Just found this one, excellent. Took me back to my scouting days, bedding one wool blanket and pins, all cooking wood fires and one pot, all kit canvas ex military. We would camp for week or so, all of us ten, eleven year old boys,. them were the days, ha ha.

I am a Scout Leader for a local Troop, and if I were to show them of how Scouting used be done in the good old days, they wouldn't believe me! These days each child comes camping with the latest sleeping bag, roll mats (sometimes inflatables (!) and often the duvet from their bed, and pillows. I would love to give them the experience of camping in winter with minimal gear, but Scouting policies don't allow for that kind of thing anymore, sadly, and although 'green field camping' is still something that can be done, with latrines dug out by the Scouts before the tents go up, it's hard for Leaders to get the licence to support it, but we do our best with what we have these days. I recently joined a new Troop (well, they're a Patrol of 6 Scouts to be honest, with 6 more Cubs coming up in October) and have had a lot of difficulty persuading the Committee (and parents, and the Scouts actually) that camping in October is the norm, not the exception. But the compromise is for them to camp in a small grassed area behind another Troop's Scout Hut, so if the weather turns foul they can make their ways indoors! Needless to say, I might accidently lose the keys to the Scout hut so we have to be outside, but we'll see (safeguarding / duty of care, and all that!) I believe that Scouting is about the developing character of our young people, and I feel it will take some convincing that camping with minimal gear, hiking for miles and setting up in a woods or in a field somewhere is exactly that - character building! These days we can't take Scouts off camping just anywhere, it has to be in an official Scout camp with toilet facilities (which kind of makes sense considering we are co-ed - boys and girls in Scouting, which is a very good thing!). For myself, the kind of minimalist camping you do Giles is right up my Straße; and when I can, I escape to a small bit of woodland and camp with a tarp (however I confess to using a bivvy bag too), but I think next time I'm following your example Giles! Keep 'em coming good sir, it's an inspiration to all of us - and a welcome escape for us poor sods who are chained to an office desk, albeit the kitchen table at home, Monday to Friday! Thanks Giles, you're keeping the flame alive for us all - and if it inspires just one of us to follow your example, every mile you tramp, every damp and cold night, and every annoying root or branch you sleep on is worth it to us all. But also the kind and high praise which I am honoured to receive but really do not deserve because I’m just having fun !!! I can only imagine your frustration at what has become, from what you describe, perhaps an overly cautious approach to things like camping. Sadly this approach I think encroaches many aspects of peoples lives and work these days. And that’s not to say that anyone should condone taking unnecessary risks, but that we must accept that everything which is challenging and therefore deeply satisfying, will have an element of risk. For yous guys in ‘the front line’ of trying to balance and, moreover, persuade parents (and children) that with correct equipment and control, these usually minuscule risks are so worth the benefits that the young people will reap from your and others hard work. And okay, it may also involve occasional discomfort and perhaps learning experiences along the way - but that’s just part of the show. The most satisfying things in life invariably contain challenges. I hope you manage to get your Troop on a few meaningful adventures. Sounds to me as if you can’t - no one can. @@gilesbinyon yes i did unlike today the idot box and phones didnt rule your life you got out and did stuff, hell i had old canvas fishing umbrella about 45 inch and if you remember the old wind breaks with wooden posts at the coast. i had two off them no poles and just put up brolly added wind breaks around edge with cut wood and that was my tent. a tarp i had a hammock or if sleeping on ground i had couple pillow casses i stuffed. mind you i use catty now and miss more than i hit so wouldnt hunt with one now, also we had so much wild food back then as more hedges and woods and copses.

Good morning Giles, have just discovered your channel, great viewing. Appreciate the way you keep it simple and try to stick to old principles when possible, good to see. There is something very haunting about old an partially forgotten railway lines, all of that movement and energy at one time now laid dormant, it must have been an enormous effort to dig out all of the earth and would have been quite a spectacle no doubt. Amazing to think all of the journeys made on it now long since past. All best.

