It’s sad to imagine that all the heroes who were some of Bob’s friends all just wanted to relive their glory days just like he did. Frozone’s line of “I don’t see anyone from the old days Bob. Just you.” is a lot darker now.

I'll never get over that Edna remembers all of those Superhero deaths down to the exact date. Cause SHE was the one who made their costumes.
She's blaming herself and taking accountability for every single one of those deaths because the Heros trusted HER to keep THEM save and she feels like she failed all of them.
Taking all that guilt into consideration really puts alot of things Edna says and does in the movie into perspective.

When Bob and Lucius were listening to the police scanner before the burning building, Mirage says "He's not alone. *The fat one's still with him*" meaning that she was originally looking for Lucius/Frozone. Later on, you see that Frozone's location is "KNOWN." The Omnidroid Bob fought in the jungle had a blue light and took him to a lava-filled volcano. After seeing the burning building scene, imagine what would've happened to Frozone if he was fighting the first Omnidroid (which was most likely intended for him) instead of Bob. He would NOT have survived.
They found Bob by accident and chose him instead of Frozone bc Syndrome specifically wanted vengeance against him, and then all Supers after him. But to Syndrome's messed-up psyche, Bob was the figurehead of all Supers; for him, it was personal. Eliminating Super-ness was just a cascading effect from his original hubris against Bob.

They did such a good job with conveying the vibe of what's happening that even when the dialogue and specifics are too complex for kids to really understand, they still generally know what's going down. As a little kid I didn't understand the nuances of the lawsuits or Bob's insurance job, but they conveyed the information and sequence of events so well I understood "people got hurt when he was saving them" "people mad they got hurt-superheroes banned" "dull office job, some sort of paperwork thing. Lady's upset, Bob's not supposed to help but secretly does." It just really goes to show you don't have to dumb it down for kids and underestimate your audience, you just have to be good at how you convey it. It just takes good writing and storyboarding for kids to understand the gist... and then it translates well to adults and ages well because while it's inherently easy to understand, you only fully understand the nuances when you're older. Mr incredible: super strong, super durable
      Mrs incredible: super stretchy
      Vi: force fields and invisibility
      dash: super speed
      Jack Jack: numerous
other than dash, that is basically the fantastic 4, with one of their kids as a reality bender (basically can do whatever he wants)
jack jack can use any power he wants, kind of like a fantastic 4 villain, the super skrull called 'Kl'rrt'' who could use all the powers given to them; typically using the whole family's powers at once, but any super skrull (and there were many) could be imprinted with any powerset and combination of powers (e.g, wolverine's metal claws and cyclops' eye lasers)
dash even has the blonde hair and kind of a similar personality to johnny/human torch

The sad thing is a lot of old content (movies, tv shows, etc) used to be like this. A fun film for the kids and something adults can rewatch and pick up on stuff they missed back when they were young. Now they make kids content as absolute mind melting mush in the belief that kids are dumb and don't deserve any better which means its an absolute nightmare to watch with them as an adult. I went to quite a few films with my nephews and nieces when they were young but if I were still doing that now it'd be a huge chore rather than an enjoyable time with family.

    • @ShadowDemon_4
      @ShadowDemon_4 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

While the theory is good I don't fully believe it for two reasons. For one Edna is very strict on how she creates things and is very proud of her work. Regardless if it's a villain or not I don't think she would actively sabotage a client plus realistically it would ruin her reputation.
(I believe there's a Spider-Man comic with a situation like this too where a man fixes heros and villains costumes while staying neutral)
Secondly Syndrome has stated he creates everything himself and is just as prideful of his creations as Edna. Even as a kid he made his own costume and gadgets. I doubt he would willingly let someone help design something as important as his image. Also I don't believe Syndrome ever realized the dangers of his cape as a boy and just never grew out of thinking they're cool which is why he kept that design choice as he wanted to be better then all the superheros in every way, even in appearance.
If you think about it the side story to this whole movie is about a kid who grew up advancing in knowledge but not emotionally. Even as an adult he never got passed his childish attitude and failed because of it.

Bob's just doing his job to stop the train and save the people inside, but you can tell by his face that it's still gonna hurt.

43:53 Helen saw the reflection of the plane falling directly above them in the water so she shoved her kids out of the way. This scene was also meant to be way darker originally bc her friend Snug, who she used to fly jets with and who loaned her this jet, was supposed to be on the plane with them and Helen wasn't able to save him, in the first script. When Helen looks down at the jet sinking, Snug was meant to be sinking with it, heavily implied to be deceased. That was too dark so they almost completely erased his character from the script.

It also might show to what extent popular culture has normalized conformity. The Incredibles are incredible people. They have talents. The government wants to force everyone to be the same, as does Syndrome. This movie actually touches on some of the same themes as Equus, where the protagonist is a psychologist reflecting on how to deal with a disturbed young man. In learning the young man's history and his unique way of looking at the world, he realizes both the danger and the fact that the world is itself disturbed, and though it is his job to help the young man adjust, he understands that this is suppressing the young man's individuality. Another reason this movie is set in a faux 1960s is that post-WWII was an era of international homogenization, both through capitalism and through communism. I really hate when people say that someone who has issues "just needs therapy," because then therapy becomes a tool of oppression. The government is always right, so anyone who objects just needs to be brainwashed into subservience. If Bob had not acted against the grain, Syndrome probably would have risen to greater heights, and real superheroes would continue to be oppressed.

