You're no where near sad, you're an inspiration. At 57 you're doing great, I'm 51 and still wanting to do what you are doing. I have some kit, and like you, I'm not into expensive shit, the cheaper stuff works as good, so keep it up 👍

There'll always be people on the internet spewing negativity for no reason other than to get a reaction. It gives them something in their otherwise empty lives.
I personally think your content is great 👍 I enjoy the smaller/newer channels, it's a refreshing change to those with ridiculously expensive kit and you have more relatable content as I'm also new to wildcamping. Keep at it 👍

For the last few years I've booked a campsite in the Lake District & set up my bigger tent as a base camp, then wild camped from there.
You get safe parking, showers, drying rooms, toilets etc for around £20 a night.
Stick your pack on & head up the fells for the night.
Great in summer around Keswick, for a full week & you can take the family.

Dear Tony. I think that its great that you are going out in nature and experience wild camping. You are making a good start. Start small and save. You will learn on the fly. The perfect kit does not exist. It depends on where you go, what you want to do and what personal preferences you have. I love your stories. Keep on camping!

I really like your style Tony, your gentle, deadpan, piss takes of YT/backpacking memes makes me chuckle more than any other YTer does. And it's like you're non "scene" and able to cast a wry eye over the outdoors world.
When I assembled my gear in 2004 (and then, after testing it in the snow at -8, never doing anything more with it), I went for what the OutdoorsMagic reviews said was the best value for money, so I couldn't justify a Hilleberg Akto (£200 then) or an inflatable mattress - it was just a choice of ThermaRest or Multimat, then, I think.
It's interesting to compare how it was then and now. Prices for everything have rocketed - way more than inflation. The big name gear companies are ripping people off, and you're the perfect antidote to that 👍

Hello Tony, don't be a fair weather tramper, go out in all conditions. I don't say this lightly you can be out in good weather and then it all turns to custard .by going out and experiencing all conditions you will not feel so uncomfortable and miserable . of course you must always play it safely and not put your self in danger. I always spray water proofing on my tents and packs even if they are brand new. Also I put small squares of reflector tape on my gear i.e. Knife, phone, axe, all small and large objects. This helps when you are out at night, It's very easy to misplace things . one sweep over the camp sight with your torch and you can pick it out. Don't want to teach you to suck eggs, just a few helpful tips to help you along the long way to camping enlightenment. If you ever come out to NZ where the bush is almost endless I will help you sharpen your bush skills, but hurry I'm 74 this year. Cheers

Great video Tony. Just goes to show how easy it would be to spend an absolute fortune on “wild camping gear” and how little one needs to spend to achieve the same aims! Far too many TH-camrs showing all their fancy, expensive (and mostly provided free) gear most of which they never use again! I’m 66, go out camping at least twice a month and most of my gear is second hand from my mate eBay!

I do lots of outdoor video work here in the US and have been wild camping (as you call it across the big pond) since I was a young Boy Scout. You're definitely headed in the right direction. Wish we could get away with cooking in out tents here but we've got some pretty large wildlife in our forests that think we would be quite tasty with ketchup....LOL! Good to see you are enjoying your new found hobby!! I've enjoyed watching your videos. It sounds as though your pack is around the same weight as mine. I also like my luxuries and I always take a few beers, pint of milk and my Helinox chair. The Cloudpeak 2 is a great tent for the money. I also own the Hilleberg Allak 2 (which the Cloudpeak was copied from) and to be honest I use the Naturehike tent more than I use the Hilleberg (mainly due to the difference in weight). I also own an Osprey Kestrel 48 and it's one of my favourite packs. Keep up with the videos, you seem like my sort of wild camper!! All the best & stay safe:)

Coming from ‘the other side’, ( ie, most of my kit is ‘high end’ stuff), I can vouch that a lot of the time you don’t NEED expensive kit. Its nice to have, but not necessary. Most of the expensive stuff is capable of conditions that you are unlikely to be in. I live in Scotland and like to camp high on the hills, it can get VERY windy up there, so I justify the likes of my second hand Hilleberg on that. The point is that having used high end kit for years, some of it can be over engineered depending on what you intend to use it for. I also don’t follow the snobbery factor that some in the hiking/wildcamping fraternity do, ( and I have seen plenty of snobbery in the years I have been doing this. If it works for you and you enjoy it thats fine. If you want to keep costs down then keep an eye on second hand kit. Some of it is literally brand new and never been used, with the tags still on. Some people are buying kit then deciding not to use it, thats a bargain on the second hand market.