I only found out about you yesterday ( Thursday 12/1/23 ) and have sibscribed great videos. You are like an English KENNETHKRAM into nature and getting on with it all the best mate
One other thing I’ve done, is use a bed of dry leaves or grass several inches thick under a sleeping tarp to keep you up off the ground. Something like that under the part of your shelter you lay on might help smooth out the uneven ground and keep you warmer and more comfortable. Just a thought. 😊

Hello sir Giles this is your friend in Arizona David I wanted to let you know I just get a shot in the arm every time I see you with all your natural fiber tents and all that and you're not getting any constant sleep you are a trooper. Something I never see any obvious bushcrafters still is eat fruit only once never say the other night I watch about 45 different bushcrafters. I've learned so much from survivalist minimalist and truck camping. I've got to bug once I get my vehicle even if it's just the car I will be car camping and taking a little small hikes I have asthma it has been bothering me as of late. Wow only 2litres of water. That's impressive really. Amazing thing is that's still 20% of your 10kg pack. Alot of people forget how heavy water is. Another great video mate 👍
Thanks very much for that Dan. Yes, i I can get by on 2L but may need to supplement it in the summer (🍻🍺 - essential hydration etc). Also nearly half the water is carried on my belt so eases the pack weight 👍thx again 👍

@@gilesbinyon I'll never forget one time sat in a storm drain nursing a bad ankle, I said I wonder what our water situation is like, after some rummaging my buddy said is this enough & out of his pack came 3 big 2 litler coke bottles full of water, I couldn't believe it was me with the busted ankle & not him? He is a big bloke who prides himself on carrying the most weight, we did an over nighter once I couldn't even lift his pack it was like 38kg or something stupid.

Heavy rain! Apparently your shelter kept you dry. I was wondering about how well that arrangement would work. There is a section of old railway in central Wisconsin that has been turned into a hiking trail. It’s about 20 miles long and has four tunnels along the way. One of the tunnels is a mile long. It was a nice hike.
Crikey !!! A tunnel a mile long which you can hike through - sounds great. Not enough old railway lines have been converted into trails here in the UK I think. We have so many around the country side too. And they really lend themselves to cycling being generally reasonably straight and flat 👍

I tried to replicate your base sleeping set up in my garden (with the addition of a roll mat). Just got too cold and uncomfortable on the back and had to come in at 4.30am. You’re made of tough stuff!
Thanks Lex. Sometimes the forest floor is not as cold as bare earth or grass because it usually has air trapping debris (twigs and leaves). Also did you have a fire beside you and/or was it a particularly cold night - may be worth another go ? Good luck 👍

I was concerned that these ones are non-biodegradable because they have clearly been hanging around for some years and don’t appear to have degraded much 😐 Cheers 👍
It’s been awhile since I’ve done any walking and camping. In my youth I’d carry 20 + kg, a good chunk was food and water, but I’d say a 10kg pack is pretty light. Mind you I’ve not weighed anything for awhile so have no idea what my setup weighs now, a lot lighter than what it used to!
Thanks Myles. Yes, your kit is likely to have got lighter over the years due to advances in gear weight reduction - problem is it all seems to rely heavily on plastic/synthetics 😐
@@gilesbinyon I think some of the problem is the cost of good natural gear, the oilskin tarp I want is £130 compared to the same size plastic tarp for £50. The canvas & leather pack I want is £350 but the one I can afford is £100 but is nylon & plastic. I say the same thing to people about plastic handle tools, everyone seems to want plastic axe handles now? I can't understand why they are horrible to use, I'm sticking with wood. Natural fibers get their waterproofing from a close weave (military canvas) , a layer of wax or in the case of wool, felting, thereby allowing the user to avoid PFAs altogether (forever chemicals) Their pack weight is a small price to pay for peace of mind, methinks.
Great channel, subscribed! In answer to your question about tree guards; those ones are not biodegradable but biodegradable versions are available and the Woodland Trust committed to only using those from the beginning of this year in their woodlands. There is also the Forestry Plastics Working Group which includes a number of forest trusts, which is looking to eliminate single use plastics in all UK woodland as soon as possible. In my opinion they're really late on implementing this, but at least it's a start.