@@empyreanwizard I think there is a massive gap between someone saying someone "just needs therapy" and it becoming a tool of oppression, pretty much anything that can help people can be a tool of oppression if checks and balances aren't in place to stop it, therapy as it is intended does not dictate what is correct and incorrect behavior, it dictates to you what you're doing and why, so that you may reflect and grow from it, that's why therapy doesn't do anything to people that already think there's nothing wrong with them, or people that simply don't want to change.

FYI their powers are models after the Fantastic Four.
Mr. Incredible is big strong and durable like The Thing.
Ms Incredible is based off Mr Fantastic who is a rubber man.
Violet is based on The Invisible Woman who has invisibility and force fields.
Dash has the personify for Johnny Storm aka Human Torch but is clearly powered dafger Quicksiler or Flash.

They're also modeled after the stereotypes of their roles in the family, including Jack Jack. Dad is super strong a literally Mr. Incredible, the mother is flexible and can adapt to a lot and almost seems to be in multiple places at once, teenage daughter shielding herself away and shy, young son full of energy, baby full of possibilities and potential.

I feel you all missed something important about what bob wants. He isn't a just thrill junky, being in dangerous situations or doing insane workouts or being in a circus isn't what fulfills him. It's HELPING people, and helping them in a way only he can. He likes feeling needed, feeling like he's helping and vital to other people in a way only a superhero could be. His midlife crisis is caused by him legally not being allowed to do that anymore, but the message of the movie is that he can get this fulfillment by being there for his family too. Even during his midlife crisis he still wanted to help people, like when he helped that old woman with her insurance trouble and he didn't need a big battle or dangerous thrills as an excuse to do it.

For the record, coconuts do kill people. The tree can grow super tall and if not kept up with, the fruits will fall by themselves (as ripened fruits do) and if an unlucky person is under it, then at best they got a busted up head, at worse…yeah.

I think something that is very important for context; The Incredibles timeline takes place in the early 60s! The prologue when we see Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl get married was at the end of 1940s. Aside from this helping the settings make sense (the old cars, the mundane environments, etc) it helps better contextualize what is going on in that era, even if it is retro-futuristic. There was a lot happening in the 1900s in our American history-now bring superheroes into the mix! Lots of factors to consider when we see how the heroically gifted are treated 👀

things i love about this movie:
how much of a boss Gazerbeam was. He fought for super rights after they were made illegal, took out 2 of the omnidroids (listen to the beeps when he comes up), and managed to discover the password to syndrome's systems and write it down before he died. He was probably killed by syndrome himself, since he took out two of the robots and died in an enclosed space too small for any of the robots.
Edna Mode is voiced by the director, brad bird.
Syndrome was originally going to capture and kill frozone, until he changes his mind to mr incredible. When fighting mr incredible, the omnidroid V9 immediately brings him to a volcano, where frozone would have been weakened.
frozone's "i don't see anyone from the old days bob, just you" hits way harder when you realize the reason he didn't was because they were all dead.
Syndrome's name is derived from "hero syndrome", where someone believes themselves to be more important and heroic than they are. this fits, since syndrome's reasons for hating bob are a result of his own delusions.
helen's pilotese is 100% accurate, and the way she switches to it from caring mother is chilling
every super is super powerful, but they have their limits. bob braces before stopping the train, and helen can't stretch infinitely (technically a spoiler, but her weakness is expanded on in the 2nd movie)
each super's power is unique, but the ones that survived the longest are also very intelligent. normally if you see a big brawny superhero with super strength you'd assume he's be terrible at stealth, but bob sneaks into syndrome's compound quicker and easier than helen does, despite her having the "stealthy" superpower. not to mention, he's captured at no fault of his own.
edna mode is so against capes because she's the one who gave them to the supers. as such, she feels responsible for every cape-related death.
syndrome's security system is genius. it removes a perp's ability to escape without harming them, which allows you to question them later
when captured, helen lets bob have his vulnerable moment, despite knowing that violet had escaped, which just shows how human the supers really are
another method of showing how human supers are is bob being obsessed with being a super. at first you get the impression that he's just a selfish jerk who longs for the glory days that can't exist anymore, until you realize (through context and his reactions to events in the movie) that he isn't selfish, he just knew he was better at being a super than anything else and chaffed at not being able to do so.
    dash can run on water

Such a fantastic movie, one of if not my favorite. A lot of the arguments I hear for Mr Incredible going into physical labor though tend forget the legal and social precident, though you guys did bring it up a liiiiittle. If he works one of those jobs, its more reason to use his powers, which gives others more reason to sue, fine, or arrest him for breaking the law regardless of the context. people will do it too and you know it, theres a reason the Good Samaritan laws were put into place a few years AFTER supers were illegalized (the law passing in '59 and the supers illegalization being around '47 as we see from the 15 year time jump to 1962, the date on his newspaper at home)
As for government contracts, then you get into the Captain America: Civil War issue. Do you give up your autonomy and just do whatever youre told to do in their interest? What if you morally have to disagree, what will happen then if youre under their thumb? And thats even if they want to hire supers, the same people they forced into hiding (certain minorities in similar situations were barred from employment, not only for obvious discrimination, but it was also feared they would betray the government if a foreign body offered more humane treatment)
Finally, for the side show hustle approach, in a world of recognized supers, itd be less of a wonder or novelty and again give reason to prosecute.
He worked in insurance because he wanted a way he could help the most people without having to get into extra legal trouble (though of course he would indulge when he could take the risk)

He probably blamed himself for everything too.

this is one of those movies where you notice new things everytime you watch it, like frozone telling the story about one of his villains monologing and giving him the chance to escape, only for syndrome to catch himself doing the same thing, implying he’s not like those old school villains
and dash being able to slide down the vine because his suit is friction proof
