Hello Tony, from NZ. good on yer mate for doing your first solo tramp (hike). Don't worry too much about the weight, your body will adjust to it. I'm 73 and still carrying 25kg. Last year I did 67 tramps (hikes) most of them solo and from one day to five days. The mountains are my life. What I am saying here is, keep on doing it, you will become stronger, healthy and able to cope with life's problems. Here we have vast forest and mountains where you can go for weeks without seeing anyone. The concept of fences and the word 'illegal' seem strange to hear, but I suppose you have a bigger population then us. If one had the time to do it every day, it would take two weeks to get your 'legs and wind'. That's what we say here. Good luck on your future trips.

Well done Tony. You got it in a nutshell. See the sun go down and then come up is a nice thing to witness.
You get used to noises, they seem to be amplified after dark. You’ll recognise and be familiar with woodland sounds after a time and they won’t bother you so much.
Arousing a farmer made me chuckle.. best to be avoided.
    ATB for your future adventures.

Congrats on first wild camp Tony 👍🏼. You’ll have the bug now and there’ll be no stopping you.
As for the weight , there are far too many vids on spending a small fortune to save a few grams and it’s all too easy to get hung up on it all.
Best advice I can give you is to carry as much as your comfortable with to make it an enjoyable experience. Over time you will get a feel for what you need to bring and what you don’t. 😉

      Well said 👍.
'Ultra-Light' can be a two-edged sword .. for the novice .. often pricing the associated gear out of the pocket of many keen to get out there.
If one is one of the 'day whatever and have covered whatever distance with a whatever weight ultra-light loadout at a whatever below freezing temperature', then go for it.
For the rest of us, just start! 'Stuff mostly foraged from Home' will often cover most of one's needs .. initially. The garden makes for a good starter testing ground and then one goes from there.
40-odd years ago, an article in a Backpacker Magazine covered the Topic 'Going Light' .. then a new-fangled idea going around. The writer's one point was beware .. 35kg of 'lightweight gear' still weighs 35kg. A military survival expert at the time (for the love of, his name escapes me .. have looked but ..) also stated to this effect, "It is surprising as to actually how little one actually needs in order to make do / survive out there."
We must not let let 'marketing' suck us into that trap .. often 'Less can be More'.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@thomasmusso1147 In Roman times a soldier carried about 35kg. Throughout history, the weight of a soldiers pack has remained fairly consistently between 30-40kg. Every time a way to make gear lighter and/or smaller develops, the extra capacity just gets filled with more gear so the pack never really gets lighter.
The temptation to use the extra capacity you create for more stuff is overwhelming.

Well done Tony. I am a 57 year old female just waiting to go on her first wild camp. Got all the light weight gear and just waiting for a few days without rain to seam seal my Nordisk silnylon tent and then me and Eric (the dog) are off. Rabbit with an axe😄🐇
Loved this Tony! Congrats on your first, first of many no doubt 😍17kg is certainly a weight to bear, I really feel it when mine's that heavy. I have the same tent, great isn't it! I was out in it this weekend and it was super cosy. Love the chair, nice to have a bit of comfort, gorgeous pitch too.
You're so right about the organisation. It's dry bags for me, bags for everything! It does feel like faffing at first but like you say when you get used to it it becomes automatic.
What a beautiful sunrise ♥ Staying out for days is amazing, really is something else.. you'll love it.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, amazing effort :D

Hahahah!!! Oh dear!! What a pleasure!! What a laugh 😂😂 I had such a laugh in so many moments if yours!!
That "yeah I'll give you that, but it's a rabbit with an AXE!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 took me so much by surprise that I laughed so good! And the "alcohol and booz" LOVED it!!
😂😁🍷🍷👌🏻 yes I think you did excellent there bringing with you some little naughty bits if pleasure and luxury!!!
Haha I too have *recently* went wild camping for the first time!!! I'm a 33 y.o. girl, and had *16 kg on my backpack!!!* Omg!! It was *A LOT!!* 🤣🤣😅 so I so know the pain!!
Some of it was due to my camera equipment! Tripod and hefty powerbank and then I had a super cheap but lovely tent with a massive vestibule (but a massive 3.7kg!!) So all in all I was and am happy with what I brought out to my first ever solo wild world camp!! Haha it is such an adventure isn't??
I went to Dartmoor!! *For a full 5 day hike!!* So had to have loads of food, and then the equipment!!
Also, I wanted to say, yeah you are probably carrying so much extra coz you have a lot of liquids on you!! But you probably know that hahaha 😅😅😄lol but I was so well impressed with the makeshift wine bottle!! Loved it!!
I can't wait to actually go out there again now with my bf!! We are working on him getting all the necessary kit!! 😁😁😉

Base layer and long johns, if you camp alone bin the chair (3kg saved), sew one corner of the rain cover to the correct eyelet and keep the ground sheet attached when you pack away, less hassle next time round 😉 look forward to the next vid all the best fella

@@tonyhiggins1924 also one more tip for you! Always always carry emergency blankets! It is so crucial and I forgot on my first ever camp and thank GOD there was a lovely samaritan camper in passing that gave me his! It SAVED me on super cold nights!! But made things sweaty! So...
Also, buy those 'Heat' insulated socks! Amazing too! And very cosy to have fresh, clean socks to change to at night after a long hiking day!

Hello Tony! It was great to see your very first wild camp. I've been doing it all my life, I never called it wild camping, I called it free camping! I've seen a few videos on how to make a bushcraft "chair", but it looks bloody uncomfortable! I’m 56, been wildcamping for a few years now,( its not illegal here in Scotland). Been camping on the Scottish islands, on the Munroes and smaller hills lately. You get to learn on a very steep curve what to take, what to leave behind. Weight and keeping weight down, is ultra important especially on longer hikes. You seem to have enjoyed it and certainly have the ‘right’ attitude to keep it going. What struck me with wild camping and climbing Munroes is what it does for your soul. It literally can be a lifesaver, especially in these mad times. All the best on your travels.

Brilliant job Tony ! Just found your channel today and thoroughly enjoyed the trials and tribulations of your first wild camp.Have subbed and look forward to following your adventures. It's a bit warmer in my part of the world as a Brit expat living in Malaysia for the last 16 years but great to remind myself of what colder weather is like. It's either hot or hot and wet (Oct - Feb) out here all year round. Many fond memories of being out camping most weekends in my younger days over there. Best of luck with your forthcoming adventures and stay safe. ATVB buddy

Absolutely brilliant 👍 I'm 56 and disabled and love camping always in me tent with me dog. We travel on a motorcycle combo with dog in the sidecar👍 always carry what you need to have a comfortable warm camp. Remember travel light freeze at night.😂 Fair play keep the vids coming 👍👍👍👍👍

Good work Phil. I lost my dog last year. If he was still about I would take him. Mostly because I know he would have absolutely hated the camping. Would have titled it, two miserable sods in a tent

Excellent video Tony. 54 year old here who did lots of camping with mates when younger and some family camping but all on campsites- been collecting gear over the winter for a bike packing tour in The Highlands later in the year so will be having a few shorter test runs in Spring (not sure by bones could cope in winter🥴) so great seeing your video on first wild camp experience cheers 👍🏻