3rd one I've watched today! Only half a blanket! Awesome. Just a thought, would you consider a wool coat instead of the half blanket. I've just bought a 100% pure new wool Harris Tweed coat for the grand sum of £8 from a second hand shop. I intend giving it a try as my main covering, plus can wear it too lol.. Not for awhile yet as recovering from surgeries.. It's a really thick coat but also, wearing it would be easier than carrying it in the pack, but obviously would need to slow the pace, so might not work for you. Just a thought though..
Thanks again Mally. Well done with the coat - second hand shops can be a great source of affordable non-synthetic gear (I’ve had success with wool blankets). A woollen coat would double as a small blanket but, as you say, quite a bulky item to carry when not being worn. Wishing you a speedy recovery from surgery in time for spring camping 👍

Have you watched kusk bushcraft he’s from Canada and he does minus 30 with wool blanket and small pack like yourself, you might be surprised the power of fire and how minimal you can go👍
@@orraman5427 understand that and I’d take bigger tarp and ventile jacket, as long as you got the fire to keep warm and dry gear out and right camp location it can be done and was before synthetics came along, fire is key, look up Paul smith bushcraft he’s from Scotland
You did some fancy clogging at the end there! That went right along with the music. I LEARNED about the lightweight firepit/screen from this video! THANKS. Particularly NEW to me was the use of the set for providing just THAT MUCH needed extra warmth for cool-weather comfort. THERE IS LIGHT weight and there is TOO LIGHT weight when building a loadout. You look fit: I would have taken a foam mat or air bed to mitigate the problem with undulating ground. Now, I am a happy new subscriber!

Nice to see a UK based uploader, when people said it was Not possible to do it in our country confused me. So Romans, Saxon, Norman's, Danes all used holiday Inn? The only problem would be clean safe water in my opinion because most rivers have to much chemicals from farms and sewage

Thank you for your great video, I had to laugh at your comment on coconut oil, it's what I use, we had some very hot weather here in British Columbia last summer, for the first time it hit 50 degrees C or 122 F it was the first time ever, the coconut oil leaked and destroyed my sleeping bag, so make sure to pack the oil right!

Such a shame that a humble and innocent pastime of wild camping ain’t allowed. Should be licensed in my view, most wild campers leave their surroundings better than they found them. You do bring a whole new meaning to it though with as much ‘natural’ as you can and no product plugs and other shill. Nice to see someone enjoying themselves and not just trying to profit.

Thank you Dan. That’s a really good point and it has crossed my mind a few times too. At the moment I only clear rocks and sticks from under the bed. And I haven’t yet tried dragging more leaf litter under for insulation. I don’t like to disrupt the surroundings too much if I can help it and prefer quick deployment/pack up where possible. But it’s worth considering- deffo 👍
Sorry to be argumentative matey, however, military kit is what most people start with. They then see, and more importantly feel how heavy, damp, even wet it is, and it's not as tough as lots of materials now for sale. So they then start to buy lightweight tough kit made for the outdoors etc. Having said all that, an NBC suit might be handy right now❗️😳 Anyway, I enjoyed the video. Thanks.👍🏼
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate your comment. Yes, going plastic free is really tough (almost impossible at the moment!), and there are many disadvantages with natural fibre kit. You mention some of them and I do too in a lot of the vids. But I do think it is worth having a go and the challenge can be fun too! And maybe just maybe, if there is high demand manufacturers may start to supply camping kit which is more in harmony with the outdoors. Cheers 👍

Myself, I have all the "military kit" sadly now taking up space in wardrobes etc. It definitely doesn't have to be plastic or even derivatives. RAB for example, I have three of their mid layer shirts made from coconut fibres. They are all tough, wick moisture really well, and don't smell. Anyway, each to their own. You take good care, stay safe my friend.

Thank you Mike. I just clear out the pot as much as possible then add some water and a tiny pinch of household soap. Put it on the fire for a minute then slosh around using hands to clean it. It’s then a case of rinsing but using as little precious water as possible !!! I also carry a small piece of stainless steel scrub for burnt on bits 👍
@@gilesbinyon ahh I see, I wondered what that was thank you. I did learn many many years ago as a cub scout, that if you smear washing up liquid around the outside of your pans it's easier to wash the black sooty mess off from an open fire!
Are you using a modified collapsible colander as a fire pit? I've searched around the web and that is the only thing that comes close to what your using.
Your carrying a nice looking knife. Ever have any problems when you go into a pub? I've heard English knife laws are kinda strange. I also like military surplus gear, but I tend to still use a tent and sleeping bag, because in the summer it can get bloody cold. I'd love to tramp around England, but I'm just too old now, and no money to get there. Even on a day hike, I carry more water then I think I will need. Generally about 112 ounces. Or if its going to be hot and I know it, I will up that to 128 ounces or one gallon. I don't like skimping on water or food when I hike.
Thanks James. Yes you’re right, you don’t take a fixed blade knife into a pub or, indeed, anywhere in public in the UK (hopefully it’s the same in the US?). Knife laws have been tightened up the last 5 years or so and are just beginning to have an effect now we hope. 👍 (check out my ‘UK to hiking and wild camping’ video)