Hi Tony! I really like your videos, I think you've got something unique here and you could easily grow your channel to have a considerable audience. If you're serious about being a camping TH-camr, look into microphones, because (counterintuitively) good audio quality is more important than good video. That was funny about the tent and the mrs.....lol. Image thing ...aww bless. £60 for my full British Army Bergen, £50 for my Eurohike Backpacker 2 DLX and £23 for my MW sleeping bag. £9.99 for a matt. (I have an Arctic army sleeping bag that weighs a ton - but you roast in the coldest of UK weather). I have one of those cooking sets, £9.99 I paid. That little stove £6.95?
When I got stick I used to open her wardrobe door and ask how many times those shoes were worn more than once at an average of £40 - Imelda Marcus would've been envious. End of chat. She passed away god bless her, in 1995 - I still have some of my camping kit from then a Vango tent, haversack from a charity shop £15. But you can't replace the light of your life. Hi Tony. I think we must be travelling on a parallel track, though I live in the North East! I have just turned 60 and have been building up my kit progressively over the past 6 months or so and have left the tent until last. My other half kindly donated some money to me for my 60th and I had set my sights on a Wild Country Helm 1 Compact. Problem was they have been out of stock - I finally ordered it yesterday and it should be here in a few days. Like you, my plan is to have a camp in the back garden so we can get acquainted and then push out further afield. I have a 35 yr old Karrimor 35 litre rucksack which might be too small and my fallback is a similar vintage Karrimor 65Ltr. Slightly apprehensive but looking forwards to some good hikes/camps - if you ever get this far North let me know and we can share our experiences over a pint or two?

I can think of many 'sad pursuits' but wild camping aint one of em. As for kit, it's something you build up gradually over time. I started with a 3 man tent. Then a family tent plus a few camping bits, & before I knew it I had a garage full of stuff. The last thing I bought was a cheap 2 man tent from Tesco. Used it last year & aside from a bit of condensation it was fine. Don't need to spend a fortune. Well not right away

Reply : have you banged your effing head?...... So me and the dog demonstrated the tent that night (back garden).... Great channel, do your thing

I’m 56, used to love camping when I was younger (wild camping, although I never called it that, it was just “proper” camping 😁🤣). I got seriously back into it a few years ago, just getting my stride when covid hit!☹️. All my first equipment was military surplus, mainly canvas. Due to me struggling to carry 30kg up a hillside, I am now investing in lighter gear, just bought a Lanshan Pro 1- 650g weight!😁. Need to invest in a down bag now.

@@tonyhiggins1924 Certainly hope so!😁. It will allow me to explore new pastures. With my previous set up, I was just capable of collapsing at my usual spot, swearing “never again, never again 😬” and taking 30 mins to recover. Now, I’ll be waltzing all over the shop, exploring here and there, finding new pitches.🤪

When my missus heard how much I paid for my new sleeping bag, she got really angry. She said it had to stop. One thing led to another and she stated; ‘Well… either your gear goes, or I will!’
So… I am planning my next trip now. 😊

    👍👍👍 .. good posting .. thanks.
Yep, 'Budget' doesn't necessarily mean rubbish quality.
Going through reviews by those 'who know' .. ignoring the Advertising 'Blurb' and 'Branding' (aka an excuse to load the selling price) can reduce costs appreciably.
Much of the gear out there (or at the very least the material from which it is made) .. out there originates from the same Industrial Complex, if not from under one roof. Brand Names are tacked on afterwards according to Marketer / Seller preference.
Thanks once again for the post .. it gives hope to those who just get overwhelmed by 'marketing' urging all to buy more .. bigger .. better and naturally, cash out of pocket.
Also (last bit of useless information before I run out of rant) .. before one goes cashing out on something new, one should look at what one currently has or can be 'requisitioned' safely. If it does the job satisfactorily and within it's Design Intent .. is paid for .. then reconsider ..
    Take care ..
