This is similar to the fork in the comp model, but without the lockout and multi circuit dampening. 3) The Rockhopper Comp actually uses a different drivetrain in the United States than it does internationally. Thank you, that was extremely helpful. It was clearly set out, well organised, not biased, and with just the right amount of detail. It was also IMHO the right length. Only one other comment: I would have liked to know the weight of each bike, as I am about to order Comp or Elite 29 (2022 model).
Thank you very much! And I agree having the weights in the video would’ve have been great; I always try to do that in my videos but unfortunately specialized does not disclosure this information on their website like some other brands do.

Perfect! Thank you! Thank you for doing a Specialized comparison video. I’ve seen your Trek videos which have also been very helpful with shopping for my first bike. After all the research I’m stuck between the Marlin 7 and Rockhopper Elite. Would love to find that comparison video!
Thank you! I have a lot of videos on the 2022/2023 marlins, and currently working on a 2022/2023 rockhopper video that should be out in the next few days!
The elite have a number of similarities vs 2021 Trek Marlin 7 with prices a US$100 more expensive. But it do comes with tubeless anyway. Good comparison video👍🏻. I personally prefer the 2021 Marlin 7 with that great marigold to radioactive red two tone colors which I got it delivered to me 2 days ago (check my video upload). I too own an 11 years old Giant Yukon disc still with excellent like new condition. So my next purchase will be definitely the Specialized rockhopper elite if home space permits me to buy one more. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I recently purchased a Rockhopper Elite 29 XL. After riding it the first day I replaced the 30T front ring with a 34 T ring because I didn't like spinning out while going down mild hills. This required a new crankset and bottom bracket. It cost about $150 after the credit the dealer gave me for the "old" parts which he will reuse. This may not be a problem for riders who use their bikes exclusively for trail riding but I use mine most often on tamer trails and bike paths. Also after about 250 miles I have found that I have never used the 2 largest rings in the back; before I changed to the 34T in the front I had no need for the 3 largest rings in the back (the largest ring is a 50 or 51T; a 42T would have been more than enough for me I think which I think may be the official spec). The other major modification I made was to install a 3" riser for the stem/handlebars for a more comfortable ride. I previously rode a hybrid with 42mm wide tires. The new bike hasn't really lowered my average speed much though, going from about 13 or 14 mph to about 12 or 13 mph. If I were doing the modification again I would probably get a 36T ring in the front, although if my largest rear ring was only 42T I would probably stick with the 34T in front. And thanks for the videos, they are very helpful.
Really wish you posted this before i bought my Rockhopper Sport just so i could have clear definition of what these parts do compared to the other models. Here in Ontario Canada the pirce is MUCH higher then you have stated however still same price gaps between models. I enjoy my Rockhopper Sport as i am just beginning...again, however there are features on the Comp that i would of preferred and debated paying the extra $$$ for a long while. Like this Video
I went with the Elite! It's a wonderful machine. Thanks for the excellent presentation, sir. Trek vs Specialized comparison on 2021 entry level models?
Ohhhh....good to see our mate moving to other brands, m sure Trek won't b very excited...jokes apart, as always thanks for the video, very detailed, simple & informative.
Small correction about the drivetrain: Rockhopper 27.5 Comp in 2x version uses Acera hardware. I have one so that's first hand info. Apart from that - very useful vid, great to watch!
For the 2021 model? I know the 2020 rockhopper comp used acera hardware but I think they changed it all to micro shift in 2021, but that’s interesting if they didn’t!
Actually I checked just now. I didn’t realize this before but the same bike in the US has different specifications. The US bike is listed to have microshift parts while the international version has altus/acera shimano parts. Which country did you buy it in?
@@TalalipopMTB Yes, 2021 model, bought in Europe, Poland. Edit: You're right, I checked it as well - it seems like there are 2 versions of hardware for this model, or even more. For example the catalog says my model should have Acera shift levers and Alivio rear derailleur, while my bike has only Acera there.
From what I can tell, Marlin has the fork lockout and 29mm stanchions as opposed to the rockhopper sport which has no lockout and 28mm. I have the marlin 6 and I picked it over the specialized because it looks better imo.
Thank you so much for the video. There is stock for a Rockhopper Comp at my local store. I only had a question. I wanted to buy a Trek Dual Sport but there is a delay of many months to get it, so I was considering to buy the Rockhopper Comp instead. However, my ideal bike is the hybrid type because I want to use it mostly (80%) on paved roads and maybe 20% on light trails. Would you recommend me to buy the Rockhopper Comp? They also offered me to change the tyres to a one similar to a hybrid bike.` Thank you so much for your help!!!
Great video, I could have used this about a month ago. Lol Ended up buying a Rockhopper elite 27.5, really enjoy the bike and can keep up with friends riding 29ers.

I really like the analysis of the components, which helped me understand them better. Can you tell me roughly what weight difference you would expect between the Comp and Elite/Expert? I asked because my son has an XL Rockhopper and I have M Rockhopper and his is about 3kg lighter! His is a little newer too. I haven't examined the components in detail but will def be looking at those forks! Thanks

The comp has MicroSHIFT Advent drivetrain which imo is better than the expert’s plastic sram sx eagle. Put a nice fork and a dropper on the Comp and you’d have a great bike for around $1,000
Of all 2021 Rockhopper lineup, the best color scheme imo is white logo on red and black frame. But why only offer these two at the base level? I am planning to convert my base white on black to elite or expert after buying another one to do parts swap.
Haha I understand that dilemma; that's partly why I chose my Trek marlin 5 instead of a higher end marlin 7 or other bike. Just loved the black and white color scheme.