I got them from an eBay shop but I cannot remember the manufacturer name and unfortunately I am away at the moment and unable to check the label. You could try searching ‘workwear trousers’ as this is what they are. They are mainly cotton but do, unfortunately, have a small amount of synthetic 👍

Hi and thanks for commenting. Yes, when I got the one in this video I had to repair it and also wash it in a delicate cold wash using Nikwax Detergent to avoid removing any previous proofing agents. Then straight into a basin of Nikwax treatment for canvas. It has been pretty good since then 👍

Hi Gean. Yes the backpack is Croatian Army Woodland Camo I seem to remember. And I got it from eBay. It comes very low slung and I didn’t make alterations to it (yet !) because it seems quite comfortable 👍

I can only imagine your frustration at what has become, from what you describe, perhaps an overly cautious approach to things like camping. Sadly this approach I think encroaches many aspects of peoples lives and work these days. And that’s not to say that anyone should condone taking unnecessary risks, but that we must accept that everything which is challenging and therefore deeply satisfying, will have an element of risk.
For yous guys in ‘the front line’ of trying to balance and, moreover, persuade parents (and children) that with correct equipment and control, these usually minuscule risks are so worth the benefits that the young people will reap from your and others hard work. And okay, it may also involve occasional discomfort and perhaps learning experiences along the way - but that’s just part of the show. The most satisfying things in life invariably contain challenges.
I hope you manage to get your Troop on a few meaningful adventures. Sounds to me as if you can’t - no one can. Good luck and thx again 👍

@@gilesbinyon yes i did unlike today the idot box and phones didnt rule your life you got out and did stuff, hell i had old canvas fishing umbrella about 45 inch and if you remember the old wind breaks with wooden posts at the coast. i had two off them no poles and just put up brolly added wind breaks around edge with cut wood and that was my tent. a tarp i had a hammock or if sleeping on ground i had couple pillow casses i stuffed. mind you i use catty now and miss more than i hit so wouldnt hunt with one now, also we had so much wild food back then as more hedges and woods and copses.

Good morning Giles, have just discovered your channel, great viewing. Appreciate the way you keep it simple and try to stick to old principles when possible, good to see. There is something very haunting about old an partially forgotten railway lines, all of that movement and energy at one time now laid dormant, it must have been an enormous effort to dig out all of the earth and would have been quite a spectacle no doubt. Amazing to think all of the journeys made on it now long since past. All best.

In the US, we have similar issues with unused and unmaintained canals, with their towpaths, and with derelict lumber railway rights of way.

One other thing I’ve done, is use a bed of dry leaves or grass several inches thick under a sleeping tarp to keep you up off the ground. Something like that under the part of your shelter you lay on might help smooth out the uneven ground and keep you warmer and more comfortable. Just a thought. 😊

Hello sir Giles this is your friend in Arizona David I wanted to let you know I just get a shot in the arm every time I see you with all your natural fiber tents and all that and you're not getting any constant sleep you are a trooper. Something I never see any obvious bushcrafters still is eat fruit only once never say the other night I watch about 45 different bushcrafters. I've learned so much from survivalist minimalist and truck camping. I've got to bug once I get my vehicle even if it's just the car I will be car camping and taking a little small hikes I have asthma it has been bothering me as of late. @@gilesbinyon I'll never forget one time sat in a storm drain nursing a bad ankle, I said I wonder what our water situation is like, after some rummaging my buddy said is this enough & out of his pack came 3 big 2 litler coke bottles full of water, I couldn't believe it was me with the busted ankle & not him?
He is a big bloke who prides himself on carrying the most weight, we did an over nighter once I couldn't even lift his pack it was like 38kg or something stupid.

