Conquering the Welsh Matterhorn: Wild Camping in the shadow of Cnicht!

  • In this video we head out on our first wild camp in the beautiful Moelwyn mountain range of Snowdonia National Park. Our journey centred on conquering Cincht, commonly referred to as the Welsh Matterhorn. From the summit we picked out a camp spot between two Llyn's a couple of miles in the distance. The weather was both windy and wet in typical British fashion.
    Being unfamiliar to the area and with plenty of off piste navigating, we took our time to scour the location for a suitable camp. The tents on this trip are the Wild Country Blizzard 2, Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 and Hilleberg Soul. Darkness fell quickly on camp, so we took to sheltering in the tents to start tea. on the menu was fillet beef in black pepper sauce with a few beers to wash it down.
    The next morning came and so did the weather. The wind picked up and must have been gusting at around 40mph. Being inexperienced with a new tent, we then made a crucial and very costly mistake when packing away.
    We hope you enjoy the video. If you do, please consider liking our video and subscribing to our channel. Cheers.

    Brilliant vid lads, i live in the town at the base of the Moelwynion-Blaenau Ffestiniog. The name Cnicht comes from the fact that the mountain looks like an engish knight's helmet, but the welsh couldnt pronounce the word Knight so they pronounced it Cnicht, hense the name.

    I got my abisko lite 2 after having my cloud peak 2 flattened in a storm 😂 and love it. Tbe features are the best ive had in a tent, and ots very strong. You do have to handle any tent correctly in high winds, or even the best can fail. Loving your videos, very well produced 👍

      @borderraiders  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it’s a really well thought out tent feature wise and it is very strong. Like you said proper form is essential or any tent can fail, which we learnt the hard way 😂 thanks for watching and all the best - BR

    Always adore your vids guys! I’ve camped here before myself and it’s such a stunning location. Especially in summer when you can have a swim in the llyns. (Don’t love the ticks though) Sorry about Sam’s tent :( keep up the awesome work ❤

      Thanks Lisa, we really appreciate your comment 🙌 it’s a cracking location isn’t it, feels very secluded and the llyns like you said are stunning. In the summer it would be so refreshing on a hot day to take a dip, not one for this trip though 😅 All the best - BR

    Hi Guys great video, I recognise Llynnau Cerrig-myllt perfect flat area in between for camp, When weather on Moelwyns is looking bad I head for Llyn Edno then , west of here is a sheepfold which will offer great shelter from the wind. The Rhinogs is a superb place for wild camping , its very wild without paths , but really worth the effort. Maybe I'll run into you lot at some point, Ive got a video of the Rhinogs wildcamp on TH-cam type Rhinog Fach/fawr Wildcamp Sept 23, all the best Gabby. liked and subscribed.

    Hi guys, what a stunning location. I picked up a Blizzard 2 towards the end of last year and I've developed a bit of a love/hate relationship with it. I love that for just under £300 I have a winter tent with a footprint that does a job for me on an exposed and windswept Dartmoor. I love that it feels solid and can be anchored securely with the many guylines that are a great length. But I'm 53 and not as supple as I used to be so the lack of headroom is a killer on long winter nights and getting in and out is a "proper ball ache" although the footprint makes it easier to do without getting soggy knees. I haven't had a problem with the poles being tight though. All said a cracking tent for the money for someone that's not as old and knackered as me. Might move it on but probably keep it for spring and autumn when I'm not holed up in the tent for so long. Cheers guys, look forward to your next outing. 👍

      Hi mate and you’ve hit the nail on the head with this summary. We share many of your sentiments regarding its pros and cons. Why it’s not a few inch’s taller is very strange really, it would have made the livability so much better and it really clips the wings on this tents potential. All the best - BR

    Great video as always 👍 what was the mistake that lead to the bent pole?

    • @borderraiders
      @borderraiders  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching! The mistake was to take out the guylines and pegs on the side facing the wind, this caused the tent structure to fail and then flip over. Its should have had the poles dropped whilst still being full braced effectively, and ideally working from the sheltered side first and then working into the wind. All the best - BR