Great video...I have the
Comp and suggest anyone starting at the very least get into the comp. That is where things start to change.
Aw thank you! I listed the price in USD so that's probably why?
Good to see that you shift in other brands.Keep it up.
Thanks!
YES I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS, THANK YOU
HAHAHA you’re welcome!!
I went with the Elite! It's a wonderful machine. Thanks for the excellent presentation, sir.
Trek vs Specialized comparison on 2021 entry level models?
I'll probably do that in the near future :)
I just got the Elite a few weeks ago as well! so happy with it.
@@TalalipopMTB This, is going to be epic!
@@jordanbezeau Amazing! She rides like a dream!

Thanks for the review as a beginner ill go for the sport great commuter and trails
You’re welcome!!
Thankyou so much for making this video
You’re welcome!!
That’s crazy; not sure why they would switch it up so much between countries but that’s an interesting note.
Easy, clear information 👌🏻
Thanks!
Great video exactly what I wanted to know
Thanks!
Very systematic and precise description. 👍
Thank you!
Great review. Exactly what I needed to buy the specialized
Thanks!! Glad it helped :)
It looks to me the rockhopper sport is slightly better than the marlin 6 for $50 less. Am I missing something?
From what I can tell, Marlin has the fork lockout and 29mm stanchions as opposed to the rockhopper sport which has no lockout and 28mm.
I have the marlin 6 and I picked it over the specialized because it looks better imo.
I picked up the Rock Hopper Comp I plan to upgrade the fork soon.
I'm gonna buy Rockhopper Expert, first gotta work hard for it
Thank you so much for the video.
They also offered me to change the tyres to a one similar to a hybrid bike.`
Thank you so much for your help!!!
New sub!!! Great work!!!!!!!
Pls do more basics breakdowns for us.
Thank you!! I will :)
This is the best explained video that ive seen
Thank you!
Thanks for thorough and really helpful info.
Ofcourse!
Great video, I could have used this about a month ago. Lol
Ended up buying a Rockhopper elite 27.5, really enjoy the bike and can keep up with friends riding 29ers.
I bought both base 27.5 and 29er Rockhopper size M to test the size out. I had previously also owned a Diamondback 29er size small and that fit me well. As much as I wanted to like Rockhopper 29 size M, it just felt not as easy to turn and to accelerate like the 27.5. So I sold the 29er and now enjoying 27.5. I am 5’6”.
is specialized rockhopper comp have small bike too? would they work for a beginners too or not really. just wondering. have a good evening.
Is it worth getting the elite over the comp?
Excellent video, good breakdown!
Thanks!!
I love specialized rock hopper im lookin to buy one also great vid
Bought the Expert today and I HIGHLY recommend it lol
So, I have specialized rockhoper 27,5 and I was going with my club on some trails and I didnt know the condition of them so I hit that rock garden with speed kf 20/30km/h and I even hit really big rock because I started panicking and still it held up pretty good on almost 1 km of rock garden, all I'm gonna say, It's soo good beginner bike, just change the breaks and ur all good, now I'm probably gonna buy the Rockhopper Expert and can't wait to buy it!
Experience with the bike? 10/10
Awesome!!
now is 2020 but it's still a great video. I am looking for my first mountain bike and this video super helpful.
Thank you!!
Awesome video...looking forward with the Trek bikes as well👍👍👍
Excellent video. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Great video. Trek 5 or Specialized Rockhopper Sport ? Which one would you choose and why?
giant updated their budget full sus and hardtail can you make a video about that
I got a Talon 3 in a matte dark green :)
Great video! Looking to buy a Marlin 5 or Rockhopper Sport once they get back in stock. Would love to see a Marlin vs. Rockhopper video though!
Thanks for the great informative video. It looks like I’ll have to get the standard for $700 because the prices are so freaking high!
Thank you so the video .. I am planning to buy Comp
You're welcome :)
Well, in Croatia i bought Comp model with 2x9 Acera setup...
Thanks
Great comparison, very detailed
Thank you!
How many tooth for the rockhopper chainring?and also color available. Nice vid. Thanks
Great video! I'm looking into buying an entry level MTB. Can you also feature the GT Avalanche series?
Sure I’ll look into those!
I just got the roscoe 7 2021, I would love to see a video comparing the roscoe and other bikes in the same category, both price and type (rivals) please
I would love to do that eventually! I'm gonna start by going over some other brands's lineups first though.
@@TalalipopMTB thanks, I appreciate it, I'm loving my new bike btw, it's sick!! I'm also starting a youtube channel with my friend soon about mountain bikes, we're based in the UK, wondering if you wanted the link, when we start uploading stuff??
@@TalalipopMTB Have you thought about CUBE lineups maybe ?
Just loved the black and white color scheme.
bouta pre order the rockhopper comp 29, really helpful
Nice!! And thanks :D