Heavy rain! Apparently your shelter kept you dry. I was wondering about how well that arrangement would work. There is a section of old railway in central Wisconsin that has been turned into a hiking trail. It’s about 20 miles long and has four tunnels along the way. One of the tunnels is a mile long. It was a nice hike.
Crikey !!! A tunnel a mile long which you can hike through - sounds great. Not enough old railway lines have been converted into trails here in the UK I think. We have so many around the country side too. And they really lend themselves to cycling being generally reasonably straight and flat 👍

I tried to replicate your base sleeping set up in my garden (with the addition of a roll mat). Just got too cold and uncomfortable on the back and had to come in at 4.30am. You’re made of tough stuff!
Thanks Lex. Sometimes the forest floor is not as cold as bare earth or grass because it usually has air trapping debris (twigs and leaves). Also did you have a fire beside you and/or was it a particularly cold night - may be worth another go ? Good luck 👍

It’s been awhile since I’ve done any walking and camping. In my youth I’d carry 20 + kg, a good chunk was food and water, but I’d say a 10kg pack is pretty light. Mind you I’ve not weighed anything for awhile so have no idea what my setup weighs now, a lot lighter than what it used to!
Thanks Myles. Yes, your kit is likely to have got lighter over the years due to advances in gear weight reduction - problem is it all seems to rely heavily on plastic/synthetics 😐
@@gilesbinyon I think some of the problem is the cost of good natural gear, the oilskin tarp I want is £130 compared to the same size plastic tarp for £50. The canvas & leather pack I want is £350 but the one I can afford is £100 but is nylon & plastic.
I say the same thing to people about plastic handle tools, everyone seems to want plastic axe handles now? I can't understand why they are horrible to use, I'm sticking with wood.

Natural fibers get their waterproofing from a close weave (military canvas) , a layer of wax or in the case of wool, felting, thereby allowing the user to avoid PFAs altogether (forever chemicals) Their pack weight is a small price to pay for peace of mind, methinks.

Great channel, subscribed! In answer to your question about tree guards; those ones are not biodegradable but biodegradable versions are available and the Woodland Trust committed to only using those from the beginning of this year in their woodlands. There is also the Forestry Plastics Working Group which includes a number of forest trusts, which is looking to eliminate single use plastics in all UK woodland as soon as possible. In my opinion they're really late on implementing this, but at least it's a start.

Just a thought, would you consider a wool coat instead of the half blanket.
I've just bought a 100% pure new wool Harris Tweed coat for the grand sum of £8 from a second hand shop. I intend giving it a try as my main covering, plus can wear it too lol.. Not for awhile yet as recovering from surgeries..
It's a really thick coat but also, wearing it would be easier than carrying it in the pack, but obviously would need to slow the pace, so might not work for you. Just a thought though..

A woollen coat would double as a small blanket but, as you say, quite a bulky item to carry when not being worn. Wishing you a speedy recovery from surgery in time for spring camping 👍

Have you watched kusk bushcraft he’s from Canada and he does minus 30 with wool blanket and small pack like yourself, you might be surprised the power of fire and how minimal you can go👍
@@Nofixedabode859 Dry cold is one thing but wet cold is a different beast altogether. When it's pissistently raining staying dry is a major issue.
@@orraman5427 understand that and I’d take bigger tarp and ventile jacket, as long as you got the fire to keep warm and dry gear out and right camp location it can be done and was before synthetics came along, fire is key, look up Paul smith bushcraft he’s from Scotland
You did some fancy clogging at the end there! That went right along with the music. I LEARNED about the lightweight firepit/screen from this video! THANKS. Particularly NEW to me was the use of the set for providing just THAT MUCH needed extra warmth for cool-weather comfort. THERE IS LIGHT weight and there is TOO LIGHT weight when building a loadout. You look fit: I would have taken a foam mat or air bed to mitigate the problem with undulating ground. Now, I am a happy new subscriber!

