothing states this in the show as far as the show says it was the spirits that came from there world to colonize the human world and the humans were driven away to the lion turtles for protection. How could've human civilization evolve in the first place if spirits were running everything?
      The airbender monks weren’t suppose to tell Aang he was the Avatar until he was 16 like Roku, but they were more concerned about the war and rushed through the process to make Aang powerful when he had properly matured. It was as much of there own fault.

    I think the big thing that people forget, especially in this book, is that the characters don't see things the way we do. Yes, Unalaq is of course the villain, and that's obvious to us because of how they frame the shots, and the musical accompaniment to his entrance and many of his lines. Korra doesn't hear that. All she hears is her uncle telling her that he's trying to unite the tribes. How would she know any different? I feel like people expect Korra to be better without even considering how she feels throughout all of this. I actually love the struggle Korra goes through with herself and her family here. It's very real and grounded. People are often quick to dismiss her as "crazy" or "stupid" when in reality she's just confused and someone is manipulating her. That causes a rift in her family. It's amazing how people blame Korra for all of this, even though it's Unalaq's doing. Sad, really

    Let's analyze this situation from Aang's point of view.
    1-He's The Avatar and he has a duty to the world, not just any world, a world that needed rebuilding after 100 years of war.
    2-He's the last of his people, and when Tenzin was born, he finally felt that this weight of being the last of his kind was removed, so he decided to teach Tenzin the ways of the nomads, which takes a lot of years of training and discipline, so he unintentionally paid him more attention than his other kids.
    3-He was never taught how to be a parent. He was raised by the monks, and even Zuko points that out at the very first episode, "I suppose you know nothing of fathers, being raised by monks."
    And why do people say that Aang was a bad parent? did he teach his kids to be drug dealers or did he give them the Zuko treatment? Aang simply paid more attention to Tenzin than his other kids, he wasn't a perfect father, but he was a good father, that's why Bumi always sought his attention and wanted him to be proud, and that's why Kya always speaks fondly of him in the comics when it comes to her sexuality.
    I'm starting to think that People who see Aang as a bad father and insult him for it, simply have daddy issues and think all fathers are like their own. Chill Out.

    A lot of people freak out about what Aang's kids say about him in this episode, but it makes sense and it doesn't make Aang a terrible parent. It sounds like he spent more time with Tenzin because he was training Tenzin in airbending, probably while traveling a lot, so he had Tenzin travel with him and tried to make the trips fun. The other kids interpreted more time spent as more love, like kids do, and that sticks with you into adulthood.

And the people she was around, she could trust, mostly bc they were close to her. So now we see her trying to be responsible and do her duty. I saw nothing that was really that bad about her choosing Unalaq over Tenzin and Tonraq in the beginning. Why would she visit a bunch of air temples when there's evil spirits that need her attention😂😂? Plus Tonraq lied to her her whole childhood. Imstead letting her try and find her own way through things, he kept her coddled, not to mention his banishment from the north. Noe granted, now we all know that unalaq is evil. Coming back to this after finishing Book 2, I've long held the theory that Unalaq essentially took a dive and let those Southern Tribe men capture him. After seeing how powerful of a waterbender that Unalaq was, it's _seriously_ doubtful that those men would've gotten the jump on him.

    I mean, considering how dna and genes work, it's not impossible for Boomi or Kaiya to produce airbenders. And you don't need bending to help bring back the culture of airbending. The air temple they just went too was full of acolytes that clearly aren't airbenders, but they can pass on the knowledge and teachings of the forms. So they weren't wrong.

    As a parent I can say NO PARENT is a perfect parent. From ignorance and from impatience we make mistakes. Aang comes off like a real person. Imperfect. I respect that they did that. There will be more of the same theme later. But the final message is, even imperfect parents can raise amazing kids and that is where I am.

    Honestly I really liked finding out that Aang was a less than stellar parent. Too many stories tend to paint the main/popular characters as perfect and upstanding, but LOK took a completely realistic approach and painted adult Aang as just another imperfect human being. - It appears as though Aang never knew his parents, and was raised by the monks with other young airbenders in a large chosen-family of sorts, and in regards to his relationship with Gyatso, Aang was shown favoritism by him, and likely didn't see that bond as a negative thing as far as how it potentially impacted the other children. Also, being the last of his kind, it's realistic that he'd be elated to discover that one of his children was an airbender who could hopefully one day pass that ability down for generations to come; and as the last airbender (until Tenzin) it would of course fall to Aang to train him, and give him as thorough of an airbender experience growing up as possible, since Tenzin would logically be the only one of his children to truly appreciate and benefit from learning about Air Nomad traditions/culture. - It also hints a bit to Aang's desperation, and loneliness as the last airbender. In spite of having friends and family at his side, as well as many adoring people throughout the world, Aang still lacked common ground and cultural identity with literally any other living person on Earth until Tenzin was born. - None of this means that his love for Kya and Bumi is any less, nor does it justify him playing obvious favorites among his children, but it definitely grounds him more as just a regular person with flaws and missteps, in spite of his Avatar status.

    I just watched this a couple of weeks ago. One thing I'd note is that Bumi is about a decade older than Tenzin. Aang was probably more busy building Republic City and restoring the world when Bumi was little than when Tenzin was little. Tenzin being the lone airbender probably had something to do with it, but the spread in ages of the kids could also easily indicate that Aang was just a different points of life and may have had more freedom later on.

Considering everything Aang has been through, that left him with a lot of issues, plus balancing his avatar duties, yeah no surprise he’d fuck up here and there. There’s nothing to say he was a terrible father outside of his mistake of paying Tenzin too much attention either, so idk why the fandom acts like he beat his kids or something

    The firstborn and only nonbender among Aang and Katara's three children, Bumi grew into a rambunctious child who needed close supervision. Similar to his sister Kya, Bumi was somewhat distant from his father, who was focused primarily on his Avatar duties, preserving Air Nomad culture, and training Tenzin in airbending. Regardless, the family remained close, and Bumi was supportive of Kya when she revealed her sexual orientation to him.

      A character same with people in real life can grow and progress, but nothing is dictated that they (like with most people) will be great parents.
      And it all makes sense for why they arent the best of parents. Bruce lost his own parents and focus too much as batman and neglects Daimian, Naruto never had a dad so he doesnt know what its like to be one and he also is too focused on the village and neglects his family, And Anng wanted to revive the air nation but he didnt take much note of his other children.
      All of these characters have great responsibilities to uphold but it drew their attention away to one of the most important responsibilities a parent could have.