Nice to see a UK based uploader, when people said it was Not possible to do it in our country confused me. So Romans, Saxon, Norman's, Danes all used holiday Inn? The only problem would be clean safe water in my opinion because most rivers have to much chemicals from farms and sewage

Thank you for your great video, I had to laugh at your comment on coconut oil, it's what I use, we had some very hot weather here in British Columbia last summer, for the first time it hit 50 degrees C or 122 F it was the first time ever, the coconut oil leaked and destroyed my sleeping bag, so make sure to pack the oil right!

Such a shame that a humble and innocent pastime of wild camping ain’t allowed. Should be licensed in my view, most wild campers leave their surroundings better than they found them. You do bring a whole new meaning to it though with as much ‘natural’ as you can and no product plugs and other shill. Nice to see someone enjoying themselves and not just trying to profit.

Thank you Dan. That’s a really good point and it has crossed my mind a few times too. At the moment I only clear rocks and sticks from under the bed. And I haven’t yet tried dragging more leaf litter under for insulation. I don’t like to disrupt the surroundings too much if I can help it and prefer quick deployment/pack up where possible. But it’s worth considering- deffo 👍

Sorry to be argumentative matey, however, military kit is what most people start with. They then see, and more importantly feel how heavy, damp, even wet it is, and it's not as tough as lots of materials now for sale. So they then start to buy lightweight tough kit made for the outdoors etc. Having said all that, an NBC suit might be handy right now❗️😳 Anyway, I enjoyed the video. Thanks.👍🏼
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate your comment. Yes, going plastic free is really tough (almost impossible at the moment!), and there are many disadvantages with natural fibre kit. You mention some of them and I do too in a lot of the vids. But I do think it is worth having a go and the challenge can be fun too! And maybe just maybe, if there is high demand manufacturers may start to supply camping kit which is more in harmony with the outdoors. Cheers 👍

Myself, I have all the "military kit" sadly now taking up space in wardrobes etc. It definitely doesn't have to be plastic or even derivatives. RAB for example, I have three of their mid layer shirts made from coconut fibres. They are all tough, wick moisture really well, and don't smell. Anyway, each to their own. I just clear out the pot as much as possible then add some water and a tiny pinch of household soap. Put it on the fire for a minute then slosh around using hands to clean it. It’s then a case of rinsing but using as little precious water as possible !!! I also carry a small piece of stainless steel scrub for burnt on bits 👍

I did learn many many years ago as a cub scout, that if you smear washing up liquid around the outside of your pans it's easier to wash the black sooty mess off from an open fire!

Are you using a modified collapsible colander as a fire pit? I've searched around the web and that is the only thing that comes close to what your using.

Your carrying a nice looking knife. Ever have any problems when you go into a pub? I've heard English knife laws are kinda strange. I also like military surplus gear, but I tend to still use a tent and sleeping bag, because in the summer it can get bloody cold. I'd love to tramp around England, but I'm just too old now, and no money to get there. Even on a day hike, I carry more water then I think I will need. Generally about 112 ounces. Or if its going to be hot and I know it, I will up that to 128 ounces or one gallon. I don't like skimping on water or food when I hike.
Thanks James. Yes you’re right, you don’t take a fixed blade knife into a pub or, indeed, anywhere in public in the UK (hopefully it’s the same in the US?). Knife laws have been tightened up the last 5 years or so and are just beginning to have an effect now we hope. 👍 (check out my ‘UK to hiking and wild camping’ video)

I got them from an eBay shop but I cannot remember the manufacturer name and unfortunately I am away at the moment and unable to check the label. You could try searching ‘workwear trousers’ as this is what they are. They are mainly cotton but do, unfortunately, have a small amount of synthetic 👍

Yes, the haversack slings very low and I thought I would be customising it to raise it up. However, I haven’t had any issues with discomfort at all (yet!!!) so I am leaving it as it came for now 👍

Hi and thanks for commenting. Yes, when I got the one in this video I had to repair it and also wash it in a delicate cold wash using Nikwax Detergent to avoid removing any previous proofing agents. Then straight into a basin of Nikwax treatment for canvas. It has been pretty good since then 👍

Hi Gean. Yes the backpack is Croatian Army Woodland Camo I seem to remember. And I got it from eBay. It comes very low slung and I didn’t make alterations to it (yet !) because it seems quite comfortable 👍
